ORLANDO, Fla., June 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Want to recognize an environmentally conscious Florida builder or developer, one whose projects prove that responsible growth and environmental protection can co-exist? Then remind builders to enter to win Florida Realtorsannual Environmental Award, popularly known as the ENVY, before the July 6, 2012, deadline.

Florida Realtors introduced the ENVY Awards more than 20 years ago, but the issues of growth management and environmental preservation continue to concern all Floridians today. The award may be given in two categories: one for residential development and one for commercial development.
The 2010 ENVY winner for residential development was Oakland Park, a traditional neighborhood development between the historic towns of Oakland and Winter Garden in Central Florida. The community includes about 258 acres stretching from the shores of Lake Apopka to Oakland Avenue.
Judges cited Oakland Park for the care it has taken to preserve the area's natural elements, including the existing tree canopy and sensitive environmental areas. "The developer's restoration of the Lake Apopka shoreline, complete restoration of Lake Brim and incorporation of the West Orange Trail into its design are exceptional," said one judge.
It is now time to honor another environmentally responsible development. The 2012 ENVY Award winner will be announced during Florida Realtors annual Convention & Trade Expo, held Aug. 8-12, at the Marriott World Center in Orlando. Environmental and planning professionals will judge the contest, awarding a handcrafted Lucite trophy to the ENVY winners for residential and/or commercial development. In addition, the winners will be featured in statewide news coverage.
ELIGIBILITY: All Florida commercial developments are eligible. Also, all planned residential developments with a minimum of 30 residential units in Florida qualify. Residential developments must be currently available for marketing and must include a model home.
JUDGING CRITERIA: For each criteria category, applicants should explain how the project goes above and beyond current environmental preservation and/or building code minimal requirements. Please include photos, site plans and other documents that will help illustrate your points to the judges. Provide narrative that will clearly demonstrate and explain the development's environmental features, environmental or preservation activities and design aspects to help the judges better review your project. Explain what makes your project stand out from the rest what are you the most proud of? Why should your development receive the ENVY Award? These are the things the judges want to know.
Commercial: (1) Preservation of natural flora and fauna; (2) Architectural compatibility; (3) Design in scale and context with surrounding environment; (4) Open space and access/usability of surrounding environment; (5) Common area access and usefulness; (6) Streets, pedestrian and bicycle access; (7) drainage as a design feature; (8) Marketability; and (9) Tell us what makes your project stand out from the rest what are you the most proud of?
Residential: (1) Preservation of natural flora and fauna; a) highlight any restoration areas or efforts; b) include any corridors/buffer zones; c) highlight wetlands areas; (2) Landscaping/compatibility with surrounding environment; (3) Design in scale and context with surrounding environment; a) highlight and explain any specific "green" standards and/or certification standards endorsed by the project such as standards from the Florida Green Building Coalition, LEED-ND (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-Neighborhood Development) standards or National Home Builders green building standards; (4) Open space and access/usability of open space; a) highlight green space and unusual features; (5) Family recreation and common areas; a) highlight special areas; (6) Streets and safety features; (7) Drainage and stormwater design features; a) highlight any unique stormwater plans; (8) Marketability; and (9) Tell us what makes your project stand out from the rest what are you the most proud of?

Mozilla officially released Thunderbird 13 yesterday, a new version of the open source e-mail client. The update brings several new features, including support for personalized e-mail addresses and easier sharing of large files.
Since the release of Thunderbird 5 last year, Mozillas e-mail client has been on the same rapid, time-based release cycle as the Firefox Web browser. Aligning with Firefoxs schedule made it possible for Thunderbird to continue benefiting from improvements to the underlying Gecko rendering engine, which is shared between the applications.
The biggest change in Thunderbird 13 is a new feature that allows the user to register a new domain name during the setup process in order to obtain a personalized e-mail address. The feature is made available when the user is configuring an account in Thunderbird.
When selected, Thunderbird will prompt the user for their name or nickname and will then perform a domain search to find a suitable match. It will display available addresses, spanning unregistered domains that are available and addresses on generic domains that are already owned by the providers.
The service is backed by Hover and Gandi, which handle the domain registration and e-mail hosting. The Hover service, which offered by default to US users, costs $20 a year. When the user goes through with the setup process, Thunderbird will automatically configure itself to support the users new e-mail address on the custom domain name.
In addition to the personalized e-mail address feature, Thunderbird has also added improved support for sending large attachments. Mozilla has partnered with YouSendIt, a commercial file sharing service that works a bit like a file locker. Users can optionally configure a YouSendIt account in the Thunderbird preferences and use that service for attachments that are larger than a specified size. Mozilla says that support for additional file sharing mechanisms will be added in future versions.
The new features in Thunderbird 13 give commercial third-party services prominent positioning in the open source mail client. This seems like a pretty obvious attempt to monetize the applicationmuch like Mozillas lucrative search engine partnerships for Firefox. Thats not necessarily a bad thing, especially if it helps furnish the financial resources that are needed to continue improving the mail client.
Over the past few years, Thunderbird development has progressed too slowly, preventing the application from living up to its full potential. Mozilla simply hasnt continued to build on the great ideas and architectural improvements that are introduced in Thunderbird 3 back in 2009.
Impressive projects like the Gmail-inspired conversation layout are stuck in beta and seem to have stalled. More recent projects like the effort to add a built-in instant messaging client have been slow to land. An infusion of cash could help to remedy these issues and put Thunderbird back on the right path. Thunderbird 13 is available for download from the Mozilla website.

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Housing Authority of the County of Santa Clara (HACSC) will hold a grand re-opening of the Cypress Gardens senior citizen housing facility in San Jose, California, showcasing the agency's successful program of upgrading and revitalizing traditional Public Housing through creative public-private partnerships.Guests of honor for the gala event are Santa Clara County Supervisor Ken Yeager and San Jose City Councilmember Pete Constant. The press is cordially invited to attend on Thursday, June 7, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Cypress Gardens, 3555 Judro Way, San Jose, California 95117.
(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120604/SF18572)
Originally built in 1984, Cypress Gardens is one of HACSC's oldest affordable public housing facilities for senior citizens.Years of neglect and deferred maintenance, due to limited federal funding, had left Cypress Gardens in desperate need of rehabilitation.Faced with these financial realities, HACSC creatively partnered public and private parties to accomplish the task.
"Cypress Gardens proves that public-private partnerships are a win-win formula for serving the affordable housing needs of our seniors, disabled, and homeless residents of Santa Clara County," said Alex Sanchez, executive director of HACSC. "This is the kind of teamwork that can be achieved throughout the nation."
HACSC Solves a Stubborn Housing ProblemBuilt and funded under the federal government's Public Housing program for low-income renters in the 1980s and 1990s, 10 properties in Santa Clara, San Jose, Gilroy, and Campbell, California faced a steady downward trend in federal funding, maintenance and renovation.
But through a creative partnering of public and private parties, HACSC in the past three years has rehabilitated and upgraded 555 Public Housing units, preserving critical low income housing options in one the country's hottest rental markets.
To accomplish this, HACSC leveraged over $90 million in private funds from Low Income Housing Tax Credits, tax exempt bonds, and commercial loans. The total cost of the construction work was approximately $84 million, and addressed millions of dollars of deferred capital work that could not be financed from the Department of Housing and Urban Development's annual Capital Grant for Public Housing.Four different general contractors were hired to complete these projects, and the work has created over 400 jobs for construction workers, legal and architectural professionals, as well as city building inspectors.Without HACSC's efforts, the properties would have fallen into disrepair, and valuable units that provide services and housing to extremely low income tenants would have been lost.
More about the Rehabilitation of Cypress GardensCypress Gardens is comprised of 125 units for approximately 150 residents, mostly senior and some disabled citizens. The rehabilitation project, which began in November of 2010, included the repair of major interior, exterior, and common use areas.Among the improvements are: new outdoor siding, new windows, new paint, a new walkway, improved landscaping, new appliances, new floor coverings and fixtures, new common area kitchen appliances, a new multimedia center with a new computer, expanded laundry equipment, new air conditioning, and a new fire alarm system.
The project budget was approximately $7.6 million, the general contractor was Segue Construction, Inc. of Pleasanton, California, and construction lasted for approximately 13 months.
"The rehabilitation of Cypress Gardens added approximately 80 jobs to our local economy," said Vanessa Cooper, HACSC's director of real estate services."But more importantly, our unique teaming of public and private interests has resulted in a safer, more comfortable, and enhanced living environment for many of our most needy senior citizens."
