Lagos demolishes Balogun market razed buildings - February 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Lagos State Government on Friday began the demolition of the three buildings gutted by fire on January 12 at the popular Balogun Market in Central Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the demolition was being carried out by a firm, Blackrock Construction Company.

Fire gutted the buildings housing about 100 shops and destroyed goods worth millions of naira.

Officials of the company who spoke to NAN on condition of anonymity said it was the government that gave directive for the buildings to be demolished.

The head of the demolition team who did not state how many days the demolition would take, said the work would take some time to finish.

Mrs. Uju Agunna, a trader who sold clothes in one of the gutted shops, told NAN that she would rent the same place anytime the shops were rebuilt.

I will like to go back to my shop. I have been in this Balogun for over 15 years so it is difficult for me to go and rent somewhere else.

We hope that when the demolition exercise is completed the owners can start building. But now I am sharing a shop with my friend as you can see, Agunna said.

She, however, said she had to begin retail trading to find her feet again because she lost up to five million Naira worth of goods to the fire.

Another victim, Mr. Aliu Gbadamosi, said since his two shops got burnt, he was yet to rent a place to display his wares.

    Amazon.com: Customer Reviews: Bosch RS35 15 Amp Demolition … - February 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

4.0 out of 5 stars Bought Bosch insted of Milwaukee, Hilti, or Makita, September 18, 2009

This review is from: Bosch RS35 15 Amp Demolition Reciprocating Saw (Tools & Home Improvement)

I compared 15 amp reciprocating saws by Bosch, Milwaukee, Hilti, and Makita. The Milwaukee had a thin flimsy plastic lever adjusting the in-out movement of the shoe. I thought this was such weak design that I just was not going to buy the Milwaukee, no matter what else was right or wrong with the tool. The Hilti was 13 amp, but a very well made tool with one big problem. The Hilti has no speed limiting dial, all speed control is done with the 4 finger trigger. I did not buy Hilti, since I thought a speed control dial a "must have" feature. The Makita got passed up by reputation, there are too many stories out there about quality control issues with the blade change and shoe breaking under hard use. The Bosch RS35 is big and heavy, feels like more than the published weight. But under use the weight seems to steady things, and the anti-vibration system works well. There is so much power that I do not use high speed when cutting very often. The tool can get rather hot under hard use. A detail Bosch did not get right is the "robust demolition foot" with "cam lock" lever system, it is no more "robust" than the shoe on any other saw, and the "cam lock" is slow and secures tight only when the shoe is all the way in. Another detail wrong is a too thin plastic boot on the cord as it exits the saw handle. Details Bosch got right are decent rubber on the nose of the tool, good view of the blade as it cuts, orbital and speed controls in good positions, and good speed control with a two finger trigger.

5.0 out of 5 stars Huge, Heavy, Powerful. Serious cutting features, February 10, 2010

This review is from: Bosch RS35 15 Amp Demolition Reciprocating Saw (Tools & Home Improvement)

Generally speaking, there's not much to a reciprocating saw, a device that has been in production for more than 50 years. Even cheap ones will work well, because it's hard to get a design from the 1950's wrong, and it's really the blade that does most of the work.

Anyways, I chose the Bosch RS35 over the Dewalt and Hitachi equivalents for various reasons.

Demolition delayed on new Gulfport High School project - February 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

The first building at Gulfport High was supposed to have come down by now, but the demolition to make way for a new high school has been postponed.

After voters approved the $41 million bond issue last year to build a new Gulfport High School, the superintendent told WLOX the project should start in early 2015.

Here we are in February, and still no demolition. The reason behind the delay is student safety.

Gulfport Superintendent Glen East thought he would start hearing the pounding of the wrecking ball last month. Now, it looks like the first building on the Gulfport High School campus won't be coming down until this summer.

"I would love to have had construction start in January, but wiser heads than mine, as we sat down with the construction team and talking about student safety, the team decided with this first demolition to get the kids off campus, set up the fences and make things as safe as possible this first time around," said East.

As soon as classes let out on June 1, heavy equipment will roll in. The first to go will be the math and science building, the backside of the old gym and nine classrooms in the vocational complex.

The project will be done in phases, so as more buildings are demolished, crews will have a better idea of how the students will move around the construction zones.

"The construction team, the people that are going to actually be here during the building, that gives them a chance to see how our children react to the fences, the gates and so forth," said East.

East said while the demolition work has been delayed, it should not affect the construction timeline.

Plaza Building demolition set to begin next week - February 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Demolition of the Plaza Building at 100 N. Bridge St. in downtown Chippewa Falls is scheduled to begin the week of Feb. 23.

Daryl Wojcik of No Mercy Excavating, the company contracted with the project, said that most of the building will remain standing until next month. Workers will start tearing down the western-most section of the building that is closest to Spring Street Sports.

Before that can happen though, the westbound lane on Spring Street will be closed for a few hours while the stuccoed portion of the building that hangs over the sidewalk is removed. After that, Spring Street will be open again.

Wojcik didnt give an exact date for this portion of the project.

The real demolition doesnt begin until March 9. Then, portions of Bridge and Spring streets could be closed for several days.

Obviously there is going to be some inconvenience but were trying to keep that to a minimum, said City Planner Jayson Smith.

Im thinking three days to do it, Wojcik said. Hopefully quicker.

Bridge Street will be closed from Spring to Central streets and Spring Street will be closed from Bridge Street to the parking lot just east of the Village Tavern on the north side of the road.

Traffic will be able to turn right onto Spring Street from Bridge Street during the demolition.

Southbound traffic on Bridge Street will be directed west on Central Street and then south on Bay Street. Northbound traffic will be directed to Rushman Drive.
