Lady's fate in foreshore build - February 7, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Lady's fate in foreshore build

The Nautical Lady tower's demolition will take place in the next round of construction on the Busselton foreshore.

City of Busselton chief executive Mike Archer said the tower had been "earmarked" for demolition for the past 18 months.

He said while the Busselton City Council had considered a recent petition, the tower had no "heritage or commercial value" and had high maintenance requirements and the area was "better served" as public open space.

Mr Archer said works will start on the construction of the new protective seawall after this weekend's Busselton Jetty Swim and Busselton Jetty 150th anniversary event.

"While the City has access to heavy construction equipment and sections of the foreshore are sectioned off, it makes good sense in terms of costs and minimising public disruption to demolish the tower and some other buildings while this work is underway," he said.

In the meantime, Mr Archer said the City and the Geographe Bay Tourism Association would "actively explore" accommodation options to provide a visitor centre with "alternative, short-term accommodation" within the foreshore area.

The work will form part of the City's $9 million upgrade of the eastern foreshore which will feature a children's playground and waterpark, feature landscaping with promenades; new picnic facilities and, with the removal of the tower, significantly increased public open space, Mr Archer said.

"It will enable the future development of a commercial brewery/restaurant outlet that will add vibrancy to the foreshore area and provide lease revenue for the ongoing maintenance of the foreshore and the Busselton Jetty lessening the burden on ratepayers," he said.

GBTA chief executive Sharna Kearney said the association was happy the City had decided to keep a visitor centre presence on the foreshore.

Demolition work requires I-49 lane closures, delays - February 7, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Demolition work on a bridge over Interstate 49 in Benton County will require lane closures and traffic delays next week, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department announced Friday.

Crews will replace the Arkansas 264 bridge over I-49 in Lowell and construct a concrete barrier wall along the interstates southbound median shoulder beneath the overpass, the department said in a statement.

In addition to a southbound inside lane closure, northbound and southbound I-49 traffic will be stopped for 15-minute intervals during overhead demotion work to prevent objects from falling into traffic.

The delays are scheduled for Tuesday night through Wednesday morning between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., officials said.

A two-week overnight detour will begin Wednesday night, the department said. I-49 northbound and southbound traffic will be detoured to the exit 78 ramps, beginning at 10 p.m. and ending at 6 a.m. each day for two weeks.

Demolition plan changed prior to deadly overpass collapse – Quincy Herald-Whig | Illinois & Missouri News, Sports - February 7, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By LISA CORNWELL Associated Press

CINCINNATI (AP) - A demolition plan for a Cincinnati highway overpass was changed hours before the structure collapsed last month, killing a worker, according to the contractor for the highway construction project.

The plan for demolishing the overpass above Interstate 75 changed after steel beams supporting the structure's concrete deck began rising during demolition the night of Jan. 18, according to Kokosing Construction Company Inc., of Columbus, Ohio.

Kokosing official John Householder said Friday that the crew implemented the changes the next afternoon, installing anchors to tie down the beams. The collapse occurred about 10:30 that night, killing Brandon Carl, of Augusta, Kentucky, and injuring a Michigan truck driver traveling on I-75.

The company said it is not uncommon for beams to lift during this type of demolition, but the crew didn't want to proceed until checking with an engineer.

"On Jan. 19, the demolition plan was reviewed by the professional engineer and an adjustment was made to address the beam uplift issue that had occurred the previous night," a company news release said.

The release accompanied demolition plan documents first obtained Thursday by The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Householder said the company is cooperating with investigators from the Ohio Department of Transportation and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration to determine the cause of the collapse.

"We don't want to speculate at this point," he said.

A Department of Transportation spokesman confirmed Friday that the agencies are still investigating.
