Street Smart: What to do in Ballston - April 4, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Kris Coronado April 3

Axon Xylophone Bridge From Ballston Metro Center (901 N. Stuart St.) to Stafford Place I (4201 Wilson Blvd.), east of Welburn Square. Installation open through fall 2015.

When commuters traverse this skywalk, many are unwittingly participating in a whimsical installation. Multicolored LEDs along the ceiling are triggered by passing pedestrians, creating an illuminated trail as 48 sound effects sporadically play. "There are some people who are more alert than others," says Alex Braden, a member of zerozero, the artistic collective that created the piece. "Some will stop in the middle of the bridge and look up like, What's going on?"

Ballston CrossFit 1110 N. Glebe Rd.

Come for fitness, stay for love? "We just had a couple get engaged who met here," says owner and head coach Tucker Jones, right. Since opening in February 2012, the 5,600-square- foot space has become a haven for the 20- to 30-something work-hard, play-hard demographic. At first glance, the setting may come off macho -- walls painted in reds and blacks, barbells and kettle bells along the floor -- but Jones estimates that 55 percent of the club's 275 members are women.

    Willow 4301 N. Fairfax Dr.

Talk about good karma: At the eatery's opening-night party, chef and co-owner Tracy O'Grady exchanged vows with husband Brian Wolken in the lobby. A decade later, the spot -- owned by Grady, Wolken and pastry chef Kate Jansen -- is a reliable destination for inventive and locally sourced seasonal fare riffing on French and Italian. A spacious dining room offers a white-table-clothed option for those seeking an oomph of elegance, while Nosh, the restaurant's lounge area, has an intimate bistro vibe.

    Big Buns 4401 Wilson Blvd.

A floor mat before a register boasts, "Our burger can BEAT UP your burger." Another proclaims, "I like BIG BUNS and I cannot lie." They're indicative of the playful tone of the casual joint owner Tom Racosky debuted in 2007. While burgers are the bulk of the biz, customers can opt for other proteins (turkey burgers, crab cakes) on a bun or over a salad.

Diy statement light fixtures — fabulous and frugal - April 4, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Provided by Networx.com

There's nothing like a gorgeous new electric light fixture installation to power up your home decor. Whether mounted on a wall or the ceiling, statement lighting gives a fabulous focus to any room of the house. While replacement of all the light fixtures in your home could end up costing a pretty penny, there's a more frugal and creative way to get the look you love. Use your creativity to glue, paint, or assemble DIY light fixtures -- it's easy and inexpensive! Just look at all this inspiration from bloggers on Hometalk.

Unique Wood Shim Bathroom Mirror Light

Would you believe that this oh-so-individual mirror light was a cliched Hollywood fixture in a former life? The aging star got a new lease on life from Shelly at Life on Sale, with the help of simple wood shims cut to equal lengths. Cost of the facelift, part of a budget bathroom makeover, came to a mere $7.00.

Beautifully Un-Boring Stained Glass Light Shade

Just about every home has a standard square white glass light shade or two hanging around somewhere. Borrring! But Diane C is an artist at heart, and she worked decorating magic with stained glass paint to rev up a more colorful and polished look. The dazzling difference is incredible!

Fun and Flowery Coffee Filter Light Fixture

This frilly, flowery fixture is actually a plain Jane paper lampshade, upgraded on the cheap. How? Well, blogger Stephanie of twozeroone tried the classic rolled-up coffee filter trick to create dozens of "blossoms." Using a little bit of glue plus a lot of patience, she created a striking overhead light for her entryway.

Classy Patterned Beauty for the Foyer

Brass foyer lights used to be the latest thing but now they're so last century. Rather than send it off to the landfill, Brittany aka Pretty Handy Girl brought this light fixture into the 2000s in a two-step process. She toned down the brassiness with bronze spray paint and applied a silkscreened Moorish stencil pattern to the glass.

Giant slides to return at gallery - April 1, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The giant spiralling slides which proved a huge hit at Tate Modern are returning to London's South Bank.

Conceptual artist Carsten Holler installed slides - which caused several injuries - at the former power station's Turbine Hall in 2006.

Now visitors will be able to descend from the Hayward Gallery's glass pyramid ceiling to its entrance level on one of two 15-metre high slides commissioned especially for an exhibition opening later this year.

Built into the gallery's exterior wall, the slides will "constitute a graceful sculptural installation" while also being a device for "experiencing an emotional state that is a unique condition somewhere between delight and madness", the artist said.

The show - Carsten Holler: Decision - will also feature Flying Machines, which will be installed on one of the Hayward's outdoor terraces.

It will give visitors the sensation of "lifting off" and soaring above Waterloo Bridge opposite.

A new work, Moving Beds, will feature two robotic beds which "mirror each other's movements as they roam the galleries".

The show, one of the highlights of the Southbank Centre's summer programme, will also include a large installation of the Belgian-born artist's signature creation, fly agaric mushrooms.

Pill Clock (2011-15) is comprised of a ceiling-mounted timepiece that will drop over one million pills on to the gallery floor during the course of the exhibition, with a drinking fountain for visitors who decide to take one of the pills.

Hayward Gallery director and exhibition curator Ralph Rugoff said: "Carsten Holler is truly one of the world's most thought-provoking and profoundly playful artists, with a sharp and mischievous intelligence bent on turning our 'normal' view of things upside down."

At first Bay Area Book Festival, a temple made of books - March 26, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Arendition of the Lacuna installation to bebuilt around the dormant fountain foundation in Berkeleys Civic Center Park as a centerpiece of the inaugural Bay Area Book Festival on June 6-7, 2015. Image: FLUX

Berkeley, its been said, is a book town. But never before has it had an actual temple made of books.

Rising in Civic Center Park this June will be a public art installation made out of 50,000 books. The walls and ceiling will be constructed from books, the circular ceiling will be alive as pages of intact books strung upside down from guy-wire flutter in the wind like prayer flags. The walls of shelves will be permeable, the entire structure evanescent because the purpose of this library-temple is for the books to be given away.

This installation will be one of the centerpieces of the first annual Bay Area Book Festival being held in downtown Berkeley all day Saturday and Sunday, June 6-7, 2015. The festival will bring more than 225 authors to speak on indoor stages. Downtown streets will fill with 150 literary exhibitors, a Childrens Arena, a Teen Stage, a Cooking Stage, a chalk street art contest, food trucks, and more.

The installation, called Lacuna, will be built around the dormant fountain in MLK Jr. Civic Center Park. It will invite festivalgoers to enter, browse, sit for a while and take a book. Organizers aim for it to be a respite from the busy festival.

The idea was born when Brewster Kahle, director of the Internet Archive, made a startling offer to Cherilyn Parsons, founder and director of the festival. The nonprofit Archive has a mission to create a free Internet library by scanning and archiving the worlds cultural artifacts including books, movies, music, images, and websites. People send millions of physical books to be scanned, and the Archive keeps a physical copy of each. But they have duplicates lots of duplicates.

At a party in May 2014, Kahle told Parsons about duplicates he couldnt store any longer at his 70,000-square foot Richmond warehouse. He offered Parsons 200,000 books for the festival on condition that they be given away to be read that they be used as books.

I immediately envisioned a structure made of books, a kind of city of books, said Parsons.

The project grew into an artistic installation thanks to the efforts of Victoria Rojas, who became the festivals volunteer Public Art Manager. Involved in the public art world, Rojas has been part of the Black Rock Public Library community at Burning Man, and had started a small festival in San Francisco around Banned Books Week.

Rojas pulled in the FLUX Foundation, a Bay Area-based nonprofit arts organization that engages people collaboratively in designing and building large-scale public art. The group has a strong portfolio building large-scale art of this kind, including the Temple of FLUX (Burning Man, 2010) and The Sidewalks End (Coachella, 2013).

Ceiling Installation Cost | Drop and Drywall Ceiling Prices - March 24, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A drywall ceiling installation is a process that attaches pieces of sheetrock or drywall to the actual framework of the home itself. Drywall or sheetrock is a semi-permanent and partially durable material used in various applications. Made of compressed gypsum, it is very heavy, especially in the large sheets needed to cover an entire ceiling. Although this can prove to be costly depending on how much drywall you need, it is generally the preferred and most commonly seen type of ceiling. Expect material costs to consist of the rather expensive drywall itself, some lumber, screws and finishing materials. Most finished rooms have drywall ceilings that can be painted the same as any other wall.

A general contractor can take on this job, and it will probably take a crew of several men two to three days for it to be completely finished. Expect to pay hundreds of dollars in labor costs, and near or in excess of a thousand for the entire job, largely depending on the area of the room.

Installing a drop ceiling can not only be a cost-effective construction option but also affords many other features not available with drywall. To install a drop ceiling, a metal frame is used to hold up ceiling tiles normally made of a cardboard-type material. The tiles are prefabricated and simply drop in once the metal frame is assembled. Drop ceilings are very inexpensive compared to wall board or drywall in both materials and labor. Expect the costs to be cut in half compared to drywall. A drop ceiling can be installed in one day by a general contractor and involves little to no finishing work. Drop ceilings are the preferred application in basements due primarily to how easy it is to access pipes, electrical work and air ducts located above the ceiling.
