Several new homeowners paced the floors of the Broward County Convention Center Friday checking out hot tubs, solar panels, paintings and other home features during the kickoff day of the Fort Lauderdale Home Design and Remodeling Show.

"I'm looking to add new things and I'm making changes and upgrades," said Carol Bell, 58, who bought a new townhouse in Plantation eight months ago.

Bell's must-see list included laminate flooring and home security system exhibits.

She had plenty of choices.

The home and remodeling show features 750 booths offering a wide range of home products and services, including sliding doors, hurricane windows and interior design consults.

This year's lineup includes Hollywood-based Solar Quest USA, offering energy efficient products, Boca Bath & Kitchens Inc., showcasing faucets and cabinets, and Fantastic Windows, displaying different types of drapes and blinds.

Joanne Cutrofello, owner and president of Parkland-based Fantastic Windows, said new construction in Broward and in Palm Beach counties has brought "a lot of opportunities" for companies like hers in the home remodeling industry.

"A lot of people are buying new homes with nothing in it," Cutrofello said. "And others are ready to redecorate. They aren't afraid to spend. They're ready to spend."

Marina Amis, 50, stopped by the convention center Friday to check out patio furniture and landscaping for her new home in Hollywood.

"This gives you great new ideas and you get to see a lot of new products that are now in the market," Amis said.

SPRING, TX (KTRK) --

On this Memorial Day, Frank Haynie offers a pretty honest assessment of his health.

"I, like everyone else, am dying. Some of us just get there quicker," he said.

Haynie fought in Vietnam but came home poisoned and disabled by Agent Orange. As Vietnam gets further away, the Agent Orange effects have gotten worse.

"I'm getting around less well and I need this thing finished," Haynie said.

This thing is his bathroom. And when we first met him, he couldn't use it.

The shower was too small, too close to the toilet that was also tough to use and the tub. It's not that big a deal until you realize it was three years after the VA spent $60,000 of your dollars to rehab Haynie's home to make it handicap accessible.

This is what progress looks like: A remodel re-do for a disabled veteran that didn't get approved until we started demanding answers from the VA. He shouldn't have needed us. The first plans weren't followed, flaws in the first job were glaring. But all approved by VA inspectors.

"We found the mold, we found misconstruction. When we broke into the bench, there was 4 inches of water," Jim Darst said.

Darst is the new contractor fixing the work with a new check from the VA. He jumped at the chance to do it after hearing what Haynie was going through.

When it comes to Corridor bathrooms, these days it seems bigger isnt always better.

We are seeing a trend of bathrooms downsizing to accommodate ease of use and care, said Mary Jo Kloft, showroom manager at Master Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning in Cedar Rapids. The 28-year-old company handles service and installation of new products related to plumbing, heating and air conditioning, including bathroom remodeling projects.

Kloft said many homeowners these days are undertaking bathroom remodeling projects that involve removing an existing tub-shower combination and simply installing a shower in its place.

Another trend, Kloft said, is replacing standard height toilets 14 to 16 inches high with comfort-height stools 17 to 19 inches high.

Rob Hajek, president of building and remodeling for Home Repair Team in Cedar Rapids, agreed that clients planning to stay in their homes longer are undertaking remodeling projects to make their home more ideal for their wishes.

The aging in place population wants showers only, he said of the remodeling projects Home Repair Team, a repair company in business since 1998, has worked on.

Walk-in showers, he noted, are very popular as well.

People want a large open shower with glass and either natural lighting or can lights inside the shower area, he said.

Other popular materials and enhancements range from Vikrell a hard, fiberglass material used in pre-made shower modules to custom tile work, cut stone floors and decorative glass incorporated on walls.
