In 1994 the USS Eisenhower and the USS America were deployed to Haiti with their decks full of Army choppers. The US was threatening an invasion if the Junta did not return power to elected officials, and the 10th Mountain Division and a unique combination of special forces were sent over via the two super-carriers to make sure it happened.

On July 31st, 1994, the United Nations Security Council passed UNSCR 940, authorizing the use of force to return Haiti back to its democratically elected government after a military coup, led by Raoul Cdras, seized power in 1991. Plans under the name "Operation Uphold Democracy" were quickly drawn up to deploy an overwhelming force to the island, both as a negotiating tool and for an actual invasion if need be.

As part of the plan, two US super carriers, the America and Eisenhower had their decks packed with various versions of H-60 Blackhawks, OH-58 Kiowas, AH-1 Cobras and H-47 Chinooks. The Eisenhower carried a force of 2,000 soldiers and 58 helicopters from the 10th Mountain Division and the America carried an assortment of special operations forces and choppers from the 160th SOAR 'Nightstalkers' for air support.

In addition to these super carriers turned helicopter bases and their embarked shock troops, portions of the 82nd Airborne and other forces staged out of Puerto Rico and off of other ships sailing off the coast of Haiti. By mid-September, all these forces, which fell under the command of Joint Task Force 120, were ready to descend on the island in mass, with over 25,000 troops participating, when, at the last minute, the military led government stepped down after emergency negotiations led by U.S. Senator Sam Nunn and retired Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Colin Powell finally came to fruition. As the invasion was more-or less in motion when word came of surrender, what was to have been a force poised to attack, turned instantly into a stabilization and peacekeeping force.

This rapid fielding of an invasion force and the resulting almost immediate pivot from offensive operations to peacekeeping and nation building duties is widely regarded as a showcase of how dynamic the US military had become in the post Cold War era. It was also a sign of just how far 'jointness' between the services had evolved over the prior decade. Seeing US Navy flattops loaded with Army helicopters was breathtaking evidence that the walls that traditionally had divided the services were indeed crumbling.

As the decks were clearedfor Devendra Fadnavisto be the next chief minister of Maharashtra on Tuesday, his list of to-do-things before proving majority has become a little longer.

Besides addressing the sensitivities of his own party MLAs before finalizing the portfolios, he has to deal with six independent MLAs as well those who have put forth their demand of ministerial berths in lieu of supporting the government.

The group of six independents led by Badnera MLA Ravi Rana submitted their charter of demands to Fadnavis when they visited him Tuesday evening to congratulate him. They sought timeonWednesday morning fromFadnavis to ink the deal before October 31.

The group which decided to back the government was formed on Monday night. Incidentally, the same morning, the independent MLAs were in talks with few small parties to forge an alliance and remain neutral. But they probably had a change of heart as BJP has yet not opened its card on support of Shiv Sena.

Ravi Rana told dna, We will be meeting with Fadnavison Wednesday with our demands of one cabinet minister's post, two ministers of state, and four chairmanships of state-run corporations with either cabinet or minister-of-state rank. Since, our support is must for a stable government, we are sure that our demands would be met.

Following of PM Narendra Modis mantra, the state BJP had already decided to have a slim cabinet. Considering the situation when BJP may have to allocate few berths to Shiv Sena should it support the government addressing the sensitivities of independent allies would not be an easy job for the young CM who has to handle multiple issues in the next 18 days.

While Fadnavis couldnt be contacted, Madhav Bhandari, the BJP spokesperson said, We would discuss the matter and come out with a solution.

The group comprises of Shirish Chaudhari from Amalner, Vinayak Patil from Ahmedpur, Mohan Phad from Pathri, Mahesh Landge from Bhosari, Baliram Shiraskar from Balapur, and Ganpat Gaikwad from Kalyan (east).

Seven independents got elected in the polls. Of them only Achalpur MLA Bachchu Kadu is not the part of this pressure group.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday cleared the decks for the execution of Nithari serial killer Surinder Koli after it dismissed his plea seeking review of the judgment upholding death penalty.

A Bench of Chief Justice H.L. Dattu and Justices Madan B. Lokur and A.K. Sikri dismissed the review petition after hearing Ram Jethmalani, who argued that there was gross miscarriage of justice as Koli had been falsely implicated in the case.

Mr. Jethmalani argued that Koli was convicted only on the basis of his own confession, which could not be relied upon.

One innocent life is more important than anything else. I am shocked that such a thing can happen in the judiciary as the prosecution had completely suppressed a vital document, viz. the autopsy report of a surgeon, which is a piece of evidence to prove Kolis innocence, he said.

Counsel pointed out that the surgeon, who performed the autopsy, was not examined during the trial.

He said it could be a case of organ trade and handiwork of a doctor, but an innocent person was being sent to the gallows.

The Chief Justice made it clear to counsel, You are introducing new facts for the first time which is not permissible under the rules. We cant entertain this review petition and we dismiss it.

On September 8, the apex court stayed Kolis execution pending disposal of the review petition in an open court. On September 12, the stay was extended till Tuesday. With the dismissal of the petition, it is now open to the jail authorities to execute the death sentence.

A skateboard is a type of sports equipment used primarily for the activity of skateboarding. It usually consists of a specially designed maplewood board combined with a polyurethane coating used for making smoother slides and stronger durability.

A skateboard is propelled by pushing with one foot while the other remains on the board, or by pumping one's legs in structures such as a bowl or half pipe. A skateboard can also be used by simply standing on the deck while on a downward slope and allowing gravity to propel the board and rider. If the rider positions their right foot forward, he/she is said to ride "goofy;" if the rider positions their left foot forward, he/she is said to ride "regular." If the rider is normally regular but chooses to ride goofy, he/she is said to be riding in "switch," and vice versa. A skater is typically more comfortable pushing with their back foot; choosing to push with the front foot is commonly referred to as riding "mongo".

Recently, electric skateboards have also appeared. These no longer require the propelling of the skateboard by means of the feet; rather an electric motor propels the board, fed by an electric battery.

There is no governing body that declares any regulations on what constitutes a skateboard or the parts from which it is assembled. Historically, the skateboard has conformed both to contemporary trends and to the ever-evolving array of stunts performed by riders/users, who require a certain functionality from the board. Of course, the board shape depends largely upon its desired function. Longboards are a type of skateboard with a longer wheelbase and larger, softer wheels.

Skateboards have three axes. The tail axis (running from nose to tail), the central axis (running straight down through the center of the board), and the short axis (running from the width of the board, perpendicular to the tail axis).

The two main types of skateboards are the longboard and the shortboard. The shape of the board is also important: the skateboard must be concave to perform difficult tricks.[1]

The following descriptions cover skateboard parts that are most prevalent in popular, modern forms of skateboarding. Many parts exist with exotic or alternative constructions. A traditional complete skateboard consists of the deck (often with griptape applied on top to enhance traction), trucks (with urethane bushings), wheels (with sealed bearings), bushings and nuts and bolts to fasten the truck and wheel assembly to the bottom of the deck. Older decks also included plastic parts such as side, tail, and nose guards.

Modern decks vary in size, but most are 7 to 10.5inches (17.78 to 26.67 centimeters) wide. Wider decks can be used for greater stability when transition or ramp skating. Skateboard decks are usually between 28 and 33inches (71.12 and 83.82 centimetres) long. The underside of the deck can be printed with a design by the manufacturer, blank, or decorated by any other means.

The longboard, a common variant of the skateboard, has a longer deck. One of the first deck companies was called "Drapped" taken from Jonny's second name. "Old school" boards (those made in the 1970s80s or modern boards that mimic their shape) are generally wider and often have only one kicktail. Variants of the 1970s often have little or no concavity, whereas 1980s models have deeper concavities and steeper kicktails.[citation needed]

Grip tape is a sheet of paper or fabric with adhesive on one side and a surface similar to fine sand paper on the other. Grip tape is applied to the top surface of a board to allow the rider's feet to grip the surface and help the skater stay on the board while doing tricks. Grip tape is usually black, but is also available in many different colors such as pink, yellow, checkered, camo, and even clear. Often, they have designs die-cut to show the color of the board, or to display the board's company logo.
