NTPC has set in motion work to conduct environmental impact assessment for 4x1000 MW Rs.20,000-crore Pudimadaka supercritical power project coming up near here.
The company breathed easy with expert appraisal committee recently clearing the terms of reference for conducting environmental studies.
Earlier, the EAC of the ministry raised serious objections over location of project site in the vicinity of a creek, salt pans and falling in tsunami and flood-prone area and asked it to submit a revised layout plan.
Land acquisition
The company has already acquired 700 acres and is expecting to take possession of remaining 500 acres from the APIIC shortly. The TDP government allotted 1200 acres on a fast-track mode for the project, which was hanging fire for a long time due to lack of response from the previous government.
The project is on the right track and we will go ahead with work as per original schedule, NTPC Group General Manager and in-charge of Pudimadaka project P.S. Radhakrishnan told The Hindu . He said Vimta Labs of Hyderabad would conduct EIA.
The study is expected to be completed by May. Work on conducting other studies for the project is also in progress.
The project is located around 50 km from Visakhapatnam and in close vicinity of Simhadri Super Thermal Power Project, Parawada. Simhadri is also contemplating seeking 400 acres from the government to set up a supercritical unit.
Pudimadaka project will have high efficiency and low emissions due to sourcing of coal from abroad. The company will import 13.7 million tonne of coal for the project. The company has already issued global tenders for appointment of consultants and to supply coal.
After bifurcation, NTPC announced to take up construction of 4000 MW Greenfield power plant in Telangana. The first phase of the project to commission 1600 MW will be executed at Ramagundam.

Orlando-based Aquatic Design & Engineering is the creative designer for the water slides on what will become the world's largest cruise ship, the Harmony of the Seas.
Josh Martin, president of ADE, said in an interview that designing the giant new slides was a significant job for the firm.
"These are the first real water slides on a Royal Caribbean ship. The goal was to make this a part of the ship's design, to really blend it with the style of the ship," Martin said.
The 16-deck ship is under construction in France. It's a sister ship, but larger, to the Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas. The ship is expected to carry 5,000 guests in 2,700-plus rooms. It's set to debut in 2016.
ADE has designed water features for theme parks and resorts including Disney, and fountains around the world including for the sprawling presidential palace in Abu Dhabi.
The cruise industry has jumped into the slide business with both feet, Martin said. They are also seeking more land-based resort destinations for cruisers. He said a project such as the Royal Caribbean ship runs around $1.5 to $2 million.
ADE has an exclusive contract with Royal Caribbean for slide design. The firm had done concept work for the cruise line before, but Royal hadn't ever taken the plunge on ship slides.
Martin, 31, took over as president of the firm two years ago, from his father Ken Martin, who founded the company in 1987. ADE employs 14 people in downtown Orlando and has small offices in Dallas and Dubai.

The decks have been cleared for re-promulgation of the contentious Land Acquisition Ordinance with the Rajya Sabhas Budget Session being prorogued on Saturday.
A statement by the Rajya Sabha Secretariat said President Pranab Mukherjee had prorogued the 234th session of the Rajya Sabha, which means cutting short the Budget Session of the Upper House which had gone into recess from March 20 and would have met again on April 20.
The session was to conclude on May 8 but with the Rajya Sabha getting prorogued, the session has ended for the House.
The Cabinet can now recommend to the President reissuance of the land ordinance, which is due to lapse on April 5. The Bill on land acquisition was passed by the Lok Sabha during the first half of the Budget Session with some amendments but was blocked by the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, where the government falls short of numbers.

Notes and tidbits from around the NCAA Tournament on Friday:
NOTRE DAME UP AGAINST 50 SHADES OF BLUE
Don't expect Notre Dame to be shaken by Kentucky's Big Blue.
Actually, the color seems to suit the Fighting Irish rather well.
Notre Dame fans will be badly outnumbered on Saturday night inside Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland when the Irish face the top-seeded Wildcats, who are followed around the country each March by their devoted fans college basketball's version of Deadheads. It's nothing new to Notre Dame, which had to travel to Greensboro, North Carolina for the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament and faced Duke and North Carolina on consecutive nights.
That could give anyone the blues, but Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said the experience toughened his team:
"To go through Duke and North Carolina on Friday and Saturday night, and the atmosphere will be the same because it was all Duke blue and Carolina blue in Greensboro, and I know it will be whatever that shade of blue is out here tomorrow. I think it really has helped us, I think it's really prepared us for this atmosphere."
"And I loved in Greensboro how we just absorbed it and played fearlessly in it and we're going to have to do that tomorrow against a great team."
