WASHINGTON - The sure-to-be politically fraught nomination process for Eric Holder's replacement as attorney general will come after next month's midterm elections, the White House said on Tuesday.
An official, speaking anonymously about the nomination process, said Senate Democrats urged the White House to wait until after November's contests to put a nominee forward to head the Justice Department. Democrats are urgently working to maintain control of the Senate, and are expected to lose seats in the Republican-controlled House.
RELATED: Eric Holder resigning as attorney general
Holder, the last of President Barack Obama's original cabinet members, was a politically divisive attorney general, and the fight to replace him is expected to be rancorous on Capitol Hill.
A nominee could be pushed through a lame duck session after the midterm elections, though other issues on the congressional docket -- like authorizing Obama's use of force in against ISIS -- are expected to dominate proceedings in November and December.
"I do anticipate that Democrats will hold the Senate," White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters after Holder resigned. "That said, I also anticipate that whoever the nominee is will earn and ultimately receive bipartisan support."
Democrats close to the nominating process have floated several names as potential Holder replacements: the current Labor Secretary Tom Perez, the former Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, and former White House Counsel Kathryn Ruemmler are all considered in the mix.
Others include U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara and former Justice Department official Tony West.

KUCHING: The state cabinet will discuss the type of aid and contributions to be given to the family of the late body-building great Bujang Taha.
Assistant Youth Development Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the state will not forget the contribution of state athletes such as Bujang who had put Sarawak and Malaysia on the global sporting map.
Personally, it is difficult to find an individual like the late Bujang who had excelled tremendously in the bodybuilding arena to the extent that he had done the state and country proud. His success in his field, its difficult to find a replacement.
On behalf of myself and the state government, we extend our condolences to his family. The state cabinet will discuss on the types of aid to be given to the family, Karim who is also Assistant Housing Minister told reporters when met at the late bodybuilders residence at Kampung Tanjong, Petra Jaya near here yesterday.
Those who paid their last respects included Assistant Minister in the Chief Ministers Department (Islamic Affairs) Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman, Assistant Tourism Minister Datuk Talib Zulpilip, Sarawak Bodybuilding Association president Dato Wee Hong Seng and national bodybuilder George Awi William.
Meanwhile, Daud mentioned that Bujang was the type of individual who would not ask for anything.
It saddened me because he never asked for anything from the state government including allowance. I was thinking of requesting from the chief minister for Bujang to be given a monthly allowance and I hope that the state government could consider this, he continued.
Both Karim and Daud described Bujangs demise as a great loss to sports, the state and country as whole.

Bulgarian former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, who won Oct. 5 elections, said he wasnt optimistic about forming a lasting coalition government and said a new vote may be possible.
The Gerb party, which Borissov said will open talks on Oct. 13, fell short of winning an outright majority, securing 84 seats in the 240-member assembly, followed by the Socialists with 39. Turnout for the snap vote was the lowest in two decades, helping a record eight parties enter parliament.
Im not an optimist, Borissov told reporters. Well make a strong effort to make a government happen, though two or three parties will be needed for that. The only thing worse than a new round of elections is an unstable cabinet formed at any cost that will fall apart in a month.
The European Unions poorest country by per-capita output faces its fifth cabinet in two years amid political turmoil over a widening budget gap, a stagnant economy, institutional corruption and European Commission pressure to push ahead with reforms. The vote was called after the Socialists lost power following the seizure of Corporate Commercial Bank AD, the countrys fourth-largest lender, in June.
The yield on sovereign euro-denominated bonds maturing in September 2024 fell 3 basis points, or 0.03 percentage point, to 2.87 percent at 12:55 p.m. in Sofia today. The cost of insuring the countrys debt against non-payment for five years using credit-default swaps fell 6 percentage points to 136, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
The composition of the new parliament generates instability, Borissov said. We have eight parties, half of which dont talk to each other.
The second-place Socialists want higher spending on social benefits and subsidized power prices for Europes lowest paid population, while Gerb, which was ousted from power by anti-austerity protests in 2013, is seeking to cut spending.
The Socialists will decide whether theyll support a coalition with Gerb today. The coalition cabinet led by the Socialists resigned in July after a year in power over the loss of parliamentary support and a run on Corporate Commercial. The central bank placed the lender under supervision, freezing its assets and making funds unavailable to depositors.
Borissov accused central bank Governor Ivan Iskrov of doing nothing to rescue the bank, saying its the central banks job to deal with insolvent lenders under Bulgarias bank laws. He reiterated his intention to seek a replacement for Iskrov, whose term ends in October 2016. He can be replaced only if he resigns, according to the central bank law.
Borissov ruled out a coalition with the Movement with Rights and Freedoms, which represents the ethnic Turks in Bulgaria, the third-biggest party in parliament. A coalition with the Reformers Bloc, which has 23 seats, may be possible if it doesnt oppose Borissov becoming prime minister, he said.

CITY council cabinet members have signed off on proposals to close a specialist youth advice centre in York, but offered some hope of another future for the service.
The cabinet met last night to discuss changes in childrens services including the Castlegate centre as well as the recommendations of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents on river safety and the plan to extend Fulford School.
Fifteen members of the public spoke at the beginning of the meeting, many objecting to the plans to close the Castlegate centre, and to urge councillors to postpone the plans until Castlegate staff had had more time to come up with alternative proposals.
Carol Pugh warned the cabinet that closing the Castlegate centre would affect not just those young people who use the service now, but those who might need its help in five years or more.
She added: There are many good services out there, but the services offered at Castlegate are not offered anywhere else. When services are offered holistically, they just work better.
Cllr Janet Looker, the cabinet member for childrens services, said the proposals were being considered with a heavy heart.
She said the services as Castlegate had been successful because of the people and the staff providing them.
Cllr Looker also addressed concerns that a move to West Offices for the youth services Castlegate provides would put young people off.
She said if the offices were uncomfortable for vulnerable young people, they would be uncomfortable for vulnerable families and adults as well, and the council should improve that for the sake of everyone in the city.
Speakers also told the cabinet members that staff wanted to talk to them about alternative ways of delivering the service like staff co-operatives, or social enterprises and there was some hope offered when cabinet agreed to add a caveat to their decision, saying that must take place.

Dilma Rousseffs chief of staff is temporarily leaving office to help the president spread her message on Brazils economy ahead of the runoff vote on Oct. 26.
Aloizio Mercadante, who has a doctorate in economics from the State University of Campinas in Brazil, will start focusing full time on the campaign today, Rousseff told reporters in Brasilia. Rui Falcao, president of the Workers Party and the presidents campaign chief, told reporters at a separate event that Mercadante would take part in the economic debate in the run-up to second-round voting.
Brazils economy has become the central theme in this years national election, as Rousseffs opponent, Aecio Neves, says government policies have helped fuel surging consumer prices and erode business and consumer confidence. A trained economist, Rousseff says Nevess proposals to slow inflation and reduce the size of the state would put at risk jobs and social welfare programs.
Were witnessing opposition between the rich and the poor in the campaign, Rousseff said today. We would do policies for the poor and they would do policies for the rich. This dichotomy is partially true.
Brazils economy slipped into recession in the second quarter as inflation that twice this year breached the ceiling of the target range reduces purchasing power. Rousseff says her policies have pushed unemployment to record lows and that her party in 12 years has lifted about 35 million out of poverty.
Finance Minister Guido Mantega, who today told reporters that economic growth is picking up in the second half of the year, says he wouldnt stay on for a second term if Rousseff wins. The incumbent hasnt identified a possible replacement.
