Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge deck repairs begin on Jan. 4th – Local 22/44 News - December 23, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Two weeks from now, an historic local bridge is getting a round of repairs. Its the Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge spanning the Connecticut River.

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation maintains the bridge. Beginning on Monday, January 4, the agency will start to replace several worn-out wooden planks on its deck.

At first, the bridge will be closed to traffic from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. every day for a week. For four more weeks after that, one lane of alternating traffic will be open at a time during those same hours. Both lanes will be open once the repairs wrap up each day. Transportation officials expect the work to be complete in early February.

The Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge has been standing since 1866 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Until 2008, it was the longest covered bridge still in use in the United States.

A terrifying new way to view Mt Fuji: From a deck at the top of a giant rollercoaster! – SoraNews24 - December 23, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Fujiyama Tower promises a viewing like nothing youve ever experienced before.

No trip to Japan is complete without seeing Mt Fuji at least once, and soon youll be able to see it from a brand new angle, thanks to a thrilling new setup at the Fuji-Q Highland amusement park in Yamanashi Prefecture.

Home to a number of thrill rides, Fuji-Q Highland is most famous for its giantFujiyama roller coaster, which stands at 79 metres (259 feet) in height, and this is where the new viewing deck will be installed.

Oncethe tallest roller coaster in the world when the park opened in 1968, Fujiyama is now the eighth highest in the world.

    Image: Wikipedia/ Geomr~commonswiki

Those who ride the rollercoaster get to enjoy jaw-dropping views of Japans tallest mountain as they whizz by the circular section in the middle. A view this good is a shame to waste on a ride-by that takes a few seconds, though, so Fuji-Q have now come up with a brilliant new way for non-riders to enjoy it too.

Called Fujiyama Tower, the new viewing area comprises several different experiences for visitors to try, depending on their daredevil levels. First up, theres theFujiyama Sky Deck Observatory, where people can enjoy sweeping views ofMt. Fuji and its surrounding areas from a height of about 55 metres (180 feet).

Photos from here, where you can see a full vista of Mt Fuji rising up from the earth, promise to be spectacular.

The next activity, called Fujiyama Walk, is not for the faint of heart. Previously reserved for staff, who got to enjoy this unique view of Mt Fuji while performing daily inspections of the rollercoaster tracks above, this windswept passage without handrails can now be enjoyed by visitors attached to a harness.

The third new activity on offer is atube-type slider called Fujiyama Slider, which is said to transport visitors from the deck to the ground level in moments.

The slider wraps around the elevator shaft at the centre of the tower.

The Fujiyama Tower is being built at a cost of1.07 billion yen (US$10.35 million), and is scheduled to open to the public in the summer of 2021. Interestingly, Fuji-Q Highland says visitors to the Fujiyama Tower will be able to enjoythe screaming entertainment that is typical of the park, which contradicts the scream in your heart request they put out as a coronavirus countermeasure for riders earlier this year.

North Olmsted clarifying residential zoning codes related to carports, temporary ramps, decks and patios – cleveland.com - December 4, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio -- Clarifying residential zoning codes involving everything from carports and recreation vehicles to temporary ramps, decks, patios and air conditioning units is what North Olmsted officials are currently hoping to achieve with a new ordinance, expected to soon be passed by City Council.

Its a bit of housekeeping when we find areas of the code that are unclear, that residents have a hard time understanding or we get variance requests with a certain frequency, North Olmsted Director of Planning and Community Development Kimberly Lieber said. This ordinance is a bundling together of a number of those issues.

One of the more substantive updates involves temporary ramps for accessibility in residential areas. As the zoning code currently reads, there is no mention of such necessary structures.

Lieber said the city wanted to provide that relief valve permitting temporary ramps on a case-by-case basis.

Its always better to establish a rule for how something can be done rather than kind of treat everything as a one-off, Lieber said. Thats a good one, especially in a community that might have some aging structures and aging residents and more people with the need for ramps into their homes while they deal with health or wellness issues.

As for patios and decks, the new ordinance differentiates between the structures normally located in the rear of homes.

They could be either covered, uncovered or a grade, so not all decks and patios are created equally, Lieber said. You can think of somebody that pours a patch of concrete in their back yard for their patio furniture or you can think of something that rises almost to the level of a home addition that might have a roof covering or something much more elaborate.

Our code really didnt distinguish between something that was impactful and something that was kind of a minor backyard improvement.

The need for the updated language involves the required rear-yard setback for any type of patio or deck that is contiguous to the dwelling.

Considering that the North Olmsted Building & Zoning Board of Appeals typically grants deck and patio variances, Lieber said the city is creating a tiered system where only the bigger structures will require approval.

The code regarding air conditioner units and generators also involves setbacks. The former now emit less noise, allowing for placement on the side of homes, while the latter can be quite loud and will require placement in the rear of the yard.

Regarding recreational vehicles parked in driveways, the North Olmsted Law Department requested that the city remove its allowance for 72 hours during any 21-day period.

They felt our current language created a cat-and-mouse situation with property-maintenance inspectors and property owners, Lieber said. It created a really difficult situation for inspectors to enforce, but the reality is we want people to be able to maintain their recreation vehicles.

If theres a cover on it and its sitting in the driveway, its clearly stored. So inspectors will use other standards to determine whether or not it meets the criteria.

While carports are still not permitted, the updated code also prohibits temporary and portable carports.

Codes should be accessible to residents, who can read and understand what their property rights are, Lieber said. We felt like a code amendment was appropriate.

Its just good practice for zoning when you find areas that might be slightly flawed or unclear to clean them up when you can.

WAUWATOSA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A lot of holiday celebrations are looking different this year, but that isnt stopping a dedicated group of Santas helpers at the Ronald McDonald House in Wauwatosa. Every year, the visual marketing team from Kohls comes out to deck the halls. They set an elaborate light display outside featuring presents, ornaments and Christmas trees.

Whoa! They're coming, Shelly, one of the volunteers yelled as a three-foot ornament started rolling down the hill in front of the house.

Nearby, massive gift boxes were being stacked up, and lights were being strung everywhere.

The team and I are really excited, every year, to be able to do this event, said Sandy Cherry. We look forward to it all year long.

Cherry is the visual presentation manager at Kohls. The team is responsible for all of the displays and decorations you see at the stores.

We've had a great day today weather-wise, sometimes it's freezing, she said with a laugh. But, either way, we're thrilled to volunteer for Ronald McDonald.

Considering the job they do all week long, it makes sense Cherry and the team are good at decorating.

They're the little elves that show up in the store and make everything look pretty, said Tara Geiter, Kohls director of community relations.

Each piece is staked into place, so it can withstand any winter weather. Every year for the last 10, these volunteers have been decorating at the Ronald McDonald House.

This year, it looks like a lot of candy canes and Santa hats and Christmas lights outside, Geiter said, surveying the scene.

But this year, these elves are all wearing masks and trying to stay six feet apart, even when carrying the bulky decorations.

Definitely volunteering has looked different, Geiter said. Normally, you'd see high fives and hugs and all that, and obviously that's not something we're doing.

Inside the Ronald McDonald House, it looks a little different, too. The Kohls team picked out shiny green garland to decorate inside.

Last year we did new green trim in 100 stores, so we decided we'd use some of the prototypes from that, Cherry said.

But its Ronald McDonald House volunteers putting it up.

Typically, we would invite them in and really have them deck the halls inside. This year of course, like everything else, that's different, said Melissa Marney.

Marney is the marketing director at the Ronald McDonald House Eastern Wisconsin. She said keeping families safe during the pandemic is their top priority. Families are here from far away to get medical care for their sick kids.

Even during Covid, we've never closed our doors or stopped admitting families, Marney said.

That means families will be staying at the house through the holidays, and kids need to know Santa can still find them. Marney took CBS 58 on a tour inside, stopping at one special door.

Dropping that token into this fountain is what unlocks the magical door, she said, pointing at a fountain next to the door.

Once inside, the Magic Room as they call it, looks a little like Santas Workshop. Shelves are lined with toys from the floor to the ceiling.

As you can imagine, a lot of ooh and ahhing, Marney said.

Each child can select one toy and one book. There are even gift cards available for the older kids.

The generosity of our community is what makes this house a home, Marney said.

The Ronald McDonald House can serve 70 families at a time. Theyre hosting 20-30 families right now. Making it feel like home is important.

They get so excited when they see the lights come on. We plug them in and they're like, oh my gosh, Santa's coming, Cherry said.

Geiter said its an important gift Kohls can give this time of year.

I think our associates have been able to see that kind of impact first-hand and it's pretty meaningful and important, she said.

And its a reminder of what this time of year is all about.

When those lights twinkle, so do their eyes. It's just the best thing to see, Marney said.

Marney said RMDH is using toys differently this Christmas, since they have fewer children than usual staying at the house. But she said gift card donations always go a long way towards helping families celebrate the holidays.

Global Flooring Decks Adhesives Industry Market To Witness Huge Gains Over 2020-2026 - The Courier

The ‘Below Deck’ Franchise Nearly Sunk Its Own Ship This Year – Decider - December 4, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Congratulations on unwittingly earning your degree in maritime law this year! If youre a dedicated viewer of the Below Deck franchise on Bravo, which includes Below Deck, Below Deck Mediterranean and new series Below Deck Sailing Yacht, you now know exactly what you can and cannot do (and be in possession of) on a big old boat. The course was tough but we all got there. Our certificates must still be in the mail somewhere

Because this year found the reality TV franchise navigating some choppy-ass waters. Ratings-wise, it was smooth sailing (yes, you can expect the puns throughout) as millions of people tuned in from their homes for a fun escape, including celebrity fans such as Schitts Creeks Dan Levy and long-time viewers Jimmy Fallon and Chrissy Teigen. But content-wise, well, where each show docked instead (told you) was in an infamous Port of Drama (cant stop, wont stop).

We already know 2020 was a rough year for us all, and even the Rich People Only world of yachting wasnt exempt. And look, the coronavirus pandemic can (and will) explain a lot of the tolls it took on this current season of Below Deck, which is airing on Monday nights on Bravo. But we watched three other seasons that were filmed long before the world shut down, and theyve got a whole lot more to answer to.

Lets take it back to Season 7 of Below Deck. If youre like me, youve blocked a healthy portion of this out of your mind, so I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it has not even been a full calendar year since weve witnessed the repeatedly vile behavior of the brus. Did you just feel a shiver down your spine too? Yeah, same. In short, the men ganged up and acted like little assholes on a school playground in order to be mean to (and gaslight, v. cool) the women on the show. Perhaps you remember the disturbing moment in the van when Ashton was unable to reach Kate Chastain in the back seat and so he punched a window instead? That aired at the very end of 2019, but the lack of ramifications trickled on into 2020. The season didnt end until February with a super frustrating reunion (save for the modern woman brilliance of stew Courtney Skippon), which was followed by the announcement that Kate would not be returning to the show after six seasons of supreme sass. Woof, all around. What we didnt yet know was that during this same month, cameras resumed filming for Season 8 (which is what were watching now)just as coronavirus was on the horizon.

In fact, it was likely due to coronavirus that Below Deck Sailing Yacht had as large of an audience as it did, as we were all stuck inside while the majority of the season aired, desperate for an escape, or even just a thatll do show we could count on to be regularly available on TV. The show premiered in February with Chef Adam Glick, formerly of Below Deck Med, tying the new series to the existing ones. Except his journey on the show waslets go withnot ideal. Its always important to have an open mind about any shows first season. Even this one, which shouldve been smoother than most, right? But between the odd and unpredictable casting mix (in a bad way) and the lack of any real drama (also in a bad way), we quickly learned that too much of a good thing is very real, even if this thingwasnt all that good.

It wasnt all bad though. Captain Glenn seems like a nice guy.

But this show just could not find the wind in its sails (here I go again!) and we as viewers needed a little bit of time to miss any forms of Below Deck.

Ah! But up ahead was Season 5 of Below Deck Mediterranean. Lets all take a deep breath before we dive into this one.

Ill just mention the name Lara here (again, a shiver down the spine) and move along because really, what even was that? I still dont know if I just feel happy that a person like Chef Kiko exists in the world at all (and his good vibes could be felt through the screen this summer) or if I am full of rage that a misguided Vegas-themed dinner (no but really, WHAT EVEN IS A VEGAS THEMED DINNER) led to his demise and departure from the show, and was ultimately the catalyst forsigh, everything else.

Once Kiko left the boat, Hannah Ferrier had zero allies in her corner. And even though she was on good enough terms with second stew Bugsy (oh yeah, she came back to the show and brought a lot of decorations for both her hair and the table), that was soon tested as bosun Malia White insisted on sharing a room with the new chef (conveniently her boyfriend), which wouldve left Hannah and Bugsy to actually have to deal with each other.

A blow-up about roommates was handled horrendously amongst a group of adults and even though Malia got her way, largely due to her weirdly unbreakable bond with Captain Sandy, on her way out of the former room that she shared with Hannah, Malia organized a magazine-worthy photoshoot of the contents of Hannahs purse which included Valium and a pen that was filled with either weed or CBD depending on who you ask. It doesnt matter. Neither had been reported to the boat at the start of the season and therefore, it was technically grounds for firing someone, though apparently so is You dont seem like yourself on this boat.

The bottom line is: it was beyond disgraceful the way Hannah was forced off of this boat and therefore this show. Maybe she wasnt for everyone and maybe you didnt love her, but you at least loved to hate her. It was dramatic, yesbut it was also despicable the way it all went down. The rest of the season which felt like it was comprised of about 300-400 episodes proved to be a total snoozefest, not in a way that was a relief, but in a way that it just didnt matter what Jess and Robs doomed relationship amounted to and that Chef Toms repeated tantrums were just one big eye roll.

Its wonderful that the Below Deck franchise has seen such warranted success for Bravo, but rolling right into the new season of Below Deck in early November simply felt like a lot. Put on a classic rom-com for a few Monday nights and let us come up for air before we board this new adventure! I miss missing this show. Though everyones always happy to see Captain Lee, its too early to appropriately assess this season, as were only a handful of episodes deep. Its nice to see Eddie Lucas return as bosun so that Captain Lee has a buddy, and Izzy is a promising personality. Francesca deserves a bit more time as chief stew to see what she can do, and despite a real doozy of a charter to kick it all off, overall, the season so far has been fine. Which, in this year, is a true compliment.

In a year where so much felt depressing and disastrous, it was a bummer to realize that included most forms of Below Deck, too. This is not a show that should ever be stressful, it should be (almost) as much fun as the charter guests are having drinking and partying in the middle of a bright blue ocean. From the brus to the bickering on Sailing Yacht to the bullshit of a vape pen (I KNOW YOU HAVE TO DECLARE IT OR PEOPLE CAN LOSE THEIR JOBS), I craved the fun, carefree, frivolous drama that would roll out at least as smoothly as the giant slide does over the side of the yacht. Hell, even the shows recognition in the New York Times felt awfully meh. All this is simply coming from a place of love: we count on this show to entertain us, to delight us, to cheer us up. And when it doesnt, well it feels like being handed a super-thin tip envelope, is all. But as we watch this current season and head into a new year (both Sailing Yacht and Mediterranean have reportedly managed to film their seasons already, so theres even more to come!), even with casts largely comprised of new cast members, I am hopeful for whats ahead for these brilliant Bravo shows. And at least we can always count on Captain Lee.

Below Deck airs Monday at 9 pm ET/PT on Bravo.
