The Cheyenne River Youth Projects Wo Otuhan Wi, or Moon of Giving Away Presents, finally came to an end this past Friday, Jan. 15. Over the last several weeks, the nonprofit youth organizations small staff just 10 people sorted, wrapped, and safely delivered thousands of gifts through curbside distributions, bringing Santa Claus to more than 265 families on the remote Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation.
Christmas 2020 is officially done, said Julie Garreau, CRYPs executive director. We delivered gifts for hundreds of children here on Cheyenne River, making sure that each one received four gifts from his or her unique Dear Santa letter, as well as warm winter clothing. And due to the pandemic, we did it without any long-term or community volunteers for the first time in our 32-year history.
Im humbled and honored to work with such a remarkable, committed group of people here at CRYP, she continued. They faced hard work, long hours, delays, and deeply challenging circumstances, yet they never wavered in their determination to bring holiday joy to our community.
Delivering that joy to Cheyenne River families was more important than ever in 2020. Not only are parents and caregivers dealing with lost income, quarantines, and sickness, their children are suffering from the loss of school, recreational and cultural activities, and gatherings with loved ones.
Our kids have lost so much since the pandemic erupted last March, said Dawn E. LeBeau, CRYPs deputy director. They couldnt lose us too, and we knew they definitely couldnt lose Santa Claus. We had to find a way to save Christmas.
That effort began early in the fall. The youth project created a new Family Services system that would allow families to submit their applications and their childrens Dear Santa letters entirely online. Next, its tech team came up with a plan to make those letters available to donors through the website.
We knew that employees at many of our partner organizations were working remotely, LeBeau explained. They wouldnt be able to distribute physical letters in their traditional work spaces, so we gave them a user-friendly online option for letters, as well as an Amazon wish list.
Not only could donors adopt letters from CRYPs online letter store, they also could shop online and ship the packages directly to Eagle Butte. As a result, many families gifts arrived at CRYP through couriers and the U.S. Postal Service this year.
CRYP did welcome its annual toy truck from Friends of Lakota Youth in St. Louis, as well as the annual toy truck from Colorado, which brought gifts from Fairview High School in Boulder and Lennar Custom Homes in the Denver metro area.
Other supporters included the American Indian College Fund; International Dream Achievers at Haven Middle School in Evanston, Illinois; a Leeds School of Business student group at CU-Boulder; Partnership with Native Americans; Pascack Valley High School in Hillsdale, New Jersey; Patterson Earnhart Real Bird & Wilson LLP in Louisville, Colorado, and Washington, D.C.; the Rapid City Woodworkers Association; the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, the Spirit of Sovereignty Foundation, and Square.
The need is so great everywhere right now, words cannot express how deeply grateful we are that you chose us, Garreau said. Thanks to you, nearly 900 children experienced the magic of dreams coming true this year.

AVENTURA, Fla., Jan. 18, 2021 /PRNewswire/ --Pea Architecture & Engineering Corporation (PAE https://paecorporation.com/) announced that founder and President Manuel Pea would be traveling to Dubai to help facilitate a series of major upcoming project developments for the company. PAE is a boutique architectural firm known for designs that exemplify both excellence and elegance in their style and execution.Led by the young but ambitious designer, PAE plans to introduce the company's architectural vision of simple luxury paired with energy efficient utility to the thriving architectural wonderland of Dubai.
"Beauty and luxury, merged with simplicity and functionality that's a signature design aesthetic for us," said Pea. "But what exactly does that mean? Well, it can a mean a lot of different approaches and theories. But some of our clients express a desire to live as nearly off-the-grid as they can, or they wish to lower their energy and carbon footprints in other significant ways. And sometimes they're hesitant to ask for these designs because there's a lingering notion out there that energy-efficient can't be beautiful. And that's just not true. Art and design are absolutely linked; beauty can be part of any design. An architect's job is to first envision the completed project whether it's an addition, a brand-new home, or an entire office complex and then find a way to get to the end goal in a way that incorporates both the client's desires, and a sense of artistic style. Dubai is a great place to see this in action all the time because the city is very welcoming to new architectural design approaches."
PAE: Completed Projects
PAE has already finished multiple successful projects in the Florida region, including a medical office in Miramar; commercial warehouse renovations, condominiums, and a car wash in North Miami; Oxford Courts in North Miami; Plaza Maria Condominium in Miami; and landscaping and residential homes in Miami Beach. A new series of online videos will be taking a tiny home on a 16-city Canadian tour in a project that will spread the wordabout the scaled-down housing option and end with a giveaway of the custom-built unit.
Kenton Zerbin, an Edmontonian who teaches tiny house workshops, isthe producer of The Tiny House Master Planproject, which is getting help fromateam of NAIT students as well as from business sponsorships.
The premise of the series?Build a tiny home that doubles as a mobile entertainment centreand then take it on the road.
Edmonton will be the tour's first stop.
Entering the giveaway is as simple as filling out a form on the website and subscribing to the project's YouTubechannel.
"I love the idea of providing a moral uplift for people in these times," Zerbin said in an interview with CBC's Radio Active on Monday.
Radio Active8:10A tiny home you could win
The planned mobile unit includes a pop-up stage, sound system and FM transmitter that could be used for a drive-in movie theatre or other entertainment.
"In the iterations of the design, it very quickly became apparent that we got to make more than just a state-of-the-art house, we got to use it for this community cause," Zerbin said.
"So people could come to have a concert event that could literally pop up anywhere."
Plans are being made so people can attend from their car in line, to ensure adherence toany possible COVID-19 restrictions.
Zerbin has been teaching about sustainable living for about eight years and saidhe has seen interest grow.
Edmonton, he said, is one of the most tiny house-friendly cities in Canada. In 2019, city council approved zoning bylaw changes aimed at allowing for further development of tiny homes.
Zerbin had intended to take his work to the United States this year but COVID-19 put a halt to those plans.
He started teaching online and then got into videography, which he realized was a great way to reach a lot of people.
"That's the story [that] led up to the show," he said. "Because it was like, 'Well, how do I reach people for free and still teach them and excite them?'"
Zerbin submitted the proposed project as an internship option for NAIT.
"When that kind of popped-up on the list that was my absolute first one," said Amanda Keys, a NAITstudent pursuing a bachelor of technology management. She is working as the project'sgeneral manager and hopes to one day own a tiny house of her own.
Besides managing the capstone project, Keys also helps seek out companies for sponsorship. So far, the project has met about 50 per cent of its funding goals.
"It's been really interesting because it's a lot more involved," Keys said. "When you think about, 'Oh yeah, you just build the house on the little trailer. It's so easy.'
"It's a lot more complicated."
The tiny house is still in the design phase but Zerbin hopes to get the show on the road by April 9.
"Unless things get really seriously locked down, I think we're going to be OK," he said.

Sgt. Bradley Thomas served in the U.S. Marines. He was injured by a roadside bomb in 2011.
FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. A decorated military veteran is getting recognition for his eight years of service.
U.S. Marine Sergeant Bradley Thomas is getting a brand new home for free as a thank you by Operation Finally Home and Lennar Homes.
Like many veterans, Thomas struggled after the military dealing with his physical and mental injuries. This home is his new safe place for himself and his family.
Thomas was inspired by his father to join the Marines in 2007.
I always loved the action behind my dad," Thomas said. "He was always a man of action. [...] I saw what it did for him and I said I want to be a part of that.
Thomas wanted to make it his career. Four years in, he was injured by a roadside bomb.
I was in a truck. Big boom," Thomas said. "Truck went up truck went down. I dont remember much about it honestly.
He humbly describes the moment that changed his life. Thomas medically retired four years later unable to do what he used to. He came home struggling with more than his physical injuries.
I had a lot of emotional stuff going on, just you know years and years and years and years of buried anger," Thomas said.
When he returned home, he struggled with PTSD. He was also going through a divorce and figuring out how to take care of himself and his family financially now.
Thomas ended up getting a job helping other veterans. He now works at Wounded Warrior Project.
He got married. He started saving money hoping to provide a home for his family one day thinking it would take years.
In November, Operation Finally Home broke the news to Thomas. He and his family would receive a custom home in Fernandina Beach at the start of the new year.
Just a day before move-in day, it marked 10 years since the bombing. Thomas said he went sky diving on the anniversary and looked down and saw his new home in the distance.
Thomas says this gift will change his life allowing him more time and money to put into the community and other veterans who need his guidance. He says this will also allow him to focus on his nonprofit which also helps veterans.
Every detail is in place and everything in here has been donated just so this veteran and his family can have a home.
Its just amazing to see the weight that is lifted off these veterans and his familys shoulders knowing that the community partners like Lennar and others that come together to provide these homes to lift that financial burden off of them," said Rusty Carroll, Executive Director of Operation Finally Home.
In one room of the house hangs an American flag. It is framed with signatures all around it from people who were involved in all aspects of this project thanking Thomas for his service.
Thomas walked in saying "holy cow", but this stopped him in his tracks. He took a second with his wife to take it in.
January 11, 2021 marked 10 years to the day since the bombing that changed his life. He medically retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 2015, but today he is finally home.

State information: Outside of outlining the phases for who gets the vaccine, Gov. Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Health have not released much framework for the distribution of shots preventing the coronavirus. Local leaders expressed mixed feelings about how the rollout has been handled. But Seth Richardson reports there is a common thread: Information is coming at the last second, leaving little time to switch direction. Is Ohio ready to ramp up shots?
Vaccine targeting: As daunting as it might be in a state of more than 11 million people, especially with the slow start to coronavirus vaccinations, targeting the most vulnerable for the first vaccines could make a big difference before the end of the winter. Rich Exner breaks down the groups of Ohioans in line.
This Week in the CLE: Gov. Mike DeWine said he does not regret supporting Donald Trump for president. Were talking about his support, even after a mob breached the U.S. Capitol, on This Week in the CLE, cleveland.coms daily half-hour news podcast.

The number of Ohioans have died with the coronavirus rose by 28, to 9,627, Jane Morice reports. On Friday, Ohio added 9,535 new coronavirus cases and 82 deaths, Laura Hancock reports. On Saturday, there were 8,374 new coronavirus cases and 55 deaths, Kaylee Remington reports.
Lorain vaccination: Lorain County is the second Northeast Ohio health board to lay out vaccination plans. The county health department is creating pods, or designated locations where residents will go to be vaccinated, allowing up to 1,000 people per day per pod to be vaccinated. Julie Washington reports the health department can run up to eight pods per day, but the number open at any given time will fluctuate depending on the amount of vaccine available.

Cuyahoga vaccinations: The Cuyahoga County Board of Health commissioner said it could be well into February before coronavirus vaccines are administered to all willing members of the 1A group, reports Courtney Astolfi. Approximately 20% of the countys workforce is in the health-care field and eligible for early vaccinations.
Cuyahoga Board of Health: The Cuyahoga County Board of Health on Friday reported 3,423 new coronavirus cases among suburban residents for the week ending Jan. 2, bringing the total number of suburban cases to 50,450, Courtney Astolfi reports.
Vaccination questions: Gov. Mike DeWine finally provided some answers this week about how the next group of Ohioans would get the coronavirus vaccine. But many questions about specifics remain. Laura Hancock sent a dozen of them to spokespeople for the Ohio Department of Health and DeWine, with hopes of getting answers.
Free masks: The state of Ohio has distributed about 38 million free face masks since the coronavirus crisis began last spring and plans to hand out millions more, Jeremy Pelzer reports. The Ohio Department of Aging mailed 10 million masks last month to 2.1 million Ohioans age 65 and older, and nearly 5 million masks have been handed out as part of the Ohio Department of Healths More Than A Mask campaign, which is targeted at minorities and vulnerable communities.
Racial disparities: Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish announced Friday that he has issued four executive orders intended to address racial and gender disparities in county contracting procedure. Courtney Astolfi reports the orders align with contracting-related recommendations from the Citizens Advisory Council on Equity, which was created as part of the countys 2020 declaration of racism as a public health crisis.
Cormorants: Once endangered in the Great Lakes region, double-crested cormorants dark, long-necked waterfowl often spotted in Lake Eries western basin are facing a new threat of potential extermination authorized by the federal government. Robin Goist reports on the decades-long history of cormorants angering Ohio fishermen, since the birds can eat up to a pound of fish per day and are routinely blamed for affecting the states aquaculture production.

FBI investigation: FBI agents late Friday raided the home of a former Cleveland Metropolitan School District employee, a day after she submitted a conspiracy theory-referencing resignation letter to the district. Emily Bamforth, Eric Heisig and Sabrina Eaton report that authorities posted a picture that raised questions as to whether she participated in a riot at the U.S. Capitol led by supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump.
Hough homes: A Westlake developer plans to build 100 houses over the next several years in Hough, a majority-Black Cleveland neighborhood officials are working to transform. Eric Heisig reports that Cleveland Custom Homes plans to buy lots from the Cuyahoga Land Bank, five at a time, to build 1,200 square-foot ranches and 1,600-foot two-story structures that start at $250,000.

Calls for resignation: Sen. Sherrod Brown accused Republican Sens. Josh Hawley of Missouri and Ted Cruz of Texas of abetting insurrection, calling for their resignation and if they do not step down their expulsion from the U.S. Senate, Marc Bona reports.
Officer-involved shooting: An 18-year-old Cleveland man shot and killed by an East Cleveland police officer Tuesday morning was driving his girlfriend to work in a car a friend allowed him to drive as a favor, his stepmother tells Kaylee Remington. The familys insistence that Vincent Belmonte drove a borrowed car runs counter to East Cleveland polices initial report that says the officers tried to stop a car they say was stolen.
Hang onto your face masks, even after you've been vaccinated for COVID-19, health experts say.Dave Killen
Mask up: Do I need to keep wearing a mask if Ive received the coronavirus vaccine? Julie Washington reports the short answer is yes, individuals who have been immunized need to keep wearing masks because its still possible for them to get COVID-19 and transmit it to others.
Coping through COVID: Licensed independent social worker Larissa Malcolm felt ashamed that she had gotten COVID-19. She felt like she had done something wrong and feared that she had infected the entire West Side of Cleveland. So Malcolm sought counseling at MetroHealth Systems, where a therapist asked, Would you feel guilty if you caught a cold? Julie Washington reports that Malcolm kept her spirits up by opening a private social-work practice, moderating a Facebook group for COVID-19 survivors, creating a website offering advice and donating plasma so her antibodies can be used to help others with the illness.
Susan Allan Block: Republican Gov. On Saturday, Brooklands Bar in Akron; B Stone Bar & Grill and Cebars Euclid Tavern, and Republix Cocktail and Grill, all in Euclid; and My Corner Bar in Parma Heights were cited, Jane Morice reports.
Historic elm: An elm tree which towered above historic row homes on Prospect Avenue has been reduced to a stump. Anne Nickoloff reports the tree was at least 150 years old, estimated to be planted in 1868 as one of the earliest street-tree plantings in Cleveland along Euclid Avenue and Prospect.
