Whether youre embarking on a full bathroom renovation or just looking for ways to keep your space fresh for the year ahead, stay on-trend with the latest bathroom design styles for 2024. Expect to see a combination of functionality and design, with natural elements, earth tones, and a focus on accessibility in the coming year.
Bathrooms feature a greater attention to detail and focus on sustainability than ever before. Nature-inspired elements will continue to reign, but with a more saturated take in 2024 than they have in previous years. A lot of the bathrooms we have designed for completion in 2024 are full of deep earth tones and colors, says Katie Labourdette-Martinez of Hearth Homes Interiors. We are loving the juxtaposition of off-white tiles and stone paired with deep earthy plaster and dark marble.

As far as what exactly homeowners will be keeping in mind when embarking on bathroom renovations in 2024, Mitchell Parker, Houzz senior editor says addressing unique familial needs, particularly that of aging family members, will be another primary focus.
From sustainable elements to handmade faucets and fixtures, these are the most popular bathroom trends the experts predict for 2024.

Consumers can expect to see an increased popularity in spaces that feel truly timeless. Parker credits this trend to homeowners aiming to stay in their homes for a longer duration of timeperhaps well into retirement. Designers on Houzz are hearing that homeowners want to achieve a timeless style with materials and features they wont grow tired of, he explains. Even modern homes are incorporating elements such as brick, handmade clay tiles, rustic wood elements and arches that create a feeling of quiet luxury.
According to Parker, focusing on a more timeless aesthetic also furthers the popularity of sustainable design where features like water- and energy-efficient fixtures, LED lightbulbs, and dimmers are all continuing to gain prominence.

According to Parker, the trend toward personalized elements and custom, handmade features initially gained traction in European design shows but has made much headway for U.S. consumers. This trend toward handmade details and features is also closely linked to the growing popularity of timeless style. Pros on Houzz say this includes handmade tiles, custom bathroom vanities and other bespoke elements, which create a feeling that the homeowner has something truly unique and special, Parker says.

The 2023 Houzz U.S. Bathroom Trends Report found that wood is the most desired choice when upgrading a bathroom vanity. While white continues to dominate as the most popular color for countertops and walls, this attraction to wood vanities connects to a larger move throughout the home away from cool grays and stark whites to warmer neutrals like beiges, creamy off-whites and rich browns, Parker says. With the broad range of wood tones on the market, it can work for nearly any aesthetic ranging from coastal to traditional.

Labourdette-Martinez says she is seeing scallops pop up just about everywhere. From vanity chairs to cabinetry details, its coming in hot and we think its here to stay through 2024, she says. Another detail thats making its way to the bath after playing a prominent role in living space design is fluted cabinetry. The aesthetic creates a thick, often rough statement-making detail beneath island countertops, bathroom vanities and dining room tables, adding visual texture and interest, Parker says.

While natural materials are continuing their unprecedented rise in popularity, so too are nature-inspired colors and wall treatments that can further the soothing, indoor-outdoor appeal of the aesthetic. Earth-toned paint colors, plaster, and accent colors are recent favorites for us and weve been weaving them into our designs in 2023, and expect to be doing even more of that through 2024, Labourdette-Martinez says. When it comes to selecting earth-toned paint colors, undertones are more important than ever. To keep it interesting, look for shades that bring an unlikely element to the table (like an off-white with a subtle apricot nod) for a fresh take on the earth-tone trend.
Courtesy of Hearth Home Interiors / Public 311 Design
Bold marble and natural stones have been a big bathroom trend through 2023, and we expect 2024 to be no different, Labourdette-Martinez says. Were loving the deep reds and browns, bold veining, and black stones for bathrooms lately. For those who are looking to keep their budgets in check, consider tiles that can lend a similar effect, or even smaller elements like a rattan stool, natural rug, or wood bench to deliver a grounding, natural feel.
Because more homeowners are planning to stay in their homes for longer, they're implementing features that they'll need down the road. Half of homeowners who are addressing these needs are planning ahead for the future and theres growing interest in universal design that prioritizes beauty, in addition to function, Parker says. Manufacturers are supporting this trend by creating stylish, aging-in-place features. For this reason, nonslip flooring, curbless showers, wider doorways, lower vanity heights, and grab bars are a few design elements youll see more of in 2024.

7 Bathroom Trends That Will Make a Splash in 2024 - Better Homes & Gardens

Bathrooms, a bit like kitchens, take a lot of consideration especially when you are starting from scratch and designing a totally new space. Unlike living rooms and bedrooms where you can quite easily switch things around as your tastes and trends change, bathrooms need to be considered from the start - they need to last through ever-changing trends and get that balance between being both current and classic.
Essentially you want to be creating a bathroom that never dates, a timeless space that always looks on trend. Easier said than done we know, which is why we asked top interior designers for what they think makes for a timeless bathroom.
The key to a timeless bathroom is really about creating a space you love and not being too swayed by interior design trends. If you reflect your own personal style that's what's going to give a space longevity, plus choosing colors and finishes that aren't going to date too soon (although if you love it, what does 'dated' even really matter?).

'Begin by layering your bathroom with timeless natural materials, in both the bathroom flooring and countertop selections. I love a classic marble paired with wood flooring or a beautiful tile. These elements create a canvas that fosters a sense of enduring elegance.' suggests Marie Flanigan.
'Plumbing fixtures with clean and subtle silhouettes help strike a balance between contemporary touches and timeless design. Create a balanced and inviting atmosphere with strategically placed fixtures that not only enhance functionality but also offer a new finish to the space. Hardware selections serve as jewelry for your bathroom. Choose timeless finishes like unlacquered brass or polished nickel and pay attention to intricate details that add a touch of sophistication to the overall design.'
'Im a big believer in choosing timeless materials for things that are not easily changed like tile and plumbing fixtures in a bathroom,' agrees Emily Henderson. 'Think of a pretty subway tile for instance. Then after those foundational elements are in place you can either continue with traditional light fixtures, bathroom paint colors, decoror you can decide to play with different styles to make it feel more eclectic.'
Marie Flanigan
Marie Flanigan is an award-winning interior designer whose passion and achievements in design have positioned her as one of the nations best. She is classically trained and practiced architect, and her trademark style is evident through the sophisticated use of color, texture, and light. Every home she designs receives her personal signature of timeless elegance and innovative simplicity.

'A timeless bathroom is all about the fusion between form and function. Everything in your bathroom should serve a purpose, especiallyif the space is on the smaller side,' explains Kathy Kuo.
'I would advisefirst making a list of the bathroom essentials you know you'll need -shower curtain, bath mat, towels, soap dishes, a toilet paper holder - and then make design-centric choices to check those pieces off your list. Finally, finish the space off with an artful wall mirror, some fun wall art, and a chic waste bin - these are items that you can moreeasilyswap if you decide you want a slight refresh down the line. If you let practical needs lead the design, you can't go wrong!'

'Bathrooms have come a long way in the last few years. The use of unusual and impactful materials has really been on the rise. One thing we keep in mind for someone looking for a showstopping bathroom is whether it will work in five years!' recommends Jennifer Walters, founder of Folding Chair Design.
'Some of this boils down to materials. The use of a powerful marble is always a good idea in my book. Marbles have been used in bathrooms for hundreds of years and will continue to be used in different ways, so the timeless quality of this material always holds up.Geometric porcelains and cement bathroom tiles are already seeing their way to the door, so we like to use more trendy looks in spaces like bathroom backsplashes where they can easily be changed out in a few years if necessary without redesigning a whole room.'
(Image credit: Julie Soefer/Marie Flanigan Interiors)
'Creating a timeless bathroom is all about blending enduring aesthetics with functionality. We begin by selecting materials that have stood the test of time. Marble bathrooms immediately come to mind, with their innate elegance and timeless beauty, or subway tiles which are known for their versatility and clean lines.' explains Jennifer Davis.
'We keep the bathroom color schemeto neutrals, like pristine whites, warm beiges, or soft, inviting grays. To complement these foundational elements, opt for fixtures and plumbing fittings characterized by classic lines, nothing to ornate or too modern. We tend to stick with timeless metals such as polished chrome or brushed nickel. The marriage of classic materials, neutral tones, and timeless design elements creates a space that surpasses the fleeting bathroom trends.'

Jennifer fell in love with design at a young age and has been working in the industry for over 25 years. She has developed an eye for detail and a talent for creating timeless designs. Jennifer offers a balance of creativity and forward-thinking with a structured, organized, and detailed mentality.Jennifer is driven by her deep passion for design while curating an exceptional client journey, ensuring pure delight from the very beginning to the end.

'Aesthetically, try for clean, beautiful finishes. But a bathroom does not have to be all white or neutral to be timeless,' says Mindy O'Connor Principal Architect and Founder of Melinda Kelson O'Connor Architecture & Interiors. 'Bold tile, wall, or vanity colors and deep saturated or colorful hues can be timeless as well. The way you apply those colors though is critical for longevity. Think in large areas, and avoid overly complicated or intricate patterns, especially ones that might be disturbed if a plumbing fixture, mirror, or vanity needs to be updated.'
'Be conscious of scale looking for proportional places to use small or mosaic shapes versus larger format tiles and think of continuous surfaces and how they intersect or meet the curb, windows, or walls in the room. Stick with more neutral (and easily cleanable) metal finishes that can work with changing tastes as well.'
'In order to design a timeless bathroom, focus on a proper bathroom layout with distinct areas wherever possible. Even in a small space creating breathing room around each function will make the room feel more open and lasting. Include bathroom storage in your vanity (or medicine cabinets), and a separate tiled shower where possible. Having spaces to put things away makes for a more usable bathroom and allows for lasting finishes.' adds Mindy.
So it seems that if you want to design a timeless bathroom, it's all about the marble, clearly designers believe this is the most classic of materials. You want to create a setup that is malleable, by that we mean it's a neutral (or neutralish) backdrop for you to bring in smaller decor and fixtures that bring the bathroom up to date and change the look as trends change.

Want to use eco-friendly building materials in your home? There are plenty of products out there that are genuinely greener options perhaps because theyre made using renewable resources, are created with recycled materials, or they result in better indoor air quality for your home.
But there are also options that make claims to being green while offering very little in the way of environmental benefits and this can make choosing a genuinely eco-friendly item hard.
To help, weve put together a guide to the eco-friendly building materials that are available for your eco home improvements, outlining why theyre a greener choice.
Some options are better for our wellbeing and that of the planet. On the whole, healthy building materials contain less embodied carbon and are less likely to emit toxic VOCs (volatile organic compounds), ensuring better air quality inside our homes. They are also likely to be recyclable or reusable.
Our guide lists the eco-friendly building materials to look out for when youre shopping for wood, insulation, flooring, roofing and more.
When it comes to building a house or an addition, look for sustainably sourced timber whether it forms part of the internal structure or plays a more obvious role, for example in wood-framed buildings, or for wood siding.
Look for Forest Stewardship Program (opens in new tab) (FSP) accreditation when buying wood. The non-profit FSC sets standards for forest management around the world with the aim of meeting current needs for forest products without compromising the health of the worlds forests.
Another option for wood trim and millwork is to reuse, visiting salvage yards or architectural antique stores. This is a great way to add character, too. And consider the reuse option for siding as well: you may be able to source reclaimed wood siding materials from building supply stores and salvage yards.
Some architects and housebuilders are specifying buildings made of cob, which is a subsoil containing clay and straw. While its labour intensive, its virtually zero carbon and the walls are very thick, meaning the thermal efficiency inside is sound.
Similarly, straw bales can be used not only alongside timber but as a load-bearing material that can support a roof structure. These are generally finished with lime render (see below) to create a breathable fabric.
Be sure to check with the local building department to ascertain if you need a permit if youre planning to use either of these eco-friendly building materials.
Versatile and natural, lime was used in the construction of nearly all surviving old buildings in Britain to form the binder for mortars, plasters, render and washes. Now lime-based materials are becoming mainstream with low-carbon construction systems.
Lime-based materials let structures breathe and move gently, which is essential for old buildings, says Douglas Kent of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (opens in new tab). It helps them keep their natural equilibrium, controlling moisture and dampness, thereby offering health benefits and internal comfort.
Cork is another renewable natural material and one thats recyclable and biodegradable. Whats used is the bark from cork oak trees, which is carefully harvested from the trees; the long-lived trees themselves are not cut down, and the trunks are not damaged. The bark is renewed and it wont be harvested from an individual tree again for another nine years.
Think cork for flooring but also as a thermal and acoustic insulator. UK-based specialist builder Moulding (opens in new tab) has recently used a cork-based lime plaster on the inside face of all external walls of a large historic house as a sort of eco-friendly form of cladding.
The cork additive provides an extra layer of thermal performance and raises the U-value [the level of thermal transmittance] of the wall, says director Tim Moulding.
As weve seen above, cork is one of the eco-friendly building materials that can be used as insulation, but there are a plethora of other options. Products derived from materials including wood, wool and hemp, as well as cork, can be used in lieu of conventional insulation. Do bear in mind with all eco-friendly insulation options that they may be more expensive than their non-natural cousins.
Wool
Wool is one of the most popular: the benefit is that its 100 per cent recyclable, whereas most plastic insulation ends up in landfill. Wool also outperforms plastic when it comes to acoustics, thanks to its high density and soft fibrous quality, and can also retain heat better than plastic and mineral wool. This means it can absorb heat, which addresses a concern that as the planet heats up, houses that arent designed to withstand rising temperatures are going to overheat.
Soy-based
Insulation made partly with soybeans is another greener option for insulating a home. Soybeans are a renewable resource and the insulation has a high R-value, or thermal resistance.
Cellulose
Cellulose insulation is manufactured using shredded newspapers so makes use of recycled materials. It is treated to make it fire retardant. It can be used for attics as well as walls.
Denim
Insulation made using a high percentage of denim and cotton recycles these materials, keeping them out of landfill. Its a good acoustic as well as thermal insulator and easy to handle.
Plastic
Plastic bottles can also be recycled to help create insulation for a home, helping to keep them out of landfill and the oceans.
If you want to make a lower environmental impact with roofing, there are a few different options to consider.
Green roofs
Planted with dense vegetation green roofs have many eco benefits including insulation, rainwater harvesting and stormwater retention. It can also mean a longer lifespan for the roof.
Wood shakes
As with other wood, think FSC certification if youve decided on wood shakes for the roof to ensure the timber comes from sustainably managed forests.
Shingle
Look for shingles made from recycled materials such as plastic, which keeps these materials out of landfill and reduces the use of new materials. A long lifespan also makes this a greener option.
Metal
A metal roof can be manufactured from recycled materials, and can be recycled at the end of its life, which is a long one.
Reclaimed slate or clay
Use reclaimed slate or clay tile to complement a homes architecture and reuse what might otherwise become waste.
Rubber
Shingles made from recycled materials including rubber from old tires make use of waste and are a durable roofing material.
Cork (see above) might already be on your list as renewable natural material for flooring. So, too, might wood and, here again, think FSC-certified products from well-managed forests, or opt for salvaged wood flooring to add character.
And there are other eco-friendly possibilities for flooring when youre remodeling:
Linoleum
You might be surprised to discover that, unlike vinyl, linoleum is made from natural materials, including linseed oil, pine resin, and wood flour. Its one of the greenest flooring options available.
Bamboo
Bamboo flooring might have the look of wood but its actually a fast-growing grass and sustainable.
Metal
Metals can be recycled to create floor tiles, so investing in this as flooring helps keep the materials out of landfill.
Choosing eco-friendly paints made with water rather than solvents means a lower level of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can have detrimental effects on health and lower levels of chemicals that harm the environment.
Since not all paints labelled as eco are equal, it pays to check out what theyre made from. The most eco-friendly options are made only from natural ingredients, and have low levels of VOCs.
If youre in need of caulks, adhesives and sealants, just as with paints, be aware of VOC levels, and opt for zero or low levels to avoid pollution.
Which other eco-friendly building materials should you look out for when youre remodeling? Recycled glass can be used for tile and countertops; if youre choosing wallpaper, you can select those made from paper originating from sustainable forests plus solvent-free paste; and you can opt for drywall thats made from agricultural waste.
The answer to what is the most eco-friendly building material depends on the definition you use, but bamboo is the number one for many experts. Thats because it grows fast; it has high strength and is very durable; and it is light to transport.
Think about using bamboo in flooring and countertops, and as lumber and veneer, suggests Lucy Searle, global editor in chief of Homes & Gardens. Bear in mind, though, that using bamboo flooring in a bathroom isnt generally recommended nor should you use it in other areas that are subject to excess moisture as it can become damaged.
Other top choices if you want to be as eco-friendly as possible include cork, and sheeps wool for various elements of your home.
Wood is an eco-friendly material, providing it comes from well managed forests. Its a renewable resource and it can also be recycled at the end of its life. Manufacturing of wood products can also be achieved with very little waste.
All goods are manufactured with raw materials obtained from the Earth. By far, wood use has the least number of negative aspects and, in fact, actually has a range of positive impacts, says Bill Cook,Michigan State University Extension (opens in new tab).

Wondering where to spend and where to save in a small bathroom? Many new homeowners start out a small bathroom project assuming that it will be cheap because of the small size of the room. But because bathroom remodels can quickly become more complex than anticipated, the costs can quickly add up. Proper advance planning is the only way to ensure you stay within budget while achieving the bathroom look you wanted.
So, to convert you small bathroom ideas to reality you need a good understanding of where to spend and where to save.
So, where should you spend the big bucks in a small bathroom? Scrimp in the wrong place you'll create more problems for yourself further down the line; splash on everything, and you'll run out of money. Here's how to get the balance just right, according to interior design experts.
If there's only one thing you can spend your money on, our interior designers recommend investing in the structural elements of your bathroom above anything else. Interior designer Karen B Wolf told us she had to admit that 'you do have to spend on the bones of the bathroom. That means the plumbing fixtures do need to be from accredited, well-reviewed brands.'
Bathroom plumbing may not be the most exciting thing to spend money on, but, as Wolf points out, 'If you have plumbing issues down the line, it can be an expensive proposition to replace diverters in walls. (Tile has to be removed and it can become a messy job). This does not mean buy the BMW, a Subaru of plumbing is just fine, steady and secure.'
Once you've invested into high-quality plumbing, consider investing in frameless shower doors. Wolf explains that these give an 'immediate indication of high-end vs lower-end bathroom'. Andra DelMonico, the Lead Interior Designer for Trendey, agrees, telling us that 'the right shower door can mean the difference between a small bathroom feeling bigger or more closed in.' Shower doors should be the priority when calculating your shower remodel costs.

You may be wondering if you should spend good money on bathroom tile, and here our designers have slight differences of opinion. Bathroom tile ideas are probably the most noticeable element of your bathroom design, and our experts agree that it makes sense to invest in tile. However, as principal designer and co-founder of Twelve Chairs Interiors Roisin Giese told us: 'We typically spend on the finishes where things like tile and wallpaper have a big impact without requiring too much material.'
So, if you'll only be tiling a small section of your bathroom, or doing half-tile, half-paint, it may make sense to splurge on marble or another natural material. Wolf highly recommends spending extra on your tile 'you can use marble in a small space for quality and longevity (natural materials typically do not go out of style as fast as synthetic product)'.
However, interior designer at Kern & Co Chloe Spath thinks that it's more important to spend on bathroom cabinetry 'after all, it is the foundation of a bathroom.' Bathroom cabinet ideas are worth prioritizing when looked at in this way. If you fancy marble, she recommends finishing your vanity 'with a Carrara marble slab to make your small bathroom impressive.' This will cost a lot less than all-over marble, but will still give your small bathroom oomph.

Interior designers agree: where it comes to small bathrooms, you can save a lot by. going for cheaper bathroom fixtures likes toilets and sinks. The toilet, especially, doesn't need to be fancy it just needs to do the job.
DelMonico is emphatic about this: 'You dont need to spend a fortune on a new toilet for your bathroom. American Standard makes a quality toilet that can look modern and lovely, right out of the box.'
Wolf agrees, pointing out that it's worth looking for a toile 'from a reliable brand, but you do not need fancy bells and whistles or specialty finishes.' Chloe adds that 'when you are working with a budget dont splurge on the most expensive plumbing fixtures.' So, if you're wondering how to choose a bathroom sink, going for the respectable mid-range should always be your guiding principle.

The other area where it's worth saving rather than spending is bathroom accessories. According to DelMonico, 'you can find great deals on towel bars, cabinet hardware, and toilet roll holders. These small touches are nice, but you dont need to spend a fortune to get the look you want.'
And as for that controversial question of marble, if you are on a tight budget, it's best to go for porcelain tile instead of natural stone. Chloe believes that 'marble floors and walls look incredible in a bathroom but can really drive up the price. You can achieve a similar look by using porcelain tile. The porcelain gives the same clean look that marble has but for a fraction of the price.'
If you're just getting into bathroom remodel ideas, and your bathroom is on the smaller side, David Mason, an interior designer and owner of The Knobs Company, recommends spending money the floor and the tile: this will give you a sense of luxury. And don't scrimp on the tile; get good quality.' If you have a mid-range budget, 'spend money on the vanity and the cabinet. It will give you so much bang for your buck.'
For truly budget renovations, Mason recommends on bathroom paint ideas and accessories: 'You can even change the feel of a bathroom by simply changing the paint color and adding some new accessories.'
If you're starting a small bathroom from scratch, Mason advises that 'you can easily save a lot of your funds by doing some or all of the work yourself.' With new bathrooms, costs can add up, so 'save on tile by using paintable tiles of a high quality.' Fixtures can also be bought at a lower price, but Mason does recommend making sure you go 'for streamlined, simple fixtures that will last a long time.' There is a line between saving and a false economy.
Overall, the advice from Mason (and other experts) is clear: 'focus on the big-ticket items like the floor and the tile; those will surely give the biggest impact to the overall texture and look of your washroom.' Whether you're subtly remodeling or building a brand-new bathroom, the floor and the walls really matter, as does quality plumbing. Everything else can be got for cheaper without affecting the style or quality of your bathroom.
