Black Carpet Beetle Department of Entomology Penn … - October 23, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Attagenus unicolor (F)

The black carpet beetle is a common carpet beetle in Pennsylvania. The larvae eat almost any type of animal product such as leather, wool, silk, feathers, hair, dried meat, dead insects, and even dried plant material. The black carpet beetle is a pest in kitchen cupboards, as well as in woolen carpets or clothes storage areas.

The adult is 2.8 to 5 mm long, black to reddish brown and covered with short, sparse pubescence (Fig. 1). The first segment of the tarsi of the hind legs is much shorter than the second segment. The last antennal segment of the male is twice as long as that of the female.

The larvae of the black carpet beetle, which may reach 12.7 mm in length, are very different from other carpet beetles larvae. They are elongate, carrot-shaped, golden to chocolate brown, and have a tuft of very long, curled, golden-brown hair at the tail end of their body.

Figure 1. Drawing of adult black carpet beetle

Female black carpet beetle --- Image by Steve Jacobs

Male black carpet beetle --- Image by Steve Jacobs

The small, pearly-white egg can be deposited in the lint around baseboards, in the ductwork of hot-air furnace systems, on wool clothing in storage, and in similar protected locations. The egg hatches in 6 to 11 days in warm weather, but may require an additional 5 to 16 days under cooler conditions.

The newly hatched larvae scavenge for food (they will eat dander, hair, and other small bits of food high in protein), avoid light, and move so slowly that they appear to be gliding. At room temperature, the larval life span ranges from 258 to 639 days. This variation is due largely to fluctuations in temperature, food quality, and relative humidity. The larvae may molt 5 to 11 times, and up to 20 times when conditions are unfavorable. The larval skins often are mistaken for the larvae themselves. The larvae pupate in the last larval skin, and the pupal period may extend from 6 to 24 days. The beetles may remain in the partially shed pupal skin from 2 to 20 days before emerging. Black carpet beetles usually overwinter in the larval stage.

Adults may live from 2 weeks to several months, but never damage household goods in this stage. Unlike the larvae, they are attracted to light. They are active and often can be found around windows and outdoors on flowers, eating the pollen. The females commence egg laying on the larval food materials or in dark secluded places less than one week after emergence. A female can lay from 42 to 114 eggs, and averages around 50; she generally dies a few days after oviposition.

The adults are attracted to flowers, and in the spring of the year they may fly into the house. The larvae may wander from the nest into the attic and other parts of the house. At times, birds and other animals die in chimneys and elsewhere in the house and their carcasses become a source of food for the larvae. Very often, the black carpet beetles are brought into the house with old woolens and carpeting. Sometimes the black carpet beetles are introduced into a dwelling in stored products such as dried dog food.

It is not uncommon to find one or two black carpet beetles in a house. An occasional black carpet beetle larva probably is not an indication of a serious problem; however, if you regularly encounter large numbers of larvae or adults, find the source of the infestation and institute the following control measures.

Successful control depends on locating the source of the infestation. It may be a woolen toy stored in the basement, soiled woolen socks in boots, a felt hat on a shelf, carcasses of birds or other animals, dead insects in walls or attic, bits of dried dog food, or similar materials. If you find the infested material, either clean it or destroy the item.

Where the beetles are widespread and no point source of infestation is found, you may apply one of the various insecticides and chemical formulations that are available for carpet beetle control. Diatomaceous earth and silica aerogel that cause insects to lose moisture are known as desiccants. Apply them as a dust to cracks and crevices or inject them into wall voids. They are only effective if they remain dry, and work best where water sources are eliminated or reduced. You can apply synthetic pyrethroids such as deltamethrin, cyfluthrin, lambda-cyhalothrin, cypermethrin, sumithrin, or tralomethrin to cracks as a water-based spray. When injected into dark crevices, the materials have a longer period of efficacy because they are not in direct sunlight. Crevices where lint, hair, and food particles have accumulated are places likely to be infested by carpet beetles.

Pesticides are poisonous. Please read and follow the directions and safety precautions on the labels. Handle them carefully and store them in their original labeled containers out of the reach of children, pets, and livestock. Dispose of the empty containers right away, in a safe manner and place. Do not contaminate forage, streams, and ponds.

Carpet: Construction and Demolition Waste Reduction - October 2, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Construction and Demolition Recycling

This page provides technical information on carpet recycling. Given that carpet pad is typically used with broadloom carpets, some information is also provided on carpet pad recycling. By reusing or recycling your used carpet pads and carpets you may reduce overall disposal costs, save landfill space, and help achieve the diversion goals of your city or county.

For information on AB 2398, the carpet stewardship law and the California Carpet Stewardship Plan, visit the Carpet EPR Program Overview webpage.

Synthetic fibers make up more than 99 percent of the fiber used by the United States carpet industry. Each fiber has strengths and weaknesses that must be recognized and should influence how it is to be used and constructed. The following fibers, in order of importance, are used in the production of carpets:

Contamination is the primary reason why recyclable scrap carpet does not get recycled. Some contamination comes from careless handling of carpet during its removal, when other demolition debris ends up in the load. Carpet tack strips and nails are common and serious contamination problems because a piece of metal will tear up recycling equipment. A magnet might help, but not for bits of stainless steel or aluminum.

Other contaminants that are not easily removed and can make carpet unrecyclable include paint and drywall mud. Carpet must not be contaminated with body fluids, chemical or pharmaceutical contaminants, and asbestos.

Excessive moisture also impedes carpet recycling. It makes carpet heavier and interferes with fiber-testing devices and other machinery not to mention the potential for moist carpet to contain mold or mildew. Collectors must protect old carpet and pads from rain and snow by using closed containers and overhangs.

Carpet rolled, with fiber side out, cut in 6 foot widths, is ideal for processing.

The following websites have more information on carpet collection:

Recyclers use near-infrared spectroscopic analyzers (aka laser gun) to determine the carpet fiber type because each requires a different processing technique. These analyzers are expensive and are therefore mainly used by carpet processors. The following websites have further information on fiber analyzers:

Habitat for Humanity, which accepts like-new construction materials for affordable housing, is one organization that may find use for good reusable carpet, although it may require a minimum carpet quantity of about 800 square feet. Habitat for Humanity is listed in your local phone directory.

CalRecycle's California Materials Exchange (CalMAX) portal helps businesses find markets for materials traditionally discarded, including carpet and pad.

When it comes to recycling, not all carpets are created equal. Some are much more readily reused or recycled than others. In particular, carpets made from nylon are highly valued by recyclers. However, as nylon carpets sales decrease are supplanted with polyester or other less valuable materials, it makes the economics of carpet recycling more challenging.

Carpet cushion (carpet padding) is the foundation for every residential carpet installation. The following are different types of carpet cushion:

You can send your rebond carpet pad to foam recyclers in your area. Recyclers may pay for used rebond foam pad. A number of these pad recyclers are also listed in CalRecycle's list of carpet and pad recyclers. Check your local directory for listings of other pad recyclers (check under "Recycling Centers").

Below are requirements and best management practice guidelines to assist those handling or storing carpet:

Used carpets may be recycled to make new carpet or as a component to produce other products such as auto parts, carpet pad, plastic lumber and parking stops.

How to Install Wall-To-Wall Carpeting | Video | This Old House - August 16, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

In this video, This Old House host Kevin O'Connor explains how to install wall-to-wall carpet, including how to handle seams.

    Steps:

1 Remove old carpet and padding from room; vacuum the subfloor clean. 2 Nail down an extra tack strip alongside the original tack strips. 3 Spread padding adhesive onto floor along the walls and at all seams. 4 Set padding down on subfloor and secure seams with duct tape. 5 Roll carpeting across the room. 6 Cut carpeting to fit around wall corners. 7 When seaming two pieces of carpeting, use a cushion-back cutter to trim the carpeting edges. 8 Apply latex seam sealer to carpet edges, let dry. 9 Align the seams between carpeting pieces, then slip piece of seam tape underneath. 10 Activate the adhesive tape with a seaming iron. 11 Use knee kicker to hook edge of carpeting onto the tack strips. 12 Force carpeting down onto tack strip with stair chisel. 13 Trim excess carpeting along wall with double-blade wall trimmer. 14 Use knee kicker and stair chisel to force rough-cut carpet edge into space between tack strip and baseb ard. 15 Employ a power stretcher to pull carpet tight across floor; stretch carpeting toward each wall. 16 Secure the carpeting at doorways with transition molding.

Flooring Installation – American Carpet Wholesalers - August 16, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Installation is the most critical step to insure the overall performance and appearance of your new floor. You should contract a floor covering installer much like you would a building contractor. A reliable installer should carry insurance, both liability and workmen's compensation. At ACW, we want to help you find the best installer available. We offer these guidelines to help you make a more informed decision on selecting your installer:

1: The first and best way is through referral. Possibly a friend or relative, maybe even your builder, has had floor covering installed recently. Even if this option is available, get more references and verify them. Possibly even look at more of their work.

2: The second way and could very well be a first choice is to call the CFI (Certified Floor Covering Installers) for a referral. They will furnish phone numbers for independent certified installers in your area. Certified installers usually charge a bit more but will follow all the guidelines set forth by the Carpet and Rug Institute.

3: The third way is to check your local yellow pages under the listing "Carpet and Rug - Installers". Again, we can't stress enough, the importance of referral and verification.

You can receive a copy of installation guidelines (commercial or residential) form the Carpet and Rug Institute. http://www.carpet-rug.com

Carpet Installation – The Carpet Site - August 16, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

So you've decided to install carpeting yourself. Good for you. Not too many people are brave enough to tackle home renovations on their own, but you obviously realize how much money can be saved (and how much can be learned) but installing carpeting on your own rather than hiring a contractor.

Be sure to keep in mind that some DIY carpet installation jobs are easier than others and are more suitable for the home handyman who's willing to tackle the job himself. How can you tell if your job will be easy or difficult? Here are a few things to consider:

Before you get started, you'll want to make sure that you have all the equipment you'll need on hand. There's nothing more frustrating that realizing that you don't have that one tool that you need. Here's a list of the stuff you'll want to gather up from around your home before you begin:

You'll also have to rent some tools, since most people don't have carpeting equipment just lying around. You'll need:

Once you've collected all the tools you'll need, you're ready to go. The first step is to prepare the floor for the new carpet. This means removing the old carpet (if there is one). Next, you will want to lay down the underpad. Finally, you will lay the new carpet on top of the underpad. Always overlap the edge of the floor by about five inches (the excess carpeting can be trimmed later).
