Mike Bleech: Custom wooden boats made in Erie County - September 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

It was the late 1950s when Ray Bimber took me to Tidioute to buy a boat from a boat builders shop.

To me, the man looked very old, but then I was very young.

The shop with boats in progress was fascinating. Best of all was the boat Ray bought.

The new wooden boat had a rocker bottom which helped to get it off Allegheny River rocks.

The bow was pointed and the sides arched in so the transom was narrower than the beam, which helped it slip through the water. All of this made it an ideal row boat for fishing on the river.

Our plan was to take the boat up-river to Warren, which is a pretty good distance. Ray had borrowed a small outboard motor so we didn't have to row all of the way.

Before we got through the second eddy, the motor quit running. We tried rowing and pulling, but that didn't work out. The boat went the rest of the way in the back of a pick-up truck.

We kept that boat chained to a tree in Warren, and it was stolen after about a year.

When Ray built a house on the bank of the river, he bought another boat just like it.

It was through these two boats that I gained a deep appreciation for wooden boats made by a serious boat craftsman.

Home tour: Great for ideas - September 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Judy Wiley has been going to theBuilders Association of South Central Kentuckys Parade of Homes for about seven years, and she has been blown away each time.

We love it, she said. Were big decorators.

She loves to decorate so much that she scribbles different details she likes on the back of the appropriate business cards and clips them to pages in the Parade of Homes magazine.

This is a good way to get ideas for your own home, she said. You cant remember every detail.

On Thursday evening, she walked through the home on 138 Stone Mill Court in the Stone Bluff subdivision. The home, built by Kirby Builders, won Best in Show Over 3,000 Square Feet, Best Master Bath and Best Curb Appeal.

This is a gorgeous family house, Wiley said.

The home has a variety of features, including four bedrooms, 31/2 baths,hand-scraped hickory hardwood floors,a two-car garage and ascreened porch off the living room with speakers in the ceiling and a view of the backyard and outdoor living space. The outdoor living space has an outdoor fireplace, a grill, a smoker, a refrigerator, a sink and a side burner.

Its a really rustic, traditional house. Its an energy-efficient house, said Kyle Kirby, owner of Kirby Builders. It makes my job easier when your homeowners work with you andwhen you surround yourself with creative people in the business.Im real happy and proud of it.

Leslie Campbell, her husband, Michael, and their two young daughters plan to move in after the Parade of Homes. They also are pleased with the house.

My husband wanted to live in the country, and I wanted to live in a subdivision. This is our compromise, she said.

Bush also suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.

The new house was made possible by HEB, Operation Finally Home and the Builders Association of Corpus Christ. The mission of Operation Finally Home is to provide custom-built, mortgage-free homes to American's military heroes who have sacrificed so much to defend our freedom and values.

Parade offers builders chance to showcase homes - September 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Though this years Helena Building Industry Association Parade of Homes is showcasing five homes, down from nine last year, the builders are saying the market has recovered from the recession.

I think things are really doing well in Montana right now, Elaine Marcille, executive officer with the HBIA, said.

The homes in the parade range from houses for first-time buyers to dream homes, from values of $275,000 to $1 million,Marcillesaid.

There might only be five houses on the parade, but they are five really cool houses, she said.

This is the 22nd year Helena has hosted the Parade of Homes. The parade, which starts Friday and runs through Sunday, is an opportunity for community members to tour homes constructed by area builders and see their work.

Its a great opportunity for people to get to know a builder, Brian Beeson, president of the Helena Building Industry Association, said.

For Chris Purvis of Sierra Custom Homes, that opportunity to talk with community members translates into new customers every year.

Its a great time for people to get out and see whats new on the market and visit face to face with home builders, Purvis said.

He added that although hes heard national predictions of a potential bubble in the housing market, there is still a growing demand in Montana. Sierra, he said, is working on building 15 homes right now.

At this time were seeing a real growth spurt, Purvis said.

New Article Released, Custom Homes Can Make Sense for Extended Families Living Together - September 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Tampa, FL (PRWEB) September 11, 2014

A new article focuses on the growth of multi-generational families living together and how families are adjusting how they look at housing.

Pew Research Center reported that in 2012, 57 million Americans live in households with at least two adult generations. This number is double from what it was in 1980.

The housing market itself is responding, with home builders offering custom plans, double master suite home plans and other home modifications to suit the needs of these extended families.

The article additionally illustrates the differences in needs for multi-generational housing and compares renovating an existing home with new construction.

Extended families range from adult children moving back home after a life event to two families of the same generation deciding living together because it makes sense to them for financial or safety reasons. With assisted living costs on the rise, it often makes sense to move aging parents into the home and set up supportive care. Adult children may move in after a divorce or may move in for a shorter time as they look for employment after graduating from school. There are a growing number of reasons families choose to live with each other, and home builders and renovation companies must be not only up to the task, but understand the nuances of needs of different family situations.
