Are dome homes the next big thing? - February 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Dome Incorporated

Look at most any home in America and they all have at least one thing in common: Four walls.

There is, however, a growing sector of housing that bucks this most basic structural element -- the dome home.

The dome's shape and inherent structural integrity make it both stronger and more energy-efficient than a typical family home. Domes can withstand powerful winds and strong earthquakes. Concrete domes have been known to survive flying debris as big as cars and direct hits from bombs.

"They are practically indestructible," said Johnny Delirious, spokesman for Monolithic Dome Institute in Texas, a company that has been building the domes for nearly 50 years. "Anyone who wants one wants it for the protection first."

Concrete monolithic domes are the safest of the dome homes. Built out of concrete over an air form, these homes can look as simple as a bubble over the earth or as complex as a luxury mansion with a curved roof.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency rates them as having "near-absolute protection" from F5 tornadoes and Category 5 hurricanes. They have withstood wildfires in Arizona and California and survived direct hits from Hurricane Katrina and tornadoes in Oklahoma and Texas.

Geodesic domes, made by assembling triangular building materials, are similarly protective but with so many seams don't have the exact same strength as their cement counterparts. They are just as energy-efficient, offering owners savings of around 50 percent, said Blair Wolfram, general manager of Dome Incorporated in Minnesota, a company that builds domes.

"What attracted me to the geodesic dome is that it is simply the most energy-efficient home you can build," he said.

Wolfram, like Monolithic owner David South, was inspired by prolific architect Buckminster Fuller, who first popularized the geodesic dome in the 1940s and 1950s and inspired the most well-known geo-dome, the Spaceship Earth dome at Disney World. Advocates of Buckminster's idea went on to build their own dome homes before selling the concept to the public.

100-year-old carriage house in Fort Langley to be restored - February 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The last remaining building of a Fort Langley estate built in 1912 will be given new life, with a restoration that will include the replacement of doors and windows and repairs to its weathered exterior.

What stands as the last remaining structure of the extensive Charles Edward Hope estate, built in 1912, is now getting a facelift.

The Hope Carriage House, located in the heart of Fort Langley behind the famous Community Hall, has withstood more than 100 years of rain, snow, sleet, and hail, and it shows.

Through a partnership between the property owners with both Lanstone Homes, a custom home builder heading up the nearby McBride Station project, and the Township of Langley, which has awarded this project a grant through the Heritage Building Incentive Program, the aim of the restoration is to retain the structural soundness of the carriage house while improving its weathered exterior and maintaining the classic heritage look.

A large part of the restoration will be replacing the windows and doors.

With the current doors and windows showing severe signs of weathering and decay, Centra will install beautifully handcrafted Dutch-style wooden doors and traditional custom wooden windows that have been built to reflect the historic look of the originals.

All work will be done in accordance with the Canadian Standards for restoring heritage buildings, and will be completed in time for Heritage Week, which runs the week of Feb. 17.

Over the years, the owners of the property have shown an unwavering commitment to preserving and shepherding this character building as a significant piece of Fort Langleys history.

Much of the interior remains intact, with cattle restraints still hanging near a curved grain silo wall, and open frame walls that reveal the buildings original timber construction.

Vendors happy with Anderson expo, 2014 outlook - February 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

ANDERSON Vendors at this years Upstates Home and Garden Expo are saying 2014 could be a pretty good year for the construction business.

They say the thousands of people visiting this years expo at the Civic Center of Anderson appear to be serious about fixing up bathrooms, replacing windows and building homes.

Weve had great traffic, said Nonnie Wright, showroom manager for Pro Source Supply of Anderson. This show is great for people showing interest and not just walking through looking for freebies.

Wright said the expo lets consumers see Pro Sources plumbing fixtures up-close.

We get more bang for the buck out of this show than any other kind of advertising we do, she said. People like to see and feel and touch it, to get a sample of what youve got.

Dave Smith, who runs Mobius Construction in Townville, is a first-timer at the expo. He is hoping to come away with at least 10 leads this weekend from people wanting new bathrooms, kitchens or custom-built homes. He has been happy with the foot traffic past his booth, he said. No sales as of Saturday afternoon, but hes had plenty of people come by to discuss cabinets and countertops.

Im very happy with the Home Builders Association (Home Builders Association of Anderson, the group that presents the show). Theyre doing a great job here, Smith said.

Hutch Design is finding a lot of folks interested in custom ornamental metal work, such as handrails and gates.

Its been pretty good yesterday and today, said owner Chad Hutchins. Ive probably got 12 leads so far, plus referrals from other vendors. This could be our best year since the downturn (in 2008).

Those business-to-business referrals are as important as making direct contacts with consumers, if not more so.

With more than 800 affiliated state and local home builders associations and more than 140,000 members across the country, NAHB represents the interests of the nation's housing professionals through advocacy, education and research.

Kelly is president of Leon N. "To further advance the housing recovery, NAHB will work with the Administration and with Republican and Democratic congressional leaders to promote pro-housing policies that will spur job and economic growth, promote homeownership and provide rental housing opportunities," said Kelly.

Also moving up on the association's leadership ladder during NAHB's Las Vegas board meeting was Tom Woods, a Blue Springs, Mo.-based home builder with more than 40 years of experience in the home building industry. Marni Jameson: Homeowners want the best of both worlds - February 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

IT'S THE CURLY-hair-straight-hair dilemma all over. You have one, and want the other. Those who live in new homes covet the character and charm of old ones. Those living in old homes long for the modern amenities new ones offer.

Having lived in houses ranging in age from so new the glue's not dry to older than the light bulb, I get the paradox.

I want soul and all-new appliances with a homeowner's warranty. I want mature landscape and a big gourmet kitchen with a hot-spot island. I want patina that comes with history and surround sound. I want a claw-foot bathtub with jets. I want deep wooden window sills with handsome panes and uber-tight energy efficiency. I want a great front porch and an attached garage.

As usual, I want it all. Apparently, so do a lot of us, and today's home builders are on to us.

A recent Wall Street Journal article reported on the trend of residential designers offering up a new old house: "a sanely proportioned residence that's historically accurate on the outside, but conceived for the needs of modern Americans on the inside."

Think Snow White's cottage with walk-in closets. Huzzah!

"Several residential architects today, and even some production home builders, are building good-looking new houses that look old," said Amy Albert, editor of Custom Home magazine.

One of those firms is Saussy Burbank of North Carolina.

"We've tried to capture the look of older homes, and put that on a modern floor plan," said partner Jim Burbank.

"So it's like beauty with benefits," I said.
