The first thing you should do is climb a hill. In the town centre, an ancient hidden alley called ruelle Csar winds up behind old houses to emerge on a summit where you can look down on the old rooftops of Mons. This picturesque southern Belgian town has a population of just 93,000, but numbers are boosted in term time by students attending Mons university and the music conservatory.

Its easy to forget that Mons was once a mining town, because its now more like Silicon Hill. Internet search giant Google has built a huge data centre outside the town, creating a digital community among the abandoned pits. The locals have responded in their own way by creating mock Google street views of Mons, including one with two people paddling canoes down a Mons street pursued by police officers (launches 24 January at mons2015.eu/en/mons-street-review).

Mons locals are renowned for fighting a green dragon called Doudou. This strange ceremony, known as the Ducasse de Mons, has medieval origins and is held every year on the first Sunday after Pentecost (thats 31 May this year) on the main square. It involves men dressed in green leaves, a swinging dragons tail and a man representing Saint George, who kills Doudou with a single pistol shot.

The most stylish of recent European leaders comes from Mons. Local mayor Elio di Rupo became prime minister of Belgium on 6 December 2011 after the countrys record-breaking 541 days without a government. He transformed grey Belgian politics with his Italian charm, smart red bow tie and fondness for posing in swimming trunks. Now he is back running Mons.

The most impressive new work of modern art is a sprawling wooden structure in rue de Nimy, installed on 6 December by Arne Quinze. Called The Passenger, it hovers above a busy shopping street with blood-red struts brushing against the law courts. The street had to be closed off when the installation partly collapsed on 24 December, but the damaged parts have now been repaired.

Its hard to pick the strangest Mons event of 2015. Theres an opening ceremony on 24 January involving dancing robots, eight Finnish hot tubs, a re-enactment of the Woodstock festival and 18,000 people dressed in shiny aluminium ponchos (free, more details at mons2015.eu). But the organisers hope to hit another high in February when they reconstruct a traditional London working mens club inside an old school building named La Maison Folie. The aim of the four-day event (19-22 February) is to spice up Mons with a mix of British eccentricity and cutting-edge culture.

The organisers of Mons 2015 want you to get lost and discover unexpected places, so it is worth exploring the towns steep cobbled lanes, hidden gardens and secret courtyards. Along the way, you will come across art installations, pop-up bars, street art and a poetry installation on buildings stretching for 10 kilometres called The Phrase.

The biggest event in Mons year as cultural capital is the Van Gogh exhibition. It will take place in the newly renovated BAM museum (25 January-17 May, timed ticket 15), but dont come expecting starry nights or yellow sunflowers. The focus is on the period Van Gogh spent as a preacher among the poor mining communities of the Borinage, just south of Mons, with many of van Goghs early drawings, copies of paintings by other artists, and letters written to his brother, Theo.

The weirdest museum in Mons is the Mundaneum. It contains the remains of a vast collection of newspapers, posters, catalogues and curiosities gathered in the early 20th century by the Belgian philanthropist Paul Otlet. For years it lay forgotten in a Brussels underground car park until it was snapped up by Mons, housed in an empty department store and rebranded as the worlds first internet.

The most inspiring art gallery is located in a restored 18th-century building that once belonged to a carriage maker. Yvonne Legrands LArt Recration gallery at 72 rue de Nimy (no website) displays contemporary glassware on battered tables, ancient cabinets and salvaged wooden posts.

LAS VEGAS -- Seoul-headquartered "4D" cinema company CJ 4DPlex has inked a deal with AEG to install its first U.S.-based 4DX system at Regal Cinemas L.A. Live Stadium 14 in Los Angeles, which will be a 100-seat theater expected to be completed in late June or early July.

This timing would offer the possibility to launch with one of CJ 4DPlex's upcoming 4D titles such as DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon 2, which, along with Paramount's Noah, will be previewed in 4D this week in a demonstration during theater owners confab CinemaCon.

Also scheduled for 4DX-supported theaters are titles such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

In 2013, there were 58 titles mastered in the format, including Gravity, Frozen, Iron Man 3 and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Company execs said they aim to work with the filmmakers to create these experiences, which combine 3D with features such as motion, wind, strobe, fog, mist, rain and "scent-based" effects.

L.A. Live reps said the company had not yet determined what the surcharge will be for the 4D experience. Meanwhile, CJ 4DPlex plans to continue to target major U.S. cities for additional sites.

It currently has 91 theater installations in 23 countries, including Bulgaria, China, Chile, Czech Republic, Hungary, Japan, the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela.

It opened in Vietnam during January, and next month plans to debut in India and the Philippines.

With soiled carpet and water-soaked walls replaced, the first round of residents moved back into the Canal Senior Apartments Monday and everyone is expected to be back home by Christmas, staff says.

That is ahead of schedule and good news for dozens of residents who have been staying at a local hotel while construction crews frantically worked to get the three-story, low-income property back open following a small fire, which set off two sprinkler heads and flooded the complex with enough water to warrant ripping out nearly everything in one half of the building.

On Monday, 19 first floor residents moved back in with the help of the Senior Center and local volunteers. That floor received the least amount of damage with the sprinklers going off in a third floor apartment.

Art Martino was one of the first back in. A seven-year resident of the complex, Martino said despite the inconvenience of being displaced for more than a month, things have been going pretty good.

His biggest grievance Monday: his cable box and computer werent hooked up and he didnt know how to make sense of a ball of cables and cords left on his desk.

While a content company had boxed everything up, taking pictures of everyones rooms, meticulously labeling and storing items so things could be put back just as they were found, things werent perfect, but close to it.

Michele Bailey, property manager, said the content crew had put the books back in the order they were found in one apartment and managed to place dozens of small figurines in another units curio cabinet just so.

It is impressive, said Andrew Lasuen, a regional manager with Syringa Property Management, which offers low-income housing throughout the West.

Helping Martino get organized were two elders, Curtis and Anderson, from a local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The young men said several members of the church were helping residents move back in, helping in any way they could, even though neither knew much about cable box installation.

Going home

A FARMERS' market in Malvern town centre and a "magical" art exhibition at the Cube are among the attractions on the last weekend before Christmas.

The traditional famers market will be back tomorrow (Saturday, December 20) at Abbey Road, with a variety of stalls showcasing local food producers between 9am and 5pm.

And the Cube in Albert Road North is hosting the Carpet Forest, described as a "magical art installation where strangely shaped branches cast dappled light onto the forest floor while the song of birds can be heard high in the canopy".

Originally created as a one-off for The Kidderminster Arts Festival, it has since toured and comes to Malvern for Christmas.

Mal Salisbury, economic development officer at Malvern Hills, said: This is a great weekend to come and finish off that last-minute Christmas shopping and the festive season also sees The Carpet Forest providing a very intriguing artistic installation to enjoy and explore.

The Magic Forest is open from tomorrow (Saturday) until Tuesday from 11am to 4pm, and December 27-30, from noon to 4pm. Entry is free.
