A suspended ceiling, sometimes also referred to as drop or false ceiling, is a secondary ceiling that hangs a foot or so beneath the actual ceiling. It is a common fixture in offices and in certain areas of the homes such as hallways and living rooms. Suspended ceilings offer significant aesthetic benefits, but are also used to conceal wiring and ductwork, and to improve a rooms acoustics and insulation. In certain cases, the area between the actual and the suspended ceiling, referred to as the plenum, is used for controlling heating/air-conditioning air flow. Suspended ceilings are typically designed in a grid pattern, with each tile in the grid typically measuring between 2x2 feet and 4x4 feet, though individual manufacturers often have various other sizes. The system is entirely modular, and individual tiles can easily be removed to provide access to the plenum. In fact, this is one of the major benefits of suspended ceilings as it gives ready access to wiring, cabling, and it is possible to remove individual tiles in the grid for the installation of lighting fixtures. Suspending ceiling lights are specifically engineered for such ceilings and are designed for easy installation and removal.
Suspending ceiling lights replace individual tiles in the ceiling grid and hang from the actual roof on a strong metal wire or chain. Although typically installed in the middle of the room to provide optimal luminosity, these can be installed virtually anywhere in the grid to create mood lighting. A number of lights are usually arranged in a module and covered with a diffuser for better distribution. Another option is to install down lights, either individually or arranged in a recessed module. The choices vary depending on the use, with large modules more suited for use in offices and commercial establishments, and individual down lights fitting the requirements of home users more.
If this is the first time installing suspended ceiling lights, follow this step by step guide to installing them correctly.
The first step in the installation process is selecting the right ceiling lights. As it is a modular system, the range of available choices is vast. Chief considerations include the choice of diffuser, module or individual down light, and choice of bulbs/tubes used in the lights.
A diffuser is a sheet of plastic used to cover a module of lights to provide better light distribution and improve aesthetics. The available options include:
Prismatic diffusers have raised prisms on one side which diffuses the light and enhances aesthetic appeal. Typically made from polystyrene and covered with a UV protective coating. Mostly used in offices.
An embossed panel of polystyrene with a crushed ice patter, typically used in offices, and available in a range of colours. Popular colours include clear and white.
Lattice diffusers have a texture surface arranged in small grids, usually 1x1 inches in dimension. The grids are either perpendicular or diagonal.
Egg crate diffusers are made from acrylic and designed for maximum light output. The diffuser is designed like an egg-crate, with space in-between for light to shine through.
The choice in modules ranges from modules for individual down lights to large arrays of lights designed for maximum light output.

Take a close look at the above picture of a typical cathedral ceiling. Details are on page 42 in our new 2nd edition book.
Joint "A" is a standard inside corner. The horizontal turn crown slope angle for joint "A" is 52 deg. (Joint "A" is a horizontal turn of the crown molding)
Measure the angle between the adjacent walls in the corner with your True Angle Tool and, using the Crown Molding & Trim book, Compound Miter Chart, Crown Molding Table or the Excel Program, look up the miter and blade tilt to cut the crown molding. Use your crown molding templates to make sure you have set up you saw correctly.
This is the left-hand piece, inside corner, horizontal turn that will go in the corner at joint "A".
For and inside corner horizontal turn you will always be able to see the saw cut and the pointed end will always be at the bottom of the crown molding.
Cut the mating right-hand piece using the same saw settings. This is the crown moulding that goes from joint "A" to "B".
Now this is where it gets a little tricky.
Joint "B" is an outside corner, vertical turn. (The crown turns up and continues on to joint "C".)

SOUTHINGTON YMCA officials announced new donations and the achievements of the past year at the groups annual meeting Wednesday night at the Aqua Turf Club.
One of the YMCAs capital projects has been the renovation of the pool. The work will include new observation decks, new lighting and ceiling and better handicap access through the installation of an elevator.
YMCA Executive Director John Myers said the Main Street Community Foundation donated $300,000 from the Bradley Barnes and Leila Upson Barnes Memorial Trust toward the elevator project. When he learned the elevator was going to cost more than anticipated, Myers asked if the foundation could help further.
On Wednesday, president and CEO of the Main Street Community Foundation Susan Sadecki, said the YMCA would receive an additional $130,000 to support the spectacular project.
We are so pleased to present the Southington YMCA with a grant for 130k to further fund the completion of the elevator, Sadecki said. I believe that Bradley Barnes, if he were still here today, would be very impressed with this project.
Myers said that late last year, a local family came to the YMCA wanting to give an anonymous $250,000 donation and an additional $200,000 matching grant. About 75 percent of the matching grant funds have been raised.
Myers said the story and the familys support of the YMCAs mission gives him goose bumps.
What a feeling, he said.
Melissa Sheffy, the outgoing president of the YMCAs board of directors, said building improvements such as a new parking lot and renovated locker rooms had been accomplished with capital funds.
When I look around the parking lot and its packed, I wonder where everyone parked before, she said.

Takahiro Iwasaki: Reflection Model.
EXPERIMENTA: RECHARGE
With a contemporary art landscape largely defined by its multiplicity of genres and technologies, you can't help but wonder about the enduring relevance of a technology-based arts biennale such as Experimenta, now in its eighth edition. What to make of an event that showcases video, light, kinetic sculpture, sound and other technology-centric works when they are already part of today's wider art lexicon? That said, good art is good art and while there are a few too many works that fail to transcend their tech-centricity, there are plenty that subtly broach the exhibition's thematic bearings of reinterpreting history through technology's lens. Khaled Sabsabi's vast 3D, 100-channel video installation composed of 70,000 layered photographs is an immersive and spectacular deconstruction of place, politics and propaganda, where Berlin-based group Korinsky's sound and sculptural installation pulses with droning energy and physicality. A sound and strobe light installation by Stuart McFarlane, Darren Verhagen and Toby Brodel, meanwhile, transforms and animates a simple wire sculptural object into a dynamic, ever-changing form.

TAKAHIRO IWASAKI: REFLECTION MODEL (ITSUKUSHIMA)
While one can't ignore the fastidious detail imbedded in Japanese artist Takahiro Iwasaki's prodigious architectural model of the sacred Itsukushima Shrine off the coast of Hiroshima, his series of sculptures created as a commission for the NGV resonate for their almost surreal optical and spatial effect. Suspended by wires attached to the ceiling, the vast wooden models not only quote the meticulous structural and architectural detail of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and its famed "floating" Torii gate, but physically mimic the reflections created by the water that surrounds the actual site. It's a simple but remarkably powerful device. Iwasaki's levitating sculptures use fastidious realism to recreate a perceptual conceit that is the divine work of both architecture and nature.

A federal agency is accepting bids to renovate the judge's chamber inside the Donald S. Russell Federal Building. The estimated cost to overhaul the 3,040-square-foot office area is $1 million to $5 million.
The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) is accepting bids through Wednesday.
According to information posted on the Federal Business Opportunities website, renovations include the abatement of hazardous materials and a complete redesign of interior spaces and installation of new finishes.
Included in the redesign are new wall, floor, and ceiling finishes; lighting/power and data; door systems; custom millwork; signs; toilet and break area; and a sprinkler renovation.
GSA Public Affairs Officer Saudia Muwwakkil wrote in an email that GSA expects renovations to U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Henry F. Floyd's chamber to begin in April and take six months.
The renovation will include lead and asbestos abatement; new mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire suppression system installations; and other work needed for better maintenance and use by the Circuit Court, Muwwakkil wrote.
The Donald S. Russell Federal Building was built in 1931 and originally housed Spartanburg's main post office, federal courthouse and offices.
The Spartanburg Herald Journal reported that the Georgian Revival style building was constructed for $360,000 more than $5.6 million in today's dollars when adjusted for inflation.
The first cases were heard Dec. 9, 1931, with 20 people pleading guilty to violating then national prohibition laws.

It shakes, has holes, and is 80 feet high above the ground, but that hasnt stopped 100,000 people from visiting and climbing K21 Museums giant art installation that looks like a futuristic spider web. In fact, the installation, which opened in summer 2013 and was only to last for a year, has been thoroughly tested and deemed completely safe for the thousands more humans who would like to move about the net like insects in a spider web for yet another year. The experience has proven so captivating with visitors that the installation will remain open until the end of 2015.
The installation by artist Toms Saraceno is called in orbit and creates three different levels of steel wire and transparent orbits that brave visitors can access. Their movements cause vibrations like in a spider web which, combined with the lofty heights, create a fascinating spatial experience. The wire mesh alone weighs 3 tons; the largest of the spheres 6 total and up to 27 feet in diameter weighs more than 600 pounds; and the entire net structure spans an area of almost 27,000 square feet.
The piece, which incorporates concepts from nature and references from Jules Verne to American architect and visionary Richard Buckminster Fuller, is awe-inspiring for any visitor -- whether they decide to access it or not -- and emotions about life and death, thrill and fear, are part of the experience.
The K21 Museum and its sister museum K20 together hold one of the most Internationally renowned collections of 21st and 20th century art, respectively. Yasuaki Onishi's work aims to make visible that which commonly goes unseen. Specifically, the Osaka-based installation artist is interested in negative space, gravity, and scientific phenomena as forces and elements of spatiality that shape our world without making an appearance. Now, contextualized within Kala Art Institute's (2990 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley) fortieth anniversary group show, Seeing Time Time Traveller, his work gains a dimension that reflects on temporality.
The show, which also features fascinating works by Ranu Mukherjee, Freddy Chandra, and Desire Holman, presents a group of Kala's fellowship alumni. With explicit allusion to Kala's groundbreaking 19821992 program Seeing Time, which involved installations and performances throughout the Bay Area exploring the visualization of time, Kala curator Mayumi Hamanaka intends for this show to expand on that theme, investigating the notion of time travel.
Onishi's stunning installation "Vertical Emptiness" stands out because it combines fine detail and large scale. This site-specific installation is one incarnation of a piece that was first created for the Kyoto Art Center. It consists of several tree branches hung upside-down from the ceiling, draped with thousands of strings of hot glue that fall to the floor, and are sprayed with a white, snow-like substance called urea. The room-size result evokes an upside-down frozen wonderland. The long threads of glue create a stringy forest of white tendrils reaching delicately for the earth. In an interview, Onishi explained that his intention was to create an inverted world, in which people are standing upside down in the sky, experiencing gravity backwards.
A collection of painting-like wall-hanging sculptures is displayed behind the installation, forming windows into a contrasting black backdrop. They are created from black hot glue, graphite, and aluminum powder mixed and layered on wooden panels. Onishi calls most of these works "Plate of Phenomena," because they are process-based explorations of the various states that glue embodies as it transforms from a heated liquid to a cold solid. He applies the heated glue onto the canvas, then manipulates it as it dries in order to form organic textures that reflect its transformation over time. Each thread of glue left on a branch in Vertical Emptiness, similarly creates a tangible record of its own movement through time and space, as it solidifies on its way to the ground.
Another testament to time embedded in Vertical Emptiness is the work's own ephemerality. Onishi spent an entire week in the gallery dripping glue from each of the branches. But, like a sand mandala, Onishi's installation must be destroyed at the end of the show, for lack of a method to preserve it. Its appearance is like a flashlight shining on a thinly woven spider web, illuminating glistening architecture within the void of darkness, as if, for a moment, revealing the invisible infrastructure of the weightless parts of the world.
Through March 21. Free. Kala.org
