U.K. Treasury Hunts for Broadbent Replacement at BOE - March 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The U.K. Treasury began its search for a new member of the Bank of Englands rate-setting committee to replace Ben Broadbent, who will be promoted to be one of the deputy governors of the institution on July 1.

The government posted an advertisement on the Cabinet Office website for a candidate with strong and proven economics knowledge and skills and undisputed integrity. The appointee will start on July 1, before the July 9 and 10 policy meeting, the ad said.

The search for a new policy maker coincides with the biggest management shakeup since the central bank gained independence in 1997. Last week, Governor Mark Carney unveiled plans to create One Bank as the result of a strategy review by management consultants McKinsey & Co. As well as a swathe of internal promotions, Carney announced two new deputy governors, including Broadbent, who is currently an external member of the Monetary Policy Committee.

The appointment of external members to the MPC is designed to ensure that the committee benefits from thinking and expertise in addition to that gained inside the Bank of England, the ad said. Each member of the MPC has expertise in the field of economics and monetary policy. Members do not represent individual groups or areas. They are independent.

The position, which averages three days a week of work, pays 135,751 pounds ($225,500) a year. The closing date for applications is April 11 and interviews are expected to take place in London on April 29 or May 1, the ad said. The successful candidate is expected to be announced mid-May, it said.

Gono 'lobbied' Mugabe against new RBZ boss, claim - March 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

FORMER Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) governor Gideon Gono has denied claims by a Cabinet minister and Zanu PF politburo member that he tried to block the appointment of John Mangudya as his replacement.

The minister told NewZimbabwe.com that Gono actively lobbied President Robert Mugabe against appointing Mangudya and urged the Zanu PF leader to promote his former deputy, Charity Dhliwayo, instead.

Gono and Mangudya bitterly fell-out over the accounts of the First Family's dairy business at CBZ bank, the minister added.

Gono however dismissed the allegations as lies.

Mangudya, currently chief executive of CBZ Holdings, was confirmed as the new central bank head by Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa at the weekend, replacing Gono who retired last November after ten years at the helm of the apex bank.

Gono, who worked with Mangudya at CBZ before moving to the central bank in 2003, congratulated his former protg saying: He (Mangudya) is one man I know will be equal to the task and challenges ahead.

He obviously will find both deputy governors Dr Charity Dhliwayo and Dr Kupukile Mlambo incredible pillars of support technically and experience wise, together with the dedicated team of professionals I left behind.

I join all my predecessors in welcoming Dr Mangudya aboard the community of governors.

However, the Cabinet minister, who asked not to be named, said Gonos apparent delight for Mangudya was just smoke and mirrors and an attempt to cover his deep disappointment with the development.

Gono, who has been nominated for the Senate by Zanu PFs Manicaland province, is said to be eyeing the Finance Ministry, supposedly banking on his reputed close ties to Mugabe as a former banker and financial advisor to the First Family.

Knights and dames: Tony Abbott says he did not ask his Cabinet or party room before reinstating honours - March 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Prime Minister Tony Abbott says he did not seek the approval of his Cabinet or his party room before announcing his surprise decision to reinstate knights and dames honours in Australia.

Outgoing Governor-General Quentin Bryce is the first dame to be announced and her replacement Peter Cosgrove will be the first knight under the revived system.

Labor MPs are ridiculing the Prime Minister's decision as a "back to the future" step and the Prime Minister's own parliamentary secretary agrees it is not a "hot button issue" with voters.

Mr Abbott says he consulted some "senior colleagues" but not his backbench before making the announcement.

"I consulted with a number of senior colleagues.I took some soundings in the community but in the end it was my recommendation to the Queen which she graciously accepted," Mr Abbott told Fairfax Radio.

"I've had some amusing texts from a particular Cabinet minister."

In a blog post, the Liberals' most prominent republican in Cabinet, Malcolm Turnbull, says supporters of a republic should not lose too much sleep because of the announcement because many countries which have knighthoods are not constitutional monarchies.

Liberal MP Russell Broadbent says Mr Abbott did not take the idea to his colleagues despite the Government party room meeting yesterday morning.

"It's most interesting, it's quite a surprise... an interesting surprise," Mr Broadbent said on his way into Parliament.

The Prime Minister's parliamentary secretary Josh Frydenberg said Mr Abbott was not obliged to tell his colleagues first.

Kerala: Cabinet reshuffle post-polls on the cards? - March 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Trivandrum, March 21: A cabinet reshuffle is likely after the Lok Sabha polls scheduled on April 10 in Kerala, announced chief minister Oommen Chandy.

Chandy, on Thurday, said that a cabinet reshuffle would take place post-polls after getting the approval of the party high command.

The recent entrant to United Democratic Front, Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP, might demand seats, which may create new trouble for the Congress-led Front. The RSP has two MLAs in state assembly.

It is speculated that the Kerala Congress (B) chairman R. Balakrishna Pillai might demand a cabinet berth for his son and former minister for sports and film KB Ganesh Kumar.

"Chandy said that he would consider our demand for cabinet berth after the polls. We are waiting," said Pillai.

Ganesh Kumar had to step down from cabinet after his wife Yamini Thankachy complained to Oommen Chandy that she was physically tortured by the minister. Ganesh was also alleged to be having an illicit relationship with solar scam accused Saritha S Nair.

The reshuffle might have repercussions within the Front as inducting new ministers into the cabinet will require the removal of a few ministers.

India Today learnt that the portfolios of some allegedly "incompetent" ministers of Muslim League, an ally of the ruling front, would also be changed after the polls.

There is a growing demand within the Muslim League that minister for education P.K. Abdu Rabb should be replaced by M.P. Abdussamad Samadani, Kottakkal MLA. But the League leadership may not accept that proposal as they prefer N. Shamsudheen, MLA from Mannarkad, to Samadani if they go for a replacement.

Rifi calls on Cabinet to fill vacant commission posts - March 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

BEIRUT: Justice Minister Ashraf Rifi urged the Cabinet Friday to fill vacant posts in a 2005 commission tasked with following up on the case of hundreds of Lebanese believed detained in Syrian jails, the state-run National News Agency reported.

In a letter sent to the prime ministers office, Rifi demanded the appointment of a new head of the commission replacing Judge Joseph Maamari, who retired.

He also asked the Interior Ministry to appoint a replacement for commission member Sami Nabhan, who also retired.

Rifi also referred documents published by Lebanese and Arab newspapers on the issue of Lebanese detainees in Syria to the commission to investigate them further, the NNA said.

Around 600 Lebanese are being held in Syrian prisons and eyewitness accounts and documents have indicated that many are still alive and in Syria, say the families of the detained Lebanese.

Redford's replacement Dave Hancock promises 'government Albertans want' - March 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Andrea Janus, CTVNews.ca Published Thursday, March 20, 2014 6:31AM EDT Last Updated Thursday, March 20, 2014 5:21PM EDT

Saying its been a strange day or two, Dave Hancock reassured Albertans Thursday that their Progressive Conservative government was moving forward, after his caucus selected him to be their interim leader and the provinces premier.

The five-term MLA was handed the post less than 24 hours after Alison Redford announced that she will step down effective Sunday. Redford had struggled to contain a caucus revolt and plummeting poll numbers.

Hancock gives a government in turmoil a steady, experienced hand. He is a five-term MLA who has served in cabinet posts such as health and education. Redford named him deputy premier during her most recent cabinet shuffle a few months ago.

Its been a strange day or two, but Im humbled and privileged to have the confidence of caucus to provide leadership for the government as we go forward, Hancock told reporters Thursday.

We will be providing the government that Albertans want and expect, (that) they elected us to do.

The government will get to work passing the recently tabled provincial budget and will move forward with other items on the spring legislative agenda, Hancock said. It will also not abandon the Building Alberta fund, a massive infrastructure project that includes hospitals, schools and roads, Hancock vowed.

Redford stepped down during a brief but emotional press conference at the Alberta legislature Wednesday night following months of growing voter outrage over what they perceived to be lavish travel spending, including a $45,000 trip to Nelson Mandelas funeral.

In recent days, two PC MLAs stepped down from caucus over leadership and other concerns.

Quite simply, I am not prepared to allow party and caucus infighting to get in the way of building a better future for our province and for all Albertans, Redford said Wednesday night. And that is why I am announcing today that with a profound optimism for Albertas future, I am resigning as premier of Alberta, effective this Sunday.

Deficit Jim Flaherty, credited as steady finance minister, resigns - March 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

OTTAWA Jim Flahertys resignation from cabinet Tuesday marks the end of a tumultuous eight years as finance minister and leaves Prime Minister Stephen Harper scrambling to find a replacement in the governments most important portfolio. Harper was expected to name a new finance minister on Wednesday.

The 64-year-old Flaherty made the bombshell announcement Tuesday barely a month after tabling his latest federal budget, which projected the federal government would balance the books in 2015-16.

The resignation comes shortly after Flaherty openly questioned the wisdom of the governments plan to introduce income-splitting for families, a position that placed him at odds with other cabinet ministers and even Harper.

But the man sometimes tagged with the unflattering nickname Deficit Jim wont even be in government to watch the Conservatives get back into black ink. Nor will he be in cabinet to push through legislation enacting his own most recent budget.

His resignation from cabinet is effective immediately, but his office said he will stay on as MP for Whitby-Oshawa for the time being.

Flaherty is the only finance minister the Harper government has ever known; he was appointed to the post when the Conservatives won power in 2006.

He is widely credited by political observers and many economists as the steady economic hand who helped the government fight its way back from the depths of the recession to the verge of a balanced budget.

Yet by the end of the 2014-15 fiscal year, under Flahertys watch, the government will have added $150 billion more to the federal debt than was there at the beginning of the economic downturn in 2008.

Opposition parties have highlighted the mounting deficits and federal debt as examples of how Flahertys economic record isnt nearly as strong as the government trumpets.
