The survey also discovered that owning a deck is not all fun and games. Deck maintenance was a major concern to the majority of the people responding the survey. More than half of respondents 54 percent stated that lower maintenance was their most desired deck improvement. And 38 percent cited periodic painting and staining as the most annoying aspect of their decks.

He now zips around the globe at clients' behestjust this week he was flown to Sydney for an event put on by Virgin Australia. The catch: he's no architect or designer. He's a cardstacker. In fact, Berg earned his first world record when he was a senior in high school"Just the beginning," he writesand has since trumped himself time and time again, most recently capturing the Guinness World Record for largest playing card house with an architectural complex (above right) that took almost two months and 4,000 decks of playing cards to build. He's crafted Cinderella's castle, (above left), the dome of the Iowa Capitol, NYC's Flatiron building, Beijing's Bird's Nest, and more, all without bending, folding, or gluing any of the pieces, and most constructed in front of an audience. "There are the viewers who think I must have hands of steel and a Ph.D. in structural engineering, and there are those who think I must not have finished high school and live in a van down by the river," he writes. "I always enjoy watching people watch me work."

In 2005, Berg took two weeks to construct a miniature NYC skyline in Times Square. Included: the Chrysler building, Empire State Building, Flatiron Building, and Yankee Stadium. According to his official site, the project was featured at the beginning of Good Morning America every day for 14 days, the longest time any subject has ever received continuous coverage.

Cathy and Brian Muma spent several years looking for just the right home to suit their family's lifestyle before finding 3016 Pine St. in Lower Pacific Heights. They wanted at least four bedrooms, hardwood floors, high ceilings, a two-car garage and usable backyard.

"We literally searched real estate sites and open houses regularly for years," Cathy Muma said. "It's funny how that just became part of our weekend routine."

Now with a career change taking the family overseas, the Mumas are putting the home they've lived in since 2010 and extensively remodeled on the market for $3.65 million.

Set on a one-way street, the Edwardian boasts modern and inclusive amenities like solar panels, flat-screen televisions and three separate decks.

Originally built in the early 20th century, 3016 Pine St. was remodeled in 2010. A 47-foot wall fashioned from red elm highlights the great room, which is complemented by 11-foot ceilings and dark-stained white oak floors. Large walls provide ample gallery space to display artwork, and the backyard offers a level grass pad and planting area visible from the three decks.

The great room concept suited the family well, Cathy Muma said, as they have young children.

"While the kids work on homework or projects at the kitchen table, I'm likely cooking or working at my computer," she said. "We thought about our working spaces, and theirs, and how we typically spend our weekends and evenings at home. We looked at everything that cluttered up our space and plotted where we would put things like the printer, computer, filing cabinets, outlets and wiring."

But what really stood out to the couple when they first toured the home was the pent room, which offers sweeping views of San Francisco, Cathy Muma said.

They were also impressed with the size of the kitchen, which after a remodel gave them a place to gather and entertain guests.

"We wanted a place that would be big enough that our guests would no longer have to eat in shifts," she said. "In our old house we had one dining table for six people and our dinner parties felt more like musical chairs; first the kids eat dinner, then the adults, then repeat the cycle again for desserts. Truth be told, that is the reality of how most San Francisco families entertain at home."
