Ever since anyone can remember, America has had a love affair with muscle cars. After all, the concept is uniquely American. Over the years, some muscle cars have fared better than others. In fact, there were muscle cars killed off by the gas crisis. Moreover, some muscle cars have gone completely forgotten just like American Motors Corporations AMX and the 2006 Pontiac GTO.
On the other hand, some muscle car models have gone on to live in infamy. As popular as they are thought, theyve also encountered some serious problems over the years. Check out what we managed to find:
The problem was detected in 2015 to 2017 year models of the Ford Mustang that come with the 5.0-liter engine. According to Fords technical service bulletin, Some 2015-2017 Mustang vehicles equipped with a 5.0L engine may exhibit an oil leak from either valve cover gasket. This may be due to the valve covers warping due to excessive heat.
To solve this issue Ford decided to add fasteners to both of the cars valve covers. No other Ford cars were said to be affected by the problem.
Ford found this problem in 2015 Mustang units that were manufactured in its Flat Rock plant. According to its manufacturer notice, In some of the affected vehicles, the underbody temperature may exceed design limits under certain driving conditions. "
"If the fuel tank and vapor lines are exposed to elevated temperatures for a prolonged period of time, they may develop a fuel or vapor leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can lead to a fire. Exposed parking brake cable may also lead to disengagement problems in the parking brake.

This problem was detected in the 2002 Chevrolet Camaro and various other vehicle models from different car manufacturers. According to a noncompliance report filed by AJ motorsport in 2006.
The lamps, when manufactured, omitted the amber side reflex reflectors or were replaced with clear side reflectors. As a result, visual sight of oncoming vehicles is decreased or diminished, which may cause collisions or even death. The company also pointed out that there is no warning prior to experiencing reduced visibility on the road because of this issue.
The problem was found among 2003 to 2004 models of the Ford Mustang SVT Cobra. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) explained, In those vehicles where the floor carpeting does not fit flush with the sheet metal, the unique rear surface profile of the mustang cobra pedal may allow the pivot pin of the pedal to catch in the cutout on the floor carpeting behind the pedal, interfering with the pedal's ability to return; the result of which could be unexpected, continued throttle application.

This particular problem is linked to the replacement keys that were possibly sold with 2010 to 2015 models of the Chevy Camaro.
According to the safety recall report, If these keys are used in the subject vehicles, there is a risk, under certain conditions, that some drivers may bump the key with their knee and unintentionally move the key away from the run position. If this occurs, engine power, and power braking will be affected, and power steering may be affected, increasing the risk of a crash.
This issue affected the 2012 Dodge Charger. It started after the 245/45Z-R20 All Season Performance tire sales code information was not included in the Central Body Controller (CBC) of the car, where the parameters for the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) are programmed.
According to the defect information report, Since the BBC configuration in the suspect vehicle population did not include a cold inflation value, a TPMS telltale would only trigger if the tire pressure fell below a default value of 22 psi. The TPMS must send a warning when tire pressure is already 24 psi.

General Motors has revealed that the issue affects its 2015 Chevrolet Corvette. According to its manufacturer notice, Some of these vehicles have been built without one of the rear parking brake cables fully seated and engaged. In this condition, the parking brake will only operate on one of the rear brake drums leading to a reduction in the parking brakes operational capability. This reduction in operational capability may cause the vehicle to roll away if parked on a steep gradient. This can also increase the likelihood of a crash.
This problem affects the 2013 Dodge Challenger and according to the defect information report submitted by Chrysler, seven incidents that were linked to this issue have been identified. It is unclear if the issue had caused any injuries.
The report also explained, Some vehicles may experience an electrical short circuit between the Starter Motor B+ cable assembly electrical terminal and the Starter Solenoid. This condition may cause a vehicle fire without warning. All seven vehicles that experienced the electrical short circuit were manufactured at the assembly plant in Brampton.

This issue stems from the electro-hydraulic power steering (EHPS) used by the 2011 to 2014 models of the Dodge Challenger and Dodge Charger. According to the safety compliance report, vehicles using this EHPS may experience an alternator diode thermal fatigue failure due to cyclical loads induced by EHPS.
Moreover, the report also explained, Depending on the failure mode and timing, system voltage may drop to critical levels, disabling systems such as the Antilock Brake System/Electronic Stability Control, Engine Control Module/Central Body Controller or result in a loss of vehicle power.
This issue affects several Chevy models including the 2020 Camaro. Because of this, a fuel leak may occur, and this may become an ignition source that could start a fire.
According to Chevrolets safety recall information, The supplier of fuel pumps for these vehicles may have failed to install a component that regulates pressure within the pump. This can result in over-pressurization leading to a crack in certain welds in the pump. If the welds crack, fuel could leak from the pump. To fix the issue, the cars high-pressure fuel pump would be replaced.

Without a doubt, the best money I ever spent was 6,000 all-in on a garden office building.
t the time of its installation 10 years ago, I was working for a multinational company and I used it for evening work and finishing off a book I was writing. But within a year, my job was kaput and I found myself self-employed. I spent two years full-time working from the little building. And I came to love it. From March, since lockdown, I have been based there again. Over 10 years, it has paid me back in spades.
It's a rectangular 16-and-a-half-foot by 10-foot form installed longways along the side boundary of my standard suburban 30-foot garden. A contractor was paid 200 to put in the foundation which was poured into a rectangular wooden plank frame.
The Steeltech people, from whom I bought it, were next to arrive. Like a procession of leafcutter ants, they hauled in outsized metal sheets in a long line and assembled the entire in an hour.
The building is split into two by an internal wall, the bigger being the office and the rest is a garden storage shed. The office room is 10x10 with two windows and a double-lock uPVC door. The outer shell is of non-perishable plastic-covered corrugated metal in green attached to a metal tubular frame and it came with 30mm foil-lined Kingspan insulation.
I paid a friend of a friend to wire it and a well-loved uncle installed a sterling board internal wall and ceiling panels which I stained mahogany and varnished to give a walnut-panel effect. The ceiling I wallpapered in pages from Dickens, Stoker and Carroll books and varnished. The curtains are recycled and home-dyed green. A quality dark green carpet from a remnant shop cost 100 and was apparently a left over from a big job on the five-star Four Seasons Hotel.
Two walls are lined with black Billy book cases from Ikea, I brought in an antique oak desk and a 'mastermind' office chair salvaged from a skip. Added to this was a wingback armchair from a house clearance auction for 30, a stove-style blow heater which my brother was throwing out and a plug-in stand alone oil radiator bought for 100. There's two architect lamps, a Tiffany-style stained glass desk lamp, an old three-in-one stereo, an old TV and a cabinet-mounted tropical fish tank for additional interest.
If you're sharing the dcor and furnishing, it all becomes a dual choice. But if it's yours only, it is your realm to do with what you want. I've been told mine looks decidedly like an Edwardian study.
I'm running through my installation list to give an idea of the sort of fittings you need for a functioning home-office garden building at a time when many are investing, either because of Covid-caused job loss, or in anticipation of the benefits of home-working going forward.
Last week, I mentioned the garden building installation company Shomera had seen its business go up by 400pc since Covid lockdown. Other firms have experienced such high demand that they can't fulfil new order until October. Key suppliers include Kelly Barna, Lidan Designs, Gardenrooms,ie and Steeltech.
There are some vital considerations to be made before you invest in a in a garden office, which can cost from 1,000 for a converted garden shed, to 12,000 for a decent permanent building, right up to 60,000 for a luxury version:
What to buy: At an entry level, there's nothing to stop you acquiring a normal scrap timber garden shed, insulating and wiring it yourself for under 1,000. But investing in a permanent structure will keep the insects and mice out, you warm and your office equipment dry, and it should last a lifetime. Bugs get in through the tiniest holes and cold brings damp, which perishes documents and equipment.
Style: Choose between timber, galvanised metal, cement board or composite. Most bigger suppliers have 'show villages' to peruse. The smallest you should consider is 8ft x 10ft for minimal physical accommodation and healthy breathing space. Like mine, you could get a dual function office/shed, which saves space in the garden for both.
Situation: Most suburban gardens allow room for a home-office building without taking from its enjoyment. It doesn't need planning permission. If you get a building that needs painting/varnishing, plonk it against a garden wall and you can't reach. The solution is rot-proof panels on any side facing a boundary wall or fence.
Foundations: If you're looking at something permanent, you'll need concrete. Measure carefully if you're doing it yourself, use a spirit level to ensure the pour frame is even and rake concrete smooth before it dries, unless you want an undulating floor like mine.
Wiring: An electrician can do it for a few hundred euro. A central ceiling light and eight plug sockets split between two walls is ideal for computers, lamps, printers and chargers. Plug-in broadband boosters cost 25 to 55.
Doors/Windows/Insulation: Heating flows right out of non-insulated spaces. Standard Kingspan 30mm for walls and roof usually comes with a supplier-bought office building. An 80mm or 50mm thickness is better. Sheeps wool works if you can get it. Double-glaze or higher for windows is best. Double-lock mechanism doors give some security.
Heating: Plug-in mobile oil radiators with timers are better than 'blow' heaters which dry out the air quickly. Time-regulated oil radiators retain heating capacity even after they are turned off.
Flooring: Carpet insulates but needs to withstand constant friction from office chair rollers, as do some timbers/laminates which can score easily.
Furnishing: A proper office chair for posture and comfort and a soft chair for long phone calls and guests. A desk facing a window, shelves, drawers, desk lamps and a heater. Then you're home and dry for home working.

Five rows each of 16 iron cots -- topped with mattresses covered with un-creased white bedsheets, neatly folded white blankets and thin pillows with blue covers -- are laid out at a distance of five feet from each other. On one side of each bed stands a grey plastic chair and on the other side rests a plastic stool with a sealed water bottle and a small soap atop it.

The mud floor is bare, and from the high roof hangs slow-moving fans, which would offer little comfort from the humidity but for the cool breeze flowing in from outside after a light drizzle.
On Wednesday, this was a patients section up on display at the campus of Radha Soami Satsang Beas in south Delhis Chhatarpur, which is set to be the biggest Covid-19 temporary hospital in India with over 10,000 beds.
The mud floor will be covered by carpets and then topped with vinyl sheets for easy cleaning. The hospital will be cooled by 18,000 tons of air-conditioners, said BM Mishra, district magistrate (south), even as workers began spreading vinyl sheets at one corner of the facility.
The Delhi government had taken over the campus, roughly the size of 22 football fields in its effort to ramp bed strength and add medical infrastructure to combat the rapidly rising cases of the coronavirus disease in the city. The Delhi government is seeking to further increase the number of beds available for patients by setting up makeshift hospitals in 40 hotels and 77 banquet halls. The idea is to add 15,800 beds for sick patients. Five hundred converted railway coaches will add another 8,000 beds for the citys Covid-19 patients.
On Tuesday, home minister Amit Shah had tweeted that a large part of the facility would be operational by Friday and manned by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
THREE SEPARATE SECTIONS
Sonalika Jiwani, IAS officer and sub-divisional (SDM) of Mehrauli, said the facility is divided into three sections: the largest for the patients, another for nurses and doctors, and the third will serve as the command section.
For patients, there will be 116 sections of 88 beds each. In the first phase, well have 2,000 beds ready by Thursday. The entire facility will be ready by the first week of July, she said.
By Wednesday, dozens of large air-conditioners were already installed even as more were on their way. With the air-conditioners yet to be functional, the site was serviced by the fans hanging from long poles. While there is one fan on an average for every three beds, they will practically be useless for most patients going by how far the beds are placed from one another.
THE FACILITIES
Every patient will have a bed, a stool, a chair, a small plastic cupboard, a dustbin and utensils, and will be given a toiletry kit. The beds will either be the foldable iron cots, or ones manufactured using cardboard.
Individual phone and laptop charging facility will be available for each bed. Patients can also bring their laptops, but for any video or audio application, they will have to use headphones, said DM Mishra.
Food will be served to the patients by volunteers who will roll them on trolleys along the rows of beds. The Satsang is capable of cooking food for three lakh people a day. So, that will not be a problem, said the DM.
TOILETS
There are 600-odd toilets at the centre with 70 portable toilets -- including three special ones for physically challenged people -- stationed outside. We will bring more portable toilets. The aim is to have one toilet for every 10 patients at least, said the DM.
Sanjeev Tiwari, the operations head of YLDA India Pvt Ltd, the firm hired by DUSIB to set up portable toilets, said that each toilet can be used about 200 times before the waste needs to be taken away. Suction vehicles will be ready to take away the waste and make the toilets usable immediately. The toilets will be cleaned twice a day and once at night, said Tiwari.
The DM said that the sanitation work will be carried out by an agency to be hired by South Delhi Municipal Corporation. All the workers will wear PPE suits. We are working out a plan to ensure there is minimal interaction between the workers and the patients, said the officer.
For uninterrupted water supply, the government has installed hydrants for the underground reservoir facility that has a capacity of 1.7 lakh litres. The water supply capacity has been augmented. The Delhi Jal Board will check samples five times a day to ensure that the quality of water is good, said Raghav Chadha, the DJBs vice-chairman who visited the place on Wednesday.
RELATIVES WONT BE ALLOWED
Relatives of patients wont be allowed inside the gates. We would prefer if they can send the patients here in ambulances, but even if they bring them themselves, theyll have to handover the patients to us at the gates and leave, said DM Mishra.
To handle the admission and discharge of patients, the authorities will use an e-hospital app that is being developed by the National Informatics Centre, said the DM. A team will work on 400 computers at the centre, he said.
The officer said that MTNL has been asked to provide landline and internet connection at the facility. We have also requested a telephone tower firm to install requisite towers nearby so that the patients do not have problems in browsing the internet, he said.

I am unapologetically indoorsy. Photo: FORTEPAN/LENCSE ZOLTN
What are the effects of spending an entire season indoors, as most of us have done this year? I dont mean the psychological effects but the material ones. I wonder about the carpets that have gotten worn down from pacing. The couches that sag from cradling our butts all day. The expanded inventories of elastic-waist pants, house slippers, sweatshirts. Among other lessons learned, weve had a chance to become intensely familiar with what we like and dislike about our living spaces. Weve experienced every day what studies have confirmed: Plants, space, and sunlight make people happy, while extreme temperatures, loud noise, cramped conditions, and dim light make people unhappy. The pandemic has forced us to confront exactly how little control we have over our homes.
Thats the subject of Emily Anthess The Great Indoors: The Surprising Science of How Buildings Shape Our Behavior, Health, and Happiness. Along with domestic spaces, Anthes explores a range of buildings fancy offices, operating rooms, a housing development designed for adults with autism, a solitary-confinement unit in hopes of dissecting the effects of architecture and design on human behavior. I read it, in a perverse spirit, entirely outside, on a sunny patch of grass, without a single person within seeing or hearing distance. I am unapologetically indoorsy, writes the author in her introduction. Its not that I dont like nature; I think nature is lovely. Ive been camping several times and enjoyed it! Ha. Me and Emily Anthes, we could not be less alike.
The formula for popular social-science books is: cold open on a catchy anecdote, proceed to divulge personal interest in topic, pivot to argument about why topic is universal and not remotely what the reader expected, and then spend 240 pages on scenes of varying persuasiveness. Im usually out by page 30. I dont know if this is a fault of my attention span, the formula, the kind of author who is drawn to the formula, or constraints pushed by publishers eager to get the book on a best-seller list. In any case, my alarm bells tend to go off early.
In order to enjoy one of these books, you need to trust the authors ability to responsibly synthesize specialized knowledge that lies outside of her, and your, expertise. You need to know in your soul that the author is not the type of person to cite Wikipedia as a source or become enveloped in a plagiarism scandal one instant after you finish reading her book. I am glad to report that Anthes passes the trustworthy test. Her sources are respectable and diligently noted. My margins were covered with scribbled WTFs not because she was drawing deranged conclusions from misinterpreted studies but because the book contains piles of cool facts that are actually, from what I can tell, facts.
Those cool facts come fast and furious. The New York City subway, for example, is smothered in microbes associated with bare feet. Why? Anthes quotes a microbiologist on the topic: Every time you take a step, your heel comes up and then presses down, creating a small bellows of bottom-of-your-foot air squirting out into the surroundings. The scientist continues: Imagine millions of people running around down there. Puff puff puff puff puff every time they take a step, they put out a little puff of foot microbiology. Another WTF moment: Pillowcases and toilet-seat surfaces are apparently strikingly similar from a microbiological perspective. These are from a chapter on the billions of invisible roommates we cohabit with, from bacteria to fungi to dust motes to a zoos worth of wee invertebrates. In one scene, Anthes unscrews her showerhead and swabs the interior, then mails it off to a lab. The results come back a year later. Among other things, her showerhead contains an organism called RB41, which has been found in dog noses and paleolithic cave paintings, and a class of mycobacteria that can cause tuberculosis and leprosy when inhaled. Nothing to freak out about, the scientist who processed the swabs assures Anthes. Many of those could be totally nonpathogenic. Could be!Even the least germophobic reader will squirm at the descriptions of carpeting (disgusting a scientists term, not mine!) and basements (hotbeds of arthropod diversity). However, its less boring to stay home all day when you know that your house is a teeming jungle.
Hospitals are scarier. Design can alter patient outcomes in unnerving ways, suggesting that our fragile bodies are susceptible to environmental factors not just psychologically but on some mysterious mechanical level. Surgical patients with plants in their rooms have lower blood pressure and use less pain medication than patients in plant-free rooms. Patients in sunny rooms fare better than patients in shady rooms. In one study, patients treated in rooms with sound-absorbing tiles were significantly less likely to be readmitted within three months. When Florence Nightingale recommended sunlight and flowers for the infirm in 1859, she anticipated what would later become known as evidence-based design.
The books best chapter explores how neuroatypical people interact with their surroundings. Gallaudet University is a private college in Washington, D.C., that largely serves students who are deaf or hard of hearing. A group of academics and architects at the school outlined design features tuned to the needs of the students, including translucent and partial walls and rooms painted in soft blues and greens, which contrast with human-skin tones and make it easier to perceive gestures. Designers who worked on a housing development created for adults with autism made a slew of decisions that would probably appeal to people without autism too, pouring a layer of gypsum concrete between each floor to dampen the sound of footfall and cleverly installing shower temperature knobs opposite the showerhead, so residents didnt have to dart through a stream of frigid or boiling water in order to adjust it. (Can we standardize that?) In a 2015 study, researchers created a dental office designed to soothe children with autism, featuring dimmer lights, relaxing music, and calming images projected onto the ceiling. What happened next will not shock you: The changes were received warmly by neurotypical people, too.
A good chunk of the books material fits into the obvious category, but its always nice to see ones personal preferences ratified by data. A study of IT employees confirmed that face-to-face communication as opposed to, say, Slack was correlated with higher productivity and performance. (I believe workers required to use Slack should be paid extra for the sheer attentional burden of it.) Students who attend class in well-ventilated and well-maintained buildings perform better academically. A detention facility remodeled to include athletic facilities, a library, and classrooms saw the number of assaults drop by 50 percent.
But for every unsurprising conclusion, theres a curveball. Anthes visits a Louisiana professor who has developed a buoyant foundation that allows houses to float on top of floodwaters. The system requires no heavy equipment and can be installed inexpensively on an existing house by just two people. Rather than pour catastrophically into a home, the floodwater itself lifts residents to safety. But what would seem like a brilliant answer to Hurricane Katrina (and a future of similar disasters, worsened by climate change) is stymied by the federal government. Homeowners in high-risk areas are required to buy flood insurance, but amphibious structures like the floating foundations are not eligible for subsidized policies. When Anthes reaches out to FEMA, shes told that the technology is not as safe as simply moving to a higher elevation. Well, sure.
The Great Indoors isnt a self-help book, but our present context has layered it with some self-helpy applications. You cant necessarily drill a window into your wall or blast a skylight into your ceiling, but you can push your favorite chair closer to the window and find out whether being depressed in a pool of sunlight is better than being depressed in a veil of shadows. If you cant turn your bedroom into an anti-sensory cocoon, do it to your own body with a pair of earplugs and an eye mask. Pick a clump of roadside greenery next time you go outside (in your mask) and put it in a rinsed-out jar on the kitchen table. All those studies proving that plants cause joy? They dont specify that the plants should be exquisite. Gather ye weeds while ye may.

If you are fortunate enough to have a terrace, a porch or some backyard space, spending a lot of time at home can be a much nicer experience. But how you design that space makes all the difference.
A lot of times, youll see a beautiful garden with very organized furniture, which looks pretty, but when you actually go and sit, its out in the blazing sun, said Scott Shrader, a landscape designer in West Hollywood, Calif., and the author of The Art of Outdoor Living.
If you want an outdoor space where youll be comfortable lingering for hours, he said, you need to address some basic questions: Can you be protected from the sun? Can you put a drink down? Can you put your feet up?
In short, you need to think of it as another room in your home an outdoor room and furnish it accordingly.
We asked landscape and interior designers for practical advice on how to do that.
An outdoor room wont serve any function particularly well if it tries to do everything, so start with an honest assessment of how you plan to use the space.
You want to ask yourself, first and foremost, What are we going do there? said Charlotte Moss, a New York-based designer and a passionate gardener.
If the terrace will be a place for alfresco dining, youll need chairs that will allow people to sit upright and a table high enough to eat at a very different arrangement of furniture than a space for casual lounging, where sofas and low tables may be more appropriate.
Or maybe its just a space for hiding from everyone, Ms. Moss said, which would require greater privacy and perhaps just a single chaise longue.
If your outdoor space is large, planning several different seating arrangements can accommodate multiple functions.
When youre trying to decide on the style of an outdoor room, look to your homes interior-design scheme, Mr. Shrader said, to reinforce the connection between indoors and out.
I always start inside the house and work my way out, he said, with the goal of achieving an effortless flow from inside to outside.
In his West Hollywood home, he said, the indoor floors are antiqued oak, so he installed chiseled stone pavers on the terrace outside, for a similar sense of age. I try to blend the materials and make them all uniform so that you dont have anything super jarring, and its all very harmonious, he said.
Your interior-design scheme can also inform material and color choices for outdoor furniture, accessories and even plantings, said Keith Williams, a partner at the Palm Beach-based landscape-architecture firm Nievera Williams and the author of The Graphic Garden.
For instance, he said, if the house has soft, pale colors, well tend to pick that up in the landscaping through the choice of outdoor fabrics and flowers.
Demarcate the area of the outdoor room and make it feel like a destination that stands apart from the rest of the terrace or yard by changing the flooring material where the furniture will be placed.
For an outdoor dining table by a pool in Palm Beach, for instance, Mr. Williams designed an area where the ground looks almost like carpet, with crisscrossing lines of black pebbles and diamond-shaped patches of synthetic grass.
Wesley Moon, a New York-based interior designer, rolled out an actual carpet at his apartment on Fire Island an indoor-outdoor rug from Dash & Albert. It gives that softness that really makes it feel like a room, he said, noting that it is surprisingly easy to keep clean. You just vacuum it like a normal rug.
A section of wood decking could also be used to underpin a seating area, Mr. Moon noted, within a large expanse of pavers.
Ms. Moss, inspired by the gardens at Colonial Williamsburg, in Virginia, used crushed oyster shells for the floor of the outdoor dining area in her garden in East Hampton, N.Y. Mr. Shrader sometimes uses an area of pea gravel.
If there is no roof or overhang above your outdoor space, you can at least create the impression of a ceiling, Mr. Shrader said, both for the intimacy a sense of enclosure provides and for protection from the sun.
Everybody feels most comfortable when theyre tucked under something, he said.
Putting a seating area beneath the canopy of a tree is one of his favorite techniques. Often, I talk about trees as my outdoor ceilings, he said.
In the absence of a tree, Mr. Shrader will sometimes add a trellis over a seating arrangement, which he might cover with willow or bamboo. An umbrella would also work, he said, although it wont be as sturdy or durable.
Its also possible to add a sense of privacy by introducing tall plantings around the perimeter of an outdoor room. Its not a physical wall, but more of a visual separation that says, Something is happening here, Ms. Moss said. It could even be a 3-foot hedge that defines the space.
For her dining space in East Hampton, Ms. Moss installed a ceiling of hickory branches above walls of clipped hornbeams.
On a terrace or balcony, tall planters filled with leafy or flowering plants could be used to similar effect.
Many successful outdoor rooms have nearly as much furniture, and as many accessories, as indoor rooms.
I try really hard to make the outdoors just as comfortable and chic as the indoors, Mr. Moon said, so people really want to spend time out there.
That means plenty of comfortable seating, often with cushions upholstered in outdoor fabric (typically solution-dyed acrylic for durability). It also means having enough tables to hold drinks, snacks, phones and books. Add outdoor throw pillows in the same way you would use indoor pillows in the living room, Mr. Moon said, and keep throws handy for cool evenings.
In an outdoor room on a Manhattan terrace, Mr. Moon used low-slung, armless chairs from Dedon with throw pillows in various shapes, sizes and fabrics, as well as a group of small teak-and-stone tables that could be pushed together as a coffee table or pulled apart as side tables.
If your outdoor room will serve as a dining space, Mr. Shrader said, You really need to think about it like youre in an indoor dining room and hosting Thanksgiving dinner.
Consider the maximum number of guests youre likely to entertain and make sure you have an appropriately sized table and enough chairs, he advised. Then think about how you will serve meals.
A strategically placed buffet or console table can hold platters during dinners or function as a bar for cocktail parties, he said. After guests leave, that same piece of furniture can serve as a pedestal for potted plants and decorative objects.
Finish the space with vases, bowls and candleholders, which can be changed and rearranged over time. If the outdoor room is next to an exterior wall, consider adding mirrors, pieces of sculpture or wall-mounted planters.
Lighting is an important functional consideration without it, you might not be able to find your drink after dark but it can also provide a significant boost to nighttime ambience.
Some methods of adding light are simpler than others. You can hang a candle chandelier from a tree branch or have lanterns with candles, Ms. Moss said. Its very romantic.
Plug-in string lights and portable LED-based candles and lanterns are other easy options for adding light that dont require hiring an electrician.
If you want something more permanent, decorative pendant lamps can be suspended from pergolas, and sconces can be installed on nearby walls.
For a more dramatic look, Mr. Shrader and Mr. Williams frequently use low-voltage landscape lighting that is barely visible during the day, including small lights hidden in trees and mixed into plantings, and pin lights tucked into pergolas.
Whether you choose portable lamps, hard-wired decorative fixtures or landscape lighting or a mix of all three Mr. Shrader said he always prefers outdoor lights with a warm-white color temperature of about 2,700 Kelvin.
However you illuminate your outdoor room, adding light is crucial to extending the hours you can use the space, Mr. Williams said. Otherwise, it all goes away after the sun sets.

Office sound masking is an important workplace component that can help businesses protect private information and improve employee morale.
Sound maskingotherwise known as white noise or pink noise"is the only acoustical treatment that involves all sound paths, according to the Taylored Systems Blog. The acoustical effect of walls, carpets, and ceilings do not change, but sound masking can be modified.
According to Healthline, the color of noise is determine by the energy of the sound signal. White noise contains equal energy on every frequency. People often use it as constant background noise, and examples include a fan, radio or television static, or an air conditioner.
Pink noise, on the other hand, is equal energy per octave, and is often compared to white noise with the bass turned up. Examples include waves at the beach, rustling leaves, or a steady rain. Pink noise is also helpful for private conversations, and its often more enjoyable to listen to in a working environment.
An office sound masking system is important if you dont want people to overhear certain speeches or conversations. This is especially important for certain industries, such as healthcare, government, law ,and finance, which often have strict confidentially requirements. For example, a business could install sound masking outside of a conference room if its near a reception area.
When installing sound masking, architects often use an ABC approach: absorb, block, or cover sound. And if youre concerned about aesthesis, dont worry. Sound masking installation can be minimal and hardly noticeable.
Office sound masking is important for a variety of reasons. Not only does it help protect personal information, but it can also improve productivity and employee morale.
Heres how the six benefits can help your business:
Protect customer information: Did you provide your credit card number over the phone? Did the recipient of that information read it back to you? If so, chances are high that others may have heard it as well. This is especially important in offices where there is a lot of open space. In some industries, such as healthcare, protecting customer information is the law.
Protect personal employee information: You may think that casual employee conversations are private, but phones and other devices may pick up what youre saying in the office. Be mindful that conversations between employees could potentially reach a customers ears.
Ensure privacy for meetings: Meetings are meant to be private, and sometimes sensitive information is the topic, such as a new product launch, a personnel issue, or a company acquisition. Sound masking helps keep private meetings private, and according to Cambridge Sound, 60 percent of employees say a lack of speech privacy is a main point of dissatisfaction.
Fewer distractions: According to Cambridge Sound Management, employees can waste as much as 86 minutes per day due to noise distractions.
Remove awkward silences: Awkward silence can lead to distractions, and simple sound masking noises can make a work environment more comfortable.
Enhance workplace productivity: Sound masking can lead to a more enjoyable and productive environment. Noise interrupts employees every 11 minutes, according to Cambridge Sound, and it can take 23 minutes for employees to get back on track. Also, research shows that employees waste almost 22 minutes a day due to distracting workplace conversations. If employees are less distracted, they are more engaged and according to Forbes, highly engaged teams show 21% greater profitability.
Office sound masking is an important tool with a variety of benefits that can enhance a workplace, such as protecting important information and ensuring privacy.

Bird's eye view of Heliogen's Lancaster, CA test facility.
Bill Gates calls it the 75% Problem.
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from power plants only account for 25% of total, and electrical generation is one source of GHG emissions for which cheap renewable sources are well-suited.
If we dont radically reduce the remaining 75% of emissions, we could carpet Arizona in wall-to-wall photovoltaic (PV) panels and still not do enough to bring down atmospheric CO2 levels.
The trouble is that the remaining three-fourths of emissions are mostly generated through large-scale industrial and agricultural processes that lie at the core of virtually every product we enjoy in our modern lives steel, glass, concrete, grains, beef, plastics, chemicalsthe list goes on and on.
These end products or their essential inputs can only be manufactured by using very high temperatures; with current processes, the only way to generate the heat required is by burning fossil fuels.
This situation leaves us with the mother of all quandaries:
Either we destroy the capacity of the planet to sustain our complex human civilization or we give up the fruits of our complex human civilization to preserve the planet for some schmoes we will never meet.
When faced with this kind of a quandary, the only solution is to think outside the box.
Ive got it! Why dont we tie industrial production to a process that can scale really quickly, like Moores Law!
In fact, one of the most inventive, entrepreneurial engineers ever to come out of CalTechs annual crop of incredibly inventive, entrepreneurial engineers Bill Gross, founder of the first tech incubator, Idealab has already followed the chain of logic above and come to the same Moores Law epiphany. He and the company he founded to operationalize his Eureka moment, Heliogen, is well on the way to implementing a solution that holds enormous potential for mitigating climate change.
If Gross and Heliogen are successful in their ambitious plans, we will all have a chance to continue enjoying the fruits of a modern, industrial life using heat generated solely by renewable resources.
Heliogens secret is the application of recent advances in computing power, imaging systems, and artificial intelligence to the field of Concentrated Solar Power (CSP).
A Brief Guide to CSP
Different CSP configurations exist; the type most analogous to Heliogens system has the great name of Solar Power Tower.
(See also my 2019 article about another company GlassPoint Solar for a look at a trough CSP configuration.)
CSP installations do not absorb solar energy like PV panels instead, they concentrate the suns light at a specific point using mirrors. Solar power tower installations are some of the most beautiful and elegant industrial facilities I can imagine, with a meticulously arranged, dish-shaped array of large mirrors, called heliostats, that silently reflect the suns light at a focal area on the central tower.
Aerial view of the Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project, a 110 megawatt plant near Tonopah, Utah.
Pipes running to the top of the tower and back allow molten salt to flow into an area at the heliostats focal points. The concentrated light rays heat the molten salt before moving it into an insulated tank where it can be stored until it needs to be used, for example, to create steam to run a generator.
These CSP installations operate on what engineers term an open-loop control system, just like your kitchen oven.
Your oven buzzer rings when the time you initially set runs out, whether the oven contains a 14-pound lump of turkey sashimi or if your roast is well on its way to becoming a cubic zirconia. The oven receives no information about the doneness of the dish, so cant make adjustments to the heat or the cooking time.
Similarly, heliostats in a CSP installation are programmed to move according to precise calculations of where the sun should be in the sky, but do not receive information about how accurately their rays are hitting the tower.
In a world where there were no earthquakes, wind, dust storms, or clouds, an open-loop control system would work just fine. In the world we live in, these kinds of environmental factors mean that heliostats are never positioned exactly right; since they dont receive feedback from the tower about where their beams are hitting, they cant compensate for the environmental factors throwing them off.
A view of the central tower at the Ivanpah Solar Power Facility in the Mojave Desert. The tower area ... [+] illuminated by the heliostats is about three stories tall.
Because the light from the heliostats is not perfectly concentrated, current CSP installations can only generate temperatures up to around 650 degrees Celsius. This is sufficient for some industrial applications, but for the really polluting activities manufacturing steel, glass, concrete, and hydrogen the CSP temperature ceiling is about 400-900 degrees lower than what we need.
Heliogen CSP
Gross realized that by turning a CSP installations open-loop control system into a closed-loop one, he could concentrate the suns rays much more precisely and, in so doing, generate much higher temperatures.
Heliogen CSP arrays take advantage of:
In other words, Gross has designed Heliogen so that its technology can ride the wave of Moores Law rather than being stuck on the plodding development path associated with civil engineering projects.
The efficacy of the Heliogen CSP design is evident from photos of the companys test installation in Lancaster, California.
A view of the solar power tower at Heliogen's Lancaster, California test facility. The area ... [+] illuminated by the heliostats is about the size of a basketball hoop.
The Heliogen heliostats are so precisely focused using the closed-loop control system that the sunlight is concentrated in the small circle on the tower seen in the photo above. The total area at which the reflected sunlight is concentrated in a Heliogen system is about the size of a basketball hoop. Compare that to the focal area of a conventional CSP system, which is about the size of a New York City brownstone.
Heliogens phenomenally accurate focusing is made possible by cameras mounted on the tower that monitor the angle at which the heliostats are pointed and by a few powerful but off-the-shelf GPUs that use proprietary software to make real-time adjustments to the position of the heliostats.
Gross told me that the system hit 1,000 degrees Celsius immediately after the team flipped the switch on its first test run and that, after a bit of tweaking, the test installation is now capable of hitting 1,500 degrees Celsius precisely the range that the most polluting industrial applications require.
Potential Impact
While all the articles covering Heliogen Ive seen so far talk about the potential to carry out cement manufacturing, the thing that excited me when I started researching the company was the potential to split water to manufacture hydrogen.
Cement is heavy and hard to move. Heliogen stores heat energy in stone, another medium that does not immediately bring portability to mind. However, hydrogen is the lightest element and is easily transportable as long as one is careful with it. It can easily be converted into useful, energy dense chemicals as well.
Completely aside from my conversations with Gross, I have been struck by the number of reports that have crossed my desk lately opining about the hydrogen economy of the future. At present, 95% of hydrogen is produced using a process called steam reformation which burns copious amounts of fossil fuels. The fact that Heliogen sees a pathway to manufacture essentially unlimited amounts of hydrogen without burning a single fossil fuel molecule is an unalloyed positive for society.
This allows civilization the chance to maintain a high standard of living while getting the Keeling Curve headed in the right direction.
Next Steps for Heliogen
Heliogens announcement in late 2019 that it had generated temperatures of 1,000 degrees Celsius using its CSP system garnered a flood of requests from firms around the world. Gross told me that, out of this initial group, he hopes to go live with three major pilot projects within the year. The aggregate revenue potential for Heliogen when each of these pilots are built out totals billions of dollars.
I still have a few technical questions out to Gross and his team and, even though Im excited about the wonderful potential Heliogens technology represents, am also conscious of the immense complexities involved in novel and ambitious engineering projects.
In addition to discussing his stunningly ambitious plans for Heliogens future growth, Gross and I spent time talking about the current state of climate change investing and, unsurprisingly, he had some terrific insights. I will be writing up my interview notes and publishing to this column very soon.
Its clear that Bill Gross knows, as I do, that humanity faces a challenge of the gravest nature and that our only chance is to embark on a paradigm shift with boldness, creativity, and passion.
Intelligent investors take note.
