After the 2016 presidential election, political airwaves seemed dominated by two refrains:

Donald Trump is our president!

Actually, Hillary won the popular vote.

Both statements are equally valid. Despite their gripes, liberals could not deny that Donald Trump would occupy the Oval Office. On the other hand, perhaps Republians should have qualified their enthusiasm by acknowledging that their candidate spoke for a minority of the American people.

These opposing outlooks are rooted in an underlying issue that is more complex than mere partisanship. The 2016 election is proof of a system that disproportionately rewards the rural vote. In vying for control of the House of Representatives, the Senate and the presidency, urban political voices are at a disadvantage because of the outsized influence that sparsely populated states hold in our electoral system. The result is that representation in the federal government fails to adequately reflect public opinion. In an age of polarization along geographical lines, Democrats are the ones who lose out. If they hope to win in 2020, Democrats need to take into account this deep-seated rural advantage and shift their strategy to win more rural votes.

The numbers demonstrate this disconnect between the electoral and popular votes. Over the past few elections for the House of Representatives, Republicans have won a share of seats that is four to five percentage points higher than the portion of the popular vote they garnered. In the 2018 midterms, even as many Republican seats were taken by Democrats, their losses were hedged by gerrymandering according to one analysis, Democrats current advantage in the House would have been 16 seats larger if congressional boundaries had been drawn fairly.

The Senate, where Republicans control 53 seats, is even less representative of the popular vote: The 53 GOP Senators in the hundred-member body represent about 15 million fewer people than the 45 Democrats who sit across the aisle. And in the Electoral College, the five most rural states in America have twice as many electoral votes per resident as the five largest states do.

Believe it or not, the disproportionate representation of small states was a deliberate part of the Framers original plan. The Senate, for instance, was intended to guarantee that small states have a meaningful influence in government and are protected from the tyranny of the majority. The Electoral College was designed as a concession to Southern states, protecting the political influence of their voting populations while leaving slaves disenfranchised. The design of the Electoral College system was not a real problem until the 2000 presidential election, when George Bush won the White House through the Electoral College despite earning fewer votes than Al Gore. This was the first time since 1888 that the popular vote and the Electoral College produced opposite verdicts. But now that the previous two Republican presidents won in this manner, it is time for Democrats to take notice.

Why now, at the start of the new millennium, does the Electoral College fail to represent the views of the majority of Americans? Over the past few decades, geography has increasingly come to predict party affiliation: The Democratic Party now largely represents cities, while the Republican Party largely represents rural America. Before this sociopolitical sorting intensified at the end of the 20th century, the Constitutions bias against voters in major population centers affected both parties about equally. Republicans depended on moderate Eastern elites, such as the Rockefeller Republicans, as much as they did on social conservatives to form winning coalitions. Democrats, on the other hand, could count on urban political machines such as Tammany Hall, even while they also relied on the Solid South for victories, until they lost Southern support with the passage of the Civil Rights Act.

But the era of parties that crossed geographic lines is now a distant memory. The 13 most densely populated states are represented by 121 Democrats and 73 Republicans in the House. The other 37 less densely populated states are represented by 163 Republicans and 72 Democrats. The Republicans are definitively the party of rural America, and so they benefit from the advantages in representation that are built into the Constitution. The Democrats, standard-bearers of cityfolk, must deal with the ramifications.

The upshot is that while the Democrats should be cognizant of the systemic disadvantages they face, they need to reshape their political strategy to better suit the needs of moderate and even conservative voters in places such as the Rust Belt to compete outside of states like New York and California. In practice, they will have a hard time doing so because of the growing progressive wing of the party, which could alienate rural voters who might otherwise consider voting blue.

The challenge facing the Democrats thus adds a new twist to an important question: What exactly do working-class Americans care about? Even if the structural reforms presented by candidates such as Bernie Sanders are popular in urban centers, can they win over enough moderates to overcome our governments bias against the political influence of the coasts? Just as important: Is Bidens time-tested message to the Rust Belt enough to rebuild the blue wall?

The two wings of the Democratic Party offer different answers, and it is not clear which will more effectively resonate with voters. But if there is one thing that our broken system of uneven representation should teach Democrats, it is that they need to tailor their message to the highly diverse geographies around the country, not just to the urban centers. Even outside of the cities, our country moves. It breathes. It votes.

Joo FrancofromBelow Deck Mediterraneanshared that he was ready to live a sober life. He revealed that he quit drinking alcohol after doing a considerable amount of reflecting, he shared on Instagram.

He started a series of three posts over the weekend. His first post focused on how he spent too much time dealing with a hangover. He could have instead been enjoying life with his family.

Ill tell you what A hangover, he remarked along with photos taken with his father. One thats lasted 3 days! Demons Alcohol. Ive decided I hate this feeling! I seriously hate it! I should be the happiest I have ever been and yet I feel insecure, questioning my purpose, or more so, what Im doing with my time that is important and how much of my time on this earth I am spending on unimportant things.

His next post dove deeper into why he needed to stop, citing that signs were everywhere.

Franco began his post revealing that there were times hed wake up covered in blood after a night of drinking. Or getting arrested should have been the wakeup call he needed. We are given signs that we choose to see or ignore. I have certainly been given my fair share of signs, he wrote. They come to me in different ways. Some are a blatant smack in my face, like getting in trouble with the law or waking up with torn clothes, blood and gashes all over my body, some blood stains not my own. Broken knuckles and no idea of how it happened.

Seeing Jezebob emerge on Below Deck Med should have also been a sign, he added. Or watching my actions on a TV show, knowing very well that I would have handled situations very differently if I was sober, he penned.

But also learning that Captain Sandy Yawn was sober should have been a sign too. Some signs more subtle, maybe through other people like@captainsandrayawngiving me light on when and why she made her decision to quit alcohol. The people close to me, telling me that I have so much potential to be great, I just need not f**k it up by going to jail or having a car accident.

Franco says his demons were far more serious. Not just killing me but all those involved too, he admitted. Or worse- I live and others die. I go through waves. I reflect and calm down for a few months and then something gets me on the road to inevitable doom again.

Like some people, he shared that he often was able to get off the hook I SOMEHOW miss a date with the devil and come back to my senses, all to start the process again. I have been told a countless amount of times that I have an endless supply of lives because SOMEBODY just keeps the lives coming! But why??

Franco said he cheated death too many times. I should have died this weekend with my actions, he revealed. I should have died a month ago on my way to Victoria falls when I drove with my best mates in the car. He added, I can count at least 10 times a year that I should have died.

Yawn saw Francos post and told him she was here for him. Joao, after reading this I realized that this has always been your struggle, she responded. I promise you, from experience, if you stay clean and do the next right thing, your life will be beyond your wildest dreams! I love you and Im here for you. Yawn mentored another crew member last season who would get blackout drunk when the crew went out on the town.

Last season she shared that she was a recovering addict. Yawn told Showbiz Cheat Sheet she too could have had a different life if she continued to drink. I was a mess, she said in August. By the grace of God, Im alive. No matter how much money you have, its not going to save your life if you are an addict or an alcoholic. And I was a major addict and alcoholic.

Like Franco, she never hurt or killed anyone. But I could have killed someone. My life would be very different right now. Deckhand and close friend Colin Macy-OToole cheered Franco on too. Proud of you buddy! You got this! , he wrote.

'Below Deck Med': Joo Franco Says Someone Could Have Been Killed as a Result of His Drinking - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

WOBURN As the fourth quarter got under way in Saturday nights MIAA Div. 1 North quarterfinal, the situation was not looking good for the top-seeded Woburn High girls basketball. Eighth-seeded Billerica was outplaying the Tanners and it scored the first basket to take a seven-point lead.

However, no one bothered to stop the game and ask the Woburn players to analyze the situation they were in. The Tanners just kept doing what they do: play fast, defend and give it all they had.

It was still a six-point game, midway through the fourth, when Woburns intense effort led to an incredible, 13-2 run that put the Tanners ahead to stay in a 58-56 triumph over the Indians at a packed Torrice Gym.

What was amazing about it was that Woburn did not rely on any one player to turn things around for them. Instead, it was about five or six players who stood up and made plays on either offense or defense to get the job done and keep the momentum going down the stretch.

The girls never panicked, said Woburn coach Steve Sullivan, whose team is now 21-1 and still has not lost in 2020. They have a lot of faith in each other, they have a lot of belief in each other, and they stayed together. I give them all the credit in the world.

The Tanners could have won it by a few more points but shot 2-for-10 from the free throw line in the last 1:09, stretching the drama out to the final buzzer.

Woburn will next host fourth-seed Cambridge (18-4) in the semifinals, Wednesday night (7 p.m.) back at Torrice Gym.

I cant give enough credit to the girls, they were down seven and they never put their heads down, they never quit, they just dug in, said Sullivan. They are an incredible group and I couldnt be prouder of them. We just need to work on free throws.

The first half featured a battle of the number 21s on both teams. Woburns Megan Roderick started the game by missing her first shot, then stealing it away from the girl who got the rebound, and then putting in her second shot. That started a first quarter that saw her score 11 points, and 16 for the half, including a pair of 3-point buckets.

Billericas Madison Watford was the best player on the floor. She was big and strong, but had a soft shooters touch that allowed her smoothly drain threes, while being automatic underneath the basket. On defense, when Watford wasnt swatting away shots and grabbing rebounds, her mere presence altered many of the Tanner shot attempts in the paint. She had 14 points in the first half.

Woburn led for much of the half, getting the lead up to as high as eight (22-14) in the second quarter before the Indians began settling in and running their offense. It was still a six-point game late in the half when Billerica went on a 7-0 burst, culminating with a Julia Trainor steal and layup that gave the Indians their first lead of the game, 28-27. Two Ashlyn Pacheco free throws gave the Tanners the lead at the half, 29-28.

They (Indians) are very good, said Sullivan, of Billerica They are well-coached, they run nice back cuts, nice screens, they move very well.

The third quarter began with a Meghan Qualey triple off the glass from the right side to get the lead up to four, but Billerica answered with a three from Madison Bonvie and two free throws from guard Taylor Gibson put the Indians back in front, 33-32.

Back and forth it went until Billerica went on another 7-0 run, this one giving the Indians an eight-point lead with 32 seconds left in the third. Watford had a conventional three-point play, Sofia Mazzotta made a shot, and Gibson added two free throws. Pacheco hit three free throws after getting fouled beyond the arc to make it a five-point game (45-40) after three.

We knew all along she could play, said Sullivan, of Watford, who had 19 points. She could shoot the ball, she hit some threes on us early, she was a physical player inside. I thought we did a much better job in the second half on her.

It was 51-45, midway through the fourth, when Woburn began to catch fire. Carley Pandora started it with a layup, Cyndea Labissiere hit two free throws, and Qualey hit a mid-range jumper to tie the game at 51-51.

Down the other end, Qualey took a charge to keep the momentum going forward. Sydney Sartell hit both ends of a one-and-one to briefly put the Indians back in front, 53-51, with 2:09 left, but Roderick (21) responded right back with a three that put the Tanners back in front to stay, 54-53.

Labissiere came up with a steal at mid-court and the foot race to the basket culminated in a 360-spinning reverse layup that was simply awesome.

Gibson, Billericas second-highest scorer, had four fouls on her when she tried to cover Labissiere the next time down the court. The freshman blew by the senior, forcing her to foul out to avoid the easy layup. Pacheco then took a charge on one defensive stand, and then on the next one, wrestled a loose ball away while lying on the ground, and then calling timeout before the tie-up, allowing the Tanners to keep the ball.

All those little plays matter, a lot, said Sullivan. We made just enough of those and they turned out to be big plays, and now we live to play another game.

The missed free throws were keeping the Indians slim hopes alive, and then when Sartell hit a 30-foot trey from straight away, it was a two-point game (58-56) with 10 seconds left. Watford ended the game with a dramatic shot from the Billerica side of mid-court, but the attempt came up just short.

I think the girls just dug down deep, said Sullivan. Things werent going well. We were slowing down and not getting much going offensively. We were just able to dig in, get a few stops and start playing fast. When we play fast we are really, really good.

There was a little controversy brewing, last night, regarding the Tanners being allowed to host a semifinal game it was playing in. We will see if anything develops there.

For those of you who dont enjoy brawls when the deck building is out of your control, The Burndown may be one to avoid. In the Burndown Rekindled, players will be using a randomly generated deck. After playing a game, the loser will be assigned the winners deck for their next Tavern Brawl match. If you win, youll keep the same deck and will be able to continue to use it until you lose.

Though you still only need to win one match to obtain your free pack for this week, the appeal of this brawl is its replayability. Players can take their randomly assigned deck and play consecutive games to test themselves against the great unknown. Since losers are assigned the winners deck, as the week progresses, the decks you run up against should become more powerful.

Unlike some random deck brawls, The Burndown doesnt even allow you to choose a class. This means youll be flying completely blind whenever you first dive in. If youre assigned a class that youre familiar with, you can have some sense of how to strategize. Even though your deck is random, if you have a ton of experience playing a particular class, youll probably be able to navigate the RNG better than you would otherwise.

Kate Chastain surprised fans when she announced that she would not be returning to Below Deck but theres a Bravo new project in the works, AllAboutTheTEA.com can confirm.

Kate has had several meetings in New York City with Andy Cohen in recent months. A Bravoinsider tells AllAboutTheTEA.com. There is a possible spinoff project in the works.

Bravo is not done with Kate, they have big plans for her and thats why she made the big move to the NYC.Bravo is planning a new panel show, with Kate and other Bravolebs. The source continues.

The chief stewconfirmed that she had moved to the New York City, during the recently aired season 7 reunion.

Kate Chastain, 37, confirmed she will not be returning to Below Deck in a post on Instagram following the airing of Part 2 of the Season 7 reunion on Monday, February 17. She wrote, After many months of reflection and internal discussions, I have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new land based role. I intend to step back as a senior member of the Below Deck Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support His Majesty Andy Cohen.

Kate Chastainjoined the Bravo reality series in Season 2 and served as chief stew in every season since, including most recently Season 7, becoming one of the longest-running crew members on Below Deck.

The colorful reality diva was known for bringing the drama on camera, but recently admitted that filming Season 7 was particularly challenging.

Personally, this has been a very challenging season for me. Im going to go spend a week alone in a resort and relax. Then, head back to Florida, pack up my life, and move to New York, she shared in an interview at the end of an episode earlier this season. Im scared to move to New York, but I was also scared to start yachting, and I think Im ready for a new adventure.

Taken in the spring of 1990 in the Persian Gulf, the impressive pictures in this post feature U.S. Air Force (USAF) B-52 Stratofortress strategic bombers buzzing USS Ranger (CV-61) aircraft carrier.

The story went as follows.

Two B-52s called the USS Ranger and asked if they could do a fly-by, and the carrier air controller said yes.

When the B-52s reported they were 9 kilometers out, the carrier controller said he didnt see them. The B-52s told the carrier folks to look down.

B-52 Pilot:Ranger, were 5 miles out.USS Ranger:We do not have visualB-52 Pilot:Look down

According to The Tailhook Association website, the B-52 paint scheme made it hard to see from above, but as it got closer, the sailors could make it out, and the water the B-52 jets were causing to spray out.

As we have already explained (click here to read the article) B-52s usually practiced low level flights during Cold War years to come in under Soviet radar. In this case, the B-52 pilots asked the carrier controller if they would like the bombers come around again. The carrier guys said yes, and a lot more sailors had their cameras out this time.

Although its very rare for a USAF aircraft to do a fly-by below the flight deck of a carrier, its not rare seeing B-52s doing low fly-bys over US Navy flattops.

In the winter of 1981 in fact, two Guam-based B-52 Stratofortress strategic bombers performed a low fly-by over USS Midway (CV-41) aircraft carrier. Here you can read the whole story of the USS Midway low fly-by written by B-52 commander Doug Aitken.

Update: Tim Manley, reader of The Aviation Geek Club, brought to our attention that the main photo used for this article was taken on the USS Independence (CV62) not the USS Ranger. A claim proved by the tail markings on the F-14 from VF-154 and the E-2C from VAW-115 parked on the flight deck. Both squadrons were deployed as part of CAG-5 which is can be identified as NK in the tail of the aircraft that were assigned to CV-62. They were never deployed on the Ranger. Stay tuned for additional updates if further details on this story had to come to light!

Barrier Fiora from Hewitt Benson suits players who appreciate flexible strategies. At 3 and 4 mana, Fiora and Shen are strong early threats. Use Puffcap Peddler to plant 3 Poison Puffcaps on random cards in the enemy deck. When summoned, Chump Whump creates two Mushroom Clouds which each plant five more Poison Puffcaps. Cycle these cards and continue to generate as many mushrooms as possible. Counterfeit Copies will enable you to pick a card in your hand and shuffle 4 exact copies of it into your deck so its unlikely youll run out of ammunition. Once youve planted 15 or more to level up your champion, Teemos Nexus Strike doubles the Poison Puffcaps in your opponents deck, which will eat away at their health.

Currently hailed as one of the strongest control decks in Legends of Runeterra, this Hewitt Benson combo is for patient players. You simply need to survive long enough to make it into the late game: then things start to turn in your favour.

Wyrding Stones ramps up your mana from early on and propels you towards a strong late game. Make use of The Ruination to kill all units and Avalanche to deal two damage to all units as you dish out sufficient board clears. You can rely on your plentiful spells to protect you from taking too much damage, which robs your opponent of any real board control. This is where Anivia shines too, dealing 1 damage to all enemies. These steady threats deter the opponent from spreading too wide, which lets you plant a chunky unit such as Avarosan Hearthguard to retain some board presence in the meantime. Summoning the Hearthguard also grants allies in your deck +1/+1, strengthening the cards youll play later on.

MUSKEGON, MI -- Visitors this summer to Muskegons Pere Marquette Park will be able to enjoy a drink while they stroll the beach sands.

Thats because The Deck, the lakefront BBQ joint and bar located at 1601 Beach Street, is expanding to include about 12,000 feet of beach property.

The fenced-in beach area will house volleyball and bocce ball courts, as well as cornhole and other games. It will also boast an outdoor bar and a stage, both housed in shipping containers.

People want a fun place on the beach to just hang out, and thats what were going to give them, said co-owner Fred Scharmer.

The Deck, which opened in summer 2014, is a popular spot at Pere Marquette for tourists and residents.

Its current seating capacity totals 325, and thats just not cutting it anymore, Scharmer said.

On any 80-degree Saturday, we have 150 people waiting, if not more, he said.

With the expansion, The Deck will have about 85 more restaurant seats and standing capacity in the beach area at around 900 people.

Rather than waiting around for a table to open up, patrons will be able to occupy their time with a drink, a stroll on the sand and a game or two, Scharmer said. The ability to have an area for people who only want drinks will also alleviate some restaurant seating congestion.

The beach area stage will host a variety of music acts each Thursday through Sunday. Scharmer said his team put a lot of thought and effort into pulling talent from the surrounding areas, including Chicago, Ohio and Detroit.

The acts will range in genre and include reggae, country, cover bands and more.

The City of Muskegon leases the property to The Deck. City officials were not able to immediately provide the current lease rate paid by The Deck. An amended lease with the included beach area expansion is being worked out, city officials said.

Scharmer said he hopes to have the expanded beach area ready for patrons by Memorial Day.

The expanded restaurant isnt the only change possibly coming to Pere Marquette Park. City leaders are considering charging motorists $5 to $7 to park at the beach.

Under the proposal, residents would be exempt from paying. It wasnt immediately clear if The Deck patrons would also have to pay for parking under the proposal.

The Deck is open Memorial Day through Labor Day. In 2017, it was ranked among the best beach bars in America by Thrillist, a digital publication focused on food, drink and travel.
