Five Really Good Overlooked Decks (Since no one plays Effect Veiler) Part 2 - Video
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) Inspectors say it was a classic combination of a party and an aging deck, when one collapsed on the back of a McCandless home Sunday.
The inspector saw that it was probably the original deck built back in 1984 and it was showing typical signs of old age, said McCandless Land Use Administrator Bruce Betty.
When youre talking about a 29-year-old deck that means rusting lag bolts, and aging support joists.
And it just gives eventually, Betty said.
In this case, the lag bolts failed and the portion of the deck closest to the house dropped.
Fortunately for the 12 people on the deck at the time, no one was seriously hurt most bump bruises and minor cuts.
With our hilly terrain, decks provide a place of respite where back yards are unusable or non-existent an extension of our living space.
Most of us could look at the underside of a deck all day long and not have a clue what we are looking at so the key is to get a building inspector or someone who makes their living building decks to look at it for you. the key though is when do you do it, Betty said.
The materials of a deck do wear with weather and age and often give tell-tale signs its time for a safety check, like movement it didnt used to have or:
If you feel that the deck is beginning to sag or you see signs of age in it have somebody professionally come and take a look at it, Betty said.

PORTSMOUTH What exactly is molecular mixology?
Hit Surf Restaurant and Surf Sushi Bar this week to find out as the Spirit of the Seacoast Cocktail Week begins Tuesday, May 7 and leads up to the Portsmouth Hit the Decks Celebration on Friday, May 10.
The special weeklong event focuses on emerging trends in craft spirits and craft cocktails. Molecular mixology transforms alcohol into different forms, and taking on unique flavors, much like the trend of molecular gastronomy.
On Tuesday, mixologists at Surf Sushi Bar will don lab coats and infuse science with mixology, transforming your White Russian into a White Siberian, a frozen foam version of a 1980s cocktail using liquid nitrogen. Gin and tonics will be transformed into a cube using spherification, and your Manhattan will be transformed into a breakfast cocktail with flavors of maple and bacon.
On Wednesday, May 8, sake flights will be offered to experience the different classifications of premium sakes. Learn about the different methods used in sake production from the basic futsu, to the unfiltered nigori style and a sparkling sake. The second flight will take you up the sake classifications from junmai, to junmai gingo, to junmai daigingo.
Thursday is Local Craft Spirits Night. A celebration of the quality artisanal spirits being created locally. The trend of local craft spirits is on the same rise local craft beer was five years ago. New distilleries are popping up all over the country and New England is home to some of the pioneers in the industry.
Distillers from New Hampshire's two craft distilleries, Flag Hill Winery & Distillery in Lee and Sea Hagg Distillery in North Hampton, will be on hand to answer questions and educate you about how spirits are being made here in the Granite State.
The owners/distillers from Bully Boy Distillery in Boston, and representatives from the Berkshire Mountain Distillery in Great Barrington, Mass., will also be available for tableside banter and to enhance your knowledge of the local craft spirit movement.

He may be known as the Party Prince'.
But Prince Harry looked far from comfortable as he had a go on a pair of DJ turntables.
The 28-year-old third in line to the throne was at the Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies in Nottingham, England on Friday morning (AEST) when he was invited behind the record decks.
The flame-haired prince, who last year was famously pictured partying naked in Las Vegas, gingerly stepped up to the turntables as a rapper introduced him as 'DJ Prince Harry on the ones and twos'.
He grinned nervously as he scratched along to a rap about himself, before earning a big cheer from the watching crowd of students and lecturers who began chanting 'Harry! Harry!'.
The performance won positive reviews on social media sites, where video of the session was shared.
'He's got practice from Las Vegas,' was among the wry comments on YouTube.
Another added: 'Ha ha, legend!'
The DJing came as royal officials dismissed media reports Prince Harry was about to embark on a six-month secondment to the Australian Army.
Australian newspapers reported planning was under way for Harry to be formally embedded in an Australian army unit or would make an extended visit as an observer.
