Chandeliers map the 1,260 Wellington women who fought to vote
Justine Fletchers jewellery installation 1260 Sign for Change at Toi Pneke Gallery (25 September 18 October) will pay tribute to 23,991 signatories of the landmark Third Suffrage Petition of 1893.
Chandeliers hanging from the gallery ceiling will map Wellingtons suburbs, representing 1,260 of the citys women who fought for the right to vote.
Justine has been making jewellery for 20 years. After teaching herself, she went on to study at Milans respected Scuola Orafa Ambrosiana in the 1990s. Returning to New Zealand in 1997 she was struck by the dramatic erosion of the social welfare system. It rekindled Justines interest in the New Zealand suffragists striving for equality within New Zealand society.
Justine admits raising three children while running her art practice can be a struggle. The fact two of her children have disabilities means the values of a fairer society will always be at the heart of her work.
1260 Sign for Change finds its sentiment in the past, but is equally an exploration of contemporary gender roles and current accepted conventions.
Justines work is interesting for the way in which she represents not only historically significant events, but also the collective potential of people. Jodie Dalgleish, City Arts Advisor says. Here the signing of an important historic document is aesthetically translated in her casting of domestic objects and mode of collection, taking her jewellery practice into the broader realm of installation art.
This new work follows on from 607, the result of her New Zealand Pacific Studio residency.
The NZPS Fellowship was an invaluable opportunity to spend three solid weeks making and installing the pendants across the Wairarapa region, she says. It has definitely inspired me to aim to produce a series of exhibitions in each region. Its hard to comprehend the hard work it must have taken to achieve this law change.
Justines installation is an exploration of textile and texture, evoking stained glass windows and chandeliers. Old-fashioned patterns combine with modern forms and materials through casting, crochet and stitching techniques.

The multiyear transformation of an asbestos-laced abandoned boiler house into a green office complex in Ambler, the installation of a Horace Trumbauer-designed ceiling for the Lincoln Ballroom of the Union League on Broad Street, and the conversion of the deteriorating Nugent Home for Baptists in Germantown into apartments were among winners of statewide historic-preservation awards announced Thursday.
Preservation Pennsylvania, an educational and advocacy group in Harrisburg, said this year's winners of its annual awards represented the fruits of patience and cooperation.
"Partnerships, cooperation, and taking the long-term view are themes that run through many of this year's projects," said Mindy Crawford, the group's executive director.
Other Philadelphia-area projects cited were the renovation of the Ruth L. Bennett Home for Women and Girls and the Wilson Memorial Nursery in Chester; renovation of the elephant house at the Philadelphia Zoo into KidZooU; the Rittenhouse Square centennial restoration; and creation of the Perk History app by the Perkasie Historical Society for use in schools and in walking tours of Bucks County.
The awards will be presented Sept. 26 at a ceremony at Juniata College in Huntingdon.

Della's Kitchen at Delano Las Vegas hotel in Las Vegas is seen during a tour Friday, Aug. 29, 2014. The hotel scheduled its official reopening for Tuesday, Sept. 2 . after an $80 million renovation of the rooms and lobby. (AP Photo/Las Vegas Review-Journal, Erik Verduzco) LOCAL TELEVISION OUT; LOCAL INTERNET OUT; LAS VEGAS SUN OUT
LAS VEGAS (AP) Officials cut the ribbon Tuesday on the South Beach-inspired Delano Las Vegas, the renamed and renovated property on the campus of Mandalay Bay that was previously known as THEhotel.
The 1,100-room, all-suite hotel underwent an $80 million makeover starting in April and was rebranded after the Delano (DEHL'-uh-no) hotel in South Beach, Florida.
New touches include airy, white furnishings in the bedrooms and desert design elements in the public spaces instead of the dark marble of the past. A massive, 126,000-pound boulder culled from southern Nevada was split in two and forms a loose passageway into the hotel from the valet area.
New restaurants at the Delano include the Franklin lounge, which will feature craft cocktails and DJs at night, Della's Kitchen for breakfast and lunch, and the 3940 Coffee + Tea bar with a menu that evolves from juice and pastries in the morning to afternoon tea and snacks over the course of the day.
Mix Lounge, which sits high on the tower and offers sweeping views of the city, remains unchanged for now but is expected to be redone in the coming months.
The hotel was open under its old name while the renovations took place.
The original Delano is believed to be named after President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The brand is especially popular with customers from Latin America, Europe and the East Coast regions that parent company MGM Resorts International is eyeing for growth because those patrons stay longer and spend more than travelers closer to home.
With rooms starting at about $115 on a weeknight and rising to around $500 on busy weekends, Delano offers a mid-priced option on a campus that includes the mass-market Mandalay Bay and the sumptuous Four Seasons Hotel.
It seeks to give sophisticated travelers, especially conventioneers that make up a large portion of its business, a more personalized, boutique experience than they would have in a 4,000-room megaresort.

WSDG has designed over 3500 media facilities worldwide. Credits include Jimi Hendrix's 1969s Electric Lady Studios; NYCs Jazz At Lincoln Center and Le Poisson Rouge. WSDG principals John Storyk (an adjunct professor at Berklee College,) Beth Walters, Sergio Molho and Dirk Noy. WSDG has collaborated with such noted architects as Frank Gehry, Rafael Vinoly, Norman Foster, Oscar Niemeyer, Phillipe Stark and Nicholas Grimshaw.
Acoustics generally take a back seat to aesthetic considerations for homes. And yet, when sound reverberations distort conversation, or when noise leaks in from external sources (or out from blasting home theater speakers) acoustics suddenly becomes a serious concern.
However, an increasing number of residential architects (and individual home owners) have engaged our services to prevent or ameliorate acoustic intrusion. Some examples of the top new residential project that illustrate the point.
Morro du Chapeu Residence How do you keep your pool house from reverberating like a gymnasium without draping the walls and windows with heavy curtains? For the owners of a luxurious villa set on one of Brazils most breathtaking landscapes, the views and pastoral silence were priceless. A long expanse of windows surrounding the infinite lap pool draw attention to the spectacular mountain views. However, the enclosed pool and spa area includes a gym, Jacuzzi and wet bar, surrounded by three walls of double height windows and a movable glass sealing system to maintain interior warmth in the cool evenings. All these elements presented serious sound reverberation issues. Clearsorber Foil, an innovative professional recording studio acoustic treatment, was engaged to eliminate these echos. The pioneering translucent plastic sheets absorb medium and high frequency reverberation to resolve sonic reflections. Each window, (including a skylight grid of 20 individual panels) was custom fitted with the acoustical treatment. Full transparency insures unimpeded views and, conversations free from typical pool house reverberation.
Penna Home Theater Can you isolate a home theater within a luxurious open format apartment without compromising its expansive environment? WSDGs solution was to engage retractable, floor-to-ceiling walls. The resulting installation maintains the homes loft-like, kitchen/ dining/living room atmosphere and delivers a fully enclosed, 377 sq. home theater. Recessed lighting is set into a custom-recording studio-style, acoustic ceiling cloud, designed to absorb sound reflections and aid in tuning the room for optimal acoustic integrity. Two sets of customized, 3-section, telescoping acoustic walls ride out from their nesting units on tracks embedded in the ceiling and floor to isolate the theater from the rest of the apartment. Acoustical fabric absorption treatments were added to the interior of the sliding panels; handsome wooden diffusion treatments were fixed to their exterior sides, and a QRD diffusor was applied to the rear door.
Ribeiro Home Theater Preparing to move to a palatial new penthouse, this client was fully aware of the need for high-level technology and meticulous acoustic treatments to achieve exceptional sound AND eliminate noise leaking into (or out of) his home. To eliminate sound leakage to the lower level WSDG built a floating floor over vibration isolators, which greatly minimize the transmission of noise from the subwoofers to the residential section of the apartment. Additionally, cuts were made in the floor in front of the Adam Sub24 subwoofers to compensate for their vibration. Acoustics were further enhanced by a perforated acoustic treatment, mounted at a precisely calibrated distance from the slab on a wooden-slat-dressed ceiling for superior sound absorption.

The East Central College Board of Trustees accepted a bid from PB Electric, Sullivan, for the installation of an emergency generator system on the colleges main campus.
PB Electric was the low bidder, with a bid of $71,000.
The generator package is to enable the campus to provide continuous power during an outage to Internet, email, the computer network, servers and phone infrastructure.
One thing that is happening right now, is that when we have a major power failure, all communications go off-line we can not get to the outside world, said Phil Pena, vice president of finance and administration. In our society, we use the Internet for everything.
The outages prevent the college from notifying the community the status of the campus and its services, hampers communication to service providers and is hard on the computer, network and phone equipment, Pena said.
The generator is a part of the colleges emergency communications plan. It will power the colleges server room.
Included in the bid is the installation of a separate HVAC system so if temperatures rise during a power outage the equipment doesnt automatically shut down.
The Internet connection will be switched to natural gas power generators so there will not be any future communication outages.
Included in the bid is a 100 kVA (kilovolt-ampere) Kohler natural gas powered generator, an automatic transfer switch, two server room ceiling mounted backup A/C units rated at 2.5 tons each, emergency power for the Buescher Hall telecommunications closet, a one-year warranty on parts and labor and a five-year maintenance agreement on all parts, material and installation labor.
Other bids were received from Casco Electric, Beaufort, $85,780; and Streib Electric, St. Louis, $89,319.

Above, a rendering of the art installation, which uses artifacts from the World Trade Center. It will eventually serve as a sort of gateway to the newly remodeled Fire Station 92.
In June, the City of Mercer Island received artifacts from the World Trade Center that will eventually be installed in front of the newly remodeled Fire Station 92. The artifacts -- a part of the floor and ceiling sections of one tower garage and a pillar bisecting the two -- will be cut to size and installed as a gateway to the station. The Mercer Island Fire Department hopes the piece will encourage dialogue about September 11, 2001 and the events that followed.
The Reporter talked with artist John Sisko, who is working alongside architect Jim Brown, to finalize the piece. This interview has been edited for length and coherence.
Q: You attended the dedication ceremony for the 9/11 beams back in June. What was that like?
A. It was really exciting because it was just about one year from when wed first secured the piece. There had been a lot of bureaucracy...We had to do all sorts of things, insurance forms and contracts.
I was just happy to see the picture of the truck in Pennsylvania [after the artifacts left New York], loaded up and ready to go. We had a patient driver, Tommy, and we started to make arrangements [for the artifacts] to stop at fire houses all over the country. It became this big event. We were in little newspaper articles all over the country. I met the truck in Coeur Dalene, Idaho. Then we crossed the border into Washington and we wanted to accompany it across the state.
[In Spokane] we had three state patrol lead us through the town, blocking intersections. By the time we got to Mercer Island, we had 15 vehicles [behind us], it was crazy. That was a work of art in itself.
Q: How is the piece coming along?
A: Its coming along very well actually. The fire department is [helping us] bring the pieces down to [size]. Were working on getting construction permitting. Its just like youd do for any building actually.
