: During her initial years in England, artist Mona Hatoum made several installations dwelling on the harshness of Londons low-income housing setting and on the prevailing surveillance regime.
However, these were terribly misread by some onlookers for the architecture of Palestinian refugee camps. Such reductive readings stemmed from their prejudiced look at the works through the prism of my background. In fact, there is nothing systematic about Palestinian refugee camps which rose organically, says Ms. Hatoum, bearing a hyphenated identity. Ms. Hatoum was born in Lebanon to Palestinian parents, but chose to live in London.
She fiercely dispels notions of her work having a direct connection with her biography, maintaining she doesnt try to illustrate anything as that is restrictive and renders the works one-dimensional.
If you look at my career that spans over 35 years, there are only a handful of works that speak directly about my background like the video Measures of Distance (1988) based on the letters exchanged between myself [in London] and my mother [back home in Lebanon]. Its quite a complex, layered video with many issues, very much trying to contradict the stereotypes that are usually put on Arab woman as mother and therefore, a non-sexual being. They were intimate conversations, therefore called Measures of Distance , the artist, whose installation, Undercurrents is on show at the ongoing Kochi-Muziris Biennale, told The Hindu in an interview.
I think the language of art is very abstract; its slippery and the meaning can go one way or the other. It can mean different things to different people. Her works doubtless are informed by her experience, but they just happen and remain open-ended.
Undercurrents , for instance, has a carpet in the middle, from which cloth-covered electric wires grow out in a circle like tentacles with pulsating electric bulbs on the fringes.
It has an undercurrent of malevolence about it. An inanimate thing, it transforms into an animate Medusa-like creature, uncanny, and offers an unnerving experience, she says.
On another level, it incites a sense of trepidation to realise that the whole thing is electrified, that theres electricity under your feet. It gives a feeling of being on unstable, shaky ground, she says. Adept at choosing household objects to embody amorphous unsettling issues, Ms. Hatoum had made a metal cradle as part of In Communicado hinting at the issues of child abuse (whether you are with the victim or perpetrator inspires your perception of the work, she says) and created an electrified kitchen table full of wired utensils to suggest imprisonment in domestic chores, caged-existence of women and the dangers lurking in the domestic environment in works like Home and Homebound .

Beyond shackles of biography and geography

Follow us on LinkedIn The demand for carpets and rugs is largely reliant on housing renovation and new residential construction activity. Carpets find use in residential as well as commercial buildings as floor dcor and performance floor coverings. A key factor driving the adoption of carpets includes its ability to add aesthetic appeal to the interiors of a building and offer thermal and acoustic insulation benefits. Use of carpets is therefore high in countries with extremely cold climatic conditions. Carpets also provide safety, as the texture of the fabric protects children and senior citizens from falls and enhances comfort while walking as compared to bare flooring. Carpets come in a wide range of colors and textures, with most of them tufted or woven using polyester, nylon or other synthetic materials. The rise in energy costs worldwide is driving the emphasis on thermal insulation. Against this backdrop, demand for carpet underlay is growing strongly. Insulation of homes ensures greater resistance to heat flow by slowing the process of flow of heat through the building envelope. The more the heat flow resistance, the lower will be the cooling and heating costs. Good insulation material conserves ambient heat and significantly cuts down on heating energy requirements and is therefore the key to achieving energy efficiency.
Carpets are therefore witnessing strong preference as compared to substitutes such as engineered hardwood, laminate or ceramic tile. The use of wall-to-wall carpets increases the insulation level of the carpet area, resulting in savings in utility costs. Therefore, technology developments in material science that help enhance insulation properties of carpet fibers will benefit the market. With growing consumer preference for soft padded floors, demand for carpets made from soft handed fibers is witnessing strong growth, especially in the residential sector. Carpet tiles are also witnessing strong demand worldwide, given their ease and speed in installation, higher economic value due to reduced costs as a result of lower wastage during installation, and availability of better design options. Synthetic carpets, particularly those made from fibers derived from polyester, polypropylene and nylon dominate the global carpets market. Although currently taking a major share of the market, nylon is expected to continue to lose sheen due to the growing demand for low cost polyester options. A promising development currently underway in the market is nanotechnology based molecular carpet weaving. Also expected to witness strong demand are eco-friendly carpets made from natural, biodegradable renewable fibers like sisal.
As stated by the new market research report on Carpets and Rugs, Tufted Carpets represents the largest product market. The United States and Europe constitute the leading markets worldwide, supported by their cold climatic conditions. Future growth in the market is forecast to come from developing markets. Asia-Pacific ranks as the fastest growing market worldwide with a CAGR of 4.5% over the analysis period, led by factors such as, rapid urbanization, expanding base of middle class population & a parallel rise in demand for well provisioned houses, lifestyle upgrades & increased spending on home furnishings and interiors, and robust demand for decorative rugs.
Major players covered include Atlas Carpet Mills, Axminster Carpets Limited, Balta Group, Beaulieu of America, Beaulieu Canada, Brintons Carpets Limited, Cormar Carpets, Desso Group, Dream Weaver Carpet, Heckmondwike FB, Hokanson Carpets, ICE International, Interface, Inc., J+J Flooring Group, Masland Contract, J&J Flooring, Mohawk Industries, Nobel Carpets, Oriental Weavers Group, Scott Group Custom Carpets, Inc., Shaw Industries Group Inc., Tandus Flooring, Tarkett, Thomas Witter Carpets, Victoria Carpets Pty. MORRISON, Colo. (CBS4) An investigation by 60 Minutes found the countrys largest seller of hardwood flooring may be using products that dont meet health and safety standards. Some of Lumber Liquidators cheaper laminate flooring contains high levels of formaldehyde, a known cancer-causing chemical.
Dr. Philip Landrigan, of NYsMt. Sinai Hospital explained,Its not a safe level. Its a level that the US EPAcalls polluted indoor conditions.
Those laminate floor pieces were being installed into Gerry Smiths home in Morrison, but now her contractor has stopped the job before its finished due to health and liability concerns.
Were re-doing all the carpet that was in the home, said contractor John Guinn, and theres about 1100 square feet of this laminate flooring. Its a project that would ordinarily take three weeks to finish.

Smith bought the flooring from lumber liquidators, cost wise, it was perfect. I got it on sale.
But two weeks in, things are at a standstill because the laminate flooring pieces may be highly toxic.
My first concern is liability with the homeowner. My liability issue. What am I liable for? said Guinn.
Using hidden cameras, 60 Minutes investigators went to three Chinese mills that make laminate flooring for Lumber Liquidators.
Employees openly admitted their laminates are not compliant with health and safety standards.Employees also admitted they falsely label boxes, like those now sitting in Smiths living room.

A pioneer in the development of innovative aircraft cabin lighting technologies, STG Aerospace is delighted to announce that it has received STC approvals from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for its next generation, photoluminescent, emergency floorpath marking system. safTglo SuperSeal UltraLite (SSUL) is now FAA and EASA approved for Airbus 320 and EASA approved for Boeing 747, 757 and 737 airplanes.
STG Aerospace first launched safTglo in 1995. With its unique, patented fully-sealed design that eliminates fluid ingress, safTglo is a low-cost, low-weight improvement over electrical emergency systems that can reduce maintenance costs by up to 80%.
Hard wearing and long lasting, it requires no power source and can be easily retrofitted to almost any aircraft. Indeed, it has been approved and certified for installation on virtually every aircraft type and is the emergency floor path system of choice for over 300 global airlines and 9,000 aircraft worldwide.
SuperSeal UltraLite (SSUL) represents the next generation safTglo product, and incorporates the same benefits of previous designs but is 70% lighter - helping to reduce airline fuel costs - and 17% brighter.
The highest performing photoluminescent floorpath marking system available in the market today, safTglo SSUL features a reduced profile, making it an optimal match for modern light weight carpets, and a one-piece design with no end caps which means that it can be easily cut to length and sealed during installation.
With over 300 colour options and a unique pattern matching service available, safTglo SSUL enables airlines to achieve aesthetically pleasing, co-ordinated cabin interiors in line with their corporate branding without reducing safety. In addition, carpet edges can be concealed with the OverCarpet polycarbonate housing option that features a hinged-wing design and removes the need for carpet binding - saving additional cost and enhancing even further the appearance of the cabin.
Nigel Duncan, CEO of STG Aerospace, commented: "Obtaining these STC approvals for safTglo SSUL is excellent news for us and for the airlines. As an innovator of light in the aircraft passenger cabin, STG is expanding the boundaries of lighting technology to help OEMs, airlines and MROs meet new challenges.
"SSUL is another great example of this. Building on the outstanding success of our existing safTglo product range, we have been able to develop a market-changing emergency lighting solution. safTglo SSUL brings even more benefits to airlines setting a new standard in emergency lighting performance, while meeting the latest and most critical regulatory requirements."
