Everyday cheapskate: The Cheap and Easy Way to Clean Rows and Rows of Upholstered Chairs – Herald & Review - July 4, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

A great deal on used chairs can quickly turn sour when it's going to cost a lot of money to have them professionally cleaned. But not to worry. Whether you're looking at hundreds of chairs, or the sofas and chairs at home, there's a very effective and inexpensive way to get that job done.

Dear Mary: Lestoil sounds like a great stain remover for laundry. What do you use for stains on upholstered chairs? Our church is fairly, new and when we bought chairs for the sanctuary, we bought what we could afford. They were used. Some of the chairs have some interesting stains. What do you suggest as the best way to clean them?

Dear Lois: This is tricky. Depending on how much general soil has accumulated on the chairs, spot-treating the worst stains could result in an even bigger problem with lots of nice clean spots that stand out and look as bad at the stains. I suggest that you do this right by performing a complete upholstery cleaning on all of those chairs. Don't panic. What I am about to recommend is not difficult. In fact, it's kinda fun.

Find someone in your congregation who owns a good portable upholstery-cleaning machine and is willing to lend it to you for this project. Or, if someone wants to make a donation (you'll be cleaning those chairs more than a few times, I predict), I recommend a good portable machine like the Bissell 3624 SpotClean Pro Portable Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner, which costs about $130. If that's not a possibility, check into renting a portable carpet- and upholstery-cleaning machine.

Once you have a machine, get a few cans of Spot Shot (the best stain treatment for carpet, which I use on upholstery all the time with great results). One person goes up and down the rows of chairs giving the obvious stains a hit of Spot Shot. Someone else follows with the power cleaner to clean the upholstered areas. You want to stay away from soap in the cleaning solution, as that will be a challenge to rinse away and act as a dirt magnet if left behind in the fabric. Because you don't know the nature of the stains and soil, you do need some cleaning power. Here's the recipe I would use:

Into the cleaner reservoir, pour cup unscented liquid Febreze, cup liquid OxiClean laundry stain fighter and cup white vinegar. Add hot tap water to the fill line. Follow the instructions on the machine.

(For a smaller job at home, pour into a 16-ounce spray bottle cup liquid Febreze, cup liquid OxiClean laundry stain fighter and cup white vinegar. Then add hot tap water to fill, apply the sprayer top, and mix well. Lightly spray the stained areas, and then scrub gently with a clean white cloth.)

If you can borrow a machine, this should not be a very costly venture at all. And get ready for some awesome results.

Dear Mary: I saw your review of the Eufy HomeVac Cordless Stick Vacuum and decided to order it. I love the vacuum! It's lightweight and easy for me, a disabled person who uses a cane, to handle. So far, it's doing a wonderful job picking up the litter my kitty drags across the floors and carpet. I actually enjoy using it. Thank you!

Dear Kathy: I'm getting mountains of mail in response to that Eufy. Most stick vacs must be laid down on the floor or returned to their charger when not in use, but not the Eufy. It stands alone. And its powerful lithium-ion battery can hold a charge for months. I keep my Eufy in a convenient place that is far from its charger. When it gets low on charge, I plug it in for a refill. This stick vac is a dream come true for anyone, but especially for those with physical limitations who aren't ready to give up on keeping a tidy home. Thanks for writing!

Best Homemade Carpet Cleaner Solution – eMaxHealth - July 4, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

The first thing I did was invest in a good quality carpet spot cleaner. After doing some research, I settled on the Hoover Spotless Portable Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner.

I was initially very pleased with the cleaner, and very impressed with how easily it took out stains in my carpets, my sofas, my kids mattresses, and even my car upholstery--and quickly used up the included samples of carpet cleaner solution provided with the machine.

Thats when I suffered serious sticker shock and began scouring the internet for a recipe for the best homemade carpet cleaner solution. A replacement gallon bottle of their cleaning solution runs about $13-15, so, roughly $26-30 per gallon, but the recipe below works even better than the expensive branded solution, and makes a gallon of concentrated carpet cleaner solution for only about $1. As with most things in life, you just cant beat homemade.

    Ingredients:

Directions: 1. Mix together in a large mixing bowl with spout, laundry detergent, awesome cleaner, oxyclean, and tide. Stir until well combined. 2. Add hot water to gallon container, leaving space at the top. Gently pour in laundry soap mixture. Stir or agitate gently to mix, but avoid making too much foam. 3. Slowly fill container the rest of the way with hot water.

This recipe makes a CONCENTRATED solution, so use in the same ratios as recommended on your cleaning machine. You will definitely want to dilute this before cleaning your carpets, as a little goes a long way.

    * LAs Totally Awesome Cleaner is a concentrated non-toxic and biodegradable cleaning product that I use to clean literally EVERYTHING around my home.

Simply dilute it according to the chart on the side of the bottle. It works on floors, stove tops, sinks, fabric, outdoor patio furniture, and more. It is widely available at discount stores; I find it at Dollar Tree near my home for $1 per bottle.

Try this homemade carpet cleaner solution next time you have a mess on your hands, and let us know in the comments below what you think.

Carpet cleaning – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - October 1, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

Carpet cleaning, for appearance, and the removal of stains, dirt, and allergens is done through several methods. Clean carpets are recognized by manufacturers as being more visually pleasing, potentially longer-lasting, and probably healthier than poorly maintained carpets.[1]

Although there is an actual steam cleaning industrial process, in the context of carpet cleaning, "steam cleaning" is, in fact, hot water extraction cleaning. The hot water extraction cleaning method uses equipment that sprays heated water, sometimes with added cleaning chemicals, on the carpet. Simultaneously, the water is vacuumed up, along with any dislodged and dissolved dirt. Many carpet manufacturers recommend professional hot water extraction as the most effective carpet cleaning method.[citation needed] Actual steam could damage man-made carpet fibers or shrink natural fibers such as wool.[citation needed]

Hot water extraction equipment may be a portable unit that plugs into an electrical outlet, or a truck mount carpet cleaner requiring long hoses from the truck or trailer. Truck mounted equipment may be used where electricity is unavailable (e.g. if electrical service was terminated). Truck mount carpet cleaning may be unsuited to premises distant from a driveway or road, and hoses may need to pass through windows to reach upper floors of a building. Hoses needed for truck mount and professional portable carpet cleaning may present an inconvenience or tripping hazard to users of hallways, and pets or children can escape through doors that must be left ajar for hoses. Heated or air conditioned air will also escape from buildings when doors are left open for hoses, potentially creating a significant waste of energy. Truck mounted carpet cleaning equipment minimizes noise in the room being cleaned, but truck mounted carpet cleaning equipment may cause noise and air pollution offensive to neighbors, and may violate anti-idling bylaws in some jurisdictions. However, truck-mounted cleaning is much faster than portable equipment, and extra heat and power can give faster drying times.

A common process of hot water extraction [1] begins with preconditioning. Alkaline agents such as ammonia solution for synthetic carpets, or acidic solution (such as vinegar solution) for woolen carpets, are sprayed into the carpet, then agitated with a grooming brush or an automatic scrubbing machine. Next, a pressurized manual or automatic cleaning tool (such as a wand) passes over the surface to rinse out all pre-conditioner, residue, and particulates. If an alkaline detergent is used on a woolen fibre, use of an acetic acid solution will restore neutral fiber pH. The acid rinse thus neutralizes the alkaline residues, and can contribute to softening cleaned fabrics.[2]

The hot water extraction method is the preferred method of many carpet manufacturers.[citation needed]

Extraction is, by far, the most important step in the hot water extraction process. Since the hot-water extraction method uses much more water than other methods like bonnet or shampoo cleaning, proper extraction and air flow are critical to avoid drying issues. Drying time may also be decreased by extra use of fans, air conditioning, and/or outdoor ventilation.[3]

Older surfaces, such as double jute-backed carpets and loose rugs with natural foundation yarns, could shrink after a wet treatment, leading to suppositions that wet-cleaning could also remove wrinkles.[citation needed] However, this notion is antiquated and this method could also occasionally tear seams or uproot strips.[citation needed] Newer carpets, such as with synthetic backing and foundation yarns, do not shrink, and they smooth easily; in such carpets, wrinkles indicate an underlying problem, such as adhesive, that may need a certified carpet inspector to determine.[4]

Wet-cleaning systems naturally require drying time, which may lead to concerns about very slow drying, the risk of discoloration returning during drying, and odors, bacteria, fungi, molds, and mildews. Carpet cleaning specialists try to find a balance between rapid drying (attributable to lower flow rate through the cleaning jets of a spray system) and the need to remove the most soil (attributable to higher flow rate).[3]

Pretreatments similar to those in dry-cleaning and "very low moisture" systems are employed, but require a longer dwell time of 15 to 20 minutes, because of lower amounts of carpet agitation. Ideal pretreatments should rinse easily and leave dry, powdery, or crystalline residue that can be flushed without contributing to re-soiling.[2]

Many dry carpet-cleaning systems rely on specialized machines. These systems are mostly "very low moisture" (VLM) systems, relying on dry compounds complemented by application cleaning solutions, and are growing significantly in market share due in part to their very rapid drying time,[3] a significant factor for 24-hour commercial installations. Dry-cleaning and "very low moisture" systems are also often faster and less labor-intensive than wet-extraction systems.

Heavily soiled areas require the application of manual spotting, pretreatments, preconditioners, and/or "traffic-lane cleaners", (commonly sprayed onto carpet prior to the primary use of the dry-cleaning system) which are detergents or emulsifiers which break the binding of different soils to carpet fibers over a short period of time. For example, one chemical may dissolve the greasy films that bind soils to the carpet, and thus prevent effective soil removal through vacuuming. The solution may add a solvent like d-limonene, petroleum byproducts, glycol ethers, or butyl agents. The amount of time the pretreatment dwells in the carpet should be less than 15 minutes, due to the thorough carpet brushing common to these "very low moisture" systems, which provides added agitation to ensure the pretreatment works fully through the carpet.[2] The benefit of dry carpet cleaning, over wet solutions, is that dry chemical compounds don't attract dirt, like dried shampoo.[citation needed] While dry carpet cleaning is more expensive and more time consuming to clean than Bonnet or extraction, dry cleaning formulas put less stress on the carpets themselves.[citation needed]

A 98% biodegradable or others,[5] slightly moist absorbent cleaning compound may be spread evenly over carpet and brushed or scrubbed in. For small areas, a household hand brush can work such a compound into carpet pile; working like "tiny sponges", the attracted cleaning solution dissolve dirt, dirt and grime is attracted/absorbed to the compound, after a short drying time (the cleaning solution which is attracted to the compound must evaporate), it will be removed with a vacuum cleaner, the drier the better, leaving carpet immediately clean and dry. But it's very difficult to remove all residues, the residues can cause allergies and biological compounds may cause discolourations on carpets. For commercial applications, a specially designed cylindrical counter-rotating brushing system is used, without a vacuum cleaner. Machine scrubbing is more typical, in that hand scrubbing generally cleans only the top third of carpet.

In the 1990s, new polymers began literally encapsulating (crystallizing) soil particles into dry residues on contact.[6] In the conventional cleaning process surfactant molecules attach themselves to oily soil particles, suspending them (emulsification) so that they can be easily rinsed away. Surfactant (detergent) molecules and emulsified soils which escape being rinsed away, remain in the fibre and continue to attract soiling, causing the condition of the carpet to degenerate; often re-soiling faster than before it was subjected to the cleaning process. Encapsulators are speciality detergent polymers which become part of the detergent system. As drying occurs (20-30 min. drytime), after cleaning, these encapsulators bind the detergent molecules and residual soils in a brittle, crystalline structure.[5] Detergent and soil particles can no longer attract other soils and are easily removed by dry vacuuming. In addition to binding the detergent and soil residues the encapsulation chemistry coats the clean fibre with the same brittle film. This reduces the fibres affinity for oily and particulate soils. As this brittle film"breaks away" and more soil is removed, the appearance of the fibre improves as opposed to soiling more rapidly. Products which also employ fluorochemical technology, display dramatically extended anti re-soiling time periods. Cleaning solution is applied by rotary machine, brush applicator, or compression sprayer. Dry residue is vacuumable immediately (20-30 min. drytime), either separately or from a built-in unit of the cleaning-system machine. According to ICS Cleaning Specialist, evidence suggests encapsulation improves carpet appearance, compared to other systems; and it is favorable in terms of high-traffic needs, operator training, equipment expense, and lack of wet residue. Encapsulation carpet cleaning also keeps carpets cleaner for longer periods of time compared to other methods. Encapsulation also avoids the drying time of carpet shampoos, making the carpet immediately available for use. The use of encapsulation to create a crystalline residue that can be immediately (20-30 min. drytime) vacuumed (as opposed to the residue of wet cleaning systems, which generally requires an additional day before vacuuming) is a newer technology that has recently become an accepted method for commercial and residential deep cleaning.[4]

After club soda mixed with cleaning product, other products are also possible, is deposited onto the surface as mist, a round buffer or "bonnet" scrubs the mixture with rotating motion. This industry machine resembles a floor buffer, with an absorbent spin or oscillating pad that attracts soil and is rinsed or replaced repeatedly. The bonnet method is not strictly dry-cleaning and involves significant drying time. To reduce pile distortion, the absorbent bonnet should be kept well-lubricated with cleaning solution. Its not recommended to dunk the bonnet in a bucket of cleaning solution and then wring it out with a mop-bucket wringer, then the bonnet is to wet. Its very important to change or turn the bonnet early, Bonnets can become filled with soil in just a couple hundred square feet. And once loaded with soil, the bonnet will not hold any more; instead, it simply moves the soil from one area to another. The overly wet bonnet also deposits residues that attract soils when they are dry, creating the need to clean more often. Its recommended for robust and not for high floor carpet, it swirls the floor. It distorts pile and grinds dirt deeper in carpet fiber also it has an abrasive effect.[7] When there is a large amount of foreign material in the carpet, extraction with a wet process may be needed. Normally, the spin-bonnet method may not be as capable of sanitizing carpet fibers due to the lack of hot water, for this a spezial thermo machine is needed, here the buffing machine is equipped with a heating, to heat up the bonnet, but a post-cleaning application of an antimicrobial agent is used to make up for this. Compared to steam cleaning, the small amounts of water required with spin-bonnet carpet cleaning favor water-conservation considerations. It only cleans the top of the carpet 1/8 inch but its very fast for wide areas. But bonnet cleaning is not the best mechanism for completely removing the chemical that is pre-sprayed onto a carpet. Its recommended that only surfactant free or encapsulating products are used. On the other hand, the re-soiling is great.

Wet shampoo cleaning with rotary machines, followed by thorough wet vacuuming, was widespread until about the 1970s, but industry perception of shampoo cleaning changed with the advent of encapsulation. Hot-water extraction, also regarded as preferable, had not been introduced either. Wet shampoos were once formulated from coconut oil soaps;[4] wet shampoo residues can be foamy or sticky, and steam cleaning often reveals dirt unextracted by shampoos. Since no rinse is performed, the powerful residue can continue to collect dirt after cleaning, leading to the misconception that carpet cleaning can lead to the carpet getting "dirtier faster" after the cleaning.[4][6] The best method is to combine shampoo and extraction, first shampoo with a spin brush to loosen the dirt and the pile, then extraction the carpet. But this needs time and double rinsed is necessary and the drying time is up to 24 h.

When wet-shampoo chemistry standards converted from coconut oil soaps to synthetic detergents as a base, the shampoos dried to a powder, and loosened dirt would attach to the powder components, requiring vacuuming by the consumer the day after cleaning.[4]

Dry foam cleaning[8] involves applying cleaning foam and immediately vacuuming the foam. It is not a completely dry method since the foam is 90% air and 10% liquid. A dry foam machine consists of a pressure tank in which a solution of water and shampoo is added. This method is used for water sensitive carpets, needle felt, and other carpet types whose construction inhibits sufficient water extraction.

Vacuum washing[9] employs a washhead that sprays water without detergent and immediately removes it by suction, creating a swirl of water. This ensures high cleaning performance, extracting the dirt from the carpet to a depth of half inch. By immediately reabsorbing the wash water, the drying time greatly shortened. This method is suitable for intermediate and basic cleaning. Because it does not require cleaning products, it leaves no detergent residue. Vacuum washing has long been in use in Europe, mostly in larger train and bus companies, schools, and historic preservation. The system works on all surfaces which are water resistant (carpet, upholstered furniture, wooden floors, stone, plastics). A great advantage is that this system works without brushes or pads so there is no abrasion on pile.

Other household carpet-cleaning processes are much older than industry standardization, and have varying degrees of effectiveness as supplements to the more thorough cleaning methods accepted in the industry.

Vacuum cleaners use air pumps to create partial vacuums to suck up dust and dirt, usually from floors and carpets. Filtering systems or cyclones collect dirt for later disposal. Modern carpet cleaning equipment use rotary vacuum heads and spray jets to deep clean the carpet through hundreds of multi-directional cleaning passes. Some add steam and agitation. Models include upright (dirty-air and clean-air), canister and backpack, wet-dry and pneumatic, and other varieties. Robotic vacuum cleaners have recently become available.

Tea leaves and cut grass were formerly common for floor cleaning, to collect dust from carpets, albeit with risks of stains. Ink was removed with lemon or with oxalic acid and hartshorn; oil with white bread or with pipe clay; grease fats with turpentine; ox gall and naphtha were also general cleaners. Ammonia and chloroform were recommended for acid discoloration. Benzine and alum were suggested for removing insects;[10]diatomaceous earth and material similar to cat litter are still common for removing infestations. Candle wax is removed by placing a towel over the affected carpet area and applying steam from a clothes iron until the wax absorbs into the towel. Some traditional methods of stain removal remain successful and ecological. Caution should be addressed when treating natural fibers such as wool.

The longer the stain material remains in the carpet, the higher the chance of permanent color change, even if all the original stain material is removed. At times pets urinate on the carpet and this results in a bad odor especially when it is hot and humid. The carpet or rug is usually taken outside and immersed in water to remove such stains. Immediately blotting (not rubbing) the stain material as soon as possible will help reduce the chances of permanent color change. Artificial food coloring stains are generally considered permanent stains. These may be removed by professional cleaners or deep cleaning rental machines with heat-transfer stain-reducing chemicals, but carry risks of burning the carpet. Stain removal products can be combined with anti-allergen treatments to kill house dust mites.

Carpet rods, rattan rugbeaters, and carpet-beating machines for beating out dust, and also brooms, brushes, dustpans, and shaking and hanging were all carpet-cleaning methods of the 19th century; brooms particularly carry risks of wear. Steam cleaning increases the lifespan of your carpet.[10]

Robert Wittkamp (19422007), IICRC-certified master Carpet Cleaners technician with 30 years' expertise in carpet cleaning, commented that old wives' tales persist and thrive within the industry. For instance, the concept that walking barefoot on a carpet may lead to damage from body oils has not been supported or disproven by standardized reports or testing or by industry evidence.[4]

    Carpet Cleaners | Carpet Cleaning & Stain Removal | Chem-Dry - September 30, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

When you choose Chem-Dry, you get a deeper clean, faster-drying carpets and a healthier home for you and your family.

Chem-Dry has become a trusted name in carpet cleaning for thousands of households, cleaning in more than 10,000 households daily worldwide and more than 1 billion square feet of carpet every year, and for good reason. We use a unique Hot Carbonating Extraction (HCE) process to deliver a deeper, longer-lasting carpet cleaning combined with a green-certified solution that is all natural and safe for your kids and pets. This means you get a clean that is healthier for you, your family and your home.

DRIER. The Chem-Dry cleaning process uses 80% less water than typical steam cleaning, so carpets dry within hours, not days. This means you and your family can get back to enjoying your home sooner. See a full comparison of Chem-Dry vs steam cleaning to see all of the benefits of choosing Chem-Dry carpet cleaners.

CLEANER. Our primary solution is carbonated and, just like club soda, as it penetrates deep into your carpet's fibers, it lifts the dirt from deep within your carpets so it can be whisked away with our powerful extraction equipment giving you the most thorough clean. And there is no dirt-attracting residue left behind, so carpets stay cleaner longer.

HEALTHIER. We use a low-water method which means there is less risk of mold and mildew growth under your carpet that can result from the excessive water used by most steam cleaners. We use an all natural, green-certified cleaning solution that does not contain any harsh soaps or chemicals and is completely safe and non-toxic for your family and pets. Additionally, an independent air quality lab found that our HCE method removes 98% of common allergens in your carpets and upholstery, and when a sanitizer is added, 89% of bacteria is removed for your indoor air*. That adds up to a safer carpet cleaning that is healthier for you, your family and your home.

We understand that you have a choice in carpet cleaners. But not all carpet cleaning services are alike. To find out how big an impact a Chem-Dry cleaning can have on home health, we thought it would be helpful to measure how effective our cleaning process is in eliminating unhealthy and unwanted elements from your home. So we commissioned a leading independent air quality laboratory to conduct a study using Chem-Drys Hot Carbonating Extraction (HCE) process in multiple homes. The lab found that Chem-Dry carpet cleaner removes an average of 98.1% of common household allergens such as dust mite allergens and pet dander from the carpets and upholstery we clean and found that, when adding sanitizer to our HCE carpet cleaning process, we removed an average of 89% of the bacteria in the air and 82.3% of the bacteria from carpets. With Chem-Dry carpet cleaner, you can breathe easier about the healthfulness of your home for your family.

Find out below how Chem-Dry's Carpet Protectant Package and Healthy Home Package (professional strength deodorizer and sanitizer) can help protect your home from everyday stains, unhealthy allergens and bacteria.

Your carpets get a lot of use, spills are inevitable. Over time, the factory-applied stain resistant becomes less effective and fades away leaving your carpets susceptible to staining. Chem-Dry Protectants refreshes the performance of stain resistant carpets, creating a barrier around the carpet fibers to resist soiling and staining by allowing spills to be removed before staining can occur.

PowerGuard Protectant- This revolutionary carpet stain protectant not only gives a boost to your carpets stain-resisting powers, but works well with solution-dyed carpets.

Repel Protectant- Repel Protectant works with all kinds of carpets by forming a protective shield around each carpet fiber. This liquid-repelling carpet solution doesnt give stains the chance to set in. It repels most stains, allowing a window of opportunity for you to soak up the spill on your own before it adheres to the carpet fiber.

Wool Protectant- Chem-Drys Wool Protectant is a water-based solution specifically designed to enhance the stain resistant qualities of wool carpets and rugs. It defends against most liquid spills to stop stains in their tracks.

Does someone in your home suffer from allergies or asthma so you are concerned about allergens and air quality? Do you have children who love to roll around and play on the carpet so you are worried about bacteria? Carpets are beneficial acting as giant filters absorbing and collecting common allergens and germs. But, just like an air filter, carpets become full over time and must be properly cleaned to remain most effective at trapping particulates as they settle from the air. Chem-dry has been tested and proven by a leading independent air quality laboratory to effectively remove an average of 98.1% of common household allergens from the carpets and upholstery we clean. And when a sanitizer is added with the healthy home package, 89% of the bacteria in the air and 82.3% of the bacteria from carpets was removed*, leaving your carpets and air quality clean and healthy and your family safer.

Sanitizes home to eliminate unhealthy bacteria that can spread illness

Reduces common allergens from dust mites, pests, pet dander, pollen and more

Special deodorizer reaches odors absorbed in your carpets so they arent just masked theyre eliminate

The Best Carpet Cleaning Services of 2016 | Top Ten Reviews - September 25, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

Carpet Cleaning Services Review Why Use a Professional Carpet Cleaning Service?

The top performers in our review are Coit, the Gold Award winner; Stanley Steemer, the Silver Award winner; and USA Clean Master, the Bronze Award winner. Heres more on choosing a service to meet your needs, along with detail on how we arrived at our ranking of the top 10 carpet cleaning services.

A professional carpet cleaning service is the best resource when you start thinking about all of the unpleasant things in your rugs and carpeting, especially the living things. Mold can live in carpet and so can bacteria. Fleas and dust mites, too. The non-living contents are only slightly less disturbing. Even if you have well-trained animals, Spot's occasional accidents may be hiding in any corner. That's in addition to Spot's shedding. Humans in the home shed, too thousands of skin cells every day. Then there are the crumbs and dust of everyday life that accumulate in your carpeting to create an unsavory mix.

Vacuuming will take care of many everyday messes, but industry experts, including the Carpet And Rug Institute, recommend a professional deep cleaning every 12 to 18 months to ensure a healthy home. Concerns abound when it comes to steam cleaning, including worries about the potential for mold if you introduce moisture into the cleaning process. According to the EPA, as long as carpets are dry within 24-48 hours of being cleaned, mold will not be able to grow. The best professional cleaning services have the equipment to make sure carpets dry at least that fast, and usually much faster.

There are many options when you start to look for a professional carpet cleaning company, but we focused on the ones that are widely available and well regarded. After extensive research, we found Coit, Stanley Steemer and USA Clean Master to be the best carpet cleaning services. These competitors offer a wide range of cleaning services and extras to ensure you get exactly what you want for your home. For more information on this topic, read our articles on carpet cleaning services.

Getting a professional into your home for carpet cleaning is not cheap, and some folks would rather take their chances with a good vacuum and not much else. Others would prefer to buy their own carpet cleaner that they can use as often as they like. A mix of options might be right for your home, especially if you have pets. That way you can use your own machine to steam out occasional messes and freshen things up, but you can still have a professional service every year or so to get a truly deep clean.

One reason for a professional cleaning service is that this is not just about making the carpet more attractive. It is a science more than an art, literally. The carpet cleaning companies we reviewed have incorporated years of research about how hot the water has to be to kill the creepy crawlies in your carpeting. Their equipment has super strong suction to extract as much of the water as possible to prevent mold afterward. The best companies carefully formulate chemicals that will clean without leaving harmful residue.

Some of the available carpet cleaning services are regional, but we looked for companies that are more widely available, likely to work well regardless of where you live. The best carpet cleaning solution is the one that works for you, so we highlighted the ones that offer more than carpet cleaning. Many also can clean blinds, air ducts, hardwood floors, leather furniture and other items. Depending on your lifestyle you may also need stain protectant, pet odor removal or dyeing services, at times, to return carpets to near-original condition. We prefer the services that offer all of those choices and many more.

We looked for companies that offer steam cleaning as opposed to older methods like bonnet cleaning. Our top-ranking services use truck-mounted extraction, which involves injecting carpet with cleaning solution and hot water and then removing it with suction. Bonnet cleaning uses something a lot more like the buffing machines that are commonly used to clean hard floors in industrial settings. A soap is applied to the carpet and then a rotating brush is pushed over the carpet, absorbing soap and dirt on its way. This method is generally well regarded for short loop carpeting common in offices, but it does not clean deep enough for the type of carpeting typically used in residential settings.

There are few places where the service area overlaps for all of the carpet cleaning companies in our review Los Angeles County is one. So while we called the national headquarters multiple times for each company, we based certain information, including estimated cost, cost effectiveness and minimum required order on the answers we got for that area for comparison. Prices and some offerings can vary based on your geographical location, though.

We got an estimate from each service for cleaning three carpeted rooms of average size, approximately 144 square feet each, in Los Angeles County, a geographical area they all cover. We also got estimates for cleaning a 3,000-square-foot commercial space in Los Angeles County. Along the way we noticed things about the quality of customer service we experienced with each company and scored companies based on responsiveness and attentiveness. Since this company's employees are potentially going to be coming into your home, you want to feel comfortable with how they would treat you and your property.

We also calculated cost effectiveness for the same services from each company. We gave higher ratings to the competitors that offer a relatively low cost per square foot. We also looked for those with short estimated drying times and appointment windows so you do not have to take a half-day at work waiting for the technicians to arrive. The best experiences with these services will be fast and allow your household to get back to normal quickly.

Our carpet cleaning service reviews reveal a range of good options in a wide array of geographical locations. A deep steam clean for your carpets can make your whole house feel newer and cleaner. It can make you love your carpets and rugs again and postpone costly replacement projects.

Coit made the very top of our list for its standout customer service, wide range of offerings and satisfaction guarantee. This company is a safe bet for carpet, upholstery, tile, grout, air duct, wood floor, drapery, natural stone and other types of cleaning. Their satisfaction guarantee inspires confidence with its specificity, unlike the vague promises that you get with some competitors.

Stanley Steemer can't clean your soiled curtains or blinds but it can handle just about everything else in your home or your business, and almost anywhere you might live. This company covers 48 states, for the basics and for fire and flood emergencies.

USA Clean Master, our bronze winner, has many fewer years of experience than Coit or Stanley Steemer, and far less impressive customer service, but the value this company offers is undeniable. You get a wide range of services and clean carpets for less than 25 cents a square foot.

All of the cleaning services we reviewed will offer a better level of clean than a typical household vacuum. The very best of them offer an elevated level of customer service and more selection for specific types of cleaning, too. When you are ready to give your carpets a new lease on life, look to professional carpet cleaning companies for help. You can face a house full of relatives at the holidays with complete confidence after a professional cleaning by a reputable company.
