Solid surface veneers will give you the same durability and resistance to stains as your standard solid surface countertop, but with a decrease in price. This is due to its limited variety of patterns and colors, as well as its need for an underlayment.

Butcher block countertops, made from hardwoods such as red or white oak, offer an alternative look and appeal. Wood never goes out of style and will always give you a warm, natural look. Although scratches can easily be sanded out from wood, the over all maintenance must be kept up.

Stainless steel, on the other hand, is very easy to clean and is the perfect choice for serious cooks. Steel offers a stylish modern look to your kitchen. Although steel counter tops may be very appealing, durable and easy to maintain, they are also very expensive, heavy and difficult to install. In general, this is not a do-it-yourself install. Look for reliable kitchen contractors in your area for help with this project.

If you are looking to keep cost low, it is best to stick with a simple durable tile countertop. Glazed ceramic and porcelain tile will not stain, but keep in mind that you cannot use ceramic material as a cutting board! Porcelain is more expensive but also more durable. All countertops look good in the showroom, but keeping them pristine requires durable materials or high maintenance. We stained, scratched, sliced, scorched, and pummeled leading brands of 11 materials and found long-lasting, attractive countertops no matter how muchor littleyou want to spend.

You can't get a more classic look than natural stone. But only granite aced most of our tests. Marble was at the bottom of our Ratings (available to subscribers) and limestone didn't do much better. Quartza man-made combination of stone, color, and resinedged out granite because of slightly better overall performance. And you don't need to reseal it.

Laminate, another kitchen countertop staple, excelled at resisting stains, heat, and impacts. Plus it's inexpensive. Choose nature-inspired colors or crisp whites for a classic touch. While we found differences among materials, there were few brand distinctions, so our Ratings (available to subscribers) are by material. We also found:

We haven't found a material that's completely green. The Richlite countertops we tested are made of paper from certified, managed forests, but the resin is petroleum-based. Check "green" credentials by how much recycled content a material contains and whether it's made of renewable sources. Another option: Scout home salvage yards for stone or wood countertops that can be refinished or recut to suit your space.

The sixth annual Bayou Home Show and Cannatas Food Festival will be held March 7-8 at Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center, 346 Civic Center.

Southeastern Louisiana Home Builders Association, MaxHome and Cannatas Market are sponsoring the festival.

The show will feature 120 booths with products and services for the home, including kitchens, bathrooms, siding, solar products and countertops.

Tony DEramo with JAAS Productions, the company planning the event, said the show allows shoppers to compare product prices to find whats best for their homes.

Cannatas Food Festival will have free food samples, tastings, coupons and recipes from over 40 vendors.

Jerry DEramo with JAAS Productions said Cannatas joined the festival four years ago.

Youre not preoccupied with getting your groceries done and getting out of the store. And, you can actually talk with the people about what the products are all about, he said.

Between 6,000 and 8,000 attendees are expected.

Its really a great opportunity to have a local grocery chain participate with us for a lot of reasons. Several of those are that it is a great way to thank their customer base for being so loyal to them, he said.
