The staff at Shelby Childrens Clinic, a part of Carolinas HealthCare System, decked the halls to bring a little holiday joy into the lives of their patients.

Each year, Randy McDonald, PNP, and Patricia Grinton, MD, spearhead our Christmas decorations in a friendly competition with employees, Holli Helms, practice manager for the clinic, said in an email. This year, the employees have gone all out! We have Charlie Brown Christmas, Frozen, Peppermint Forest, Polar Express, the Grinch, and Christmas Carols all represented in the halls of Shelby Children's Clinic.

Patients and families have enjoyed the decorations this year, Helms said.

Usually when they are finished with their appointment, they ask if they can tour the whole building to see each theme, she said. It's been a fun opportunity to bring our staff closer together, and celebrate the season with our patient families."

Government staff decks the halls and doors - December 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SEBRING From a gingerbread house to a ski slope to the North Pole with Santa Clause, its looking like Christmas time at the Highlands County Courthouse and Government Center.

This year marks the third anniversary of a holiday door decorating contest that has grown to include the Highlands County Property Appraisers Office, Highlands County Supervisor of Elections Office and the Highlands County Board of County Commissioners office.

A total of 24 doors, including some hallways, were decorated for the holiday.

The first-place trophy was awarded to the Clerk of Courts Civil Division for its manger scene.

Court clerk Lisa Osha created a 4-foot high silhouette of one of the wise men and other figures for the manger scene.

Asha said her husband assisted her and she gave credit to her fellow civil division workers, Toni Kopp and Miranda Freeman.

Osha said Freeman did the labor-intensive work of putting everything on the wall, and Kopp created the white lettering and stars.

Second place was awarded to the Clerk of Courts administration for its depiction of the North Pole, and third-place went to the Clerk of Courts accounts payable and receivable for its winter wonderland with a ski slope and ice skating rink with cutout photos of the departments staff in skating poses.

The Supervisor of Elections Office received an honorable mention for its gingerbread house decorating scheme that covered a door and part of the hallway. It was made with brown construction paper and adorned with plenty of candy canes.

Santa Clause, wrapped in Christmas lights, covered the door for judges Dale Durrance and Olin Shinholser. Photos of the judges faces were placed on the bodies of elves.

Swede crowned Memory World Champion - December 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

HAIKOU, China, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- The Swedish winner of the Memory World Championships in China performed brain-straining feats including memorizing 26 decks of cards.

Jonas von Essen, 23, who won his second consecutive title during the Dec. 10-14 event in Haikou, defeated German rival Simon Reinhard in mind-bending events including memorizing the order of 26 decks of cards in one hour.

"It was absolutely incredibly exciting until the very end. I managed to reach my absolute highest level and beat the points record. In this way the victory is even greater," von Essen told the Skaraborgs Allehanda newspaper.

Von Essen's performance helped propel the Swedish team to the top of the event's team rankings. Coach Idriz Zogaj called the accomplishment a "victory without equal."

Von Essen told The Local in 2012 he trained his memory for four hours each day to boost his memorization skills.

"People always ask me when I realized I had a good memory, but I tell them that I never did. It's just a question of training. My memory was just like anyone else's," he said.

Pokmon league - December 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The battle moved quickly as the players drew cards from their decks, powered up their monsters, and unleashed attacks.

Tim Skalland, the adult leader of the group of Pokmon enthusiasts, and 13-year-old Nic Ashland were engaged in a friendly contest. Skalland was using a deck that relied on a special attack of a weasel-like Pokmon called a Weavile, and Nic was playing a deck centered around a frog-like variety of the fictional monsters called Poliwags.

Skallands deck let him do a lot of damage, but he nearly ran out of cards which causes a loss in the game before he beat Nic.

The battle took place Sunday at the normal weekly meeting of the Corvallis Pokmon League at the Corvallis Elks Lodge. The group plays a card game version of the Japanese video game about humans training and putting pet monsters called Pokmon into battles.

According to Skalland, the crowd of around 10 was half the size of an average Sunday for the group, which has met in various locations in Corvallis since at least 2005. Most of the players are under 14, but there are a few adults, like Skalland, who play.

On Saturday the group hosted a city championship event that drew more than 50 players, some from as far away as Portland and Medford. They also four times a year host events where people can buy and play with new sets of cards before they are released to the general public.

Pokmon is a huge franchise. Theres kids and adults now that love it because it has been around so long, said Skalland, who is working on a doctorate in statistics at Oregon State University.

Skalland said the card game has remained popular because it is part of a franchise that includes video games and animated shows, but it is also popular because it is meant for kids and so is cheaper than other competitive card games.

Skalland said the game is fun and teaches everything from strategy and probability to critical thinking and good sportsmanship.

The Pokmon community is one of the best communities, he said. Thats one of the cool things about the game.

MIDDLEBURY After having decorated the Middlebury Community House for the holidays for many years, this year the Middlebury Garden Club decorated the Ilsley Library with the thought that more people would get to enjoy the decorations.

The Better Middlebury Partnership donated the two beautiful wreaths hung on the two large pillars in front of the library. Doug Sinclair of the Sinclair Family Tree Farm donated an enormous tree, which is decorated in red and gold with the theme The Holidays Take Flight.
