5 important questions to ask before buying carpet - January 29, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

5 important questions to ask before buying carpet

By Kristen Price for Giant Carpet One

    January 28th, 2015 @ 10:02am

It may not last a lifetime, but a good piece of carpet can be a good investment nonetheless. Carpeting offers a warm, plush and colorful addition to your home one that is actually pretty easy to change out.

While manufacturers vary in the longevity of a carpets life, Angies List suggests replacing your carpet when it is stained, stinking, worn down or when you begin experiencing increased allergy symptoms.

Of course, if youve reached the maximum years of life for your particular brand, thats also a good indication that its time for new carpet. But before you replace that '70s shag with modern household swag, there are a few questions you should ask.

Most home improvement plans begin with a budget. Before you go out to shop for new carpet, its important to determine how much youre willing to spend and be realistic about it.

Once you have a budget in mind, you can compare and contrast various types of carpet and installation prices. Be sure to get quotes that list these costs separately so you can compare them easily.

It might be wise to choose different carpets for different rooms. For example, you may be willing to pay extra for stain-resistant carpet in the playroom, but you likely dont need to spend the extra money for it in the master bedroom.

When shopping for carpet, you could be tempted to skimp on padding; after all, no one sees it. But the padding you select for your carpet can actually make a big difference in the performance and longevity of your new flooring.

Attitash parties it up for No. 50 - January 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Fifty years ago this coming week, something big happened in Mount Washington Valley: Attitash Ski Area began spinning its lifts for the first time into a long history of success and improvements.

When Attitash opened in January 1965, it became known as the red carpet ski area, for its customer service and business philosophy of limiting lifts lines by limiting the number of tickets sold daily, an innovation in the industry back then.

Through the years, Attitash became known for not just that but its top-rated competitive racing program, which produced more than a few national and international contenders, its nationally known Red Parka Pub Ski Race each season, which draws the strongest local racers and some from all over as well, and of course, an active apres scene that filled the pub all winter and the outside lounge chairs each spring.

In the mid-1990s, Attitash dramatically increased the available skiing and riding acreage by developing the Bear Peak area that included the installation of a high-speed summit quad chairlift as well as open glades, wider intermediate terrain, some of the states most sought after alpine race trails, including the resorts signature trail, Illusion, and the Attitash Grand Summit Hotel.

Acquired by Peak Resorts in 2007, Attitash Mountain Resort continues to grow, yet holds onto that classic dedication to great skiing and a great vibe. With their sisterhood with nearby Wildcat Mountain, skiers and riders can now ski both resorts on the same day with the same lift ticket.

Attitash will be celebrating its 50th birthday on Jan. 26, and everyone is invited to the party.

To kick off the celebration, lift tickets will cost just $19.65 that day. (And in true family spirit, Wildcat will offer the same deal.) There will be a huge celebration and party in Ptarmigans Pub from 2-5 p.m. with live music from local favorites Shark Martin.

Everyone will be entered in a free raffle in which 50 prizes will be given away to celebrate 50 years, including special Attitash 50th anniversary T-shirts, gift cards, vertical value cards, summer ticket packs and one special Grand Prize.

Everyone will also take home a free commemorative poster and a special vintage Attitash logo die-cut sticker to add to your car or ski box.

More information on the celebration can be found at http://www.attitash.com.

Renovations underway at RCC - January 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

LUMBERTON Three rooms at Robeson Community College that will be used to provide health care students with life simulation training will be operating within two months, according to college Vice President Channing Jones.

Jones told the colleges board of trustees Monday that the rooms where state-of-the-art mannequins will be used to give students hands-on training should be open as early as next month and no later than March.

The $250,000 in renovations are being funded through a $25 million grant RCC is sharing with five other community colleges. The Better Occupational Outcomes with Simulated Training grant is provided through the U.S. Department of Labor.

Other renovations under way at the college include roofing on Building 8, located on RCCs main campus, and carpet installation in the administration building. According to Vice President Alphonso McRae, 50 percent of the new carpet will be installed this weekend and the rest on Jan. 25 and Jan. 26.

In other business, the trustees on Monday:

Heard a brief enrollment update from Pamela Hilbert, the colleges president. Although the spring semester figures are not final, Hilbert said it appears that spring enrollment will be about 1,725 students, down from the fall enrollment of 1,900 students.

This is the national trend, Hilbert said. Undergraduate enrollments are down at colleges and universities across the country except in metropolitan areas.

According to Hilbert, RCC is trying to recruit new students and maintain those already attending. A committee has been formed, she said, to improve marketing efforts.

Heard a brief report about the colleges chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. The presentation was made by Shamella Cromartie and Louis McIntyre, RCC staff chapter advisers, and RCC student Darious Johnson, the chapters president.

Phi Theta Kappa is an honor society for community college students. To be a member a student must have a 3.5 grade- point average or higher. Currently, there are 28 members of the society on campus at RCC.

Floormasters Launches Public-Private Partnership to Support Trade Skill Training Program for Northern California Job … - January 12, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Hayward, CA (PRWEB) January 12, 2015

Floormasters, Inc. today announced the launch of a new training program for job seekers throughout Northern California. The first training session will be held in San Joaquin County in partnership with San Joaquin County Office of Education, Human Service Agency, Housing Authority of San Joaquin, Habitat for Humanity of San Joaquin, California Human Development, San Joaquin County WorkNet, Neighborworks, Visionary Homebuilders, and YouthBuild San Joaquin. Floormasters is working with several other counties and, conducting outreach to others, to make this program available across Northern California. Participants will receive apprentice-level training for installing both hard-surface flooring and carpet. Qualified participants will be eligible for full-time installer positions with the Floormasters team in Hayward, Peninsula, North Bay, Tri-County, East Bay, San Francisco, Greater Sacramento as well as Napa, Yolo, El Dorado, San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties. Training will be led by Floormasters at no cost to participants or the partner organizations. All materials have been donated by Floormasters partners, including Armstrong, Bigelow, De Soto Diamond W, Engineered Floors, Gallaher, Leggett and Platt, Mannington, Mohawk, Osborne Lumber and Patcraft.

Training programs are an important part of the services that San Joaquin County offers, said Chris Kleinert, director at San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE). We are excited about the opportunities that this program will open up to local job seekers. The Floormasters program not only provides job seekers with an opportunity to learn a trade, but also gives them a chance to secure a full-time job at the end of the training with a competitive salary and fully paid healthcare.

The Floormasters training program is a great example of how public-private partnerships create exponential value, said John Solis, executive director at San Joaquin County WorkNet. Everyone wins. The County adds a high-quality course to its education offerings; job seekers have an opportunity to learn a trade and secure a job; and the corporate partners gain access to a new pool of skilled labor.

Community involvement has always been a priority for Floormasters, said Don Lau, president and chief executive officer of Floormasters, Inc. In addition to working with a number of organizations to support affordable housing programs, we are committed to providing opportunities for local job seekers. This training program gives us an opportunity to reach a wider group and helps them learn a trade in a space that is understaffed and develop skills that will allow them to earn a good salary.

Details about the Floormasters Installer Training Program The Floormasters Installer Training Program will consist of classroom instruction for two weeks followed by hand-on training the third week. Participants will work on installations at five units for an affordable housing non-profit organization, Visionary Home Builders. Training will focus on core competencies and best practices for flooring installation, including:

Apprentice-level hard surface installation training for vinyl and VTC tile

    Apprentice-level carpet installation training
