State Transportation Secretary Lynn Peterson is clearing the decks and restarting the search for a new director of Washington State Ferries.
She sent department employees an email Tuesday saying that interim director George Capacci (kuh-PAH'-chee) withdrew from consideration over the weekend and she decided not to hire the other candidate, former Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg (LAD'-en-burg).
Capacci will stay on in an interim role and then return to his position as deputy chief of operations and construction.
The department had hoped to name a new ferry chief by June 20 to replace David Moseley, who resigned in April after six years in the top job.
Transportation Department spokesman Lars Erickson says the department will undertake a nationwide search for a new ferries chief.

VICTORIA - Decks have become an essential feature of a modern home and a hub of activity for life in the summer, so most homeowners would rather spend their time enjoying them, not maintaining surfaces.
The weather across Canada, from snow to rain and hot sun, can cause serious deck maintenance issues, such as a need for sanding and staining every few years for optimal appearance and durability.
"With the Vancouver weather we get lots of requests for low-maintenance decks," says Jobie Mallett, owner of Vancouver's Little Star Renovations. "People want low maintenance, but I always tell them it doesn't matter what you put on, there is always going to be some kind of maintenance."
Instead of talking low maintenance with his clients, Mallett says he tries to divert their thinking to long lasting because, if nothing else, homeowners will have to power wash their deck every year to extend its life.
"It often comes down to the kind of stain they use," he says. "That is a big deal. People pick cheaper stains and end up having huge maintenance issues down the road."
Mallett says when a homeowner is spending $10,000 on a deck, an extra $200 on well-trusted premium stain is pennies when you consider the amount of maintenance needed in future if you put on a bad product.
"I've seen so many people put on a cheap stain because it has a big box store label on it, and then they have huge issues down the road because they have to try and remove the old stain to put a new one on," he says. "You get what you pay for, but it is well worth the money to buy a premium stain."

Five people were injured when a deck they were standing on collapsed at a Goderich-area hotel. A portion of the deck gave way as a group of 16 people posed for photos, causing some of the family members to fall around 10 feet to the ground below. With summer just around the corner, more and more families will be spending time on their decks, enjoying the warmer weather and barbequing. At the same time, property owners need to ensure their decks are sound after the harsh winter and wet spring weather, says Tony Defeo, owner of Total Fence Inc. Joist failure, board rot, post and beam failure, and foundation failures can also lead to collapse, as can using the wrong nails, screws, or other connectors and fasteners.
In addition to following a standardized code, Defeo adds that there are different local parameters to consider; seasonal weather patterns, for example, will dictate what kind of materials should be used. When building a deck in the Greater Toronto Area, its imperative to think about wind ratings, rain intensity, and snow loads.
