We're all busy, but this is still the perfect time of year to follow the example of trees and shed that which has outlived its usefulness.
For me, that starts with decluttering my life as much as possible. Spring may be the traditional time for house cleaning, but somehow, fall always seems like a more logical time to go through your closets and sort out what you want to keep and are ready to part with.
There's something about back-to-school season, even if it's practical to wear summer clothes for a few more months, that always makes me want to take a look at my wardrobe, reconsider colors and accessories and decide if this is the year I finally want to give up those last size 7s I've been clinging hopefully to, for too many years.
The argument that clothes I've loved are now out of style never is very successful for me. I've lived long enough to know that everything eventually comes back in style, albeit with a slightly different twist, sometimes. And most of us get more confident with age and experience about defining our own style, issuing ourselves artistic license to transcend conventions (or sometimes even saying to heck with the whole concept).
Still, I realize that there are some things in my wardrobe that I will never have the occasion or inclination to wear again. Cute, very high heels for instance. Things that were uncomfortable and restrictive, even when I had a 22-inch waist and was young and dumb enough to buy into the suffering-for-beauty notion. There are colors that I love on the hanger, but that make me look like an elderly green creature from the black lagoon.
My friend Marilyn, a retired librarian who shares my nostalgia for the classics, recently shared an excellent suggestion.
"Take pictures of things you love but no longer wear or use, then give them away," Marilyn advised.
Wonderful. You can have your memories and share things you love, too.
Another friend, years ago, suggested making notes about possessions that friends and family members admire. Then wrap and give them away for birthday or holiday gifts. I started doing that with holiday decorations years ago and now feel inclined to extend the concept to clothing, household accessories, art, books, kitchen gadgets and even furniture and appliances.
I don't think I'd qualify as a hoarder, but after 15 years in the same place, I'm amazed at how that once-seemingly infinite closet space has filled up.

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) --
Large, colorful signs specific to each city-owned parking deck will be displayed in all drive entrances and pedestrian entrances to make it easier for customers to remember where they parked.
"With every new development that comes downtown or every new event that comes downtown, it can sometimes create new challenges for parking, so we are trying to be proactive," said city parking administrator Gordon Dash.
Drivers will receive a color-coded map with their parking ticket. The map also gives parking deck addresses so visitor can find their way back.
"It sounds like it's a good idea," said Raleigh resident Gabrielle Paige. "Especially, if you're talking, I might go to a different area maybe a completely different level especially if I park upstairs."
This weekend the city will keep tabs on the effectiveness of the new program. An online survey will be posted on the City of Raleigh's website to get drivers' feedback.
If enough people give it the green light, Dash said the new color scheme could become a permanent fixture in downtown.
"If they like the idea then maybe we can look down the road at making this a capital expense," said Dash. "Parking should really be a non-event for folks."

Boston, MA (PRWEB) September 24, 2014
Infrasense, Inc., a national leader in detecting subsurface conditions, has recently performed subsurface investigations on 12 bridge decks in Wisconsin's Waukesha county using Infrared Thermography. These tests provide a condition assessment of the reinforced concrete bridge decks without requiring any cores or exposed rebar, and with minimal disruption to traffic flow.
Since 2007, Infrasense has used Infrared Thermography, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), or a combination of both to survey more than 350 bridge decks across Wisconsin for the state Department of Transportation (WisDOT). Using Infrasense's multi-phased approach, a quick and simple preliminary (Level 1) analysis is performed, and bridge decks in good condition can be identified and removed from further detailed analysis. Decks found to have more significant deterioration levels are mapped in detail (Level 2), providing data to accurately plan, program, and budget maintenance and rehabilitation.
The infrared data is collected in a series of passes across each deck, with each pass covering a deck width of between 12 and 15 feet. During the survey, selected areas that appear delaminated in the IR image are manually sounded to confirm the presence of delamination. Because many of these decks have overlays, the reinforcing can be 4-5 inches from the surface, and sounding is not always capable of detecting delamination at this depth. For those locations where the delamination cannot be confirmed by sounding, testing is carried out using the Impact-Echo method. By analyzing wave frequencies through the concrete, the impact-echo equipment is capable of detecting delamination at any depth throughout the thickness of the deck.
Ground penetrating radar data is collected to estimate rebar depth and corrosion conditions. The GPR data is collected in a series of lines spaced 3 feet transversely across the width of the deck, with each line representing a cross sectional slice of the deck at a particular offset. Decks in good condition consist of strong and uniform radar reflections from the rebar. GPR data with weak and inconsistent reflections indicate rebar-level deterioration in the bridge deck.
Many agencies apply GPR and IR separately as tools for bridge deck assessment, or use only one preferred method. Each method has specific strengths and weaknesses, and Infrasense uses a combination of both to create a more effective bridge deck condition assessment. By combining IR and GPR surveys, the maximum amount of information can be obtained for the least cost. Decks with concrete overlays are common in Wisconsin, and illustrate how GPR and IR methods complement each other. Infrared surveys are effective in detecting overlay debonding, while GPR is effective in detecting rebar-level delamination. Combining GPR and IR methods becomes economical when applied with a two-level survey approach.
