Angies List: Bathroom Remodel Tips - September 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) If your bathroom could use a little love, its a smart place to spend money.

Behind kitchens, bathrooms provide the second best return on investment when remodeling.

In todays Angies List report, we take a closer look at a growing trend in bathroom design. Should you swap your tub for a shower?

Bathroom remodeling contractor, Dan Updike, says many of his customers are choosing to ditch bulky tubs in favor of more luxurious showers.

The bathing generation is kind of gone by the wayside. We are a pretty much shower generation anymore. So, rather than have the bathtub that you lift your leg over thats a confined space if you put in a large shower its more of the spa-type shower, Updike said.

The trend these days is to convert bathtubs into showers. There are so many choices when it comes to showers and they potentially take up less space than the large garden tubs that have been historically in homes. If you are a homeowner that wants to age in place, grow old in your home, a shower can be a safer alternative for you, Angie Hicks with Angies List said.

When it comes to walk-in showers, the design options are nearly endless. They can be customized to fit just about any size, shape or lifestyle.

As far as options for the shower with the older generation the grab bars, maybe some corner seats, some hand held showers, things like that. Inside shampoo holders or corner shelves, we always have some type of shelving go into the unit. Frame-less shower doors so its more glass, less metal. And then its a matter of what to put on the shower walls whether its tile with accent trim tile or go to the solid surface wall system, Updike said.

VERMICOMPOSTING CLASS: You've heard of composting, but what's vermicomposting? It's the practice of composting with worms to reduce kitchen garbage and create a mineral-rich amendment for your garden.

Learn to build a vermicomposting binand care for worms at a vermicomposting class sponsored by the Cuyahoga County OSU Extension service. The class will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the Ka-La Healing Garden Center, 2251 E. 73rd St., Cleveland. Free and no registration is required.

SMART BATHROOM REMODELING: When it's time to remodel a bathroom, start by reading this list of essentials found on the Country Living magazine website. Following these simple tips will save you time, money and aggravation.

Plumbing is expensive to move. Sometimes changing a bathroom's layout is a good thing. However, don't do it if you don't have to. Doing so can add to both the duration and cost of your project.

The supplier is in charge. When ordering custom items such as tiles, vanities, light fixtures and bathtubs, select these items at the very start of the project and do not start the demo process until the arrival date.

Add natural light. Now is the time to add a sun tunnel or skylights to your bathroom. You can buy battery-powered skylights with rain sensors that automatically close the unit when a storm comes along.

Consider a walk-in shower. It will make the room seem larger and help if you plan to stay in your home as you age.

Angie's List: Converting A Tub To Shower - September 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - If your bathroom could use a little love, it is a smart place to spend money.

Behind kitchens, bathrooms provide the second best return on investment when remodeling.

Updike said converting a standard five-foot tub into a shower typically starts around $4,500. But prices can quickly increase depending on the materials and options you choose.

"If you want to go tub to a shower it's very simple to do, you just need to move plumbing a little bit for the new setup. Other than that they make shower bases the same size as bathtubs. We normally use solid surface bases instead of plastic or fiberglass. They are very heavy duty and come in a variety of colors to coordinate whether it's tile on the walls or solid surface wall panels," Updike said.

Angie's List: Replacing Your Tub with a Shower - September 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

If your bathroom could use a little love -- it's a smart place to spend money. Behind kitchens -- bathrooms provide the second best return on investment when remodeling. When it comes to walk-in showers, the design options are nearly endless. They can be customized to fit just about any size, shape or lifestyle.

They are very heavy duty and come in a variety of colors to coordinate whether it's tile on the walls or solid surface wall panels."

While nearly every bathtub can be converted into a shower, it's not always the best idea.

"Replacing a tub for a shower is not for everyone. If you only have one bathroom in your house you want to be sure you keep a tub because what will end up happening is you'll hurt your resale value. Families with kids, they like tubs and without one it can hurt you," says Hicks.

Angie's List says this is a job best left for the professionals -- so make sure you hire a reputable contractor. If the company has a showroom -- go check it out. Being able to visualize your project before it gets underway can help define your expectations...and illustrate how design and layout choices will work.
