BROOKLIN One Hancock County deputy will be more prepared for incidents involving mentally ill people thanks to a donation for training from friends of the late Chris Angell.
Brooklin resident Angell, who had schizophrenia, had succumbed to injuries he suffered while trying to commit suicide in April 2012.
Friends from Hunterdon County, N.J., where Angell had worked as a tennis professional, have donated $830.
Angells parents, Chip and Gail, who own The Brooklin Inn, have donated the funds to the Hancock County Sheriffs Department to send a deputy for Crisis Intervention Training (CIT).
The CIT training is a 20-year-old program that originated in Memphis, Tenn., said Jenna Mehnert, executive director of the Maine chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. CIT is supported by the U.S. Department of Justice.
NAMI provides the 40-hour training for free with funding provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
However, the expense of hiring an officer to replace the officer while hes away during the weeklong training can be an issue for smaller, rural departments. Thats why the Angell donation has been so valuable.

True-Line nabs top awards -

After failing to win in several categories that it was a finalist in at the Canadian Home Builders Association awards gala on Saturday evening, True-Line Homes was called to the podium when it mattered the most.
The Central Alberta branch of the CHBA named True-Line its Builder of the Year among large-volume builders, and also its Renovator of the Year.
The Red Deer company also won Awards of Excellence for Best New Multi-Family Project (Townhouse or Duplex Style) Over $225,000 and Best Renovation Project Between $50,000 and $99,999.
True-Line president Phil Neufeld was joined on stage by more than a dozen staff members for each of the best of the year award presentations.
Im glad theyre all here and can celebrate with us, he said, crediting True-Lines personnel, as well as its trades and suppliers, for the companys success.
Winning the other major award was Platinum Homes, which claimed Builder of the Year honours in the small-volume category. Platinum also received Awards of Excellence for Best New Home Between $260,000 and $299,999, and Best New Home Between $525,000 and $599,999.
Terry Loewen, a partner in the business, credited his staff, trades, suppliers and customers for the award. Like Neufeld, he made a point of calling a large number of Platinum staff to the stage to share in the moment. The resulting congestion led to the large volume Builder of the Year trophy, which had not yet been presented, being bumped off a table and breaking.
Sorry large volume, you dont have a trophy, joked Loewen.
The other big winners on Saturday included Sorrento Custom Homes, which received Awards of Excellence for Best New Home Up To $224,999, Best New Home Between $375,000 and $449,999, and Best New Estate Home Over $1 million. Falcon Homes Ltd. also claimed three Awards of Excellence: Best New Home Between $225,000 and $259,999, Best New Home Between $450,000 and $524,999, and Excellence in Interior Design for work by Stephanie Fehr, and Gina and Kevin Pardy.
Krest Homes won two Awards of Excellence, one for Best New Home Between $300,000 and $374,999 and the other for Best New Multi-Family Home (Townhouse or Duplex Style) Under $224,999.

Showcase of Homes ends hiatus -

SAVOY For the first time in five years, the Showcase of Homes will return this summer, giving area residents a chance to tour seven newly built houses.
The event, coordinated by the Home Builders Association of East Central Illinois, will take place June 20-29 in Savoy's Prairie Meadows subdivision.
"Judging from the early response from the community, it's going to be an outstanding comeback for the Showcase of Homes," said Nicole Thompson of McGuire Custom Homes, the association's president.
Seven builders are taking part: Kennedy Builders, Armstrong Construction, Pettyjohn Builders, Signature Homes, Ironwood Homes, Cramer Homes and Miller Construction.
The featured homes will be in the 200 block of Denton Drive on the east side of Prairie Meadows Park. Six of the lots are along the lake, while one is on the opposite side of Denton.
To enter the subdivision, drive east on Old Church Road from U.S. 45 and turn right on Denton.
Visitors will be able to view the interior and exterior of each house, meet the builders and vote for the Builder's Choice award. Hours for the showcase will be 3 to 7 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekends.
Starting June 20, tickets to the showcase will be available at the gate. The price is $5 for adults, $3 for youth ages 6 to 11 years old and no charge for children under 6.
The Home Builders Association of East Central Illinois has about 200 members. The association serves a region that includes Champaign, Vermilion, Ford, Douglas, Piatt, Coles and Edgar counties.

A version of the California Room in a home in Issaquah, Wash., where protection from rain is critical to using the contiguous space. NanaWall
Bad times teach us valuable lessons. Yet, the American housing industry prefers to create larger tract homes as soon as times improve, forgetting the difficulty of unloading massive houses.
It all circles back to a peculiar American greed, a deep devotion to the belief that more is always desirable. Instead of a focus on quality, we tend to revere bigness. Nevertheless, some Americans will be forced by economics to evaluate their homes from a different perspective.
During the building bust, some national companies quickly got on board with the discipline of building better small homes. General reluctance to innovate otherwise can be accredited to industry characteristics. Stubborn regional presidents in the largest national builder companies often operate autonomously. Many of the brightest innovations produced by small builders arent effectively transmitted coast to coast. When pioneering concepts are used in custom homes, rarely are they shared broadly due to privacy concerns and pride.
In The New New Home by Boyce Thompson (The Taunton Press, 2013), we learn about one of the early success stories of the housing recession. The Irvine Ranch of Southern California has 798 acres in holdings, and the Irvine Company has historically been a breeding ground for originality in tract homes. Donald Bren, the billionaire owner of the Ranch, hired market researchers to ask people what might induce them to buy during the period when new developments had nearly halted.
Thompson reports the findings: Decent pricing, more storage space, great rooms as opposed to formal living spaces, and functional porches that work with indoor spaces. Bren developed new plans that came with increased storage space, a mudroom, a great room that flowed sensibly into a functional kitchen and the celebrated California room that offered undercover patio living.
Combined with other revolutionary ideas, and marketing the homes at 35 percent to 40 percent below boom market peak prices, Bren sold 20 per month right through the recession blues.
U.S. builders have experimented by eliminating anywhere from 160 to 500 square feet from plans, and successful builders dont just shrink layouts. Instead, they analyze what kind of space is desired in their markets and eliminate spaces that were included because of habitual gluttony.
A 2011 National American Home Builders (NAHB) survey found that the American living room is likely to vanish within just a couple of years! One discovery of the past decade is that each generation looks for different function: Generation B baby boomers are downsizing and interested in less maintenance. Yet, they are still attracted to special amenities.
Generation X, busy raising children, is immersed in expanding space. Generation Y is challenged to buy starter homes and may live in nontraditional situations for years, sharing with parents, grandparents, siblings or another relative under one roof.

Parade Of Homes In Austin -

Updated: Wednesday, May 7 2014, 06:52 PM CDT
The 59th annual Parade of Homes Austin comes to a close on Sunday, April 11, so grab your tickets now! The two week event is presented by the Home Builders Association of Greater Austin and is held at Willie Nelson's Tierra Vista community in Spicewood, Texas.
It showcases the latest trends in home designs, technology and layouts.
Five multimillion dollar homes and four builders showcase their own custom construction, landscaping, and interior designs. The "Best in Show" home features a huge walk-in "California Closets" closet, motion-censor lighting, a breathtaking backyard view of the Texas Hill Country and a digital shower.
"The shower is really awesome. It's fully digital. So there's no handle to reach in and turn on in the morning, it actually has a remote control, you can preset it like almost like a car seat where you choose what your temperature is," said Heather Harkovich, owner of Heather Scott Home & Design.
Tickets are $20. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Sunday which is also Mother's Day.
