Spring and summertime present the return of several seasonal fire hazards, with activities shifting outdoors.
The most common problems involve cooking grills, wooden decks, and use of gasoline and other flammable liquids.
Ted Pisciotta, Shelton assistant fire chief for fire prevention, encourages everyone to consider the following:
Locate grills and any propane tanks/cylinders a safe distance from buildings, wooden decks and other combustibles. Never store propane indoors.
Check to make sure propane gas hose connection is tight and check hoses carefully for leaks. Applying soapy water to the hoses will easily and safely reveal any leaks.
Inspect and clean the venturi tubes and burner (check the owners manual) of gas grills, where spiders and small insects may make nests or spider webs. This could lead to a fire. Frequent inspection and cleaning is typically necessary before use.
Only use charcoal starter fluids designed for grills and do not add fluid after coals have been lit.
Eliminate dry leaves, combustible storage, or other debris from beneath wood decks. Avoid putting trash and other combustible materials on the deck.

Infrasense, Inc., a national leader in infrastructure nondestructive evaluations, recently carried out subsurface investigations for 34 bridge decks, representing nearly 250,000 square feet, throughout Ohio's District 1 region. The subsurface investigations were performed using vehicle-mounted high-speed ground penetrating radar (GPR) to scan the bridge decks and their approach slabs. Visual underside inspections were performed to supplement the GPR results. These tests provide a condition assessment of the reinforced concrete bridge decks without requiring lane closures and with no disruption to traffic flow.
Ground penetrating radar (GPR) data is collected at highway speeds to estimate rebar depth, corrosion conditions and deteriorated concrete. The GPR data is collected in a series of lines spaced 3 feet transversely across the width of the deck, with each line representing a cross sectional slice of the deck at a particular offset. Decks in good condition consist of strong and uniform radar reflections from the rebar. GPR data with weak and inconsistent reflections indicate rebar-level deterioration in the bridge deck. Infrasense uses its own proprietary software to analyze and map this data to provide comprehensive results for its clients.
A 2012 study carried out by an independent consultant for MnDOT evaluated the accuracy of Infrasense's GPR results provided to the Minnesota DOT. The study compared the predicted quantities for 12 decks surveyed by Infrasense against subsequent construction repair quantities. The study found that, on average, Infrasenses predicted deterioration quantities were within 3.2 % of the documented construction quantities.
Ground penetrating radar surveys provide transportation agencies with accurate and comprehensive bridge deck condition information, enabling effective preservation, rehabilitation, and replacement decisions. With large bridge deck inventories, highway agencies have primarily relied on visual inspection at the network level. Since the mechanisms of deterioration occur below the surface, their manifestations are not readily seen in the visual inspections. As a result, visual deck assessments are often inaccurate, and do not provide a sound basis for planning repair and rehabilitation.
Traditionally, highway agencies have employed sounding (chain or hammer) to identify delaminated areas for project-level rehab. Although sounding has proven reliable, the labor and closures required for a sounding survey makes it prohibitive for obtaining data of a large number of decks. Also, sounding is not effective when there is an asphalt overlay. In response to these limitations, a number of highway agencies, including ODOT, have utilized alternative methods such as ground penetrating radar.

The observation decks on the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower in Chicago that appeared to crack beneath a family reopened Friday after it was inspected and fixed by the building.
Bill Utter, a building spokesman, told MyFoxChicago.com that the cracks reported Wednesday night were actually on a scratch-resistant coating of the glass structure, and never jeopardized the structural integrity of the box.
"The public was never at risk," Buildings Commissioner Felicia Davis told the station. "The integrity of the structure was never compromised. There is this additional layer on top that is intended to take the scrapes and scratches from routine use by the public. That coating on the glass cracked."
The issue surfaced after relatives visiting from California reported hearing the glass floor begin to crack.
Alejandro Garibay, who was visiting the tower with his family, said: "When I put my hand down to push myself and stand up, I hear it and I feel the glass just crack. I felt on my palm all these little pieces of glass."
After alerting an observation deck worker, the family took out their cellphones to take pictures of the cracks.
"I remember heavily breathing, then I hugged my cousin Tony like, 'Oh my God, we're alive," said David Cazares.
The tower features four glass enclosures collectively called The Ledge, which opened in 2009 and give tourists the feeling of standing suspended in midair 1,353 feet above the ground and 4 feet away from the building. They're actually more like boxes than balconies, with transparent walls, floor and ceiling.
Visitors are treated to unobstructed views of Chicago from the building's west side and a heart-stopping vista of the street and Chicago River below for those brave enough to look straight down.

When short-term vacation estate rental and real estate development firm owner, Glen Robinson of Ocean View Oahu, INC decided to take on the project of building a deck for two of his rental properties, it was important that he find a product that was durable, easy to install, and low-maintenance. Since Robinson has background in the housing industry, he knew that all of these qualities were vital to his project.
Being in real estate and the owner of several high-end, short-term Hawaii vacation rentals has taught me the value of both form and function, says Robinson. I gravitated towards the Wahoo AridDek System to save both on future maintenance and up front labor costs due to the products ease of installation and product durability.
Because AridDek is low-maintenance, there is no time or money spent sanding, panting, staining, sealing, or waterproofing. AridDek is manufactured with exact precision; its interlocking boards securely and easily lock into place every time which makes it easy to install. The durability of AridDek is outstanding; AridDek is resistant to staining, impervious to insects, and wont splinter, decay, or rot. AridDeks low-maintenance, ease of installation, and durability are just a few of the reasons Robinson chose AridDek.
As an added benefit, the water drainage feature [of AridDek] will make sure my substructure is protected from the elements for years to come, says Robinson.
AridDeks watertight features are a bonus to its design and benefits. The interlocking engineering of AridDeks aluminum decking results in a completely watertight deck that creates a dry outdoor living space below.
Whether it comes to needing a low-maintenance deck or a decking board that is easy to install and watertight; AridDek is a cost-effective answer to deck construction for any property owner.
