ALL HANDS ON DECK: Coastal Georgia women smother St. Thomas – Brunswick News - January 13, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

With their shots still enjoying the Christmas break, the Coastal Georgia women ramped up the defense Thursday to score a suffocating 75-50 win over Sun Conference rival St. Thomas at Howard Coffin Gym.

Coming off a 37 percent shooting night Monday in an exhibition against Division II Savannah State, Coastal Georgia (8-5, 4-2) struggled again from the field, especially in the first quarter where it was just 5-of-15 (33.3 percent).

The Mariners were still shooting under 40 percent against the Bobcats through three quarters, yet they led by 22 entering the fourth because of a grinding defensive performance.

Coastal Georgia head coach Roger Hodge credited the exhibition for allowing his team an opportunity to shake off the rust following a 30-day layoff between games.

I thought we were still rough a little bit offensively, and I think its a product of how long weve been off, Hodge said. Our defensive energy and intensity was just really good. It was by no means a perfect game, especially on the offensive end, I thought we turned it over a little too much, and defensively we put them on the line a little too much, but overall I was happy with the energy against a good basketball team.

St. Thomas (6-10, 3-3) shot just 26.2 percent from the field against Coastal, including a paltry 2-of-15 in the second quarter as its deficit grew.

The Mariners rode a 12-2 surge to their first lead and a five-point advantage with just over a minute to play in the first, before using another 12-2 run to take a stronghold on the contest with under two minutes remaining in the second quarter. Solrun Gisladottir drew a double team before wrapping a pass around it to Tanisha Clark for an easy layup on one possession and Quira Porter cashed in on a basket off an offensive rebound the next to push the lead to 13.

Throughout the game, Coastal went as its defense did. The Mariners forced 22 Bobcat turnovers, 10 of them coming in the third quarter, and it turned the, into 30 points.

Coastal Georgia also dominated St. Thomas on the glass, winning the rebound battle 41-29 while turning 14 offensive boards into 20 second-chance points.

The Bobcats attempted to run the Mariners off the 3-point line when possible, and the strategy resulted in a 2-of-11 shooting night from long distance Gisladottirs lone 3-pointer beating the buzzer to give her team a 55-33 lead at the end of the third quarter down from the 4.5 makes theyve averaged this season. Instead, Coastal did its work in the lane, finishing with 34 points in the paint.

They really did a good job of not leaving shooters, Hodge said. They were going to make us beat them on the drive and in the post, and I thought we did a good job of taking what they gave us.

There were times where I thought it was a little bit choppy because of that, because we were a little unsure and unconfident in doing that part of the game, but at the same time, we got to the line, did a pretty good job at that and a decent job hitting them.

Kaliyah Little was instrumental in the Mariners ability to take advantage of the Bobcats defensive strategy, consistently beating her defender off the dribble, and scoring in the lane and at the free throw line.

The true freshman from Warner Robins eclipsed her previous career high of 12 points with 23 on 9-of-11 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.

Shes so fast, Hodge said. If youre not going to help off shooters, shes difficult to defend, especially on a night like tonight where shes really shooting it well. She was huge. Im very excited about how she played.

The win lifts Coastal Georgia into a tie with Johnson & Wales for third place in The Sun Conference while St. Thomas sixth straight loss drops it into a tie for fifth with Florida Memorial.

Coastal will host Florida Memorial for a game at 2 p.m. Saturday.

This Is Exactly What Captain Lee Thinks When He Watches Captain Sandy on Below Deck Med – Bravo - January 13, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

After Show: Kate Chastains Three Favorite Stews

When Captain Lee Rosbach isn't leading the Below Deck crew to another successful charter season, he's usually tweeting about the show, as well as its Mediterranean counterpart. One might think that the Below Deck boss just wouldn't be able to help himself from being a bit of a backseat driver while watching how Captain Sandy Yawn handles her crew on Below Deck Mediterranean.

However, there's a very good reason why Captain Lee approaches watching Below Deck Med from a very different angle. "I am not the devil's advocate at that point. I have complete empathy for what she's going through because I know what she's going through," Captain Lee explained during Below Deck's 100th episode celebration on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on January 6 (clip above). "And some of the situations that Captain Sandy gets put in, I see where they're just totally unfair and totally just biased."

Captain Lee went on to acknowledge that Captain Sandy has had to face a whole different set of challenges during her career in yachting. "Because she's had to endure a lot of things because she's a female captain in a male-dominated industry," he explained. "And so, it's like, I don't know what she's gone through, but I try to put myself in that situation."

Captain Sandy similarly had a lot of empathy for Captain Lee following Ashton Pienaar's overboard accident in Season 6 of Below Deck. "My reaction was I knew exactly how Captain Lee felt. He probably wanted to drop to his knees, just the thought of killing someone. It wasn't his fault," Captain Sandy shared on WWHL in June 2019. "I think training, training, training, and when you have a new crew that you don't really get to train, it makes it harder. Our jobs are very difficult."

As you can see, there's no rivalry here. "We're great," Captain Lee said on WWHL of his relationship with Captain Sandy. "We just have a great time together."

Betting Against The House: How Large Companies Stack The Decks In Their Favor In Talent Acquisition – Forbes - January 4, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

In the movie Rounders, Matt Damon plays the role of poker prodigy Mike McDermott. At one point, he says, "If you can't spot the sucker in the first half-hour at the table, then you are the sucker."

I've long been fascinated by people who take on poker players they know are much better than themselves. I've been even more fascinated by why people bet against the house in a casino. Similarly, I'm fascinated by companies that think they can beat giant brands at their own game when it comes to recruiting. I believe if you want to compete effectively for talent, you have to, at a minimum, understand how large firms are stacking the odds of recruiting in their favor.

Recruiting resembles poker in several respects. I recently had a hard-earned lesson in this when I participated in a small Texas Holdem tournament with about 40 players, one of whom was Matt Damon. A friend asked me if I thought Matt would be any good. I said he was probably there just for fun, even if he was excellent in the role of Mike McDermott. A few hours later, Matt not Mike took home first prize, and I had to eat my words while my friend laughed at me.

Much as in poker, hiring predictions are impacted by both chance and skill. The shifting ratios of chance and skill make recruitment decisions quite challenging, especially because we often cant know whether a hiring manager was just lucky when they landed a star performer or if their methods made all the difference.

In both poker and recruiting, a surprising number of people believe they can just wing it. When they lose, they convince themselves they were just unlucky. These individuals fail to recognize that top players rely much more on a good strategy and a disciplined game than pure luck.

Similarly, most executives I've spoken to dismiss the notion that investing in talent analytics can help them significantly improve their results. According to Gartner, only 21% of human resources leaders think their companies effectively use talent data to inform business decisions. This is despite strong business examples of even small investments in HR analytics paying off. Even sports teams see improvement: An analysis by FiveThirtyEight found that baseball teams with at least one analyst supporting their recruiting efforts outperformed their expected winning percentage by more than 40 percentage points in 2009.

My question to business leaders not investing in people analytics is this: In what other parts of your organization would you pass up on hiring one analyst if it could improve the performance of your company? The most common response I receive is, "The main companies that care about talent analytics are tech firms."

Let's take a look at this argument.

From my perspective, business leaders using this argument tend to believe that the talent who wants to work in tech would not want to work for them anyway, and it's only tech firms that are investing in people analytics. As a result, they draw the conclusion that they don't need to worry about other companies gaining a competitive edge over them.

Let me start by saying that I disagree with the notion that tech only recruits from a specific pool of people who would only want to work in tech. Yes, some people are only interested in working in tech. However, tech firms understand that they need superstars to achieve their goals. But LinkedIn, for example, is training food truck workers and teachers to fill in tech talent gaps. To me, it's difficult to argue these people would not be interested in a nontech job.

The second part of the assumption that only tech firms are investing in people data analytics is also incorrect. My own analysis (presented in my upcoming book) from March 2019, looked at 490 companies implementing data analytics; 12 out of 17 companies employing 10 or more talent analytics professionals were not tech firms. I'm not alone to point out that nontech firms are adapting people analytics. For example, JetBlue is using talent analytics to understand attrition patterns.

How can you leverage data analytics?

It's important to remember that using data analytics will require some initial investments in collecting better data and in team members who can truly make use of this data. To overcome these challenges, consider investing in a person to manage the data collection and ensure that the data is clean and reliable. Depending on the size of your organization, a part-time resource might suffice. For example, at my company, we have about 130 employees, and one person dedicates 20% to 30% of their time to this. Also, you can consider hiring a data-scientist, either internally or externally, who can help you look at the right data and to draw actionable conclusions from the data.

My company used analytics internally and looked at data for junior-level hires. We found out that relevant experience with the task they were being hired to do correlated negatively with job performance at this level. This was a highly surprising result, and it showed that hiring managers were overly valuing past experience when trying to hire junior-level candidates. We have since trained our hiring managers to value past experience less for junior roles.

    The Bottom Line

If you have a hard time finding the talent you need, I believe you are already competing with companies that have talent analytics departments. And these firms are stacking the odds of hiring better talent in their favor. To paraphrase Matt Damon, if you do not have a repeatable and scalable way of attracting the best talent away from other firms and to your company, then those companies are stealing the best talent away from you.

Think about it this way: Would you want to be the last baseball team to hire a talent analytics person? If not, I suggest you should stop reading this article and start drafting the job description for your first talent analytics hire.

‘Below Deck’ Guest Explains What Really Happened With the Room Arrangements – Showbiz Cheat Sheet - January 4, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Below Deck fans and crew shaded a recent charter guest on the show when she refused to share a room with one of the other women in her group.

Cameras followed the group from Charleston, South Carolina as they chose rooms during the first few moments on Valor. But when it came time to put guests Jamie Stone and Lauren Taylor in a room, Stone learned the only room available had one bed. She is seen telling chief stew Kate Chastain she was told shed have her own room and refused to share with Taylor. We all want our own room Jamie, but this is how many rooms we actually have, Chastain says in a confessional.

Chastain then told Stone shed be in the room and that shed make the sky lounge comfortable for Taylor. Taylor looks uncomfortable as she realizes shes going to be sleeping on a couch. Later, Taylor shares with Captain Lee Rosbach that shes been couch surfing. Rosbach moves Taylor into his quarters and rides the couch instead. Rosbach had some choice words about Stone during the episode and in his blog.

Stone took a tremendous amount of heat for her actions on the show. Viewers skewered her for not only refusing to share the room (which also meant sharing a bed) with Taylor, but they also snarked at her comments about the crew forgetting her birthday.

But Stone shared on Twitter that she had only met Taylor (and most of the group) on the vacation and it was an incredibly awkward situation. I think its great that some people can instantly feel comfortable with others in what is meant to be a safe place, such as the place you sleep at night, she posted on Twitter. But I have boundaries, and whereas Im sure Lauren is a great person I met her literally right before we got on the boat and it takes me time to get to know someone and feel comfortable.

To attack my personal sense of safety and comfort feels unfair to me, especially after seeing maybe 10 minutes of me on a reality tv show. I had a good time on the show and Bravo and the producers voluntarily offered me my own room weeks ahead of the charter.

Stone added that she told Taylor she didnt want her to be forced to sleep in the sky lounge either. Most times you dont see the uncut footage I told Lauren after the room tour that I didnt want her to be forced to sleep in his private lounge and she said, let me try it and Ill let you know if its awful. She seemed fine with it, and if she wasnt that was never expressed to me.

She completed her post by sharing shes been cyberbullied and attacked. One person suggested she should have reconsidered her approach at the time. If you wanted your own space you should have taken the sky lounge, I dont know you or why it was important to you, it just looked bad, IMHO.

Stone agreed. In retrospect you are probably right (others have said this but you didnt call names so thank you!) if Im being very honest the camera added a level of discomfort that I wasnt prepared for and thats my own fault. I dont think Im built for realty tv, she replied.

Rhylee Gerber Says Captain Lee Rosbach Is Part of the "Boys’ Club" on Below Deck – Bravo - January 4, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Below Deck's Rhylee Gerber is over the so-called "boys' club" on deck. As the only female deckhand this season, she says she hasfelt left out and ostracized by her fellow deck team members. Captain Lee Rosbach agrees and has also called out the men in the crew for the way they've been acting all season on Twitter.

Rhylee spoke more about this "boys' club" in an interview with The Daily Dish podcast.

"I agree wholeheartedly that coming into this position, it is very reminiscent of last year,in the fact that it feels like a boys club," she said."I dont have any problem working with males or females. And I dont have a problem with authority. What I have a problem with is people that... to me its not about rank. OK, I understand there is rank. But just because youre above me doesnt mean you can speak down to me. It doesnt mean you can treat me disrespectfully... And so with this boys club feeling, I mean, last year I was left out of deck meetings, I was made to take my breaks separately [from]the boys so they all bonded. They, you know, they had their own thing going on.And I was mocked and laughed at behind my back. Thats not something that you dont pick up on. Im not creating these feelings out of nowhere. Its a boys club because thats how they have made it."

Rhylee's not done calling out these crew members, however;in fact, she wants to add another name to that list.

"With Captain Lee addressing that, I just hope he realizeshes a part of that boys club," she said.

Woah! The deckhand explained, "Hes very much a fan of people over others... that vibe is shared very plainly on board, with favoritism and all that. He makes the comment a lot that Im just a third deckhand. Well, Im also your third deckhand. And just because Im a third deckhand here, dont forget my credentials. I have credentials. And I had more credentials than any of these guys last year. You know, its just a difference of what vessel Im working on."

As for who she thinks Captain Lee favors, Rhylee claimed, "It goes without saying, you know,Kate [Chastain] is definitely a favorite of Captain Lee.I dont say that in a derogatory sense. I know they have a working relationship for several years. That just comes with working together so long. I understand why Lee feels that way about certain people. But just dont make others feel less than or inferior. Thats just something that to me is, is disrespectful. Its inconsiderate."

To be fair, Captain Lee has never said that he doesn't show favoritismto Kate."Kate deserves preferential treatment because she's earned it. It's simple,"Captain Lee said in theBelow Deck Season 7 After Show. "You don't get preferential treatment from me unless you earn it."

Hear more from Rhylee in the podcast above, and make sure to tune in to Below Deck on Mondays at 9/8c. Preview, below.

Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve to Add New Bar, Grill and Dining Deck in 2021 – NBC 7 San Diego - January 4, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

A brand-new grill and a dining deck with lakefront views are being built in San Diegos East County as part of a plan to keep a Santee landmark fresh over the next 20 years.

Over at Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve specifically, Lake 4 near the General Store where many families like to feed the ducks youll find a lot of construction these days and, as a result, the volunteer-staffed Waterfront Grill is closed.

Banners line the construction area showing whats coming: a new bar and grill and dining deck, all set to be completed by the spring of 2021.

Laura Koval, directorof park and recreation for Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve, told NBC 7 theconstruction project broke ground about seven months ago.

When its finished, the dining deck will featureseating for 150 people.

Koval said the plan is for the new bar and grill to beopen seven days a week, offering a great coffee menu selection, unique grillitems, and a few local microbrews.

She said a food vendor for the grill has not yet been chosen, but Santee Lakes is accepting information from vendors that may be interested in eventually running the dining facility. Those bids from vendors are due by Jan. 31.

According to Koval, the overall project will cost $8.8 million. Santee Lakes is owned and operated by Padre Dam Municipal Water District and Koval said the self-sufficient preserve receives no rate payer or tax payer subsidies. All park operations, including this project, are funded by fees collected from visitors of the park and its campground, she told NBC 7.

Koval has been spearheading the planning of this project since 2015 when she formed a team to help carry out the parks Dynamic Vision Plan, or DVP.

The DVP is a vision for the park over the next 20 years, Koval explained. The plan is dynamic so that it may adjust to the needs of customers, the community and park staff over time.

Koval said this is the second project at Santee Lakesto stem from the DVP. The first was a $1.7 million park improvement project onthe west side of Lake 2 and Lake 3, completed in August 2017.

According toKoval, this project will be completed in three phases to keep thepark offices and general store operational throughout construction.

As of Jan. 1, Koval said phase one of the project which involves the complete demolition and replacement of the parksadministration building was 65% completed. The building is expected to becompleted by this April.

Phase 2 the construction of the dining deck overLake 4 is currently 5% completed. She said the main concrete and steelstructure for this phase will be built over the course of this month and nextmonth. In addition to seating for 150, that deck will be able to be configuredto accommodate up to 300 guests for special events.

Meanwhile, phase 3 will involve remodeling the parksGeneral Store and adding the 600-square-foot kitchen. During that phase, theGeneral Store will be temporarily relocated to the adjacent Events Centerbuilding, Koval said. That building will also get a new roof, doors and windowsduring the home stretch of the project.

Koval said this project is critical to the future ofSantee Lakes, which attracts more than 750,000 visitors each year.

As part of the identity of the City of Santee and oneof the most popular tourist attractions in East County, this project willensure Santee Lakes remains a premier destination, she added.

Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve is located at 9310 FanitaParkway in Santee and hosts many of Santees big events throughout the year.

The 190-acre park features seven lakes filled with recycled water and stocked with sport fish year-round.

Santee Lakes also boasts several playgrounds, a splash pad thats open on those hot East County summer days, and a campground that includes campsites and cabin rentals.

Bengaluru Decks Up for 107th Indian Science Congress – The Weather Channel - January 4, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

The iconic Vidhana Soudha, Karnataka's secretariat building

Bengaluru, India's tech city, has decked up to host the 107th Indian Science Congress (ISC 2020) for 5 days starting Friday, January 3, 2020.

"About 15,000 delegates, including 2 Nobel Laureates and eminent scientists from across India and abroad are set to attend the Science Congress from January 3-7 in the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), which is hosting the annual event," ISC President K.S. Rangappa told IANS ahead of the meet.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the mega summit at a huge makeshift hall in the sprawling Gandhi Krishi Vigyan Kendra (GKVK) campus on the city's northern outskirts.

About 10,000 delegates, including students, academicians, researchers, keynote speakers, experts and policy makers have registered to participate in the congress from across the country and 35 countries worldwide.

"This is the third time Bengaluru is hosting the science congress after 2002 and 1987. Modi inaugurated the 103rd session at Mysuru in the southern state on January 3, 2016," Rangappa, former vice-chancellor of Mysore University, recalled.

As the event is being held by an agriculture university, the focal theme of the congress is "Science and Technology: Rural Development", ostensibly to bridge the gap between urban and rural India and improving the quality of farmers' life through science and technology.

The national jamboree will cover 14 sectors in contemporary science, with concurrent sub-events like Women's Science Congress, Children's Science Congress, Science Communicators; Meet and Farmer's Science Congress.

File photo: Students going through the demonstration of drones for agriculture during the inauguration of Krishi Mela at the GKVK Campus in Bengaluru

"For the first time, the Farmer's Science Congress on January 6 will provide a forum to ryots across the country to interact, share their experiences, success, failures and showcase their innovative techniques/methods developed and followed by them in farming," Rangappa said.

With agrarian crisis gripping the country and the farm sector's contribution to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) stagnating, the day-long farmers' session will focus on innovation in integrated agriculture and entrepreneurship for doubling farmers' income.

Climate change, bio-diversity, conservation, ecosystem services and farmers empowerment will be discussed in parallel sessions along with one on agrarian distress, bio-entrepreneurship and policy issues.

Four public lectures and 26 plenary sessions will be held concurrently. In addition, a science exhibition (Pride of India) will showcase the latest developments in science and technology the world over, leading products and services, path-breaking research and developments (R&D) initiatives, schemes and achievements of the public and private sectors.

The public lectures (two each) will be held on January 3-4 at the international convention centre in the campus. The first lecture on "Ultrasharp Fluorescence Microscopy" will be delivered by Nobel Laureate Stefan Walter Hell from Gottingen in Germany, followed by a talk on "Science Across Disciplines and Some Consequences for Industry 4.0" by Subra Suresh, an India-born American scientist. He was awarded Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2014.

The third lecture on January 4 will be on "From basic science to an acute problem of modern medicine" by Nobel Laureate Ada E. Yonath, an Israeli scientist from Jerusalem. She was awarded Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with Indian-born American physicist and molecular biologist Venkatraman Ramakrishnan and American biophysicist and biochemist Thomas Steitz in 2009.

The fourth lecture will be given on "Life style diseases and Recent advances in Cardiac Sciences" by eminent Indian cardiologist C.N. Manjunath, Director of the state-run Jayadeva Hospital in Bengaluru.

"In addition, 74 expert speakers from 24 countries will deliver keynote addresses on different subjects on application of science in technology," added Rangappa.

Did ‘Southern Charm’ (Sort Of) Finally Get Their ‘Below Deck’ Crossover? – Showbiz Cheat Sheet - January 4, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Did Southern Charm just meet Below Deck? During a recent episode, fans thought they recognized one of the charter guests from Southern Charm. Patricia Altschul from Southern Charm has said on more than one occasion that shed love to do a Below Deck crossover. She wanted to take the main cast members on a luxury yacht voyage and has gotten close with Captain Lee Rosbach and chief stew Kate Chastain.

But it wasnt Altschul and company on board Valor. Instead, a few Charleston residents who have appeared on the Southern Charm took a trip on Below Deck. Viewers recognized Madison Simon from the store, Gwynns. Kathryn Dennis worked at the store and Simon has made additional cameo appearances on Southern Charm. In addition to Simon, viewers recognized another charter guest not only from Southern Charm but another Bravo show.

In addition to Simon, viewers may recognize Molly OConnell, not only from Southern Charm but also from Americas Top Model. OConnell appeared in the Southern Charm season 6 season finale and shared a photo with the cast on Instagram. Check out the #season6 #finale of #southerncharm @bravosoutherncharmtonight at 9/8 central on@bravotv! Ill most likely be drunk in the background pretending to play the harp, she wrote.

OConnell also shared a photo along with her harp. Sick harp soloFantastic#stagpartythrown by@pataltschul! she wrote.

When the Below Deck episode aired, OConnell posted a fun video too. This week should be amusing to say the least, she commented. The crew likely takes this group of guests back to the elephant sanctuary too as OConnell shared a few pictures with elephants in Thailand. Its been real, Thailand, she wrote along with one post.

Chef Kevin Dobsons nemesis chef guest, Justine Vastano owns Silver Spoon and has a website that features a slew of mouthwatering images. The private chef is based in Charleston and her Instagram is filled with just as many amazing shots of a few of her dishes.

Their friend Lauren Taylor was the guest who ended up having to bunk in the sky lounge after the primarys cousin Jamie refused to room with her.
