MONEY Everyday Money Hollywood The Big Dollar Figures Behind Hollywoods Biggest Night Adam TaylorABC via Getty Images At this Sunday's Academy Awards, all the glitz and glamour of Hollywood will be on displayat a price, of course.
The 87th Academy Awards, being held on February 22, is heavy on film nominees that were made on (relatively) small budgets, with (relatively) meager box office grosses to match. Even so, like any Oscars, a small fortune will be spent on the buildup to this years awards ceremony, as well as the big night itself.
Heres a breakdown of some of the big and small dollar amountsOK, mostly BIGbehind the Academy Awards.
1: Number of 2015 Best Picture nominees to earn more than $100 million at the box office, in whats shaping up as an especially blockbuster-light Oscars ceremony. Clint Eastwoods war drama American Sniper walks away with the honor, but it hardly compares to Avatar, which earned a whopping $2.8 billion in 2010, the highest on record for any BP nominee. Ironically, Avatar lost out to The Hurt Locker, which is the lowest-grossing movie to win Best Picture, pulling in only $14.7 million at the box office before the awards.
$400: The surprisingly low estimate for what one of the Oscar statuettes is actually worth. Mind you, an Oscar isnt solid gold but is merely gold-plated. Besides, the real value comes with the name connected to the statue: Joan Crawfords only Oscar, which she received for her performance in Mildred Pierce, sold at auction for $426,732 in 2012, while Orson Welles Best Screenplay Oscar for Citizen Kane sold for $861,542 at auction in 2011.
$25,000 $30,000: The cost of the much-hyped 16,500-square-foot red carpet that Hollywood stars stroll down before the Oscars, according to Red Carpet Systems in Los Angeles. (Installations included in the figure.)
$85,000: The per-ticket price scalpers were trying to command by selling seats to the awards show in 2008. Since attendees sign a contract that prohibits them from selling or even giving away their seats, scalped Oscar tickets are all but unheard of today.
$125,000: The value of the swag bag given to Academy Award nominees in 2015. Besides lavish vacations and accessories, this years bag includes a $20,000 gift certificate to have Olessia Kantor, the founder of Enigma Life, meet with the nominees to discuss their 2015 horoscopes, analyze their dreams and teach them mind control techniques.
$500,000 vs. $3.9 million: Hollywood agents estimate that winning an Oscar results in a pay increase of about 20% for the performers next project. However, much like in the real world, theres reportedly a notable gender wage gap. Actors can expect a $3.9 million increase, on average, while actresses may only take home an extra $500,000.
$1.9 million: The cost of a 30-second commercial airing during this years TV broadcast of the awards ceremony.

You may be able to find carpet remnants at a discount to install in a small room.
Installing carpet in a small room is a quick way to brighten the space. Whether you choose a plush pile to accent contemporary furnishings or a subdued Berber-style carpet to match a traditional decor, your Bay Area home will be revitalized by the carpet installation. A small room is particularly easy to carpet, because you dont need to seam it. Specialized tools that you can rent, such as a knee kicker, also help simplify the installation process.
Take everything out of the room. Pull up floor heating vents.
Remove the existing flooring, following all local guidelines for disposal. If you suspect the old flooring contains asbestos, hire a professional to remove it. Clean the subfloor with a broom or shop vacuum. Secure any loose nails or screws.
Inspect the floor for any uneven spots. Apply flooring compound to uneven floors, as necessary, with a wide-bladed putty knife or drywall knife, following manufacturers directions. Allow the flooring compound to dry according to manufacturer's directions.
Remove quarter round from the perimeter of the room. Pry it off carefully with a pry bar so you can reattach it later.
Measure and cut tackless strips 1/4 to 1/2 inch away from the perimeter of the walls. Do not install them in doorways. Place the strips so the tacks face toward the wall. There shouldnt be any gaps between strips. Set the strips in place with nails set every 8 to 10 inches.
Place padding in the room so that the padding touches but does not cover the tackless strips. Cut padding, as necessary, with a utility knife. Do not overlap padding pieces or leave any gaps. Join seams with duct tape.
Measure the length and width of the room. Add 6 inches to each dimension.
Unroll the new carpet in another room of the house. Mark the dimensions -- including the 6 inches extra for each dimension -- on the carpet with chalk lines. Cut pile carpet on its back and other carpet from the front, using a straightedge tool to help you cut straight lines.

Bob Hope Airports Terminal A will be getting new carpet, but the installation work will be scheduled for nighttime hours to avoid inconveniencing passengers.
The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority last month approved a contract for the first phase of the work, which is estimated to cost around $220,000 and will begin in roughly two months. The last time the carpet was replaced in the terminal building was about 15 years ago in 2000, according to a staff report.
This week, airport staff also updated the commission on the project in response to Pasadena Commissioner Terry Torneks request for more information on the per-square-yard cost of the work.
I install a lot of carpet, Tornek said last month. Thats a big number.
The first of two phases calls for replacement of the carpet in the terminals main entrance, ticket counter area and the hallway leading to the security screening point. It is expected to be completed by the close of the airports fiscal year on June 30.
Airport staff had solicited bids for the first phase and received two responses. Reliable Floor Covering Inc. of Westlake Village was the lowest bidder and was awarded the contract.
Dan Feger, the airport's executive director, said last month that recarpeting the airport has historically run around $40 per square yard installed, for a variety of reasons, including the much more difficult requirements of the work.
This week, airport staff provided a more comprehensive update on the costs in response to Torneks request, which showed costs were significantly higher than those rates in the past, based on the contract cost divided by the surface area.
Bob Anderson, the airports director of engineering and planning, said the lowest bid for project in 2011 to replace all of the carpet in Terminal A was $630,000 around $72 per square yard which was deemed too expensive.
In light of economic conditions and a decrease in passenger traffic at the time, the airport instead replaced only the carpet in the most heavily trafficked section of the airport, the center hallway in the east concourse, which cost $90.74 per square yard, or roughly $240,000.

New carpeting slated for airport terminal
I've never been to Portland, but I've seen the airport's carpet a million times. If you asked me to draw a picture of the delightfully geometric 80s design, I could probably do it with my eyes closed. How, you wonder? Hipsters. That's how.
Hipsters just love that blue-green carpet at the Portland International Airport (PDX). The 25-year-old design has been spun off into so many clothing lines and social media accounts, you could call the PDX carpet a hipster icon. Not for long, though. Last month, airport officials began ripping up the 14 acres of stained, fraying fabric that cover the terminal floors and replacing it with a curvier new design. And the hipsters are pissed.
Over two decades before Portlandia introduced the world to the inside jokes of the Pacific Northwest paradise, Portland was a sleepy city. But it was also gearing up for a renaissance, a reinvention that would turn the old trading post in Mount Hood's shadow into a city fit for the 21st-century. To make this possible, the airport would need to get bigger.
In the 1980s, the Portland International Airport underwent a series of renovations and expansions that would eventually yield two new new concourses, moving sidewalks, and a small shopping mall. All of this new floorspace would need new carpet, so airport officials hired SRG Partnership for the job. The local architecture and design firm quietly decided to draw inspiration from the airports X-shaped runways as seen from the control tower. The dark blue, purple, and red pattern on a teal-colored background reflected the popular design trends of the time, though it hardly seemed like would become so timeless.
Workers laid 28,000 square feet of the iconic carpet throughout PDX's terminals in 1987. Jon Schleuning, the founding partner of SRG Partnership, had designed the glitchy look with the help of his colleague Laura Hill. (Hill recently wrote about the design process.) The team got lots of compliments on the design at the time of the installation, but they never expected it to develop a cult following.
But the airport expansion foreshadowed a much more ambitious plan for Portland. A year after the new carpet was glued to the floors of PDX, the city's Bureau of Planning adopted an ambitious initiative called the Central City Plan. The near 200-page plan aimed to "guide the Central City into the 21st-century" by boosting the economy and spurring smart growth. That meant preserving the Mount Hood corridor, expanding retail and office space downtown, extending the Light Rail system, and building a huge new convention center. In effect, Portland was preparing for a huge influx of visitorsand hopefully residents, too.
For a complicated set of reasons, Portland's wish came true. With the 9os came the dot com boom and a massive explosion of computer-related industries throughout the city. This meant that there were lots of jobs for young developers and, more importantly, young graphic designers. It didn't hurt that Portland's rent was cheap or that the city was surrounded by natural splendor. All things considered, Portland was one of the hottest cities of the 90s in terms of growth.

There arent enough online tools to help users find out what their home improvement project might costso Im building the best ones out there, says 35 year old self proprietor Jason Kilgore.
Thats the idea behind http://InstallationCalculator.com, a new online creation to help homeowners who want to know how expensive their new floor, fence, or remodel could be. InstallationCalculator.com launched in June of 2014, and since that time Kilgore along with help and feedback from over 50 contractors nationwide formulated an algorithm to take in relevant data points, and spit out the most accurate flooring calculation that could be found anywhere.
We take it all into account, says Kilgore, "from the regional average cost of materials; whether tile, hardwood, carpet, laminate, etc; or the average local cost of labor for installation of that flooring material. Now that the flooring calculator is complete, next on deck is fence repair and installation, then the beast of remodeling.
Kilgore built the proprietary algorithm from scratch. Having the reputation of a computer geek, he spends much of his time off building and developing PHP programs. A few months ago, his hobby turned into an actual business opportunity. Seeing the number of people out there searching the web for how much their home improvement might cost, he decided to spent the bulk of his savings in research and development to generate a useful user engagement tool. Of course, being in competition with large home improvement retailers is challenging, however the online tools their sites mainly focus on are for materials costs only and thereby leave their users somewhat in the dark as to how much installation itself might cost.
Patricia Allspaugh, a user of the site, says, It was so simple and accurate. I talked with a local contractor who gave me an estimate, but their total sounded too high. Sure enough, after using the calculator I found out that they were charging three prices for the labor. Im so grateful I found InstallationCalculator.com. I saved over $3,000 in the span of a few minutes.
The flooring calculator can be found at http://flooring.installationcalculator.com, the fence calculator at http://fence.installationcalculator.com, and the kitchen remodeling calculator at http://kitchen.installationcalculator.com.

STOP! Read Entire Instruction Sheet Before Starting!
Do not cut the carpet until you are sure the auto carpet is correct for your Automobile!
For additional install instructions you can print or read this document (Adobe Acrobat is required)
Remove your new automobile carpet from the box, unroll and lay the carpet in a warm area and allow it to settle for one to two hours before attempting to install. This will allow the automobile carpet to regain its molded shape. Using your hand, you can push the contoured sections of your new carpet back to their molded position. Keep in mind, the carpet may have wrinkles that do not relax completely before being installed, and the molded contours in the carpet may look flattened from shipping; this is normal. After being installed properly, the carpet will regain and hold its molded shape.
It is very important that you verify your new auto carpet now, before you begin the installation. Once you begin to cut your new carpet, it may no longer be returnable, so now is the time to verify that the carpet you received is the correct item for your vehicle.
The easiest way to verify your new carpet is to lay it overtop of your old carpet and line up the molded contours of both carpets. Keep in mind, the new carpet has just been shipped in a box and it will have some wrinkles that have not relaxed and some of the molded contours will look flattened. This is normal and should not be mistaken as a manufacturing problem. After being installed properly, the carpet will regain and hold its molded shape. If your old auto carpet is not available, you can also "dry-fit" the carpet to your vehicle's floor pan.
At this point, if the contours in your new carpet in a different location than the contours in your old carpet, do not continue with your installation.
