The Next Generation of Lighting - January 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Manhattan, NY (PRWEB) January 05, 2015

Cisco CBC in Manhattan is now lit with NuLEDs Power-over-Ethernet (UPOE) lighting. This landmark installation at One Penn Plaza marks the beginning of a shift to low voltage Ethernet based lighting systems. Included in the installation are 2x2 LED troffers with RGB ColorBeacons. These color-changing diamonds in the center of the fixtures can be used for visual communication in many applications.

Smart Lighting is the Trojan Horse for connectivity and intelligence. According to Prasanna Venkatesan, Vertical Business Solutions Leader, IoT Group at Cisco, the next generation of lighting will revolve around the Digital Ceiling as the industry moves to Power over Ethernet (UPOE). By powering lighting through Ethernet, the lighting system is not only capable of being measured and monitored, the path is now open to other applications via the network such as HVAC sensors, video surveillance, fire and safety, power management and building access .

The perfect storm for Lighting-over-IP is here LEDs have reached the turning point where they are producing a very high quality of light for nearly half the power of traditional lighting, UPOE (Universal Power-over-Ethernet) is now at 60 watts/port, and the building industry is about to begin the next cycle of growth as gas prices drop, the stock market reaches new highs, and new building energy efficient mandates sweep the nation. The time is now.

Working with Cisco has been an amazing experience, states Lisa Isaacson, Founder of NuLEDs. We have witnessed a new movement from the beginning. After being approached by Cisco, NuLEDs developed the first PoE powered lights to be powered and controlled on by the Ethernet network, and we have been watching the cogs turn in what will be the next generation of lighting.

Manhattan CBC is one of several facilities to install NuLEDs PoE lighting system, including Miami Dade School, Independence Blue Cross and Alpha Tech. Next up will be Cisco London and Ciscos Head Quarters in San Jose.

Springville Museum of Art hosts annual religious art show - January 2, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Diversity of belief and spirituality is reflected in the Springville Museum of Arts 29th Annual Spiritual and Religious Art of Utah exhibition. The show, juried and hung in mid November, features works from Utah artists exploring the spiritual life of varied faiths, peoples and denominations. The exhibit will remain up through January 18.

Julie Hall, lead museum educator for the exhibition, said the celebration of spiritual experiences represented in the exhibit finds commonalities amongst varying beliefs.

This show celebrates the diversity of perspectives, faiths, and religious traditions in Utah, but it also seeks to find common ground amid diversity, Hall said. Our educational focus is on the sacred spaces, shared stories, and simple symbols that our visitors can find and relate to whether the artist is Jewish, Muslim, Christian, etc.

The dozens of pieces in this years exhibit encompass artwork from a range of media and styles, including a floor-to-ceiling installation of the Salt Lake City Temple made out of glass Coke bottles and an intricate cast bronze sculpture of an angel. Also exhibited are more traditional pieces created using oil, charcoal and pastels, as well as photography.

We have some exquisite oil paintings of very traditional religious subjects, but we also have symbolic installations and abstract pieces that prompt contemplation and reflection, Hall said. The exhibition is full of profound and beautiful pieces that are inspiring and powerful.

The exhibition was juried last month, with three artists claiming top spots. Placing third amongst the winners was Michael Hall with his bronze, Heart of Sorrow. Glenda Gleave took second with her oil-on-linen piece, Vessels of the Lord, The Garden Farewell. And Sean Diediker claimed first with his oil painting, Medicine Man.

Diediker, a Spanish Fork artist, called on his familys history with the Navajo of New Mexico for the inspiration behind his painting. Medicine Man depicts a Native American in Western hat and traditional Native American robes. Diediker created the painting from numerous photos taken during the years his grandfathers operated a trading post at Star Lake, New Mexico.

The post had dirt floors, Diediker said. My grandfather basically started from scratch and traded rugs and textiles with the local Navajo. The Navajo took my moms family in as their own.

In a nod to his roots, Diediker had a traditional smudge blessing where cedar, sage, sweetgrass and tobacco were burned in an abalone shell and the smoke spread with eagle fathers over the painting and artist performed by Winston Mason, a Native American from the Mandan/Hidatsa Nation of North Dakota. Diediker believes he owes the success of Medicine Man to the traditional blessing.

He blessed it a week before the show and basically said that wherever this painting goes, whatever home or gallery it ends up in, it will be blessed," he said. "Obviously that blessing worked.

A flock of gulls are giving a seaside greeting to hospital visitors at Cromer.

Sixty seagulls are strung close to the ceiling of the airy glass-fronted Atrium entrance.

They are the creation of north Norfolk artist Kate Munro, who has worked with numerous groups and organisations including educational ones and museums.

Her love of the natural world is an underlying theme in most of her work as demonstrated by her sculpture, called Sea Air.

Ms Munro said the brief was to create something with local relevance and it had to be seagulls.

Some of the polycarbonate blue and white birds are also painted with sky and cloud images.

They are suspended about 10m in the air, and it took five nights to install them, said Ms Munro, a 41-year-old mum of three from St Peters Road.

Installation questioned - December 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MARIE Walker has been left frustrated and frightened after an installation of insulation went wrong this week. Taking advantage of the Federal Government's energy- efficient homes package, Ms Walker agreed to have ceiling insulation installed after a contractor knocked on her door earlier in the week. However, the Ulverstone resident claims she was left with a job half finished by Sydney company Green Engineering. "When they first came to see me they wouldn't give me a quote and I was dubious about that, however, agreed to have the insulation installed for the amount covered by the rebate," she said. "When the workmen arrived on the agreed day, they climbed into the manhole and starting talking in their own language, I couldn't understand a thing they were saying. "They were in the roof for 15 minutes before they told me they were finished and I had to sign the paperwork." Ms Walker was not satisfied with the job done and refused to sign the paperwork, but the workers refused to leave her property without her signature. "I called the police in the end, I didn't know what else to do," she said. "And now I am left worried about the job that they have done and worried about it being a fire hazard." Constable Steve Oliver, from Ulverstone Police, attended Ms Walker's house and alleged the job was a very rough attempt. "We attended Ms Walker's house for a trespass matter," he said. "On further investigation in relation to the Sydney business we found at least five Korean nationals on student visas. "There were two Chinese and one Indian gentleman at the premises." Const Oliver investigated the work in the ceiling while he was at the premises. "In the ceiling it was like a deck of cards had been thrown in there," he said. Ms Walker's neighbour, Ronda Rossetto, was also a customer who had her installation installed by the same company last week. "I had a friend get up in the ceiling and have a look for me and he said only half the lounge room is done and it looks like it was thrown up in there, not placed as it should be," she said. Mrs Rossetto said she had rung the company and had a representative come around. "They said the workers would be back that afternoon but I haven't seen them yet," she said. Green Engineering manager Danny Ye said he had six staff working in Tasmania and all had been trained to install insulation. "I will be calling all customers and checking if they are satisfied with the work," he said.

Casablanca Ceiling Fans – Installation – Ceiling Fan … - December 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

There is nothing better than enjoying the gentle breeze of a ceiling fan during those hot summer nights. Millions of homes around the world have at least one ceiling fan to help cool the home, add lighting, and even dcor. Years ago, ceiling fan designs were plain and boring but over the past several years, new exciting designs have been made and technology has advanced where you can now operate your fan with a remote control.

If you are thinking about installing a ceiling fan in your home, you will find a huge selection from which to choose. No matter what your dcor, there is a multitude of designs available. Best of all, if you are handy around the house, you can install the fan on your own with little or not help.

This is especially true when buying a Casablanca fan, which is designed for the person who loves doing things around the house. These fans have been designed with magnificent designs yet simplistic operation so anyone can install one. In fact, Casablanca has come up with a registered system called Truhanging. With this system, the fan is supported from the ceiling so you have both hands to take care of the wire connections. The ball is self-centering, which makes the fan hang straight. This is especially beneficial if your ceiling is not level or designed with a slope.

Another benefit of choosing a Casablanca ceiling fan is the PermaLock downrod lock. This feature locks the fan in place so it is stable. Additionally, this particular downrod is not only the strongest but also the easiest to install. If you have extra high ceilings, you will also find that Casablanca offers extra long down rods.

When you buy a Casablanca ceiling fan, you will not have to worry about buying all types of separate hardware since everythig you need comes with the fan. In fact, you will even receive the light bulbs, batteries for the remote control, and a screwdriver for getting the installation done.

Brian Greer’s Tin Ceilings – Installation Instructions - December 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Please read entire document prior to starting installation

    Example Layout: (more examples below)

    1. Draw a plan to scale of your ceiling or wall, showing the layout of the panels, moldings, fillers and cornices you wish to use.

    2. (Optional but highly recommended) Cover your ceiling or wall with wood, or wood strips (most commonly used is mahogany or plywood), making sure the work area is level, flat and smooth. (1/4" Minimum thickness is recommended)

    3. Transfer your layout plan showing the placement to the ceiling or wall by applying a grid with a chalk line. (be sure to measure the pieces for exact measurements and to allow for overlap prior to applying the layout to ceiling)

    4. Begin in the centre of the room and work your way out and around the surface, ensuring that you follow the lapping instructions detailed in step 5. *Please note: Two sides of the panel can not be secured until the next piece has been placed underneath*

    5. First install the panels, next fillers, then moldings and lastly cornices, making sure these items lap away from the main entrance, or main viewing area. For Antique Plated finishes please be sure when installing the center panels that the rubbed grain all runs in the same direction!

    6. Nail approximately every 6 to 12" around the outside edges of the tin panel, and in the center where the pattern allows.

    Use one of the following:

    7. We reccomend on larger cornices to use wooden brackets for backing close to the corners and on the overlapped seams. Inside corners are coped, outside corners are mitered. (Templates and pictures are available upon request)

Panera, Chipotle look at January openings - December 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Chipotle Mexican Grill and Panera Bread plan to open in January, according the general contractor.

Chris Palmese, executive supervisor for Frontier Building Corp. out of Miami, said Tuesday that Panera Bread should open by the end of January and Chipotle will open a couple of weeks earlier if all of the final permits go through.

Palmese said Panera Bread and Chipotle are slated to take possession of the building off Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard in the parking lot in front of Books-A-Million, close to the U.S. 70 interchange, on Jan. 13 and then spend about a week training employees.

Usually they open on a Tuesday, Palmese said. So it will probably be Jan. 20 or the 27.

The exterior of the buildingis completed and includes a drive-through for Panera Bread. Workers are now fitting out the interior, Palmese said.

Heating and air and plumbing contractors were installing equipment inside the building that will house both restaurants Tuesday.

The signs for Panera Bread and Chipotle Mexican Grill should be going up on the building by the end of next week, Palmese said.

Kevin Robinson, New Bern city planner, said in April that building plans showed Panera Bread will be 4,300 square feet and Chipotle will be 2,300 square feet.

Palmese said Chipotle will have a seating capacity of 77 and Panera Bread will seat up to 169.

Panera Bread, headquartered in Sunset Hills, Missouri, is a chain of bakery-cafe restaurants in the United States and Canada that specializes in sandwiches, bagels, muffins, pasta, soups, panini sandwiches, salads and artisan breads.

Phillip David Stearns illuminates Burchfield Penney with a captivating installation - December 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A rolling series of snaps and pops drifts through the narrow opening of the contemporary project space in the Burchfield Penney Art Center. It is the sound of Geiger counters measuring background radiation in Phillip David Stearns captivating new installation A Chandelier for One of Many Possible Ends and it fills the nearby halls with its idiosyncratic voice.

Inside the project space hangs a collection of 92 light elements suspended from the ceiling. The elements contain a strip of LEDs in frosted sleeves and look like long fluorescent bulbs, which are fashioned into rhombus-shaped structures in pairs and triplets, with the 45-degree angles pointing up and down. Connected to a Geiger counter, the strips light up each time a radioactive event happens.

The lights and the sounds of the sculpture are constantly firing, like flashes of lightning, and keeping an insectlike chirp in the circulating but warm air of the project space. Stearns elegantly illustrates the plethora of radioactive events taking place unnoticed at every moment.

Walking into the dark room is like stepping into an active thunderstorm cloud, with rain falling on a distant invisible roof. It is almost magical, though Stearns is uneasy with that description.

The only magic is that it makes the unseen visible, he said.

Stearns is best known for his glitch textiles, which visualize computer data and even the DNA sequences of viruses, on scarves and blankets. Using Kickstarter and building on his growing audience with his Year of the Glitch blog on Tumblr, he funded the production of these blankets, and soon a few other art projects as well.

Since he was a child, he has been probing and dissecting tools he finds around him, television aerials, microscopes, tape recorders, electronic instruments and most recently digital cameras and computers.

Im interested in the inherent voices these things have, that also carry, in some ways more political aspects, Stearns explained.

His work tends to explore how to extend the operations of technology, like putting the output of an otherwise silent sound mixer back into itself to give the tool its own voice. The process is analogous to purposely using light leaks in analog film to create chaotic abstract images, though his work explores what the internal processes of these tools can literally say. In the mixers case, it is a loud, harsh scream in which Stearns finds the opportunities for broader questions.

When you have a piece of technology, or a tool, it embodies the ideology of the society that creates it, he said. Is that [scream] a reflection of the society that produces the mixer?
