How much does a bathroom remodel cost? See 2019 Avg Prices - September 24, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

The national average cost to remodel a bathroom ranges from $12,500 to $15,000depending on the size and extent of the project.

The cost to remodel a bathroom varies greatly. Factors like the current state of the space, the specific bathroom remodel design plans and material costs can all impact the overall price. Some bathroom remodel projects involve simple repairs and replacements in a small bathroom, whereas others require major replacements and upgrades, renovation of an entire bathroom or the addition of a whole new bathroom. So what will a bathroom remodeling contractor charge you? Let's look at the numbers.

Like a home renovation, the unique requirements, materials, and scope of project mean the average cost of a bathroom remodel ranges widely. Contractors or plumbers will probably have to take a look in person before they can provide a free estimate for the renovation.

To give you more of an idea of what you'll pay before a contractor gives you an estimate, here are several cost examples for remodels of different size bathrooms, provided by Thumbtack ProViewpoint NW, a bathroom remodeler in Vancouver, Washington. Keep in mind each job was specific to that house. The total cost of each project includes all material and labor costs:

To remodel a small bathroom, the national average cost is between $1,250 and $3,500. Smaller spaces mean less material, labor or installation costs. Simple projects like tile replacement, sink replacement, and updating light fixtures can improve the look and feel of your bathroom at a lower cost and time commitment.

However, if you plan to add more square footage to your bathroom, that's where the expenses can really add up. Expanding the size of an existing small bathroom increases the total cost of a bathroom renovation project and lengthens the job's timeline. Some expansions may require permits, too, which may cost an additional fee and take time to secure.

Example of a small bathroom remodel project

Adding a bathroom to an existing space costs upwards of $8,000 on average nationally, depending on size of the new bathroom. Material and appliance costs can easily add up when building a new bathroom, so be sure to estimate the cost of every appliance you plan to include in the space.

The more luxurious the materials for a bathroom remodeling project, the higher your budget will be. Using marble for your counters, custom cabinetry or handpainted ceramic tiles for your new shower walls in the master bathroom will look terrific. But it will also raise your material costs considerably more than installing a laminate countertop and low-end or mid-range tiles.

Another major expense for new bathroom renovations is plumbing. Installing a new toilet, sink, bathtub or walk-in shower will incur plumbing costs on top of your material and labor costs. Plumbers with the necessary know-how or trained general contractors must install new pipes, valves and the appropriate drainage systems.

It's possible to get a high-end look for less than $10,000, says James Tapia ofGlobal Housing Contractors. According to him, here are a few ways to save money on your bathroom remodel:

You don't need to buy a fancy toilet to have a nice bathroom. Tapia recommends American Standard. They make a very good toilet, out of the box." Also consider a low-flow toilet, which can save you additional money over time.

Floor tiles have a big impact on the bathroom, so they're often a place pros recommend spending a bit more. But you can save money by doing your homework.

Competition between tile distributors has increased, and there are a lot of players in the market," says Michael Big of Big Brothers Development. This means with a bit of shopping, you can find gorgeous tiles at competitive pricing."

Another pro tip: Look for ceramic tiles that mimic granite. Subway tiles and other more affordable options will also make a huge difference. Learn more about tile installation costs

Big box stores and online retailers have surprisingly good deals on towel bars and storage. Don't spend extra money on this stuff at high-end stores and instead buy your faucet, hardware and other common items from cheaper retailers.

Whether you're re-doing a large bathroom or a small one; tackling it on the cheap or have more budget to spare, finding ideas for your new bathroom is a necessary (and fun) part of the process. We asked Thumbtack Bathroom Remodeler pros about the biggest interior design trends they've seen in recent remodel projects. Here are their ideas:

    Small changes, big impact

How to make a small bathroom feel big

    Popular design trends

Read your contractor's reviews. Comb for details on their punctuality, communication skills, work environment cleanliness and work quality. But if you see negative reviews, don't dismiss the pro right away. Look at how they respond: if they show strong communication and conflict-resolution skills, they may still be a good fit.

Make sure you also ask for a portfolio of their past work, especially if you have a specialty project in mind. On Thumbtack, you can look at photos of previous work for bathroom remodeling contractors before you hire them.

Some contractors specialize in certain kinds of projects. For example, one contractor may do bathroom additions and master bath renovations, while another focuses specifically on small bathroom remodels. Ask this question upfront to save everyone the time and effort of a site visit.

Also, if you need bathroom design services, make sure to ask if your contractor has design training. If not, consider hiring an architect or designer in addition to your bathroom remodeler.

You want a company that has time for you and has long-term relationships with its subcontractors. Make sure you and your contractor have the same expectations about how often they will be onsite once the remodel or renovation kicks off. The contractor should be open with you about how long each stage of the project will take, and they should show a good understanding of what factors could potentially push that timeline out.

Many general contractors serve as the business head and hire foremen to run projects. Ask to meet the project manager and make sure it's someone you want at your house every day. Depending on the elements of your bathroom remodeling project, your contractor will probably bring in more specialists.

This is a good thing in most cases you want a specialist for things like drywall, painting, and retiling. But make sure you ask exactly what will be subcontracted out and get background information on those subcontractors.

Any contractor or subcontractor who works on your house should be bonded, licensed, and insured properly according to state and local standards. Insurance can help protect you if your home gets damaged during construction or workers are hurt on site, while hiring a bonded contractor can help protect you if the contractor fails to pay workers, doesn't pay for permits, or doesn't finish the work. Here's more on how to do your research.

If a contractor isn't willing to get the permits, it may be a sign they're not licensed. You may need permits to make sure the work is up to code and that your homeowners insurance will cover it once it's done. Make sure to ask whether permits are required and, if yes, ask to see the permits before the project starts.

What time does the work day start and end? Do workers clean up at the end of every day? Will they haul off garbage and debris? If pros are working inside, ask how they'll protect your hardwood floors from damage. It's best to talk about all of this upfront and get it in writing. And don't just take their word for it make sure to read their previous reviews carefully to see what other homeowners have said about their working style.

DIY Bathroom Remodel: A Step-By-Step Guide | Budget Dumpster - September 24, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

A bathroom makeover is an easy way to spruce up your home. But before you start taking measurements for an open shower, you should take the time to plan out your bathroom renovation step-by-step so you know exactly what youre getting into.

According to Angies List, the average total cost of a bathroom remodel is between $10,000 $15,000, with labor costs taking up at least 20% of the budget. By going the do-it-yourself remodeling route, you can expect to save as much as a few thousand dollars.

Curious about how to remodel a bathroom yourself? Take a look at our step-by-step guide to figure out the best way to tackle your bathroom remodel.

Before you do any bathroom remodeling yourself, you should settle on a new design that fits your vision, as well as your skill set. There are so many different ways to approach a bathroom makeover, ranging from swapping out the vanity to gutting the space and starting over from scratch.

Here are a few design elements you absolutely need to nail down before you start your bathroom renovation:

Of course, you may need a few things outside of your essential homeowner tool collection, but the exact tools required will vary based on your renovation plans. But these are a few essential tools to have on hand for any bathroom renovation.

If you dont have either of these tools, they are available to rent at most home improvement stores for a minimal cost.

Assuming youre partially or totally renovating your bathroom, this is where youll start removing drywall and any fixtures youre replacing. Remodeling a bathroom yourself isnt all that hard, but there are a few steps you should follow to avoid any costly mistakes during the demolition phase.

Bathroom Remodeling Tip: Renting a dumpster for your demolition debris will allow you to dispose of everything at once without having to drive to the local dump, cutting hours off your project time.

After youve gutted your bathroom, its time install your new fixtures. For a shower or tub replacement, youll want to pick a pan or basin that fits your new decor, as well as the space where your current tub sits.

In terms of shapes, you generally have three choices:

The base shape you choose will determine your layout, so make sure you take into account the other features of your bathroom beforehand, including the location of the door. You could also consider installing a combination shower and bath tub if you have the space.

If there are any signs of rotting wood or water damage to your subfloor, you should replace it before installing your new shower to prevent further damage.

Bathroom Remodeling Tip: A walk-in shower conversion is a stylish, space-saving update to make in any home. If youre converting your bathtub to a shower during your bathroom makeover, check out this guide to a DIY walk-in shower conversion.

With the shower out of the way, you can now install your new vanity and cabinets. If their dimensions are bigger or smaller than your current ones, youll need to renovate your bathroom a little further by adjusting the wiring.

For the most part, that means moving the GFCIs (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters) and other power outlets so that they line up with your new vanity and cabinets. After all, you dont want to have to reach down next to the toilet in order to plug in your hair dryer. You should call in an electrician for this step, especially if you have never worked with home wiring before.

A DIY bathroom makeover is not complete without new floor tiles. But before you start grinding away with the grouting, use a masons chalk line to mark reference lines perpendicular (at a 90-degree angle) to the wall with the longest continuous line. This will allow you to keep your tiles in a straight line, avoiding the dreaded crooked tiling job.

Now your bathroom makeover is starting to take shape. The next step is to hang your new drywall. This can be a long process as you have to cut new drywall to fit around your vanity and any other features. But once you start nailing up the boards you should be able to move briskly.

After youve put your walls back together, you can start adding some color to your bathroom. Painting is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to freshen things up and give the bathroom a whole new look. Its best to use paint with a semi-gloss finish that is resistant to mold and mildew.

Bathroom Remodeling Tip: While youre working on your walls, its the perfect time to start re-tiling your shower and tub area if you plan to do so. Here are a few handy tips to follow when tiling your bathroom shower.

After youve taken care of the walls and finished installing any new lights, its time to install the vanity, cabinets and anything else thats on your bathroom remodel punch list.

The first thing you want to install is the vanity, including the sink and faucet. Once you have the drain hooked up to the faucet, you can move on to the other essentials such as the mirror, cabinets and the trim around the shower or tub.

At this point in the process, your bathroom actually resembles a bathroom, except for one thing: the toilet. You could install or re-install your toilet earlier in the process but leaving it for last helps avoid chipping it while working on other areas of the bathroom.

If you arent quite sure how to install a toilet, Lowes has a great guide you can follow.

The last finishing touch is to install the trim around the room and mirrors. The trim is the capstone for every bathroom remodel as it provides the last bit of detail your bathroom needs to feel complete. But of course, the real last step in any bathroom makeover is to draw a nice hot bath for yourself after all your hard work. You deserve it.

    Published: March 2012

An expertly remodeled master bathroom will provide years of pleasure and comfort. But do an amateur job and youll be reminded of the fact every day. Its a tricky space, unfortunately, with lots of moving parts crammed into a tight footprint, not to mention the volumes of water ready to exploit any and all leaks. Setting a budget and planning ahead are two ways to keep your project on track. (See Bathroom remodeling trends and costs.) And also take care to choose the best sink, countertop and toilet for your space. The following list of dos and donts will help you master the remodel, whether you do the work yourself or a hire it out.

When youre investing in a home remodeling project, you want to make sure that the results not only please you but add value to your home and save you money on energy and water as well. These seven steps will help you take advantage of the latest design trends, technologies and products.

Budget for the unexpectedHidden water damage is a common problem in bathrooms, whether from a leaky shower pan or running toilet. If the floor feels spongy, thats a sign of serious water damage, says John Petrie, owner of Mother Hubbard's Custom Cabinetry in Mechanicsburg, Pa. Other issues are truly hidden, for example a vent stack inside a wall that you thought you were going to knock down.

An experienced contractor will do exploratory work early in the project to sniff out as many issues as possible. In the case of the vent stack, well investigate above the bathroom to see the pipe coming up through the house, says Petrie. But contractors cant see through walls, so dont expect them to catch every possible pitfall. Thats why its important to build a 10 to 15 percent cushion into your budget. If nothing goes wrong, youll have a nice little windfall.

Hide the toiletA master bath thats stylish and functional can also be discreet. Thats why its nice to hide this fixture away, either in its own room-within-the-room or behind a half wall. A piece of furniturean armoire or dresser, saycan create the necessary barrier without the expense of a framed wall.

Do choose appropriate surfacesYour master bathrooms surfaces do more than just contribute to the overall aesthetic. They also take lots of abuse. Porcelain tile is a favorite among designers, for use on the floors and walls alike. You can find some versions in the $5 per square foot range that look like natural stone, says Petrie. He recommends larger tile sizes to minimize grout lines, easing the upkeep. That might mean 18-by-18-inch tile on the floors and 12-by-12-inch on some or all of the walls, perhaps transitioning to 6-by-6 tiles on the diagonal with a glass mosaic transition strip.

Porcelain is also a popular option for bathroom sinks, though it proved prone to chipping in our tests. Enamel-on-steel sinks were especially durable and stain-resistant, as were stainless steel sinks, which are becoming more popular for use in bathrooms. Solid-surface sinks are another durable option that allows the sink to be integrated with the vanity countertop and, if you like, the adjoining cove or backsplash.

When it comes to the countertop, granite and quartz have migrated from the kitchen into the bathroom, where they deliver the same durability and visual interest. Laminate and solid surface are still popular as well, and can be cost-effective options, though both scratch easily. See our countertop Ratings for full details.

Splurge on the showerThe empire of the Roman tub is officially over. People started to realize that they could count on one hand how many times they actually used the tub, says Petrie. Were now using that space to create larger showers, often with his and her showerheads, body sprays, and even steam generators.

To create this sensual experience, youll need a shower stall that measures at least 4-by-6-feet, larger than the 3-by-3-feet box that used to be standard. If you can take the stall up to 5-by-7-feet, you may also be able to do away with the door, since the showerhead(s) can be directed in a way that the spray doesnt reach beyond the shower area (an L-shaped design is helpful). This will eliminate a sizable expense, especially if you were planning on a frameless door, which can be pricey. One caveat: Dont eliminate the bathtub if there arent any other bathrooms in the house with a tub.

Consider water efficiencyShowerheads, toilets, and faucets have all become more water-efficient in recent years, thanks to the Environmental Protection Agencys voluntary WaterSense program, which labels products that are 20 percent more efficient than federal standards. Our tests have found many WaterSense winners, including low-flow showerheads that deliver a satisfying pulse while meeting the flow rate of 2.5 gallons per minute. You can even have a rain showerhead these days thats low-flow, says Petrie.

As for toilets, several WaterSense-qualified models that use just 1.28 gallons per flush make the recommended list of our latest toilet Ratings. That could save the average family of four 16,000 gallons of water and more than $100 per year if theyre replacing older, inefficient toilets, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Choosing a faucet with an aerator can reduce the water flow in your bathroom sink by 30 percent or more.

Make room on the vanitySince grooming is the main task at the vanity, its important to have plenty of surface area to put things down. While the his-and-her double sink configuration has been popular in the past, it often makes sense to have a single sink and more counter space. Couples I work with usually realize that the second source of water is less important than the additional countertop, says Carolyn Cheetham, president of Design Works by Cheetham in Alberta, Canada. Besides maximizing the counter space, opting for a single sink vanity saves you the expense of the second sink and faucet. And eliminating a set of plumbing expands the available storage space inside the vanity.

Provide adequate ventilation and lightMoisture not only breeds mold and mildew, it can take a toll on finishes and painted surfaces. A bathroom fan is the best defense. Guidelines from the National Kitchen and Bath Association call for a ducted system thats at least 50 cubic feet per minute, though you may need twice as much ventilation if the space is larger than 100 square feet or if you plan to install a steam shower. Consider a humidity-sensing unit that will automatically turn on and off depending on the amount of moisture in the air.

As for lighting, the goal is to bring different layers of illumination into the room. A ceiling fixture is suitable for general lighting, but it will cast shadows on your face when youre seated at the vanity. Thats why youll also want sconces or other vertical fixtures mounted on either side of the vanity. Some medicine cabinets are available with vertical lighting strips.

The shower and toilet should also have a dedicated task light, such as a recessed canister light. Consider fixtures that use LED bulbs. Many provided bright, even illumination in our lightbulb tests with the promise of 50,000 hours, though they do cost more. Remember to put the fixtures on dimmer switches so that light levels can be adjusted depending on the mood and task at hand.

Avoiding these seven common goofs could save you thousands of dollars on the project, especially if youre planning an upscale remodel. Youre also likely to enhance the comfort, style, and efficiency of the finished project.

Dont rush the processNow that youre committed to the idea of a new bathroom, you probably want it done tomorrow. But poor planning is the leading cause of cost overruns on these projects. Nothing is more expensive than doing things twice, says Elizabeth Goltz, owner of Design by Orion in Kansas City. Depending on the size and scope of your bath project, you should spend several weeks to a few months on the planning process. If you dont have a Pinterest account yet, consider one. This website lets you keep a digital ideas file of inspiring images you find on the Internet, say for tile styles, favorite fixtures, and clever designs.

As you plan the space, try to come up with a design that keeps the major plumbing lines in place. Moving the toilet from one wall to another will mean relocating a 3-inch drain line in a home, which can cost thousands. If you can keep the toilet, shower, and sink where they are, youll save significantly on the project, says Petrie.

Dont skimp on skilled laborThe do-it-yourself approach can be an effective way to trim costs, but its best to focus on the front and back ends of the project, say, ripping out the old tub during demolition and handling the finish painting. Leave the more complicated installations to professionals, ensuring theyre highly skilled. A good tile setter can make a low-cost tile look expensive, says Goltz. On the flipside, you could spend a fortune on tile, and a bad tile layer will make it look cheap.

Given how many trades are required for a typical bathroom remodelplumbers, electricians, tile setters, cabinet installers, and moreit pays to find a top-notch general contractor to manage operations. Meet with at least three contractors, preferably those you find through word of mouth. Make sure the person you settle on has an up-to-date license and insurance, including workers compensation. And scrutinize the contract; it should list every product down to the model number and finish. And dont automatically go with the lowest bid.

Dont cut corners on key materialsAnother common mistake is cheaping out on those items that get the most use. Lifetime warranties that cover leaks and stains have become more common on all but the cheapest faucets. PVD (physical vapor deposition) finishes resisted our best attempts at scratching them, but drain cleaners can stain them slightly. Chrome was also pretty durable in our tests, but can be scratched if you rub it with a heavy-duty scouring pad.

Tile is another material that you touch and feel each day. While you can find quality options for $5 per square foot, super cut-rate tiles may have slight size inconsistencies. The results will be crooked lines that make a bathroom look shoddy.

So where can you save? Light fixtures tend to perform the same across most price pointsits the high design that costs more. You might also find that opting for a basic finish on faucets and fixtures saves you hundreds of dollars without compromising quality. And you definitely dont need to blow your budget on a luxury toilet, like Kohler's $6,390 Numi, with its motion-activated lid and built-in bidet. Those are cool features, but toilets costing as little as $300 delivered the best flush in our tests.

Dont stop thinking about tomorrowYou may be the picture of good health today, but you cant predict the future. What you can do, however, is ensure that your bathroom will serve you and your loved ones regardless of your abilities by following the basics of Universal Design (i.e. aging in place). It is absolutely coming onto peoples radar, even younger clients, says Alan Zielinksi, president of the NKBA.

And you dont have to worry about ending up with an institutional look. Many universal design features are now part of mainstream bathroom design. For example, the larger shower stall thats in favor today offers easy access and universal use, provided it has a zero-threshold and a built-in seating platform. The bench is also a nice place for an able-bodied women to sit and shave her legs, says Cheetham. Regarding toilets, so-called comfort-height models that are easier to get on and off of are now just as common as standard-height models. Even grab bars have enjoyed a design upgrade; many now match towel bars and other accessories. And theyre not just for the elderly. Grab bars make it easier for pregnant women or young children to get in and out of the bathtub.

Even if you dont incorporate every element of universal degisn into the bathroom now, its worth putting in the structural framework, such as blocking in the walls for future support bars. Make sure your contractor makes a drawing of the wall so that you can find the blocking if, and when, the time comes.

Dont forget to factor in water useBathroom fixtures have become more water-efficient, especially if you choose WaterSense-qualified models. But the trend toward tricked-out showers, often with his-and-her shower towers that might include multiple showerheads and body sprays, will likely result in your water and energy use going up. It also means your bathrooms existing drain and plumbing lines might require an upgrade. You may need to resize your water lines from half-inch to three-quarters, says Petrie, an upgrade that can add hundreds, if not thousands, to your project.

Thirsty fixtures may require you to upgrade your water heater as well, say, from a unit that holds 50 gallons a day to one that holds 80 gallons. That could cost you another $1,000 or sofigure on roughly $2,000 if you choose one of the energy-efficient hybrid water heaters that Consumer Reports' test have found to be good long-term investments.

Dont buy products online without seeing them in personGoing online is great for researching products and design ideas. But materials and finishes arent always as they appear on your computer screen. That blue-gray quartz vanity top might be more blue than gray in real life, or the light fixtures that look understated online could overwhelm your actual space. Thats why we always recommend visiting a showroom or design center before you buy. While youre there, you may even get the showroom to meet or even beat the online price.

Dont forget about storageRunning from the shower to grab a towel from the hallway linen closet gets oldand coldfast. A closet inside the bathroom is ideal, though an armoire or even just a simple chest can handle the essentials. And a medicine cabinet is still the best place for your various health-care and first-aid essentials.

    Remodeling A Bathroom – Quisse - September 15, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

While many bathrooms have laminate or solid surface countertops, tiles of all shapes and styles are the pick of the day. For any variety of looks and durability, choose glass, ceramic, stone or metal tiles. You can also scatter hand painted or embossed tiles at intervals on a wall to create texture and color. At present, bathroom taps for sinks and showers come in a variety of shapes, materials and designs to choose from. Although they look expensive, they fit most bathroom budgets. The popular bathroom budget taps are made of steel while some look elegant with ceramic knobs. If your bathroom is small and you want to save on space and money opt for a bathtub fitted with shower instead of separate shower cubicle.

Ceramic and stone tiles have become popular for bathroom flooring. This is low maintenance material and is perfect for bathrooms. They are available in a variety range of colors. The monotony can be broke by using contrast borders. Go in for a throw rug instead of thick carpet to add color and warmth to the bathroom interiors.Anti skid cotton bath rugs are also a good option. When you are executing your bathroom ideas, you need to use the space wisely and keep the fixtures and fittings in proportion to the size of the room. If you are fitting a small bathroom, there are sinks designed specifically to suit the purpose. Ceramic is by far the most sought after and affordable material used in the manufacture of sinks, and it is the most hygienic and durable. Provided you take good care of it, it will still look as good as new even after a decade. Stylish alternatives such as glass or steel will need more work to keep them looking good. 5 Ways to Freshen up a Bathroom | Today’s Homeowner - September 15, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

You dont have to break the bank to give your bathroom a new look. Here are five inexpensive ways to freshen up your bathroom.

Start with a deep clean. Use a mixture of white vinegar and grease-fighting dish detergent to clean shower walls, porcelain, and ceramic tiles. Click here to watch this formula in action.

For an all-purpose and non-toxic surface cleaner, mix one cup of rubbing alcohol with 2/3 cup of white vinegar in a 32-ounce spray bottle. Top the rest of the bottle up with water. This eco-friendly cleaner dries fast and wont leave streaks.

Check your bathrooms vent fan, which is often overlooked. If the grill is covered in dust, turn off the fan, remove the grill and use the hose on your vacuum cleaner to remove the dust. Then, vacuum any dust or debris on the fan and motor. If the grille is really grungy, buy an inexpensive replacement grille.

Eliminate odor-causing bacteria by pouring baking soda and white vinegar down your drains. Rinse away the resulting fizz with water.

A coat of fresh paint is the easiest way to upgrade your dated bathroom. And, since most bathrooms are small spaces, its not a huge chore. When painting in the bath, choose either eggshell or semi-gloss paint finish to help repel moisture.

Before painting, prime the area with a moisture-resistant primer. Some paints now come with primer mixed into the paint.

To ensure a waterproof seal, caulk the joints between the wall and the counter or shower surround. Be sure the caulk is dry before painting
