Wilmington to spend $168,000 to clean city decks - October 15, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Market Street parking deck shown Wednesday, June 26, 2013 in Wilmington.

A list of numbers for the city's parking decks/vehicle capacity is available at the end of this article.

It's been more than four years since some of Wilmington's parking decks were last power washed. Worry not, though: Spray is on the way.

The city has plans to spend $168,000 on a three-year contract with a company that will spray its decks annually.

Yet Councilwoman Laura Padgett, who has complained about the state of the decks, said the decks should be cleaned more than once a year.

"This won't take care of the weekly yuck that gets applied to the decks," Padgett said at a Monday agenda briefing.

On Tuesday, the council will consider authorizing a contract with a Georgia firm that would power wash the Second Street, Market Street, Water Street and convention center decks.

For 2014, Clean Recover Inc. of Roswell, Ga., would bill $62,400 to clean the four decks. In the following two years, the firm would clean those decks, minus the Water Street facility, for $52,800 annually.

Clean Recover was the only company to bid for the work. The cleaning offer ranges in cost from $26 to $43 per parking space in the decks, according to the city. Though that amount is lower than what it costs Greensboro to do similar cleaning ($35 a space to $44 a space), according to the city.

Due to budget cuts, the city's decks were last power washed in the summer of 2009. This year's city budget includes a 14 percent increase in parking operating expenses to cover the costs for pressure washing, along with painting work and purchasing trash cans and cigarette butt urns.

Mysore decks up for Grand Dasara finale Mysore, Oct 13 : As Karnataka's cultural capital, Mysore decks up for the … - October 13, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Mysore, Oct 13 : As Karnataka's cultural capital, Mysore decks up for the grand finale of the 10-day Dasara festival Monday when the victory procession of caparisoned elephants will mark the triumph of good over evil.

Ahead of the Vijayadashmi day fest, the city of palaces, about 140 km from Bangalore, was gripped by religious fervour and gaiety.

The scion Srikanta Datta Narasimaharaja of the Wodeyar dynasty performed rituals and worshipped the royal armoury in the majestic durbar hall of the century-old Ambi Vilas Palace in the city centre.

Dressed in royal robes and sporting the king's headgear, the 60-year-old prince performed the ritual Ayudha pooja in the majestic durbar of the century-old palace amid chanting of Vedic hymns.

Present were his family members and hundreds of people who thronged the hallowed precincts for a glimpse of the grandeur that marked the auspicious ninth day (Mahanavami) of the fest.

The armoury, a treasure trove of about 1,000 weapons, some dating back to 14th century, is a priceless collection of the Wodeyar rulers.

Thousands of people from across the state and country and about 1,000 foreign tourists have descended here to witness the elephant carnival, which will be flagged off by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at the palace for a five-km march across the city's thoroughfares.

As Dasara is celebrated as the state festival with royal endorsement, elaborate arrangements have been made to recreate the grandeur of the past when the mega event used to be held by the rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire and Wodeyar dynasty since the 16th century.

Before the caparisoned jumbo Arjuna steps out of the palace, carrying atop the deity (Nandi Dhwaja) of Hindu goddess Chamundeshwari in the 750 kg golden chariot, a dozen priests will perform rituals at the auspicious time between 1.12 p.m. and 1.40 p.m..

This will be followed by floral tributes to the idol by the scion and the dignitaries between 1.55 p.m. and 2.23 p.m.

Cone Parking Decks clears inspection, repairs insist - October 12, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

On Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 7 and 8, the Cone Parking Decks underwent a structural inspection. The inspection included a routine maintenance procedure and according to Gary Caton, director of Parking and Transportation Services (PATS), They are structurally safe and there are no serious issues.

There is maintenance construction currently taking place in the parking decks.

After a small piece of concrete fell last summer in Cone Deck one, contractors were hired to inspect the structure for signs of wear. Cone Deck one was built in 1977 and Cone Deck two was added in 1988.

The two parking decks I-beams were pre-cast, meaning they were poured and cured on-site. According to Caton, The beams are designed to flex, but after decades of use they are showing signs of wear.

After the repair of the concrete in Cone Deck one, the ceilings were painted white in both of the Cone parking decks in efforts to lighten the parking deck. After the ceilings were painted, some of the small cracks became visible and PATS called its attention for repair.

Contractors were hired to install U-clamps and other systems to repair the beams. According to Caton, the construction is only scheduled to take place on weekends and breaks, when the parking decks are least full.

Although yearly structural inspections are not necessary, PATS is hoping to begin a maintenance plan where all parking decks are inspected annually.

The last structural inspection of other parking decks on campus was in 2008, however less intensive inspections occur on a weekly basis. Other renovation projects have taken place recently including an overhaul of the lighting systems, which have been switched to greener and more efficient lighting systems.

PATS insures that all parking decks on campus are being well cared for and that they are all structurally sound.
