Council unveils grants to tackle vacant offices

    By Eoin English

    Wednesday, May 02, 2012

A new building grant and commercial rates waiver scheme has been unveiled in Cork City in a bid to tackle the problem of office vacancy.

The pilot project is targeted at the owners of protected structures and is designed to incentivise them to invest in their buildings and rent them out.

Successful applicants could get a grant of up to 15,000 for building works, and benefit from a 50% waiver in their rates in year one, with a sliding waiver scale applied for a further two years.

And if refurbishment is undertaken which requires planning permission, the owners will not have to pay development contributions.

City manager Tim Lucey said the initiative is the first of a series of measures his officials are working on in a bid to stimulate economic development in the city centre.

"There will be more. They are small steps but all with one thing in mind to try and create the right environment for jobs," he said.

Details of the 45,0000 scheme were unveiled this week.

Grants available to downtown New Iberia businesses - April 18, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

New Iberia, LA - Through the Louisiana Main Street program, New Iberia Main Street Program is soliciting Re-development Incentive Grant applications from downtown commercial building and/or business owners located in the New Iberia Downtown Commercial Historic District. The Louisiana Main Street program is able to offer two types of competitive grants - a $10,000 grant for major projects and a $2,500 grant for minor projects. Grants are available for either interior or exterior rehabilitation. Interior improvements are limited to exposing, restoring, replicating, or enhancing the original interior architectural features, or the installation of fire suppression systems.

Louisiana Main Street is part of the Lt. Governor's Office of Cultural Development and the Division of Historic Preservation. Applications received from the New Iberia Downtown Commercial Historic District building and/or business owners will compete statewide for funding with other Main Street communities. Over the years, New Iberia Main Street has received some $110-thousand dollars in re-development grant funds from the Louisiana Main Street program and generated nearly $40 million in private re-investment.

To be eligible for Re-development Incentive Grant funds, a building must be located within the New Iberia Downtown Commercial Historic District, be used for commercial purposes, and be at least 50 years old. In addition, the proposed work must be approved by the local Historic District Commission and the Louisiana Main Street office, while also conforming to the guidelines set forth by the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation. New Iberia Main Street Re-development Incentive grants are reimbursable matching grants. Grants are reviewed by an independent panel comprised of professionals working in historic preservation and related field.

Panelists are neither members of designated Louisiana Main Street communities nor employees of the Louisiana Main Street program or the Division of Historic Preservation. Panelists consider, among other things, the degree of immediate economic and/or visual impact the project brings to the Main Street district in order to maximize the return on tax dollars reinvested in community revitalization projects. Louisiana Main Street assists historic commercial districts in their revitalization efforts.

Funded by the state, the program operates under the umbrella of the National Main Street Center, an arm of the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Washington, DC. The state program provides revitalization technical assistance in the areas of economic development, exterior, interior and streetscape design, promotion and organization. The services are available at no charge to individual merchants and commercial property owners located within the boundaries of the thirty-four designated Main Street districts statewide. TerraLUX Announces Line Voltage Linear LED Module with LEDSense® Contribution to Fraunhofer CSE’s Building Technology … - April 17, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    LONGMONT, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

TerraLUX today announced its participation and contribution of its Line Voltage Linear LED Module with LEDSense to the Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE) Building Technology Showcase, a first-of-its-kind research and demonstration building for sustainable technologies in the City of Bostons Innovation District. TerraLUX is one of 35+ partners contributing a combined total of $2.7 million in advanced building energy technologies and services for the new living laboratory.

We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to be involved in the Fraunhofer showcase as it gives us the ability to demonstrate the incredible advancements that we have made with LED technology, said Mark Verheyen. Our Line Voltage Linear Module is revolutionizing the world of energy-efficient lighting renovations and retrofits.

Unlike most LED lighting solutions in the past, the TerraLUX Line Voltage Linear Module requires no separate LED Driver or extra hardware. All you need to install the unit is three wire nuts and a screwdriver. And, retrofitting many fixtures with the Line Voltage Linear Module will not change its UL listing making post-installation inspections a breeze. Additionally, the Line Voltage Linear Module is designed with a Smart Thermal Design and patented LEDSense Thermal Foldback circuitry that will lower power if the LEDs are running too hot. The Line Voltage Linear Module is suited for indoor and outdoor installations in wall sconces, recessed step lights and wall lights, ceiling surface mounted fixtures, outdoor wall packs and any other sealed fixtures.

Fraunhofer CSE is performing a deep energy retrofit and renovation of the historic, 100-year-old building at 5 Channel Center in Boston to transform it into a research and demonstration facility for advanced building energy technologies. CSE researchers will evaluate the reliability and effectiveness of the technologies incorporated into the building, helping technology developers prove out their products with building-integrated and other applied research, and showcasing these technologies in a state-of-the-art exhibition and educational space open to the public. The building will be Fraunhofer CSEs new headquarters, housing its advanced research labs and staff.

As part of its vision for making the building a center of learning that promotes clean energy workforce development, Fraunhofer CSE also announced its commitment to partnering with numerous Massachusetts and regional institutions and businesses on workforce development initiatives once the new building is completed. Working with these partners and others, CSE will bring in student groups and workers entering the clean energy sector for technology demonstrations and training, seminars, and other events.

In addition to making the Building Technology Showcase the premier research and demonstration laboratory for clean energy technologies, we are committed to making the building a venue where everyonefrom seasoned architects and construction executives to students still deciding their future career pathscan visualize the performance and potential of the technologies incorporated into the building, said Nolan Browne, Managing Director of Fraunhofer CSE. Our goal is to present the information in innovative ways that engage visitors and create demand for these energy-saving systems and sustainable products in the market.

Fraunhofer CSE invites building energy product and system manufacturers and integrators to join those on the list of current industry partners. Please contact the Center with ideas for additional technologies to incorporate into the Building Technology Showcase.
