1 Dead, Hundreds Stranded in Greek Ferry Disaster - December 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Italian and Greek military and coast guard rescue crews battled gale-force winds and massive waves Sunday as they struggled to rescue hundreds of people trapped on a burning ferry adrift between Italy and Albania. At least one person died and two were injured.

The Greek Merchant Marine Ministry said 173 of the 478 people on the ferry, sailing from the Greek port of Patras to Ancona in Italy, had been evacuated by late Sunday night. Most were airlifted by helicopter to other merchant vessels sailing nearby.

"It will be a very difficult night. A night in which we hope we will be able to rescue all on board," Greek Merchant Marine Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis said in Athens.

He said 10 merchant ships were in the area assisting rescue efforts, and that those who had already taken on dozens of passengers from the stricken ferry would remain in the area until the operation was over. Only then would it be determined where they would go, Varvitsiotis said.

The fire broke out before dawn Sunday on a car deck of the Italian-flagged Norman Atlantic, carrying 422 passengers and 56 crew members. Passengers huddled on the vessel's upper decks, pelted by rain and hail, passengers told Greek media by phone.

Italy and Greece sent navy and coast guard vessels and helicopters to the extensive rescue operation, while nearby merchant ships lined up to form a barrier to protect the ferry from towering waves. As darkness fell, Italian Defense Minister Roberta Pinotti said rescue operations would continue through the night.

The Italian Coast Guard, which was coordinating the rescue operation, said those flames visible from the outside of the ship had been extinguished by about 8:30 pm (1930 GMT), about 16 hours after the blaze began. But the ferry was still enveloped in dense smoke, which the Coast Guard probably said was being fueled by some hotspots inside the ship.

Varvitsiotis described the efforts as "one of the most complex search and rescue operations we have dealt with in recent years."

An Italian Air Force helicopter pilot said smoke was invading the helicopter cabin, making rescue even more challenging.

"With the wind, smoke entered into the helicopter cabin, acrid smoke," Maj. Antonio Laneve told Italian state TV. Some of those they were trying to rescue were very frightened of being hoisted up by helicopter given the adverse weather, he said.

Italy: 1 dead, 1 injured in Greek ferry disaster - December 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

ATHENS, Greece (AP) Italian and Greek military and coast guard rescue crews battled gale-force winds and massive waves Sunday as they struggled to rescue hundreds of people trapped on a burning ferry adrift between Italy and Albania. At least one person died and two were injured.

The Italian Defense Ministry said 165 of the 478 people on the ferry had been evacuated by Sunday evening, more than 14 hours after the fire erupted.

The fire broke out before dawn Sunday on a car deck of the Italian-flagged Norman Atlantic, traveling from the western Greek port of Patras to the Italian port of Ancona on the Adriatic, with 422 passengers and 56 crew members on board.

Italy and Greece sent navy and coast guard vessels and helicopters, while nearby merchant ships lined up to form a barrier to protect the ferry from towering waves and facilitate rescue. As darkness fell, Italian Defense Minister Roberta Pinotti said rescue operations would continue through the night.

Varvitsiotis described the efforts as "one of the most complex search and rescue operations we have dealt with in recent years."

Most of those rescued were transported to other nearby ships, but nine were taken to the Italian town of Lecce. Of those, three children and a pregnant woman were being treated for hypothermia in Lecce hospital. Dr. Raffaele Montinaro said the children were in "excellent" condition, and emergency room doctor, Antonio Palumbo, said the mother's condition was also good.

The Italian Navy said the man who died and one injured person were transported by helicopter to the southern Italian city of Brindisi. It was unclear how the death or injury occurred, but the Greek Coast Guard said the pair were found in a lifeboat rescue chute.

The second injury was to a member of the Italian military involved in the rescue operation, Coast Guard Admiral Giovanni Pettorino said.

One Dead, Hundreds Stranded in Greek Ferry Disaster - December 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Athens: A fire erupted on a ferry carrying 478 people from Greece to Italy today, leaving one person dead and trapping hundreds on top decks as gale-force winds and choppy seas hampered evacuation.

The Italian Navy said that the victim and an injured person were transported by helicopter to the southern Italian city of Brindisi this evening. Greek and Italian rescue helicopters and vessels struggled to reach the crippled ferry, battered by 90 kilometer per hour (55 mph) winds that pushed it toward the Albanian coast.

Nearby merchant ships lined up to form a barrier to protect the ferry from towering waves and facilitate rescue. As darkness fell, Italian Defense Minister Roberta Pinotti said rescue operations would continue throughout the night.

The fire broke out on the car deck of the Italian-flagged Norman Atlantic, traveling from the western Greek port of Patras to the Italian port of Ancona on the Adriatic, with 422 passengers and 56 crew members on board. The ship was stricken about 42 nautical miles (48 miles, 78 kilometers) northwest of the Greek island of Corfu.

Some 11 hours after pre-dawn blaze erupted as passengers slept, only 149 people had been rescued from the ferry, and the blaze was still burning, the Greek Merchant Marine Ministry said. Heavy gray smoke enveloped the top decks as dusk approached, while tugboats sprayed water in a battle to extinguish the flames.

Nine of the rescued were flown to the southern Italian city of Lecce and the rest taken to nearby ships, said Greek Merchant Marine spokesman Nikos Lagadianos.

Passengers described scenes of terror and chaos. "They called first on women and children to be evacuated from the ship," Vassiliki Tavrizelou, who was rescued along with her 2-year-old daughter, said.

She recalled the ship alarm going off and seeing fire from her cabin. "Then we heard explosions," she said. It was not immediately clear what the explosions were, and the cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Passenger Giorgos Stiliaras told Greek Mega TV that passengers were having trouble breathing with all the smoke. "We are outside, we are very cold, the ship is full of smoke," he said by telephone. "The boat is still burning, the floors are boiling." He recalled "the smell of burning plastic" waking people up.

The ship, which was run by a Greek ferry company, was packed with holidaymakers and truck drivers making the popular transport run between Greece and Italy. Of those on board, 234 passengers and 34 crew are Greek, said Lagadianos. Other passengers are from Turkey, Albania, Italy and several other countries, including Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and France. Many of the crew included Italians.

Carols add to the rhythm of Christmas - December 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Even as pomp and gaiety marked Christmas celebrations, Jingle Bells have added to the spirit of the holy festival for over a week now across the coast. And this Christmas cheer is destined to continue for another week until the setting in of the New Year.

While night masses on Wednesday heralded the arrival of the festival, shops and houses across the city were decked up with star-shaped lamp shades and other materials even as churches and other Christian institutions glittered with illumination.

Christmas carols could be heard in every neighbourhood in the evenings. Troupes of boys and girls dressed in red and white, accompanied by none other than Santa Claus, went around the town spreading the message of the birth of Jesus.

Jingle Bells; O Holy Night and Silent night were some of the popular carols sung by the youngsters. The touring troupes, which set out with the onset of dusk, moved from one house to another till about 10 p.m. ushering in the joy of Christmas among the faithful.

Most Christian households encouraged these troupes by giving donations even as Santa Claus pampered children with gifts. The collections were pooled in the respective churches and were distributed to the poor, said Ronald Fernandes, a writer. However, there was no compulsion that one has to make donations to the carol troupe, he added.

On Thursday, teams mounted on three open trucks toured the city from Kulshekar singing carols as part of a programme organised by the United Christian Association. Every church had at least one troupe and some more than one, in the jurisdiction of Roman Catholic Diocese of Mangalore which has 114 churches, said Fr. William Menezes, public relations officer of the diocese. The troupes predominantly consisted of college students and young professionals. The carol singing would continue till the end of the year, Fr. Menezes added.

Carol singing reportedly dates back to the 13th century (AD 1223) when St. Francis of Assisi in Italy, known as the Saint of the poor, started the practice, he said. Thereafter the practice underwent many changes, including the lyrics, the language (from Latin to English) and such.

City-based mathematician and researcher Michael Lobo had in 2012 brought out A Thousand pages of Songs and Popular Music: A Historical and Thematic Analysis, which takes readers through the history of carols dating back to medieval times.

TS to showcase Bonalu at R-Day parade - December 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The decks are cleared for Telangana, the youngest State in the Indian Republic, to showcase Bonalu in the form of a tableau at the Republic Day parade in New Delhi on January 26. The last time an Andhra Pradesh tableau was seen at the parade was about seven years ago with Bathukamma as the theme.

An artist with about three decades of experience, M.V. Ramana Reddy, has been bestowed the distinction of designing the tableau. He has been invited to present his design at New Delhi on January 3, 2015 before the 13-member committee. When asked to how he zeroed in on the subject, Mr. Reddy said Bonalu was topical for more than one reason and hence the proposal was sent to the Ministry for Defence.

The Bonalu tableau would have two Potharajus and seven others on the tableau, including musicians and those who would be in a sigam (trance). Over a dozen others would probably be dancing before the tableau, he said. Potharaju according to tradition is considered a protector of the weaker sections and particularly of women.

Considering the increasing instances of atrocities against women, I thought it would be appropriate. I have tried to showcase the true culture and tradition of Telangana on the tableau and I hope it is approved, he said. The live performers before the tableau would include musicians playing the punga, dappu, pagadam, thasha and a sorcerer who cast spells on people.

Mr. Reddy said Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had as early as on October 15 written to Defence Minister Arun Jaitley, who was handling the portfolio before Manohar Parrikar, urging the Ministry to permit the 29 State of India to present its cultural tableau. The artist said that others who had put in their efforts included Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya and MPs Kavita and Jitender Reddy.
