Riverdale Mayor Hardly Excited About Church Replacing Vacant Lot - June 26, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Chicago church plans to build a 6,000-seat mega-church on this vacant lot in south suburban Riverdale, but the mayor doesnt like the plan, because the church wouldnt bring any property tax revenue to the cash-strapped village. (Credit: CBS)

RIVERDALE, Ill. (CBS) South suburban Riverdale has the unfortunate distinction of having one of the nine worst municipal credit ratings in the nation, so the last thing some city leaders want is a new church that wont pay any taxes, but thats exactly what theyre going to get.

The Israel God of Church in Chicagos South Shore neighborhood has plans to move to a vacant lot in south suburban Riverdale, where the Board of Trustees already has approved construction of a 6,000-seat church at 500 W. 138th St.

CBS 2s Dorothy Tucker reports the final sale is scheduled for next month, but the controversy is just beginning.

A defunct fueling station that sits on 19 acres of cracked concrete and overgrown weeds could soon be home to a new mega church owned by the Israel of God church.

We dont need no church. We have a church sitting at least 100 yards away, said Riverdale resident Ken Allen, who is among those who oppose the plans for the mega-church.

Its not because of religious objections, but economic concerns.

Is that church gonna give us jobs? he said. Thats what we need out here. We need work. We need employment We have too much people out here unemployed.

The church also represents a loss of property tax revenue, since the owners of the vacant lot were still paying about $100,000 a year in property taxes for the 19-acre property.

The village was getting about half of that money, and Riverdale Mayor Deyon Dean said they cant afford to lose that funding.

Church celebrates 20th anniversary - June 25, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By SANFORD J. SCHMIDT

GODFREY The pastor of the rededicated Resurrection Lutheran Church said Sunday the building should be more of an oasis or mission post than a warehouse.

The Rev. Ken Tegtmeier said in his sermon that buildings are not ends in themselves but serve a purpose.

Some see the purpose as a place to visit on Sunday to proclaim the Lord, then leave their faith at the church, as you would store items in a warehouse, he said.

But, when seen as an oasis or a mission outpost, the building is merely a place to restore your beliefs and travel out on a journey to proclaim your faith to the outside world, the pastor said.

This place provides us with strength and nourishment for the journey, he said. The journey is more about making God known in our daily lives, Tegtmeier said.

A group of about 75 attended the service in the newly refurbished sanctuary, which was dedicated on the 20th anniversary of the building of the church in Godfrey, where it moved from Henry Street in Alton.

The members visited an outdoor garden containing a statue of Jesus and said a special prayer to dedicate the garden. Special prayers were also offered for the Young Hall, the church offices and the sanctuary.

The church was built 20 years ago at 1211 W. Homer M. Adams Parkway. The cornerstone of the new building was laid June 28, 1992. The building was formally dedicated Sept. 20, 1992.

The first services were held July 18, 1978, at the original building on Henry Street.

The Church Universal is in turmoil – retired archbishop - June 24, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Religion of Sunday, 24 June 2012

    Source: GNA

The Church today is in great turmoil, suffering from internally self-imposed persecution and suppression of the Word, the Most Reverend Dr. Peter Akinola, a retired Archbishop and Primate of Anglican Church of all Nigeria, said on Sunday.

Most Rev. Akinola said it was unfortunate that in recent times, the body of Christ had been turned into a body of crises.

"Work of the Ministry has been made much more difficult over the years for the leadership of the Church by fellow servants of God, he stated.

When we turn every church service into a fund-raising event, every sermon is about money, when we feed the people with theological jargon and not the spiritual milk for their nourishment, we must be aware that the Lord, the Owner of the flock is watching."

In a sermon at the consecration of Venerable Dr. Daniel Silvanus Mensah Torto in Accra, Most Rev. Akinola said the Church was facing external aggression by militant Islamists and acute materialism.

Venerable Mensah Torto, was consecrated by the Most Rev. Dr. Justice Ofei Akrofi, whom he would succeed as the Ninth Anglican Bishop of Accra, when he retires on October 29, after attaining 70 years.

Most Rev. Akinola said the Church today, however, needed loving, humble and selfless bishops, pastors and teachers; who would not be wolves to devour the sheep, but lead them to greener pastures to feed, seek the lost and up-lift the weak.

He noted, "Within our own global Anglican Communion, the Church has been suffering painful divisions and fragmentation, and has been weakened by controversies surrounding heretical challenge to faithful Biblical Orthodoxy, and denial of the basic tenets of the faith."

First United Methodist Church members help those affected by disasters - June 23, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Members of First United Methodist Church in Decatur are finding a niche reaching out to communities forgotten in the aftermath of disaster.

But two trips to help Oakville, Iowa, rebuild from devastating flooding that put Cedar Rapids in the news in 2008 have done more than provide a valuable bonding experience with the townspeople.

The experience has also built bonds among the missionaries that span generations.

So much so that 45 people, up from 35 last year and ranging from preschoolers to retirees, have signed up to go to Poplar Bluff, Mo., to help towns in that area recover from damage related to the deadly tornado that hit Joplin on May 22, 2011.

The group leaves June 24 and returns June 30.

When you sweat next to people for four or five days and eat meals with them, you tend to get better acquainted, said Matt Stevens, 59, of Decatur. Youre also doing something important for people who need help.

Indeed, Marise Robbins-Forbes, her husband, Guy, and daughters, Sydney, 12, and Katie, 9, of Decatur cant wait to get involved after hearing about the mission trips the past couple years.

Were a busy family, so were seeking quality time together and want to instill in our daughters the value of helping others, Robbins-Forbes said.

She suspects Sydney might be asked to help prepare meals for the group because she loves to cook.

Other tasks, besides cooking and construction, include a story/craft time for children in the local park.
