Here at Ceilume, we've got ceiling panels on the brain. We can't go into a building of any kind without saying "Hello" (we're nothing if not polite) and then looking up. The things we see are amazing - both good and... well... beyond bad!

Throughout history, the ceiling has been everything from an inspiring design element to an afterthought. It has been home to some of the world's greatest works of art and architecture, but, more frequently, to plain sheetrock and clusters of cobwebs. Have you looked uplately? If so, you are much more likely to encounter the latter than the former, and you don't need a ladder to see either (sorry, I couldn't resist!).

The late 1800's and early 1900's saw widespread use of decorative stamped metal ceiling tiles - a great alternative to the fancy plasterwork of the day (which was expensive and tended to fall on people). As a result, ceilings for the common folk came into their own, and theywere really something to see. Many such ornate metal ceilings still exist in buildings of a certain age, so be sure to keep an eye out for them. A slight rabbit trail: the town of Silverton, Colorado is absolutely full of historic metal ceiling tiles. Taking the narrow gaugerailroad there and back from Durango is also a blast, and highly recommended.

Unfortunately, for the second half of the last century, designers and builders mostly turned their attention away from ceilings, and a long "blah" period ensued. The ceiling had become a mere footnote to the design process; a place to hang lighting and collect dust.

Beginning in the 1950's, there was a significant rise in the use of suspended ceiling panels, both in commercial spaces and homes (see "blah" period, above), and it was actually this long dearth of design that precipitated today's ceiling renaissance. As new people occupiedthese spaces, they were greeted with old, stained and broken tiles that need replacing, or with plain lay-in ceilings that were just plain ugly. With the dawn of the new century came a new awareness of that previously overlooked space overhead, and a renewed appreciation forthe possibilities to be explored there.

No longer content with plain mineral fiber ceiling panels or flat drywall, designers, architects, businesses, and homeowners demanded something more and those of us in the ceiling industry responded. An extraordinary number of ceiling choices are now available: stamped metaltiles (commonly called "tin", though they were never actually made of tin), glue up plastic tiles, and vinyl drop ceiling panels in beautiful finishes and colors. There truly is a ceiling treatment to fit every taste, every space, and every budget, and that's a good thing.

All of us deserve to spend our lives under ceilings we can look up to, and now we can!

The Unused Confetti From Hillary Clinton’s Election-Night Loss Is Now a Work of Art – artnet News - July 12, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

Theres no denying the first half of 2017would have been very different had Hillary Clinton defeated Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election. In her current St. Louis gallery exhibition, artistBunny Bursonremembers the future that very nearly was, creating an artwork using the iridescent confetti that was primed to go off on election night this past November 8, had the country elected its first woman president.

A longtime Clinton devotee, Burson was the executive director of thePresidents Committee on the Arts and the HumanitiesunderPresident Bill Clintons administration. In the aftermath of the 2016 election, she hopes her art will helpmotivate women to run for office in 2018.

Bunny Burson, And Still I Rise (2017) installation view at Bruno David Gallery, Clayton, Missouri. Courtesy of Bruno David Gallery, Clayton, Missouri.

I was among her supporters at the Javits Center waiting for the symbolic shattering of the glass ceiling and the shard like confetti to fall down on us. We left the Javits Center at 2 in the morning with profound emptiness, Burson told NBC. The unused confetti had to be removedfrom the air cannons and swept into empty boxes by workers.

I wanted to fill that emptiness with hope by giving voice to my feelings that even in defeat, Hillarys confetti could be used to inspire the next generations of little girls and young women to dream big and to act on their dreams, she added.

Tracking down the unused confetti was no easy task. Burson made calls to Arkansas, Boston, New York, Connecticut, Illinois, and Washington, DC. Though many warned her the confetti she sought had likely wound up in the trash, Bursons quest was ultimately successful.

After about two weeks of searching, she tracked downthe confetti in Chicago and was able to acquire several large boxes of it200 pounds, to be exactfor her work.

Bursons sculpture, titledAnd Still I Rise, takes its titlefrom the Maya Angelou book of poetry of the same name. Pieces of clear, shiny confetti swirl around inthe gallery window, which has essentially been transformed into a political snow globe. The works title is printed on the glass in white block letters. The colorless confetti was chosen for itsresemblance to shards of broken glass, to represent the breaking of the highest, hardest glass ceiling, as Clinton referred to a woman someday winning the presidency.

For Burson, the artwork is more than just a message of hope, but a call to action in the face of Trump administration policies. We need to think about all of these rights that we have sort of gotten used to, which we may not always havewomens rights, voting rights, shetoldSt. Louis Public Radio.Elections have consequences, serious consequences we need to stay engaged.

The piece is displayed 24 hours a day in the gallerys front window, overlooking Forsythe Boulevard.

Bunny Burson: And Still I Rise is on display through at Bruno David Gallery,7513 Forsythe Boulevard, Clayton, Missouri, May 4August 12, 2017.

Source: Westin to pay for sound mitigation inside The Nook nightclub following lawsuit settlement – Community Impact Newspaper - July 12, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

Community Impact Newspaper has learned thatThe Westin Austin Downtown hotel and The Nook Amphitheater have reached a settlement in alawsuit over loud music the hotel claimed was a nuisance to its customers. The hotel sued the club for $1 million in damages late last year for disturbances attributed to the Sixth Street nightclubs loud music.

According to emails obtained by Community Impact Newspaper, the two sides reached an agreement that has the Westin Hotel, 310 E. Fifth St., Austin, paying for sound mitigation technology and its installation inside the nightclub, located at 309 E. Sixth St. Eric Taube, attorney for the Westin, confirmed the settlement but said the details were confidential and declined to comment further.

The JBN Sound Ceiling was developed in Sweden in the 1980s. It is a speaker system installed on a ceiling that send sound waves straight down and allow for minimal noise bleed. Christopher Neely

If the details of the settlement are correct, the solution would align with the Agent of Change Principle, outlined in Mayor Steve Adlers Music and Creative Ecosystem Omnibus Resolution. The resolution sought recommendations and policy solutions to questions raised by Austins creative community on how it will fit into the citys rapidly growing landscape.

The Agent of Change Principle states that the burden of sound mitigation is placed on the party that arrives in a location second or later. If a hotel or home is slated to be built next to a live music venue and loud music poses a problem, that hotel or homeowner is deemed responsible for providing sound mitigation.

On the other hand, if a live music venue wants to set up shop in a neighborhood where neighbors may take issue with live music, the venue needs to provide the sound mitigation. In this case, The Nook was in operation first, thus the burden of sound mitigation is placed on the Westin, according to the principle.

The Nook will ostensibly be outfitted with a 96-panel JBN Sound Ceiling, which is a rectangular panel of speakers installed on the ceilingtypically over the dance floorthat sends the sound straight down, allowing for minimal bleed. The hardware will be flown over and installed over the next few weeks, according to the emails.

The technology was tested in March at an event at Brazos Hall. On the dance floor directly under the speakers, the sound was pumping at a measured 100 decibels. But 65 feet back the sound level was cut by 20 decibels, and 275 feet away the decibel level was cut in half.

An attempt to reach JR Rodriguez, The Nooks general manager, was also unsuccessful.

These days, the condition of market economy has been such a headache for all. So everybody is trying to cut down unnecessary costs.

    2) If you have read online articles on how to install ceiling fan at home, then you might have realized that it requires various tools and electrical equipments. Faux tin drop in ceiling tiles can be used on an existing grid system without the need to remove the existing tiles. They are a convenient option for anyone that wants to transform their ceiling without using adhesives to make this possible. In addition to this, they can be easily removed from the existing tiles if you decide to recapture the old look you once had. They can be used on any size ceiling and are easy to handle by DIY individuals. In the video you will see a quick presentation of how these tiles are installed onto an existing tile system.

    Preliminary Steps

Step 1: You will not need to find the center of the room when you are installing faux tin drop in ceiling tiles. This is because you can use the outlay of the existing tile system as a guide. Simply install the first tile by pushing the ends into the creases of the existing grid system. Take care not to push too hard on the tile, but just gently enough to insert it over the existing tile.

Step 2: Repeat the same process described in Step 1 until you have completed all of the whole tiles and are left with the corners.

Step 3: The cut-to-fit faux tin drop in ceiling tiles may need an adhesive to hold them tightly in place. This is because they will not be held from all four corners into the existing grid system. However, if you are able to cut the tiles to ensure a tight fit between the wall, then you may just dispense the adhesive.

    Extra Tips:

Tip 1: Always remember that you should never use adhesive on the tile until you have tested it in the desired location.

Tip 2: Try combining different faux tin drop in ceiling tiles to create a checkered effect on the ceiling. However, choose colors that complement each other and most importantly that complement the room.

Tip 3: If you do decide to use different tiles, then ensure that the embossed designs complement each other as well.

Tip 4: If you do not wish to use adhesive on your faux tin drop in ceiling tiles, then you can use moldings at the corners of the ceiling. The moldings will push the rest of the tiles in place if they are not perfectly attached.

    Main Advantages

Quick Installation: Installation period can range from a few hours or days depending on the size ceiling you are covering. The absence of adhesive is also an advantage since you wont need to remove the existing tiles to glue them to the new tiles. This has a direct impact on the installation time involved.

Affordable: Faux drop in ceiling tiles are affordable and can keep your remodeling project within your budget range regardless of the number of ceilings you will cover.

Easy to Remove: They are easy to install and also easy to remove as well. You can use a small plastic knife to loosen the four corners and remove the tiles. This is a perfect option for someone that just wants to give their ceiling a quick facelift for a special event, but intend to use the old grid system afterwards.
