Spook-tacular: Nashua family decks out home for Halloween - October 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

If anyone doubts Christopher Corbetts dedication to Halloween haunting, theyd be wrong.

If anyone doubts Christopher Corbetts dedication to Halloween haunting, theyd be wrong.

    Dead wrong.

Corbetts Wellesley Road, Nashua, home has developed or degenerated, perhaps into a ghastly collection of haunts, ghouls and crazed clowns, all for the frightful entertainment of area trick-or-treaters.

All year round, they stop by and ask me what Im building, when Im setting up, said Corbett, 26, on Tuesday. The Halloween season means his parents garage, shed, rented storage units and space under the porch empties out its mass of homemade scary creations and the yard becomes a full-blown spook maze.

A couple of them spend the winter in his bedroom, said his mother, Jennifer.

The process of setting up the giant spiders, monsters and assorted creeps takes about two weeks, he said. Currently, Corbett works in a machine shop, but he would like to turn his hobby into a full-time gig in animatronics or set design.

Its just a passion for Halloween, Corbett said. We started doing this years ago. Its something I like, and want to do it for a career.

As a kid, Corbett said, I always wanted to go to haunted houses. I loved the artwork. I like that scared feeling that your get. I havent gotten it in too many years.

Young visitors, however, may disagree based on his backyard creations of foam, pipe and wood. Giant black spiders loom tall. A medical operation, most definitely not following standard hospital procedures, takes place next to the porch. A less-than-cheerful clown on stilts will spew smoke when animated at night.

Cooper on H.S. football: Its time to reshuffle the decks - October 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

FILE PHOTO BY DANIELLE PARHIZKARAN/STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER

Old Tappan athletic director Tom Kaechele says the football landscape in the Big North has changed in the last three years. Since 2012, schools in the Big North United are 27-1 against fellow Big North schools, with the one win coming from Pascack Valley over DePaul in 2012. Old Tappan lost 42-0 to St. Joseph earlier this year.

In the last three years, Old Tappan athletic director Tom Kaechele has grown concerned as the gap has only widened among the football teams in the Big North.

The landscape has changed dramatically from where we almost beat Paramus Catholic [26-9 in 2011] until now, where if we played PC this year, who knows what the score would be, Kaechele said Thursday. Its a tough one to swallow.

The facts show that in the last three seasons, when schools in the Big North United (The Big Five Don Bosco, Bergen Catholic, DePaul, Paramus Catholic and St. Joseph) play what are called crossover games against other Big North teams, its not a fair fight. And they are becoming games that neither school wants to play any more, not even the ones who are winning, but options are limited.

Since 2012, schools in the Big North United are 27-1 against fellow Big North schools, with the one win coming from Pascack Valley over DePaul in 2012. The average score of those games is 44-9.

Old Tappan only had to play one crossover game this year, a 42-0 loss to St. Joseph. Kaechele said that he tried to opt out of the game with the Green Knights.

I asked out of the game, and [St. Joseph athletic director] Tony Karcich said he felt it was a good game; I said, I dont think so, we cant compete with you at your level, Kaechele said.

Big North Conference rules say that if both schools agree, they dont have to play. In this case, Kaechele wanted out, Karcich couldnt.

[Karcichs] decision was the only one that mattered, Kaechele said. To me, the phrase mutually agreed on is a bone of contention.

Infrasense Uses High Speed GPR and Infrared Thermography to Assess Bridge Deck Conditions in Colorado - October 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Boston, MA (PRWEB) October 29, 2014

Infrasense, Inc., a national leader in detecting subsurface conditions, has recently performed high speed scanning on 15 bridge decks across the state of Colorado. A combination of high-speed nondestructive tests were carried out at highway speeds, including a ground penetrating radar survey and infrared thermography scanning. In addition to the GPR and infrared testing, high resolution visual data was collected and used to map surface defects, including patching and spalling. These tests provide a condition assessment of the reinforced concrete bridge decks without requiring any cores or exposed rebar, and with no disruption to traffic flow. The results of these nondestructive tests will be used for future bridge rehabilitation planning.

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) data is collected to estimate rebar depth and corrosion conditions. The GPR data is collected in a series of lines spaced 3 feet transversely across the width of the deck, with each line representing a cross sectional slice of the deck at a particular offset. Decks in good condition consist of strong and uniform radar reflections from the rebar. GPR data with weak and inconsistent reflections indicate rebar-level deterioration in the bridge deck.

The infrared data is collected in a series of passes across each deck, with each pass covering a deck width of between 12 and 15 feet. Surveys are performed at normal driving speeds to prevent lane closures and traffic disruptions. During the survey, regular visual data is collected synchronously with the infrared data, so that surface features such as staining and patching can be differentiated and mapped in the infrared images.

Many agencies apply GPR and IR separately as tools for bridge deck assessment, or use only one preferred method. Each method has specific strengths and limitations, and Infrasense uses a combination of both to create a more effective bridge deck condition assessment. By combining IR and GPR surveys, the maximum amount of information can be obtained for the least cost. Decks with asphalt overlays are common in Colorado, and illustrate how GPR and IR methods can complement each other. Infrared surveys are effective in detecting overlay debonding, while GPR is effective in detecting rebar-level deterioration. Combining GPR and IR methods becomes economical when applied with a two-level survey approach.

About Infrasense, Inc. Since 1987, Infrasense, Inc. has applied the most current technologies to the most difficult challenges in subsurface scanning. Infrasenses engineers are able to nondestructively extract critical information from a diverse range of structures. The firm has conducted research to advance the field of subsurface detection, while also providing valuable information to clients across the country. The Time When Two Super Carriers Became Floating Army Helicopter Bases - October 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

In 1994 the USS Eisenhower and the USS America were deployed to Haiti with their decks full of Army choppers. The US was threatening an invasion if the Junta did not return power to elected officials, and the 10th Mountain Division and a unique combination of special forces were sent over via the two super-carriers to make sure it happened.

On July 31st, 1994, the United Nations Security Council passed UNSCR 940, authorizing the use of force to return Haiti back to its democratically elected government after a military coup, led by Raoul Cdras, seized power in 1991. Plans under the name "Operation Uphold Democracy" were quickly drawn up to deploy an overwhelming force to the island, both as a negotiating tool and for an actual invasion if need be.

As part of the plan, two US super carriers, the America and Eisenhower had their decks packed with various versions of H-60 Blackhawks, OH-58 Kiowas, AH-1 Cobras and H-47 Chinooks. The Eisenhower carried a force of 2,000 soldiers and 58 helicopters from the 10th Mountain Division and the America carried an assortment of special operations forces and choppers from the 160th SOAR 'Nightstalkers' for air support.

In addition to these super carriers turned helicopter bases and their embarked shock troops, portions of the 82nd Airborne and other forces staged out of Puerto Rico and off of other ships sailing off the coast of Haiti. By mid-September, all these forces, which fell under the command of Joint Task Force 120, were ready to descend on the island in mass, with over 25,000 troops participating, when, at the last minute, the military led government stepped down after emergency negotiations led by U.S. Senator Sam Nunn and retired Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Colin Powell finally came to fruition. As the invasion was more-or less in motion when word came of surrender, what was to have been a force poised to attack, turned instantly into a stabilization and peacekeeping force.

This rapid fielding of an invasion force and the resulting almost immediate pivot from offensive operations to peacekeeping and nation building duties is widely regarded as a showcase of how dynamic the US military had become in the post Cold War era. It was also a sign of just how far 'jointness' between the services had evolved over the prior decade. Seeing US Navy flattops loaded with Army helicopters was breathtaking evidence that the walls that traditionally had divided the services were indeed crumbling.

Dealing with independent MLAs- the first assignment before Devendra Fadnavis as Maharashtra chief minister - October 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

As the decks were clearedfor Devendra Fadnavisto be the next chief minister of Maharashtra on Tuesday, his list of to-do-things before proving majority has become a little longer.

Besides addressing the sensitivities of his own party MLAs before finalizing the portfolios, he has to deal with six independent MLAs as well those who have put forth their demand of ministerial berths in lieu of supporting the government.

The group of six independents led by Badnera MLA Ravi Rana submitted their charter of demands to Fadnavis when they visited him Tuesday evening to congratulate him. They sought timeonWednesday morning fromFadnavis to ink the deal before October 31.

The group which decided to back the government was formed on Monday night. Incidentally, the same morning, the independent MLAs were in talks with few small parties to forge an alliance and remain neutral. But they probably had a change of heart as BJP has yet not opened its card on support of Shiv Sena.

Ravi Rana told dna, We will be meeting with Fadnavison Wednesday with our demands of one cabinet minister's post, two ministers of state, and four chairmanships of state-run corporations with either cabinet or minister-of-state rank. Since, our support is must for a stable government, we are sure that our demands would be met.

Following of PM Narendra Modis mantra, the state BJP had already decided to have a slim cabinet. Considering the situation when BJP may have to allocate few berths to Shiv Sena should it support the government addressing the sensitivities of independent allies would not be an easy job for the young CM who has to handle multiple issues in the next 18 days.

While Fadnavis couldnt be contacted, Madhav Bhandari, the BJP spokesperson said, We would discuss the matter and come out with a solution.

The group comprises of Shirish Chaudhari from Amalner, Vinayak Patil from Ahmedpur, Mohan Phad from Pathri, Mahesh Landge from Bhosari, Baliram Shiraskar from Balapur, and Ganpat Gaikwad from Kalyan (east).

Seven independents got elected in the polls. Of them only Achalpur MLA Bachchu Kadu is not the part of this pressure group.
