WM Adds Waste Transport Firm - February 29, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Waste Management Inc.’s (NYSE:WM - News) subsidiary Waste Management of West Seneca has acquired Reliable Environmental Transport (“RET”), one of the most respected full-service hazardous/non-hazardous waste transportation firms in the Tri-State area. The acquisition will provide Waste Management a leading edge in servicing customer needs.

Bridgeport, West Virginia based Reliable Environmental Transport caters to key industries such as Gas & Oil, Utility Companies, Pulp and Paper, Waste Treatment Plans, Steel Manufacturing, Railroad Companies, Convenience Stores and Environmental Engineering & Architectural Firms. It services and holds waste transportation permits in various states of the North East. These states include, but are not limited to West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, and Virginia.

The president of RET, Jonathan Marks, will now be director of gas and hazardous waste services for West Management’s Upstate New York, Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia market.

Waste Management offers single-source environmental management services to oil and natural gas producers that include transportation, storage, recycling, treatment and disposal processes. The acquisition is a strategic fit for the company.

Waste Management’s adjusted EPS in fiscal 2011 was $2.14 compared with $2.09 in the previous year, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.11 and at the low end of the company’s guided range of $2.14–$2.18.  Revenues increased 7% to $13.4 billion, ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $13.3 billion.

Waste Management expects 2012 adjusted EPS to lie between $2.22 and $2.30. The Zacks Consensus Estimate stands at $2.27. Internal revenue growth from yield on the collection and disposal business is expected to be in the range of 1.0% to 1.5%. Yield in the second half is expected to improve from the first half. Internal revenue growth from volume is expected to be flat to slightly positive.

Waste Management’s ability to cut costs will help in maintaining profits despite weak volumes. Lower trending recycling prices, lower volumes, commodity headwinds and continued margin deterioration nonetheless remain causes of concern. Backed by its strong cash flow, the company has increased its dividend for eight consecutive years.

The acquisition of Oakleaf Global Holdings in 2011 will provide North American customers with unprecedented access to waste and recycling solutions by pairing the largest network of directly owned hauling, recycling, diversion and disposal assets with the largest managed third-party network.

Waste Management is the largest provider of comprehensive waste management services in North America. The company provides collection, transfer, recycling and resource recovery, as well as disposal services to nearly 20 million residential, commercial, industrial and municipal customers. It competes with Republic Services, Inc. (NYSE:RSG - News) and Casella Waste Systems Inc. (NasdaqGS:CWST - News). Waste Management currently maintains a Zacks #3 Rank (Hold) on its stock for the short term.

Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation Announces Energizing Taliesin WestTM Initiative - February 28, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, in conjunction with energy efficiency consultant Big Green Zero, today announced the launch of Energizing Taliesin West™, a pioneering initiative integrating sustainable energy at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Ariz. To kick off the initiative, the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation has partnered with First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR - News), one of the world's leading solar companies, to install a 250 kW (AC) solar photovoltaic (PV) array at Taliesin West.

Energizing Taliesin West™ is a groundbreaking effort to transform the entire National Historic Landmark Taliesin West site into a “net zero” energy customer, producing as much energy as it consumes annually, while maintaining the historic and architectural integrity of the site. The comprehensive endeavor will focus on the twin goals of maximizing Taliesin West’s energy efficiency (through improved lighting, insulation, climate controls and other techniques) while also generating clean renewable energy on-site.

Arizona-based First Solar is a premier provider of complete solar PV systems, and has developed and installed some of the largest and most noteworthy solar projects in the world. Approximately 4,000 of the company’s sleek, black solar modules will generate clean electricity for Taliesin West, helping it achieve the goal of becoming a net-zero energy consumer. As part of its commitment to the local communities where it operates, First Solar, with help from several key suppliers, is donating the complete custom-designed ground-mounted solar PV system.

The panels will not be visible from anywhere in the historic core of Taliesin West, nor will tour guests be able to see the panels from any location during their entire tour experience – maintaining the historic integrity of Frank Lloyd Wright’s desert home and studio. However, intentionally, guests will be able to see the impressive solar array from the road before they arrive at Taliesin West to take their tour – celebrating the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation’s commitment to sustainable energy. Every year, more than 100,000 tourists come to Scottsdale to experience Taliesin West, which also houses the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this partnership with Big Green Zero and First Solar,” said Sean Malone, CEO of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. “This is an extraordinary opportunity; the goal of making a world-famous National Historic Landmark site entirely self-sustaining is unprecedented. And we’re going to make it happen. The endeavor will have a broad and deep impact for sustainability efforts throughout America and across the globe. And, importantly, the initiative is entirely consistent with the values of Taliesin West: innovation, an evolving site, embracing new technology, celebrating nature and strategic use of resources.”

“Frank Lloyd Wright is synonymous with innovation in architecture and design, and we share the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation’s passion to forward his legacy – by integrating sustainable energy into his work,” said Larry Whittet, First Solar project manager for the Taliesin West solar project. “Taliesin West is a global architectural landmark that has captivated the imagination of visitors for 75 years, and we are proud to be part of this historic undertaking,”

The Energizing Taliesin West program was initiated after a recent energy assessment by Big Green Zero. The assessment indicated that Taliesin West’s energy bills could be reduced by as much as 51 percent through simple conservation methods. In addition, the property has potential to achieve a “Big Green Zero” by producing as much renewable energy as it uses each year.

“The Foundation is proud to announce First Solar as a partner in achieving our sustainability goals,” said Robert Roth, Ph.D., CEO of Big Green Zero. “As a local company focused on harnessing Arizona’s most abundant natural energy source – the sun – First Solar will provide Taliesin West with state-of-the-art solar panels in order to reach the property’s goal of producing as much energy as it consumes.”

“This year marks the 75th anniversary of Taliesin West,” adds Malone, “a perfect time to focus on the future. Energizing Taliesin West does just that – it celebrates the future of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, and our future as a society.”

Finland firm looking at joint ventures for ship design, operation software - February 28, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Bangalore, Feb. 26:

The Finland-based ship design software company Napa (Naval Architectural PAckage) is looking for joint ventures and business partnerships from Indian engineering companies to provide basic services in ship design and ship operation software in the country.

The Finnish company writes software solutions for shipyards and ship operators for design and operation of ships and works on safety and energy efficiency of vessels.

Talking to Business Line recently, Mr Juha Heikinheimo, President of the Napa group, observed that most shipyards in India were present in the latter part of the process and “we can provide initial assistance in a joint venture.”

    Three stages

Ship design and ship building is done in three stages - conceptual, basic and detailed – and according to Mr Heikinheimo, most Indian shipyards work on the detailed design and operations segment while work in the conceptual and basic levels are outsourced.

“There is a growing marine industry in India and we have a lot of potential customers.

According to Mr Heikinheimo, the fuel consumption of ships would reduce by about eight per cent on using Napa's solutions and several companies were now beginning to realise the benefits of this and, hence, sees a huge opportunities in the Indian market as well for their solutions.

Napa has a presence in India — the country serves Indian entities such as Mazagaon Dockyard, Bharti Shipyards and L&T in designing and building naval and commercial vessels and also has an establishment here from where it provides ship design services to its global customers.

    To increase workforce

Mr Heinkinheimo said that Napa plans to increase its workforce in India in a move to develop India as its global platform to provide its ship design solutions. It intends to hire from top notch naval architecture universities here, he said.

Napa's largest customer base is Korea, followed by Japan and China, and with India providing a good geographical location, “it won't be long distances to neighbouring countries so we have plans to develop India as global base to other commercial areas,” Mr Heikinheimo said.

Cloud security: How to make the switch - February 27, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    COMMENT

Traditional security measures are inadequate in virtualised environments. So you just have to do things differently when moving to the cloud, says Rik Ferguson.

Despite the obvious commercial and technological benefits of the cloud, enterprise adoption is still in its infancy.

In survey after survey, the primary barrier at an executive level to the adoption of cloud services is security. Executives are concerned that provisioning data and servers from a third-party datacentre will mean compromising their present level of security, their control and their access to logging and audit information.

So what is really powering the cloud? Datacentre virtualisation, virtual desktop infrastructure, shared storage, and IaaS, PaaS and SaaS have changed the architectural game, possibly more than any other innovation in the past 15 years.

None of the traditional security concerns disappears — although they often have to be addressed in new ways — but new security challenges arise, many of them at an architectural level, which do not have a counterpart in their physical forerunner.

Firewalls at cloud providers must operate as lowest-common-denominator security devices, configured for the least secure customer, but perhaps not for you. Cables, switches, bandwidth, virtualisation platforms and SANs must all be considered a shared resource and as such, untrusted.

Many aspects of traditional infrastructure are collapsed into the hypervisor or the abstraction layer of the virtualised SAN and much security technology and security provisioning becomes an unacceptable bottleneck and business disabler, crowbarred into an unforgiving infrastructure. This situation inevitably undermines both confidence and compliance of potential customers.

Colocation of virtual instances and data with that of strangers, competitors and possibly even malicious actors — we have already seen criminal activity being hosted in Amazon's EC2 cloud, for example — brings a host of new challenges.

How do you maintain confidence that a dormant virtual machine is free of infection or that it will not be grossly out of date and at risk when you bring it online? How do you manage traffic between virtual machines from a security standpoint?

Traffic that travels from machine to machine on the same hypervisor does not touch your physical network and as such, traditional security techniques and technologies will be blind to any risk.

How can you deal with emerging threats such as malware capable of breaking out of a virtual machine to infect the host operating system? What mitigation exists against insider attacks, and how can you ensure that...

St. Louis Companies Look to Color Art for the Latest in Sustainable Architectural Walls - February 24, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Color Art is now offering DIRTT Environmental Solutions to provide flexible and environmentally friendly modular offices walls to the St. Louis area.

St. Louis, Missouri (PRWEB) February 24, 2012

The new partnership between Color Art and DIRTT Environmental Solutions is not only a merger of products and services, but of vision and mission. DIRTT’s custom solutions of architectural walls are built on the principles of reduce and reuse. As the largest manufacturer of modular office walls in North America based on sales, DIRTT is positioned as a market and thought leader in the new design of sustainable solutions for office interiors.

“Color Art is committed to its customers and environment,” said Gary Mindel, president of Color Art Office Interiors. “With nearly one-eighth of the man-made CO2 in the atmosphere coming from the creation of building materials like cement, glass, concrete and drywall, Color Art assumes an environmental responsibility to offer eco-friendly alternatives such as DIRTT modular office wall solutions.”

Drywall is harmful in landfills because of the hydrogen-sulfide gas that is released when drywall is wet. Unlike drywall, DIRTT’s walls are made of medium density fibreboard, or MDF, that can be repurposed and maintained for the life of the building and even beyond.

Using several recyclable materials such as glass, wood and aluminum DIRTT’s architectural walls can be designed to any company’s specifications. With the ability to add custom elements such as writing boards and even wine coolers built right into the wall, these are not traditional painted, standing walls. DIRTT movable office walls also give companies flexibility during restructuring or relocation. The ability to reuse products can save customers money down the road because they can be reconfigured as needs change.

“These custom projects are ideal for any business because of the combination of environmental sustainability with business strategy. Faster move-in, agile power, data built into walls and the ability to move to suit changes in the organization, all without sending waste to the landfill are a few reasons why we are proud to present this new offering to our customers,” said Mindel.

In addition to DIRTT’s architectural solutions, Color Art is excited to work with DIRTT’s groundbreaking ICE software, one of the main contributors to DIRTT’s success. This software eliminates human error and facilitates real-time communication among all project stakeholders, regardless of location.

As the largest office interiors dealer in the Midwest, Color Art carries an extensive product offering with environmental benefits. The company features DIRTT’s Center Mounted Tiled Walls, Combination Walls, and Face Mounted Tiled Walls in its online catalog of architectural walls. Finelite Shapes Efficient Lighting Design at SHI International in New Jersey - February 23, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    UNION CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Finelite, a leader in high performance commercial building lighting systems, today announced that it has completed a full-building lighting design retrofit at SHI International headquarters in Franklin Township, N.J. One of the largest retrofits in the region, this project showcases cutting edge lighting technology developed by Finelite through its industry research partnerships to reduce energy use and improve the visual environment.

Recognized for its history of product innovation, Finelite was selected to work with full-service architectural firm Cornerstone Architectural Group to design and integrate a custom blend of energy efficient task and ambient lighting for the 440,000 square-foot office space. Finelite collaborated with the building owners and designers from the beginning to optimize energy savings through lighting design. At one-half a Watt per square foot, the lighting solution delivers significant energy and cost savings over the industry standard while improving light quality in the workplace. The sleek, modern new lighting system integrates LED task lighting with pendant fixtures spaced 18 feet apart. As a result, the new system is anticipated to save $500,000 on energy costs over the next 10 years.

“Our goal is to enable architects, designers and building owners to take charge of lighting – the largest source of building energy use – by engaging them early on in the construction and retrofit process,” said Terry Clark, Finelite chairman and founder. “This prioritizes lighting at the design and budget stage and helps them to plan realistically for specific lighting needs. Our work with Cornerstone and SHI International is a solid example of how this can harmoniously achieve massive savings with an overall improvement to light quality.”

Congruent to its approach at SHI International, Finelite has a history of embarking on key public research partnerships that drive the evolution of industry standards while bringing innovations to market. Most notably, a 2007 collaboration with the California Energy Commission’s (CEC) Public Interest Energy Research (PIER) program discovered an average 55% energy savings can be achieved simply by combining task lighting systems with complementary low ambient overhead lighting. Finelite’s collaborations with PIER and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s (NYSERDA) led to best practices and new technologies for K-12 classrooms. Currently, Finelite is collaborating with the CEC to contribute to the state’s Title 24 commercial building lighting codes revisions that will take effect in 2014.

In a forward-looking move, the company recently announced the appointment of lighting controls industry veteran Jerry Mix as Finelite CEO. Bringing an extensive knowledge of lighting controls, Mr. Mix adds strength in leadership to drive energy efficient design for commercial lighting.

“The future of lighting depends on how the system is inherently designed,” said Mr. Mix. “Finelite is driving the standards for these innovations to create solutions that optimize energy efficiency, smoothly integrate with leading controls, and deliver the best light quality on the market. I am looking forward to contributing to these advancements.”
