Jabalpur/Mumbai, Mar 22 (PTI):A cathedral premises and a Catholic school where people had gathered for a religious convention were vandalised allegedly by Hindu activists at Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, the second incident to come to light after yesterday's attack on a church in neighbouring Maharashtra, drawing outrage from the Christian community.
No arrests have been made so far in connection with the Jabalpur incident which took place on March 20 and the wee hours of March 21, when some members of the Christian community were allegedly assaulted and threatened by members of Bajrang Dal and Dharam Sena who attacked the school and a parsonage alleging that religious conversion had been taking place there.
There was also no breakthrough in the probe into the church attack in New Panvel area in Navi Mumbai though police were grilling some suspects.
The CCTV footage showed that the attack was carried out by two masked persons who were riding pillion on a motorcycle at around 1.30 AM yesterday when they hurled stones at the Saint George Catholic church located near a bridge in New Panvel.
There are no eyewitnesses to the incident and the scanning of CCTV footage has also not thrown up any substantial leads to identity the attackers, police said.
However, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the culprits will be nabbed soon.
In Jabalpur, police booked a leader of Dharma Sena and some others but church authorities questioned the "delay" in arresting the culprits.
"Dharma Sena leader Yogesh Agrawal and Raju Rai and a few others have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and efforts are on to track down and arrest them," Jabalpur Superintendent of Police HC Mishra told PTI today.
The church authorities alleged that the miscreants stormed into the Cathedral premises and a school housing a grotto with St Mary's idol.
They broke earthen pots and and shattered glass panes of windows of the parsonage, accusing Father Thankachan Jose of converting the Hindus to Christianity.

Years of restorations at The Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea are nearly finished, with the creation of a chapel in the Cluett Garden expected to be unveiled on Easter and other renovations to be complete by Christmas.
The landmarked church has been undergoing a $5 million renovation for almost three years, said longtime parishioner and junior warden Wendy Victor. The work has included a series of projects, such as clearing corrosion and waterproofing the facade and installing a generator. Most recently, the church began an upgrade to the east end of the 700-square-foot Cluett Garden to create an outdoor worship space called the Garden Chapel.
I walked out into the garden at one point and just thought this has to be a worship place, said the Rev. James Harlan. Now, its going to be a wonderful, prayerful space.
The church is paving the east end of the garden, adding drainage, re-doing the landscaping and building stone benches and a stone altar. The work will allow the garden to be used for services, weddings and other celebrations, Harlan said. They plan to have the space ready for a 6 a.m. service Easter Sunday.
Its absolutely magical, Victor said. Its dark when we start the service, and the only light is coming from torches we set up, but we watch the sun come up slowly over the morning service.
The outdoor sunrise service is a church tradition, Harlan said. The recent work means priests will use the stone altar, rather than the foldable tables of years past.
Its going to add a whole new experience as a sacred space, he said.
The $500,000 Garden Chapel update has been underway for more than three months. The other renovations also are almost finished, Victor said.
As long as we have the money, we should be done by Christmas, she said. And these renovations should last us from 40 to 45 years.
The facade work on the church includes cleaning out weather corrosion between the stonework, waterproofing the walls and painting over the stones to maintain the color. Workers also are installing a generator to preserve power for the pipe organ during storms.

CADILLAC Neighbors of the Wexford County jail project indicated they are resigned to its construction and hope to reduce its impact on their nearby Christian school.
On Wednesday, members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and parents from the Northview Seventh-day Adventist Schoolwere still opposed to the location of the new jail project but ultimately said they would not try to stop or delay the direction in which the county was clearly headed.
They also said the jail itself has never been a point of contention. Church members have been strongly opposed to its locationfor its proximity to the the school and church. The new jail will be built at1015 Lincoln St., north of M-55/Division Street and west of Crosby Road.
Seventh-day Adventist ChurchPastor Pat Milligan said it was obvious that the county was going to build the jail but asked the board of commissioners if it was possible for the county to consider building a fence around the school as added protection for students.
Although the board didn't address the request directly, several board members, including Les Houslerand chairman Gideon Mitchell, said it was definitely something the board would consider.
Parent Gunther Schwartz also spoke at the public hearing and said that he was still concerned about the jail's proximityto the school as both the students and inmates would basically be within shouting distance of each other.
During public comment at the regular meeting, Schwartz spoke again, relaying the message that there were still concerns, but the goal was not to impede progress of the construction of the new jail.
We have prayed about this and are leaving it in the Lords hands, Schwartz said.
The current 50-year-old jail has only 32 beds, while the number of inmates reaches 90 to 100 each month. An in-depth study concluded that the jail functions as a holding facility for inmates being shuttled to and from court dates, at significant expense to taxpayers of about $600,000 a year. The $12.5 million project includes a new 158-bed jail and administrative offices on a 10-acre site.

Luxury condos in the former St. Augustines Church in South Boston have hit the market, offering buyers an opportunity to live in new, modern units amid high Victorian Gothic architecture, with soaring ceilings and arched windows.
Twenty two- and three-bedroom condos are taking shape in the former Catholic church on Dorchester Street each of them two or three levels and another nine one-bedrooms will occupy the attached former rectory. Prices range from $649,000 to $1.29 million for the roughly 1,000- to 2,000-square-foot units.
After four months of demolition work, the property is still under construction, with an Aug. 31 scheduled completion date by owner Brenco Construction of Milton.
Condo interiors wont have exposed brick or stained glass windows, but the ornate arched frames will be preserved and fitted with new custom windows including a massive one in the penthouses lobby that will provide views of the Boston skyline and landmark buildings such as the John Hancock tower.
Its going to have a contemporary feel inside, said Jacob Carlin, the propertys exclusive listing agent and the owner of JW Brokerage in South Boston. The church was in such disrepair that it was hard to try and save some things.
Features will include hardwood floors, tile bathrooms, professional-grade, stainless steel appliances, granite kitchen countertops, surround sound, walk-in closets and in-unit laundry hookups. Master baths will have walk-in showers with glass surrounds, while the guest baths will have soaking tubs and showers.
Garage parking is being added underneath the church in its former function hall, and residents will have an elevator and access to a clubroom with a kitchenette, surround sound and a flat-screen television.
Built in 1874, the church was designed by Patrick Charles Keely, an Irish-born architect heralded as the most prolific designer of Catholic churches, with more than 600 to his credit, including the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in the South End and more than 30 others in Massachusetts. Under mounting financial pressure, the Archdiocese of Boston closed St. Augustines in 2004, and the citys Landmarks Commission denied a petition to designate it as a landmark.
The former churchs red-brick facade is being preserved and will be repointed, and the slate roof will be maintained. The massive center entrance with its wooden doors and ornamental iron fixtures also will be preserved.
Obviously the architecture of the church is something we could never replicate now it would be too expensive, Carlin said.

Calvary Episcopal hosts tour -

Coinciding with the Church Basement Ladies in the Last Potluck Supper showing at the Liberty Center Association for the Arts, on Thursday the Calvary Episcopal Church hosted a tour and luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, located at 713 S. Ohio Ave. Byron Matson, a vestry member, gave a presentation on the churchs history and original stained glass to approximately 50 people in the churchs Nave.
Members of the local Red Hat Society, the Show Me Ladies with Hatitudes attended the event Thursday. It was church ladies who raised the money and bought the property, Matson told the group. Calvary Episcopal Church began in 1885 and church construction began in 1886.
Calvary Episcopal Church dates back to 1885-86; all of the stained glass windows are original. The lion motif on a south facing window represents St. Mark the Evangelist. Three other windows represent St. John with an eagle, St. Luke with an ox and St. Matthew as a man.
After historical presentations by Matson and by Sunday Supply Priest Father (retired) Harvel Sanders, the group went downstairs to the fellowship hall for lunch and dessert. From left, Gwen Hinken and Janette Pace, both members of the Show Me Ladies with Hatitudes, and Esther Kastis, a guest of Pace, sample brownies at the dessert table. The members of Calvary Episcopal Church provided the home-cooked meal and desserts for the tour.
A descending dove baptismal font, circa early 1900s, sits in front of a north facing jeweled stained glass window at Calvary Episcopal Church. Sanders said the font is in memory of children who died young in the early 20th century. So many died before age 5, he added.
The Ascension of Christ is represented in this north facing stained glass window at Calvary Episcopal Church.

Parish rector Richard LeSueur displays the contents of a 64-year-old time capsule found by Story Construction workers behind the cornerstone of St. Georges Anglican Church in Cadboro Bay last week. The cornerstone was removed during renovations for the churchs new $1.2 million welcoming centre. The capsule, a clear glass bottle, contained a copy of the Victoria Daily Times front page from April 21, 1951, a series of coins from 1 to 50 cents, and a pair of Sunday service bulletins from that year.

The discovery of a buried time capsule has opened a window to the past for members of St. Georges Anglican Church.
The 64-year-old glass bottle was found underneath the original churchs cornerstone during construction of a $1.2-million addition to the Cadboro Bay church, said parish rector Richard LeSueur.
The cornerstone marked the current church, which was built in 1951, but there was nothing to indicate a time capsule of any sort, LeSueur said.
The small glass bottle containing the items broke during construction, but its goods remain intact. The largest item is a cover of the Victoria Daily Times from Saturday April 21, 1951, two days before the cornerstone was put in place. The bottle also had a handful of Canadian coins embossed with the head of King George, bulletins from Sunday services one from April 22, 1951, and one from the current churchs sod-turning ceremony earlier that year, which featured B.C.s Lieutenant Governor Clarence Wallace, who was also a shipbuilder.
The fact that Wallace actually partook in the sod turning is interesting, the interfacing of church and state we dont see now, LeSueur said.
Despite the downsizing of the B.C.s Anglican diocese in recent years, in which many smaller churches were closed, St. Georges is actually expanding in more ways than just its new $1.2-million narthex, or welcoming space.
We have a growing congregation size, and are growing in programs and outreach, with a lot of success through our University of Victoria and young adult program, he said.
