Upon returning home to your condo after a long day at the office, all you want is some peace and quiet. As the front door closes behind you and the outside world fades, you remove your shoes and walk over to the couch to relax. Unfortunately, before you can clear your head, the downstairs neighbor begins playing opera music -- again -- at a volume loud enough to be considered a live performance. Not the quietest welcome home.
One of the advantages of carpet is that it dampens the noise around you. In fact, carpeting can create a comfortable, soft feel throughout your home. Carpet can also be a beautiful accessory and can really liven up a room; often, the color and style of your carpet is as important to your home's design as the furniture you select.
Once you've picked out the perfect combination of style and color, it's time to decide whether you are going to hire a professional to install it or make a go of doing it on your own. There are a lot of things to consider before you tackle carpet installation yourself. Often, it might be best to bring in a professional to do the job.
The two approaches -- working on your own and having professionals do the installation for you -- each has its advantages. The determining factors for both revolve around cost, effort, equipment and how much time you are willing to invest in the project.
On the next page, we'll look at some of the pros and cons of professional installation versus do-it-yourself (DIY) installation.

Wouldnt it be great if carpet could grow like grass? Just throw down some seeds, sprinkle it with water and BINGO! a beautiful new floor covering for your family to enjoy! Unfortunately, its not that easy. If youre installing carpet into a home you already occupy, theres furniture to move, old floor covering to rip out and possibly subfloors to replace or repair.
But dont stress out. By following these pointers, your installation process should be fairly painless kinda like that last cavity removal. Just kidding.
Go Pro
These days, everyone with a carpet staple gun thinks theyre an installer. Dont be fooled. A business card and a pick-up truck do not a professional carpet installer make. It takes years to develop the skills for professional carpet installation, skills like minimizing and hiding seams, matching surface transition heights and using specialized tools. Do it right the first time. Your retailer is your best source. Hire a pro. Click here to find a professional carpet installer in your area.
Use a Seaming Diagram
The carpet you chose as lovely as it is, probably doesnt come in a roll wide enough to fit your entire room. Face the facts. Its going to need to be cut and seamed together. Plan ahead and work with your retailer and installer to create a seaming diagram that carefully plots out the seams and transitions before any cuts are made. It just may be possible to place those seams where no one will ever notice them!
Plan Ahead
Call a friend, hire a team, do whatever you need to do, but make sure you remove furniture and other stuff from the room in which your new carpeting will be installed. You probably dont want carpet installers handling your precious things and they may charge you extra for the opportunity.
Decide What To Do With Your Existing Floor Covering
Will your new carpet be installed over your existing floor covering, or do you want your existing floors or carpets removed before the new one is put in? Removal of old flooring or carpeting can be time consuming and someone has to haul it away and dispose of it responsibly. Be sure to discuss the situation with your retailer or installer and assume that at least one day will be spent on removal, cleanup and preparation.

Measure the longest walls in your room. Multiply the length and width, and divide by 9 to determine the square yardage. Add 10 percent to allow for errors, irregularities and pattern matching.
Make sure the surface to be carpeted is smooth and clean. Scrape up any paint or joint compound and sweep and vacuum the floor thoroughly.
If possible, remove the doors from the room so you won't have to work around them. Having the doors out of the way will also make it easier for you to cut off the bottoms of the doorjambs if necessary.
Cut the tackless strips to size with a strip cutter or heavy snips (Image 1). Nail the strips 1/2" from the wall (Image 2). Don't install tackless strips across thresholds or doorways; the tacks on the strips are sharp and could poke through the carpet and hurt your feet. Tackless strips come in a variety of widths, thicknesses and heights. Make sure you're using the correct size. If you're installing carpet over a concrete subfloor, use masonry tacks or epoxy adhesive to hold the tackless strips in place.
Lay out the carpet pad perpendicular to the direction you plan to install the carpet (Image 1), and staple it near the tackless strips with a staple hammer (Image 2).
Staple the seam of the pad, alternating staples so that they aren't beside one another. Stretch the padding so that the pieces are butted tightly together.
Feel through the padding to locate the tackless strip, and use a utility knife to cut away the padding along the interior edge of the strip (Image 1) so that all the tacks are exposed (Image 2).
Measure the room at its longest point, and add 3" to the measurement. Take the carpet outside if possible, and notch the back on both sides at the appropriate length. The carpet will be easier to handle outside. You might want someone to help you.
Courtesy of Cary Wiedman
Roll the carpet with the back facing outward until the notched areas show. Then run a chalk line from notch to notch. Cut the back of the carpet along the chalk line, roll up the carpet, and take it back inside.

It is very important to find a good carpet installer. Installation is the most important, yet overlooked part of the job.
Here are some things a good installer can provide you with:
A few things you should know about the sub floor (the floor the carpet will be laid on):
Installation Costs: Carpet layers will generally have a minimum fee that will be charged if the job is too small. A minimum charge in the $75 to $100 range is reasonable.
The price you can expect to pay for carpet installation is approximately $5 per square yard (this will vary somewhat). Square yardage is calculated by multiplying the length (in feet) by the width (in feet) and then dividing by 9. Carpet layers may also charge extra for the following:
Carpet layers hired by you are solely responsible for their work. You will not have any recourse with the carpet retailer in the event that installation is not done properly (which is a good reason to use a big company like Cover All - see beolw).
