Shia LaBeouf 2014: A Timeline Of His Worst Year Ever, From Bizarre Behavior To Shocking Rape Allegations - November 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Its been a very strange year for a very strange man. After many incidents of bizarre behavior, Shia LaBeouf is now claiming he was the victim of a rape during his five-day art installation in Los Angeles in February.

The news broke in an interview the actor did with Dazed magazine, where he claims a woman took advantage of him during the performance piece that had him sitting silent with a bag over his head. None of LaBeoufs representatives has been willing to elaborate on the matter, according to USA Today.

Its been a tumultuous year for the former Transformers actor, who was caught plagiarizing his directorial debut Howard Cantour.com in 2013. Below is a timeline of the actors public behavior in 2014:

    Skywriter

The year kicked off with LaBeouf hiring a skywriter to etch the words, I am sorry Daniel Clowes into the sky above L.A., as noted by the Hollywood Reporter. Clowes is the graphic novelist whose work LaBeouf plagiarized in his film, as pointed out by Time magazine.

    Press Conference

At a press conference for his latest film Nymphomaniac, LaBeouf sat with his co-stars, who were answering questions about the movie. He remained silent until a reporter asked him a question about the numerous sex scenes in the production.

When seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea. Thank you very much, he said before walking out of the conference. The quotation is associated with soccer player Eric Cantona, BBC News reported.

    I Am Not Famous Anymore

LaBeouf made headlines again when he attendend the premiere of Nymphomaniac: Vol. I at the Berlin Film Festival wearing the now-infamous paper bag over his head that read I Am Not Famous Anymore, as recounted by Yahoo Movies. The act was jarring and caught the attention of many in the media who wondered why someone who isnt famous anymore would be on a red carpet.

The New Magic Carpet - November 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

We are long-term cyclists and ride our handy folding bikes a lot, both around Humboldt and beyond. Purists, we never thought we'd succumb to an electric bike. But last July, we surrendered and invested in one that we now share and love.

We walk as much as possible, and do most errands either on foot or bicycle. But there are times when cycling takes too much time, or is just plain unpleasant. Weekly trips from Eureka to Arcata on a bike would entail at least 40 minutes each way on the freeway. A trip through the Arcata Bottoms is lovely, but takes even longer.

When we visited Southeast Asia last year, the number of electric bikes in (usually flat) cities and towns was amazing. The most popular model was manufactured in Vietnam, cost around $500, and had a range of about 15 miles before recharging. Seeing all these quiet, economical bikes was inspiring, and once we were back home, all the notes from an Humboldt State University Osher Lifelong Learning Institute class on electric bikes came out and the online research began. The choices were daunting.

Complete bicycle or kit? That was pretty easy. We already had an old but very comfortable hybrid bike that we rarely used. Why pay for a bike when we already owned one? That narrowed the choices down, but there was still more to decide.

Power hub on the front or back wheel? From the rider's point of view, they feel much the same, so we went with the simpler front wheel replacement.

Automatic or manual control? A controller in most kits sends more or less power to the hub, depending on the effort exerted by the rider. It's the bike version of an automatic transmission in a car, and since both of us prefer stick-shifts, we went with manual control.

On-off switch or adjustable throttle? I read online that most users with throttles keep them at full, so we elected for the simplicity of an on-off thumb button on the handlebars.

Range? In order to cycle from Eureka to Arcata and back, we needed a battery with at least a 20-mile range.

Having gone through that decision tree, online reviews and comments convinced us that a Seattle-based company, Clean Republic, had solid value-for-money kits. For $800, we bought their "Hill Topper" kit consisting of a replacement front wheel, a 20-mile range Lithium-ion battery and on-off button. Their kits start at $400, for an 8-mile range.

Installation was pretty simple, although not the three-minute (!) conversion touted on the website, mainly because we had to file our bike's front forks to accept the new wheel's slightly wider axle, as well as add a couple of thick washers for a good fit. But the next day the bike was tooling along Waterfront Drive at 18 mph (according to our GPS) without pedaling. A week later, it made a 25-mile ride combining pedal and battery power, and came home with juice to spare. After an overnight charge, the bike was ready to go again.

Shia LaBeouf claims he was stripped and raped on Valentine's Day during #IAMSORRY installation - November 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The 28-year-old sat in silence for five days in a Los Angeles gallery wearing a brown paper bag on his head branded with the words, I AM NOT FAMOUS ANYMORE.

Red carpet: the actor wore the bag to the screening of Nymphomaniac Volume I (Picture: Patrik Stollarz/AFP/Getty Images)

In an email interview with Dazed Digital he told how the woman allegedly stripped and raped him on the third day.

He wrote: One woman came with her boyfriend, who was outside the door when this happened.

[She] whipped my legs for 10 minutes and then stripped my clothing and proceeded to rape me.There were hundreds of people in line when she walked out with dishevelled hair and smudged lipstick. It was no good, not just for me but her man as well.

He went on to explain that his partner Mia Goth - who was waiting in line outside when the incident occurred heard the news as it spread through the queue.

He wrote: It was Valentines Day and I was living in the gallery for the duration of the event.

    More Shia LaBeouf stories

We were separated for five days, no communication. So it really hurt her as well, as I guess the news of it travelled through the line.

When she came in she asked for an explanation, and I couldnt speak, so we both sat with this unexplained trauma silently. It was painful.

Lowe’s Carpet Installation Issues – University of Virginia - November 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

LOWE'S CARPET INSTALLATION ISSUES We ordered some very nice, plush wall-to-wall carpet from Lowe's (store #0517) in December 2008: three upstairs bedrooms and the adjoining hallway. On January 13, the contracted installer (Virginia Flooring of Orange, VA) arrived to install our new carpet.

In this page, I wanted to photo-document the specific issues that we have with the installation work:

We have been loyal Lowe's customers since becoming first-time-homebuyers, but this experience has left a sour taste. I commend Lowe's committment to customer satisfaction (and it has been very convenient having them on our side as a liason), but cannot recommend Virginia Flooring for carpet installation. If this installer is any sign of the quality of Lowe's Install Services, we are hesitent about using Lowe's for our upcoming kitchen counter/cabinet work.

(We were told by both Lowe's and the installer that the yarns would "blend together" over time. However, as shown below, they have not blended, nor will they ever blend together, for obvious reasons. The seams look much worse during daylight hours, when bedroom window light hits at acute angles.)

Although we had expected the installation process to leave some scuffs and scratches on the newly-painted baseboards (e.g., from the carpet-backing or the putty-knife/stair-tool used to tuck the carpet), we discovered that the installers had somehow exerted so much force on the baseboards that they now exhibit extensive cracking and nail-pops, as shown below. This new baseboard damage exists on virtually every wall, and is way beyond normal installation wear.

Real life reno': Making sacrifices - November 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

DWINDLING BUDGET: Downstairs is almost complete - but it hasn't left much in the bank for upstairs.

Carpet or wardrobes? Which could you live without?

As we head into the final stretches of the ground floor phase of the project (three bedrooms and one bathroom), it's looking increasingly likely that we're going to exhaust our original $100,000 budget without even getting started on the top floor.

The builder's warned us from the start that our budget wasn't enough, and we're beginning to realise just how short we were.

MOVING UP: And down. Finally having stairs has made life a lot easier for moving around the house.

The luxuries are long gone the skylight, new furniture and the indulgent curtains and now we're beginning to question which conventional parts of the home we can live without for a while.

A colleague of mine has, along with her husband and teenage sons, been living through a similar situation for the past few months since they had to stop their new-home build without a kitchen.

But rather than despair, they set up a table, where the main bench would go, stored their food in boxes instead of a pantry, have been cooking meals on BBQ, and generally loving their otherwise perfect home.

WALLS: When they go up, rooms start to take shape.

In the meantime, her husband has been constructing the kitchen himself out of solid pine in his spare time, complete with quality German draw runners, for a grand total of $1500.

Ohio couple fulfills plan, opens Wilmington hotel - November 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) Growing the Hotel Riverwalk took a year of planning, months of renovations and weekly trips from Ohio to Wilmington and back for Troy and Carla Reed. But with the eight-room hotels first month of business under their belts, the Reeds are starting to see all the time they put in pay off.

Troy, a lawyer, and Carla, whose background is in corporate retail, started looking seriously at the hospitality industry last year. The Ohio couple felt it was time for a change - in both profession and scenery.

They knew they wanted to be in a downtown setting, preferably somewhere warm. Though theyd never been to Wilmington, a property at 117 S. Second St. caught their attention while digging through online listings: the former site of the Clarendon Inn, which closed in 2012.

We came down and looked at it, and that was it, Carla said. You could see the potential. It just kind of checked off all the boxes that we had in our mind.

After closing on the property in February, the couple spent four months trading off between renovating the hotel in Wilmington and staying with their two sons in Ohio. Amid carpet installation and painting, they sent a son to college, put their house on the market and moved three states south with their younger son.

The result is a small boutique inn with eight rooms instead of Clarendons 11 - the Reeds live in a now-walled off part of the hotel. But they worked hard to make the rooms cozy and comfortable, bringing in new beds and flat-screen TVs, constructing a guest lounge and a grab-and-go breakfast area. Before it was the Clarendon, the circa-1950s building was a Catholic school, and the Reeds designed their space to balance its old-fashioned feel with modern amenities.

Were really trying to cater to folks that want to have a good experience in Wilmington, Troy said. Its a destination. We have everything that you would have at the Courtyard or different places; its just a different vibe.

Talk about hotel growth in Wilmington usually focuses on the six-story Courtyard Marriott that opened downtown this year, or the Embassy Suites planned for near the Convention Center. But smaller inns like Hotel Riverwalk account for a lot of business downtown.

According to numbers from the Wilmington and Beaches Convention & Visitors Bureau, small inns and bed and breakfasts add nearly 60 rooms to Wilmingtons unit total, mostly in the downtown Historic District. While the lions share of the nearly 4,600 hotel rooms in the city are in limited-service hotels and motels, boutique hotels meet a demand for upscale yet inexpensive spaces within walking distance of downtown.

In Hotel Riverwalks block are the Hotel Tarrymore, the Wilmingtonian and the Graystone Inn; Stemmermans Inn on Front Street is just a block away.
