Case Study: Bocci Lighting Installation in Plush Rotunda Penthouse
A private overseas client appointed Sigma London to undertake a lavish light installation in a duplex rotunda penthouse based in Central London. Featuring stunning panoramic views of the citys landscape where magnificent architectural landmarks can be viewed, the building is statuesque in form and the penthouse appears as a beacon from the ground that can be seen for some distance. The property boasts a glazed circular living space with a central void. The top floor folds back from the facade to link the living and dining spaces, which strengthens the height of each room, whilst optimising the breathtaking views.
Sigma London installed a double height Bocci chandelier to strengthen the vertical connection with its floating appearance that descends to fall within the central void with a four metre drop. The chandelier features sixteen individually handblown opaque milk glass spheres created from a complex technique that projects a unique waterfall of light patterns. Suspended from the ceiling on the top floor, each individual pendant falls to a preset height with the final pendant dropping the full four metre height to form the centrepiece to a semi-formal dining table on the lower story.
Urszula Russek, Interior Designer at Sigma London says:
This is a beautifully delicate addition to a spectacular view, which adds a further depth of detail and experience to an otherwise fantastic inner city penthouse."
With their natural light diffusing bubbles, the installation intentionally creates an immersive experience that alters throughout the day and night with multiple reflections beaming from each unique pendant. Each pendant is suspended from a single low voltage cable that powers the low energy fitting, without detracting the view.
Sigma London take a highly personable approach to each commission, which involves creating an individually tailored solution that reflects a real understanding of clients' specific requirements. From renovations and extensions to completely bespoke living spaces, or sourcing one-off pieces, SigmaLondons impressive project portfolio has, until now, been kept exclusive.

To protect farm buildings or even livestock, a pair of products being marketed for use in agriculture as well as many other industries might help out.
One is a battery-powered LED lighting system called Mr Beams that offers spotlights or ceiling lights and can be installed in places where theres no electrical supply.
Another is newly developing wind- and solar-powered lighting and surveillance system technology called Guard Lite, whose self-powered design enables it to be installed at any location without wiring or an electrical permit.
The eastern U.S. companies manufacturing the products say both have tremendous interest from farmers and ranchers who have barns and other buildings without electricity.
Mike Recker, chief technology officer for Mr Beams from Solon, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, said he and his partner started production in 2007, adding that the business took off a few years later after advances in LED lighting that they thought was good enough to install off the grid.
He said the LED developments allowed the light to be bright enough with a battery system that could also do a good job.
They were also able to develop a motion sensor system that provides detection from 25 to 30 feet away.
My grandfather had a barn built in 1915 thats still standing but I remember back in the day I had to grab a flashlight if I wanted to go out there, Recker said.
I dont think many people realize that they can buy a light like this, he said.
When asked about weather conditions, Recker said the light will work well in the cold weather of this region.

Artifacts from the World Trade Center arrived Thursday, June 26 at Fire Station 91 on the North-end of the Island. After being draped in flags and escorted by the Mercer Island Fire Department across the Washington border, a solemn ceremony was held to welcome them to the city.

Dozens of Islanders turned out Thursday afternoon to welcome a 9/11 artifact a beam and chunks of a ceiling and floor from the World Trade Center that will eventually go toward a gateway art installation at the South-end Fire Station.
Mayor Bruce Bassett was on hand to receive the artifact on behalf of the city, as well as Fire Chief Chris Tubbs, Paulette Bufano of the Arts Council, and fire personnel from the Island and other Eastside departments.
[September 11] taught us a lot about ourselves about our capacity to give, to look after others in the community and to work together, said Bassett in opening remarks at a small ceremony at the North-end fire station. These artifacts will become a tribute to those ideals and I look forward to the conversation that they will inspire here on Mercer Island.
The Mercer Island Fire Department was the last recipient of 9/11 artifacts from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
The artifacts shipped from Brooklyn the week before last. They were escorted by Mercer Island firefighters and briefly displayed at the North-end fire station draped in American flags. They will now be transferred to artist John Sisko and architect Jim Brown.
Islanders joined fire personnel, city staff and Mayor Bruce Bassett for a small ceremony Thursday for the above artifacts from the World Trade Center. The beam and ceiling pieces made several stops at fire stations across the country on its journey to the Island (photo courtesy of Ross Freeman).

Orange County Convention Center Construction plans to span 5 years and cost $187 million
In the cavernous halls of the Orange County Convention Center, hard-hatted demolition crews are making a theme-park-sized mess.
They're ripping out lights as big as paint cans, smashing decorative facades and piling broken ceiling tiles along the dusty corridors of West Hall. The destruction warms the heart of project manager Kurt Kotzin.
"All that gingerbread stuff is coming down," said Kotzin. "It'll be a much more modern, open space."
The work is part of a five-year, $187 million renovation of the center, which has 2.1 million square feet of exhibit space. It's the facility's biggest rehab in its 30-year history, and it includes upgrades to everything from signs to roofing to cooling units.
The work is part of a continuous and pricey arms race among convention centers across the country. At $187 million, it is more than twice the cost of the new Edgewater High School, which opened in 2011.
Convention Center Executive Director Kathleen Canning said officials are responding to meeting-planner requests for upscale interiors and smaller, executive-style meeting rooms. University of Central Florida Professor Asli D.A. Tasci said that's crucial if a venue wants to survive.
"You've got to keep improving, refreshing, rejuvenating to keep the attention and interest renewed," said Tasci, of UCF's Rosen College of Hospitality Management. "Otherwise, a destination dies."
But Heywood Sanders, a professor of public administration at the University of Texas at San Antonio, has his doubts. Sanders, who has written extensively about convention centers, said communities routinely overstate the economic benefits of upgrades and expansions.
He said attendance at the center's trade shows and conventions the events most likely to bring overnight guests has hovered around 1 million for 15 years, even though the center added 950,000 square feet in 2003. Sanders said other convention centers across the country have had the same experience.

An artists rendering shows the art in front of the new Fire Station 92.

The Mercer Island Fire Department will this Thursday, June 26, receive artifacts from the September 11, 2001 bombing of the World Trade Center a part of the floor and ceiling sections of one tower garage, and a post between the two that will eventually be incorporated into an art installation and placed in front of the newly remodeled Fire Station 92. A small ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. at the North Fire Station.
The Island was awarded the very last artifacts from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said Amber Britton of the city's Parks and Recreation Department, and when the pieces arrive they will be received appropriately.
We want to show our due sense of respect, said Fire Chief Chris Tubbs.
The artifacts shipped last week after they were cut into pieces at a Brooklyn studio and boarded onto trucks. They will likely stop in Spokane, where the International Association of Firefighters will be meeting.
We will be escorting the piece before it arrives on Mercer Island and we will have firefighters in Class A uniforms, an honor guard and pipes and drums on hand to receive the piece, wrote Tubbs in an email last week. We will also likely have a large flag draped across 78th using two ladder trucks.
Island firefighters have a personal connection to Ground Zero. Battalion Chief Shawn Matheson was deployed to rescue efforts in September of 2001.
For the law enforcement community this event continues to resonate within our industry, says Tubbs, because it was a significant event not only in loss of life...but in the fundamental changes that came about after the event.
Similar installations in other Eastside cities, have caused some controversy. A bronze sculpture made from steel from the World Trade Center and stone from the Pentagon has struggled to find a home after plans fell through for its installation at Heritage Park in Olympia and Kirkland residents vocally opposed it, arguing it had no local connection.

Cascading from the ceiling of New Yorks celebrated Whitney Museum on Madison Avenue was a massive wave of pigmented fiber. A site-specific work, titled Pillar of Inquiry/Supple Column was the newest large-scale sculpture by American artist Sheila Hicks. As one of the 103 artists chosen to exhibit at the 77th Whitney Biennale* (March 7-May 25, 2014) Hicks created Pillar of inquiry/Supple Column using significant quantities of brightly colored Sunbrella material supplied by Glen Raven Custom Fabrics.
Sunbrella: The Raw Material The original, tactile Sunbrella fiber was Hicks choice because of its beauty and durability. Glen Raven Custom Fabrics, which has been manufacturing elegant, sturdy materials since 1961, prides itself on the successful production of high quality, performance fabrics for the awning, marine and upholstery markets. Temperature and weather resistant, Sunbrella fabrics have long been used for various applications for their durability and aesthetic appeal and in the design world for their malleability.
Pillar of Inquiry/Supple Column: The Whitney Museum (New York) Hicks encourages interaction with her art works. Her environmental installations blur the line between indoor and outdoor and between interior and exterior.
Pillar of Inquiry/Supple Column, an 18-foot high installation that tumbled and descended directly from the Whitney Museums grated ceiling to the floor (the building, designed by architect Marcel Breuer, will soon to be taken over by the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art), was designed by Hicks to awaken viewers appreciation and understanding of the architecture by which it is surrounded.
I want people to look at it and let their imagination soar, Hicks said. I know that the museum guards and curators frown on touching the art, but this work can really stand up to any test.
A living painting or a calligraphic sculpture, the works lively clusters of intermingled lines invite participation and reinforce the natural cohabitation of art, architecture and the humans who frequent them.
Guest Curator Michelle Grabner chose Hicks and featured her work as part of the fourth-floor exhibit.
I developed a curriculum that presents identifiable themes that are currently established in the textures of contemporary aesthetic, political, and economic realities, Grabner said. Within this curriculum, contours can be drawn around three overlapping priorities: contemporary abstract painting by women; materiality and affect theory; and art as strategyin other words, conceptual practices oriented toward criticality. Theoretically, the works that I included will each demand from the viewer a varied network of analysis.
*The 2014 Whitney Biennial was orchestrated by three curators from outside the MuseumStuart Comer (Chief Curator of Media and Performance Art at MoMA New York), Anthony Elms (Associate Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia), and Michelle Grabner (artist and Professor at the School of the Art Institute, Chicago).

Papanui Library closes for upgrade -
June 24, 2014 by
Mr HomeBuilder
Papanui Library will be closed in stages over the next few weeks while a new air conditioning system is installed.
The closure will take place in two stages: the rear half of the library will be closed from Thursday 3 - Wednesday 16 July, during which time it will offer partial services, with limited access to the collection and no Babytime or Storytime sessions. The library will be fully closed from Thursday 17 July - Thursday 28 August.
The facilitys Customer Service Desk and Board Room will remain open throughout, offering wider Christchurch City Council services and a meeting space.
Libraries and Information Unit Manager Carolyn Robertson says Papanui Librarys heating system has been due for replacement since prior to the 2011 earthquakes.
"There have been issues for a few years now with hot and cold spots developing in Papanui Library - its current air conditioning system is inefficient, and its more cost-effective for us to replace it than to repair and keep it operating.
"Papanui is one of our busiest community libraries and wed like to apologise to all our regulars for the inconvenience," she says. "Its a complicated process, but the installation is being completed as quickly as possible and will make Papanui Library a much more comfortable place to spend time in.
"The librarys ceiling is quake-damaged and is in need of some work," Mrs Robertson says. "Ideally wed be able to do these jobs at the same time, but the ceiling is still subject to an insurance settlement, so that work will come later."
Papanui Librarys after hours return facility will be cleared daily throughout the closure, and items from Papanui Library can be returned to any library in the Christchurch City Libraries network. The nearest large library is Fendalton Library on the corner of Clyde Road and Jeffreys Road. Reserved items will be made available at Fendalton Library unless otherwise requested.
