    TRI-STATE NEWS HEADLINES

From our newsroom to your inbox weekday mornings at 9AM.

FORT LEE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) Police in Bergen County, New Jersey, arrested two men on Friday after allegedly catching them with more than 3,000 decks of heroin that they allegedly planned to sell.

Yeuri Jimenez, 29, and Lenny Montero, 31, both of the Dominican Republic, were both arrested around 8:30 a.m. Friday by Bergen County police, according to a department news release.

Bergen County police Officer Robert Duboue pulled over the two men on Route 4 in Fort Lee, after he noticed the vehicle Jimenez was driving was speeding and drifting out of its lane, police said.

Both suspects provided conflicting stories and appeared nervous as the officer questioned them, police said.

Officer Duboue searched the vehicle and found 3,010 decks of heroin in a hidden trap in the vehicle, with an estimated street value of over $100,000, police said.

Jimenez and Montero were charged with first-degree possession with intent to distribute heroin, and third-degree possession of heroin, police said. Jimenez was also charged with fourth-degree possessing a false government document, as police allegedly caught him with a fake Pennsylvania drivers license that he tried to use as ID.

The suspects were ordered held on $50,000 bail at the Bergen County Jail pending a court appearance at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

Nightlife reports: a tour of Amsterdam's bar and clubs - October 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

With its flower boxes, cycle lanes and fairy light-strewn canals, Amsterdam provides a blissfully pleasant backdrop for a big night out. But behind the quaintness is a progressive nightlife scene, which culminates each October in one of the worlds biggest electronic music showcases, Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE).

Ahead of next weeks five-day festival and conference which draws more than 2,000 international electronic artists, who can be found performing in any corner of the city that can fit a sound system I dropped by for a snapshot of the after-dark experience. I recruited local DJ and producer Marco Sterk, better known as Young Marco, to take me on a tour of his favourite spots that tell the story of how, over the past two decades, Amsterdam has grown into one of Europes most important dance music destinations.

We meet in the city centre, in an alley outside Red Light Radio a former brothel thats now an important hub for local DJs before cycling over to another historic base for the citys electronic scene; Rush Hour Records. If you dont know what to do for the night, this is the place to find out whats going on, says Marco, handing me a slickly designed flyer for the last party he played at. For the last fifteen years its been the most important thing for underground dance music. Its been a platform for people to come up through, like local heroes San Proper and Tom Trago, and even myself.

As it reaches 7pm we nip over to Caf Belgique for our first drink. Vintage beer signs fill the walls of the tiny pub, and a giant pair of red lips hangs from the ceiling in the corner. I think the tourists are scared to walk in, it looks too local, says Marco. The pub may be one of the smallest in the city, but that hasnt stopped it squeezing a set of decks in, providing a tiny yet atmospheric stage for undergound DJs. I ask Marco what makes his citys nightlife special. Its an extremely concentrated city, he says. Then he adds what, for me at least, will always be the clincher: And you can always be home in five minutes on your bike.

We take a detour, via the IJ ferry, over to the ever cooler Amsterdam Noord to drop in on Tolhuistuin, a chic venue with an outdoor stage enclosed by trees and twinkling lights that is one of the citys newest cultural spots. By 2016 the Noord district will host an even bigger, more commercial venue: the Adam tower, once a Royal Dutch Shell office block, which is being renovated into a complex for creatives, that will include basement club, bar, restaurant and viewing platform.

Back in the main city, we head south to the Leidseplein area for a drink at one of the citys long-running bars, Cafe Lux, which Marco tells me is the only non-seedy late night bar in the city. Lux and Weber (a neighbouring sister bar run by the same people) have been favourite drinking spots for the citys creative types or indeed anyone who doesnt need to get up early during the week for almost 30 years. A relaxed door policy (anyone is welcome as long as they behave, the manager tells me) means both are crammed full most nights. Its also the perfect bouncing-off point for two of Amsterdams biggest venues: the elegant Paradiso concert hall and Melkweg housed in a former dairy. And not too far away, mid-way up the Overtoom, is former squat OT301 an arts venue with a cube-like interior that hosts regular club nights.

Next up is another old favourite, De Nieuwe Anita. Dressed up like a vintage living room, with stylish retro furniture, patterned wallpaper and a jam jar of single cigarettes for sale on the bar, its an easy-going venue popular with the art school crowd. Its like a party in someones house, says Marco, as we walk down the staircase into the basement club, where DJ Alex Figueira is playing a selection from his funk and afro-beat collection. You can have any kind of night here.

Ready to hit a club, we cycle to Studio 80 on Rembrandtplein. Hidden but for a dark doorway and the queue outside, its a small, old-school venue like a black box, says Marco. The club has been around for a few years, but has a new, young, programmer who keeps the line-ups fresh and uncompromised. Inside, young clubbers dance to thumping house music from its bespoke sound system, surrounded by flashing strip lights.

Our final stop is at one of Amsterdams most important underground dance music venues, Trouw. Filling a former newspaper printworks in the east of the city, the minimalist concrete rectangle is packed with a crowd who have come to see local Joris Voorn DJ tech-house all night long (literally), with label partner Edwin Oosterwal holding up the basement room. The blinds on the long windows are down and Voorn is hard at work behind the decks, almost lost in the sea of people dancing on the stage behind him.

Trouw and ADE have made the biggest contribution to getting Amsterdam to take itself seriously as a clubbing city, says Marco. Trouw created a crowd, educated a crowd.

Sir Alex Ferguson: Louis van Gaal is right to 'clear the decks and build his own team' at Manchester United - October 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The way hes approached it I think has been brilliant.

Ferguson, who is due to speak to 1,700 business leaders in Dublin on Thursday, retired in May 2013 after almost 27 years as manager at Old Trafford.

The Scot has repeatedly insisted he has no regrets about his decision to step down, with the 72-year-old pursuing off-field interests as well as fulfilling a role as a United director.

But he admits that, during a holiday to the Middle East last December, he momentarily missed the pressures of managing the club.

It was the first time Ive ever had a holiday in my life in December, Ferguson said. And Im sitting there at pool side in Abu Dhabi and I said to Cathy, I should be at Carrington! Meanwhile, the Colombian forward Radamel Falcao has reiterated his desire to remain at United for 'the coming years after scoring his first goal for the club against Everton on Sunday.

Falcao is currently on loan at Old Trafford from AS Monaco after completing a surprise move to United on the final day of the transfer window last month.

As part of the loan deal, United have already negotiated a fee to sign Falcao permanently at the end of his temporary move.

And the 28-year-old, who missed the World Cup due to a cruciate ligament injury sustained in January, admits he is determined to make a success of his loan move to ensure it becomes permanent.

Manchester United were the ones that gambled on me when it was very difficult to do so, Falcao said. It has been a very difficult year, not just in my professional career.

What happened at the start of the year (injury) affected me in every way, but it has also helped me grow as a human being, to think about many things, to mature.

Navy to Commission Amphib Designed for F-35s and No Well Deck - October 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Saturday will mark the formal commissioning of the Navy's newest amphibious assault ship, the USS America-- a big-deck amphib designed to more fully leverage the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter and the ability to air-drop Marines behind enemy lines.

Unlike previous Wasp-class amphibious assault ships, the America will not have a well-deck to launch connector vehicles that transport Marines and equipment from ship to shore over water. Instead, the America is specifically engineered for aviation. Compared with prior amphibs, the America has a larger deck space and hangar area for aircraft.

"We are changing the way we look at amphibious warfare. During D-Day you had amphibious assault vehicles go ashore with an assault on the beach. Now, we are looking more at Marine Corps aviation and how can we use those Corps assets we have on-board the ship to bring the fight inland. I think that this ship in particular gives us a tremendous capability to do that," said Lt. Dawn Stankus, a USS America spokeswoman.

In total, the America is configured to house up to 31 aircraft including as many as 12 MV-22 Ospreys and the CH-53 Super Stallion, AH-1Z Super Cobra, UH-1Y Huey, F-35 B Short-take-off-and-landing Joint Strike Fighter and MH-60 Sea Hawk helicopter, Stankus explained.

The America -- the first of as many of 11 planned America-class amphibs -- was built at a Huntington Ingalls Industries facility in Pascagoula, Miss.

The ship can transport up to 3,000 sailors and Marines, including elements of a Marine Expeditionary Unit, or MEU, designed for amphibious warfare. Amphibious technology on board the ship can include up to 60 HMMWs, Light Armored Vehicles, mortars, artillery and smaller Internally Transportable Vehicles, or ITVs, configured to drive into the back of an Osprey, Navy and Marine Corps officials described.

The concept behind the aviation-focus of the USS America is described, at least in part, in terms of what Navy and Marine Corps officials refer to as "vertical maneuver" -- an ability to move amphibious assets, gear, Marines, weapons and equipment inland using aircraft such as the Osprey. The idea is to air-drop forces behind potential adversaries' fortifications or front-line defenses.

"Maneuver warfare involves moving around the enemy instead of confronting them directly where they may have bunkers and all kinds of fortifications. Instead of just strong-arming through we can fly around them where they don't expect us," Cpl. Victor Shugart , 1st Battalion, 11th Marines, told Military.com

This kind of tactic could be coupled with a traditional frontal beach landing or amphibious assault so as to isolate an enemy force in between two approaching offensive combat forces, Shugart added.

"We can fly in behind enemy lines and survive for three days with supplies. We can do any kind of raid or assault that infantry might need using the aircraft on this boat," he said.
