The 1 " edge is laminated and equivalent to getting a 3CM counter top. Traditional Designs produces it by placing laminated piece on the " edge for a thicker appearance. With a longer production period, the 1 " edge styles are more expensive than their " counterparts.

A local Milwaukee granite installation company is getting more attention lately for work on several high-end projects. House of Stone, Inc. recently worked on the south-end renovation of Lambeau Field, which included granite, Cambria, and Silestone quartz countertop installation.

House of Stone has been working with Lambeau Field, home to Wisconsins beloved Green Bay Packers, for over a decade. The new section of the field needed new countertops for many areas, including concessions, bars, luxury suites, bathrooms, and lounge areas. House of Stone fabricated and installed the quartz and granite countertops in a very tight construction schedule, in order for the field to be ready for preseason football in August. We are really proud that we were able to accomplish the fabrication and installation of this work within the allotted time frame, said Korkut Colakoglu, House of Stone owner.

Riding on the success of the Lambeau Field project, House of Stone is currently working on the Potawatomi Hotel. They are bringing their expertise to the construction of the new hotel addition to the casino.

House of Stone Gave a New Look to Lambeau Field

I hate spending money for things I can make. Take cleaning products, for example. I know I can make specific cleaners for pennies that cost dollars at the store. Here are three handy recipes to help you get started saving all that money you used to spend on household cleaners.

Granite cleaner. Countertops made from granite, marble and stone are tricky to clean because these materials are porous and stain easily. You never want to use anything acidic, such as vinegar or lemon juice. This homemade granite cleaner will not stain and is not acidic.

Pour 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol into a 16-ounce spray bottle. Add three drops -- only three -- Dawn liquid dishwashing detergent, five to 10 drop essential oil (this is optional, but will add a nice fragrance) and enough water to fill the bottle. Apply the spray top and shake to mix. Use this to clean and shine your appliances as well.

This homemade solution costs about 25 cents for 16 ounces. Compare that to Granite Gold ($16.95 for 24 ounces) or Method Daily Granite ($7 for 12 ounces).

Stainless-steel cleaner. Start with a clean 16-ounce spray bottle. Pour in 1 1/3 cups white vinegar, five drops Dawn liquid dishwashing detergent and 2/3 cup water. Apply the spray top and shake to mix.

To use, spray on stainless-steel appliances, scrub with a cloth or sponge to clean, rinse well, then buff with a dry cloth to shine. Be sure to label this product clearly; you do not want to use it on granite, marble or stone countertops because it contains vinegar.

You can spend up to $10 for a 16-ounce bottle of Weiman or 3M cleaner for stainless-steel appliances -- or make it yourself for less than a buck.

Carpet shampoo solution. This is a cleaning solution to be used in your carpet-cleaning machine. Into the cleaner's reservoir, pour 1 cup Febreze, 1 cup liquid OxiClean Laundry Stain Remover and 1 cup white vinegar. Add hot water to the fill line.

I use this solution in my Hoover SteamVac for heavy-traffic spots. After I've cleaned the carpet thoroughly, I fill the Hoover with clear hot water and go over the carpet again to rinse.

This homemade solution should not leave residue on your carpet fibers -- I rinse my carpets because I'm especially paranoid about removing all residue -- and will not cost a fortune to shampoo the whole house. Carpet cleaning solutions can be expensive. A small bottle that cleans one or two rooms is $15 to $20. Making this recipe should cut that cost to $5 or less if you get the ingredients on sale.

FORT WAYNE Marian Clark and her husband, Robert Boyko, had a house in Monroeville.

But it was in such disrepair that a family friend was going to gut it, free of charge, and replace the appliances and countertops and fix it up.

To do so, though, the family of nine had to vacate. So they took their dogs and their cats and their seven children and they went to the Hallmark Inn, 3730 E. Washington Blvd.

Within weeks, that room was so trashed and so filthy, the couple ended up with 14 felony charges between them and their children removed by social services in January.

They drew attention to themselves when they called Neighborhood Code Enforcement to complain about the lack of heat in the motel room.

When code officers got there, they called the police after finding the children in deplorable conditions inside a urine-soaked room with food strewn about. Some of the children were zip-tied to chairs and car seats.

None was dressed for the cold and snow, according to court documents.

The children were eating food from the floor, which was also being used as a bathroom by two cats and a dog.

Some of the children had red feet and hands from having been outside in an unheated van with temperatures dropping below 10 degrees. An infant girl was taken to a hospital and put in intensive care, suffering from hypothermia and jaundice.

On Thursday, the couple were in court to be sentenced on those charges. And while they faced no prospect of prison time, appearing in court in the presence of media and family members stressed them out to such an apparent degree they wanted their hearing continued.
