Wife decks woman she thinks slept with husband - June 23, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Commerce woman faces four criminal charges after she allegedly decked another woman she thought was involved in a relationship with her estranged husband.

Take me to jail because I done knocked out that (woman) for (having sex) with my man, advised Danielle Marie McDaniel, 33, of 155 Beaver Creek Drive, Commerce, according to the Commerce police report on the incident.

The victim, a white female, claimed to have no knowledge of what McDaniel was talking about, according to the report. She told the officer she was walking across the street near Prestos convenience Store, Old Maysville Road, when McDaniel appeared, struck her in the face and accused her of sleeping with McDaniels soon-to-be-ex-husband.

The officer said he asked the victim if she had a relationship with the man. The victim replied that she did not, that she didnt know anyone in the area and was just going on a walk with her daughter when McDaniel came out and attacked her.

The officer charged McDaniel with battery, cruelty to a child, disorderly conduct and criminal trespass.

Memorable moments: Budd decks Decker - June 21, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

The teenager had produced some astonishing performances in her native South Africa, but the country's apartheid regime meant it was excluded from the Olympics.

But, armed with the revelation Budd had a British grandfather, the Daily Mail led a campaign to bring her to these shores.

The barefoot Budd entered the 3000m where she came up against American darling Mary Decker. Just over halfway through the final, the pair clashed legs and Decker fell to the ground, injured.

Budd continued but, as the partisan L.A. crowd booed her, fell back to seventh - she later claimed she slowed deliberately to avoid causing an even greater controversy.

The race was won by Romania's Maricica Puica, who was actually the fastest athlete in the field on form.

In the wake of Decker's fall, a fevered blame game commenced. Though the US media rounded on Budd, accusing her of swerving in front of their runner, Decker later absolved her erstwhile rival of responsibility.

Budd soon returned to South Africa, for whom she competed with limited success after the end of apartheid.

Unsafe 4-unit apartment house now empty - June 20, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Betty Adams badams@centralmaine.com Staff Writer

AUGUSTA -- All the tenants are now gone from a four-unit apartment building on State Street that city officials recently deemed unsafe for living.

Officials had the first three apartments vacated early last week after a codes enforcement officer concluded that the decks providing the only access to the units were unsafe.

The remaining tenants in the ground-floor apartment were told Friday to find new housing and to be out by Monday.

"We told them we didn't feel comfortable even allowing anyone on the premises with the condition of those decks," Robert Overton, the code officer, said Tuesday.

The family, which had several young children and a dog, found a new home within walking distance of their old residence, Overton said.

He said some families still might have belongings on site, but he told them to limit their visits because of the decks. He said the 11 State St. building cannot be re-occupied until the decks are repaired and inspected and until the entire building is inspected for compliance with life and safety codes.

The owner, Kenneth Ouellette, has not responded to several messages left in recent weeks at his Monmouth home phone number.

Overton said Ouellette met with him and with Augusta Fire Chief Roger Audette last week about the property. Ouellette did not say what he planned to do about the building, Overton said.

Clear the decks: Nokia cuts 10,000 jobs in radical shake-up - June 15, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Nokia is to lose 10,000 workers and transform its management team in a bid to return to profitability, the Finnish handset manufacturer has said.

A series of moves, which also includes the selling-off of luxury handset division Vertu and the acquisition of imaging technology from Scalado, was announced early on Thursday. The heads of Nokia's mobile phone, markets and marketing departments have also been ousted as part of the reorganisation.

Nokia is to cut 10,000 people from its workforce as it looks to 'broaden' the price range of its Lumia phones. Image credit: Ben Woods/ZDNet

"We are increasing our focus on the products and services that our consumers value most while continuing to invest in the innovation that has always defined Nokia," Nokia chief Stephen Elop said in a statement. "We intend to pursue an even more focused effort on Lumia, continued innovation around our feature phones, while placing increased emphasis on our location-based services."

Vertu is to be sold to the private equity firm EQT VI, although Nokia will retain a 10 percent minority stake in the business.

Nokia has not broken down its lay-off numbers by country indeed, the company's representatives refused to say how many people Nokia employs in the UK, let alone how many cuts will take place here. However, Nokia did say it would be closing research and development facilities in Ulm, Germany, and in Burnaby, Canada.

The company's manufacturing plant in Salo, Finland, is also going to be shut down, although R&D will continue at the site. Jobs will also go among Nokia's marketing, sales, IT, corporate and support staff, the company added.

"These planned reductions are a difficult consequence of the intended actions we believe we must take to ensure Nokia's long-term competitive strength," Elop said. "We do not make plans that may impact our employees lightly, and as a company we will work tirelessly to ensure that those at risk are offered the support, options and advice necessary to find new opportunities."

    Cheaper Lumia, better photos

The renewed focus on Lumia, Nokia's range of smartphones running Microsoft's Windows Phone OS, will make the devices "available to more consumers", the company said.

USS Texas' battle against rust may prove too costly - June 13, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

As tourists blithely strolled the decks of the USS Texas on Tuesday, workers struggled below decks - without air conditioning - to control a leak that was pouring nearly 1,000 gallons of seawater into the historic battleship every minute.

As the leak entered its fourth day, ship manager Andy Smith expressed optimism that Tuesday's effort would complete siphoning a film of oily water from the ship's bilge. By midday, more than 6,500 gallons of the oily soup, the result of seawater flooding internal oil tanks, had been removed. Smith said the leak may be repaired Wednesday.

Advocates for preservation of the vessel, which served in both world wars and marked its 100th anniversary last month, say the latest leak underscores the severity of salt water-inflicted damage the ship has sustained. In 2007, voters approved a $25 million bond issue to address the ship's problems. State officials, however, have determined that sum will be insufficient to repair the ship and display it in a dry berth as planned.

Complicating the picture is a state Legislative Budget Board decision barring the money's use for any purpose other than dry-berthing. Battleship Texas project manager Neil Thomas said partners in the project, including the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the Battleship Texas Foundation and the Naval Sea Systems Command, are deliberating their next move.

Foundation executive director Bruce Bramlett said he believes the ship is in such perilous condition that it cannot safely be moved or removed from the water without on-site repairs. Over the long term, he said, leaving the vessel in the water is a "death sentence."

"You have to repair it and dry berth it or you're just kicking the can down the road. We want to see the Texas preserved for generations to come," he said. Bramlett's group has donated $3 million to the battleship project.

    $23 million remains

Thomas, a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department employee, said that approximately $23 million remains from the bond issue. Repairing the ship and placing it in an on-land display would cost approximately $50 million. Without Legislative Budget Board approval of alternate repair plans, he said, the use of bond issue money is limited to a dry berthing project.

In 1988, the badly rusted ship was towed to a Galveston facility for repair. It was returned to its mooring at the San Jacinto Battlefield Historic Site two years later.

In the most recent leak, which Smith described as the worst in five years, workers noticed the Texas listing and sitting low in the water during a routine Saturday morning inspection. Upon investigating, workers found water pouring into the ship's bilge beneath the engine room.

Card Sharp: Emmanuel José has stacked his decks with decorative designs - June 10, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Casey Toth - newsobserver.com

Emmanuel Jose completes this week's oversized playing-card from his 52-week series from a bird-themed deck of cards in his Raleigh home Friday, May 18, 2012.

For most people, playing cards are something to, well, play with. But for Raleigh artist Emmanuel Jos, theyre something to create.

Jos, 28, makes his living as a lab support technician. And since January 2011, hes also been making one giant paper-cut card per week in transformation decks, where the card symbols are incorporated into the design. Then they go into frames for display, and Jos sells prints of them.

Jos called last years project his Curator Deck, with artwork invoking everything from fairy tales to biohazard symbols and various avian images. Birds figure even more prominently into Joss in-progress 2012 deck, Clipped Wings. Brainstorming ideas last year, he came up with so many focused on birds that he decided to make this years deck all birds. If he keeps the project going into 2013, possible future themes include Greek deities, the circus or mythological monsters.

Even though Jos doesnt really play cards himself, he has always been fascinated with them as art objects. In an art class at Davidson College, he began a series of paintings with his friends appearing as face cards. His professor was unimpressed, so he was forced to abandon it.

Still, the idea kept nagging at him. Finally, in late December of 2010, Jos set a goal of making a paper-cut card a week through 2011.

It was a way to end my artistic drought, he said. I had been an art major, but I wasnt creating art consistently since I got a job. This was a means of getting myself back into it setting a personal goal with deadlines, but without worrying about grades and teachers. It was a great mental challenge.

For all that, Jos was skeptical he could pull it off until Jan. 3, 2011, when he made his first card the ace of spades as a phoenix, which remains his favorite card from last years deck. That convinced him the project was doable.

He works in numerical order, ace through king. Throw in two jokers and a back design, and each deck involves 55 pieces of art. Jos uses scissors and X-ACTO knife to cut all the elements by hand, mounting them on the cards with precise detail.

Instrument integration begins at Goddard on MMS spacecraft - June 9, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

An instrument deck for NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale mission is readied for installation of instruments. Two instruments have already been installed: the white box on the lower right is the Energetic Ion Spectrometer; the black box in the upper right is the Central Instrument Data Processor. Credit: NASAGSFCLambert

The decks have arrived. Engineers working on NASA'S Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission have started integrating instruments on the first of four instrument decks in a newly fabricated cleanroom at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. The MMS mission consists of four identical spacecraft, and each instrument deck will have 25 sensors per spacecraft.

"This is the first time NASA has ever built four satellites near simultaneously like this," says Craig Tooley, project manager for MMS at Goddard. "It feels like we're planning a giant game of musical chairs to produce multiple copies of a spacecraft. One instrument deck might be 2/3 finished, while another one is 1/3 finished, and the same people will have to test a nearly complete deck one day, and install large components on another one another day."

MMS will fly the four spacecraft in formation to investigate how the sun's and Earth's magnetic fields connect and disconnect, explosively transferring energy from one to the other -- a process that occurs throughout the universe, known as magnetic reconnection.

By going into space to observe magnetic reconnection where it is happening, MMS will both study a fundamental physical process that occurs throughout the universe as well as observe one of the ultimate drivers of our space weather, which affects modern technological systems such as communications networks, GPS navigation, and electrical power grids.

Goddard manages the MMS mission and is building the spacecraft in-house on-site in a specially designed cleanroom. Dr. James L. Burch at Southwest Research Institute (SWRI) in San Antonio, Texas is the principal investigator for the MMS science investigation. SWRI oversees the entire MMS instrument suite for NASA, with various instruments being built at other institutions, including the Fast Plasma Instrument, which is being built at Goddard.

DJ Mark Farina Will Not Be Kicked Off the Decks at Mighty This Weekend - June 8, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Following a June 2 incident in Las Vegas in which he was barred from performing a scheduled DJ set at the nightclub Marquee -- because, he was told, the crowd was sick of house music -- San Francisco club Mighty is showing its support for local DJ Mark Farina with this "Team Farina" flyer.

"My liaison said manager was getting complaints from table service crowd," Farina tweeted about the incident last weekend. He added in another message that he didn't get to even start his set before being told that he couldn't play. "Apparently too much house for this Vegas crowd," Farina tweeted.

Not only will Mighty make sure Farina gets to play his entire set this weekend, management will not even suggest to him what to spin. So what happened in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

Farina is set to play with DJs Miguel Migs and Julius Papp at the Salted anniversary party on Saturday, June 9 at Mighty. Advance tickets are $20. But before that, he's ironically scheduled to return to Vegas today (June 7) to play at the Boulevard Pool at the Cosmopolitan as part of the EDMBiz Conference. Here's hoping that crowd lets this well-known S.F. DJ play whatever he wants.
